Listen to Billy Joel: billyjoel.lnk.to/playlist
Shortly after Billy Joel earned his first U.K. Top 40 hit with “Just The Way You Are,” he and his band travelled to England for an electrifying performance recorded for the hit BBC series The Old Grey Whistle Test. Ahead of his first headlining show in the country, Billy performed all the hits from The Stranger plus additional classics from his repertoire.

Lyrics:
Anthony works in the grocery store
Savin' his pennies for someday
Mama Leone left a note on the door
She said, Sonny, move out to the country
Workin' too hard can give you
A heart attack (ack)
You oughta know by now (oughta know)
Who needs a house out in Hackensack
Is that what you get with your money
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out
I'm movin' out
Sergeant O'Leary is walkin' the beat
At night he becomes a bartender
He works at Mister Cacciatore's down
On Sullivan Street
Across from the medical center
He's tradin' in his Chevy for a Cadillac
You oughta know by now
And if he can't drive
With a broken back
At least he can polish the fenders
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out
I'm movin' out
You should never argue with a crazy mind (mmm)
You oughta know by now
You can pay Uncle Sam with the overtime
Is that all you get for your money
If that's what you have in mind
If that's what you're all about
Good luck movin' up
'Cause I'm moving out
I'm moving out
I'm moving out

He loves those lyrics, at 2:08, he lights up...

Sorry can you explain the meaning of this sentence? English is not my main language so I’m a bit confused
The lyrics man. As a blue collar guy, they hit so hard.
That's what I love about music from the 70's. Grown up songs about real life
his vocals are just top notch
It's funny because billy never thought he was that great a singer
@@connorcrabb2811 he is a great singer and the sax guy is amazing also.
Superior lyrics are amplified by his being himself.
Also , his piano skills
dude his only competition imo is paul mccartney because they have like almost the same voice haha
My fav version of Movin' Out. Just listen to the intro. He played the piano and also synth. And the sound effect from synth is really cool and perfect
You, Sir are a music nerd...I am too!!!
I've grown up with Billy through the years and always love his music. It was an honor to be at his n Elton John face to face tour in Cincinnati Ohio years ago n the man keeps on rocking n sounds great.
Agree...Joel's the best!
Alan Smithee I know exactly what you mean! I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who heard that in the studio version
Does anyone know the chords for the synth? 🥺
My last name is O'Leary and my Mother lived in Hackensack. She moved in that house in about 1974 after My Dad and her split up and lived there until she moved to Heaven in 2008. Today is her birthday. I love Billy Joel but never watch him on youtube.. funny thing I wound up on this today.
That saxophone chorus... what a legend
This is my favorite song by mr. joel

martywhitevan yeah, I really like Piano Man but something about this song speaks to me. So I think it’s my favorite too.

Let’s see if you can compare
I bet he had to professionally work on his enunciation. I'm just guessing that his accent would naturally make him mumble if that makes sense.
i'm ridiculously attracted to young billy joel... he seems so confident and cool. and, of course, he's a musical and lyrical king.
Same and I'm a straight guy 😳
He aged well as well though, like on his bridge to Russia tour he looked pretty cool as well but who am I kidding, he always looks cool in all his different looks
@@connorcrabb2811 Haha, very true. I saw him play Madison Square Garden this time last year and he looked&sounded terrific.
@@eddies8856 high five sis we got taste
If he didn’t get fat im sure he would still look quite good
Absolutely perfect live performance.
Hello there,how are you doing?
old grey whistle test had some seriously historical performances on there. I like the way they seemed to really care for the bands and make them sound their best
I got all the issued CD/DVDs ... still there’s loads of performances that haven’t been released, nor a book with definitive playlist,
strange.
Yeah, it was my fave late night show (well, late night in those days!). King Crimson's performance was one that changed everything for me. A band that I got into in my high school days but never saw live because they broke up in 1974/5. Then all of a sudden they appear again, doing/playing like nothing I'd heard before.Thankfully you can find a lot of OGWT clips on here. The box set dvd's are a great reminder, of naked live performance and creativity on show (no fancy lighting and effects, just stripped down to performance.
BTW, love Billy Joel.
It was put together by proper music fans, and it showed.
@@theworldaccordingto4555 hell yeah King Crimson is amazing, just hard to find any videos from the 70's and 80's even though they honestly sound the best
A long time ago I saw Billy and Elton together. What a freaking show!
Wow. Two musical geniuses on the one stage 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
We saw the two of them together in Houston several years ago. It was a fantastic concert!! We loved it!! ;)
I saw them in Pittsburgh in 93. So great and so long ago...
I saw Elton last April and I'm going to see Billy this upcoming August!
sounds insane. wish i could see that one
I watched this about 50 times in the past week
I want a time machine so I can be there to witness this masterpiece live.
You still can
Nothing like Billy in the late 70s early 80s! Love you Billy 💖
The ties that he wore in that era are trademark to me. When ever I see him tieless, I say " That's not the real Billy Joel!" If I see him in person without a tie, I'm gonna say it.... That's if I don't fucking pass out first.
I'd say his prime was early 70's - late 70's
He became a little too poppy in the 80's for my taste
@@lethayle3388 I love Pop-Joel. Glass Houses shows that he is pure genius. He would excell making music in any form or genre. Look how much has been used in rap. 👑
Without context someone would think he is 80

Every time I fuck up in life....the words "is that all you get for your money" come blasting in my brain. There are greats and then there are the greatest. This and scenes from an Italian restaurant, are Joel's best. You can always tell a great musician by the way they sound live.
I forgot how much of a fan I was of him.
me too.
Monstrous levels of talent on display.
Omg! I just never tire of listening to this song.
His voice soo clear & diction too.
Hello there,how are you doing?
When i was a kid my dad used to play the hell outta this song since he was in a band. He died bout 5yrs from now and this popped up my recommendations. I crying here like a bitch, ahh the memories just flodded and im so happy to have him as a Dad. He really loved music all types of genre and played drums.
Saw him play at Wagner College in Staten Island in a crowded basketball gym in 1974. I am old!!
😅😅
Billy Joel is definitely one of the greatest artists of all time!
Thanks for your love and support all through this times, it’s been a wonderful feeling praying for my fans around the world. Though I rarely comment here on my CZcams pages, I was attracted by the emotions in your comment. I’ll like we get along and stay in touch. Where are you streaming from.🎶🌹
Billy Joel is a world treasure. So sad we don't see his kind anymore. A combination of musician and a guy who knows life and its problems.
The Old Grey Whistle Test was essential viewing for UK music fans back in the 70s. So many classic artists had performances archived by that show to be enjoyed by future generations.
And we still get to watch and enjoy. So appreciative we can x
He’s an absolute top notch musician. One of the greatest and this performance is perfect. Love you Billy 😊.
Absolute gem.
It was the 70's on Long Island in Nassau County.....Hicksville, Levittown, Bethpage.....Billy Joel was one of us.....he was all of us.....We looked up to his music.....and he knew who we were.....his concerts were uplifting and gave us something to smile about.....thinking about those days makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.....electric.....
Those first twenty-seven seconds or so, with that bit of piano business before he introduces the song and then when he finally starts...
Awesome stuff. Imagine being there for this.
This is such a quintessential 70s pop, jazz, New York and American classic. It voices and captures the frustration of late 20th century middle class ambitions so clearly. Joel's character knows about the sacrifices his parents, family and community made for his comfortable life and appreciates them but is impatient to make his own mark on the world. By painting such a specific and personal picture of a time and place he conversely universalizes his story, as he does in so much of his music. His stories are of weary, wary but still optimistic characters finding their way in the world and the portraits are tender but unsparing. He loves his home but he's outgrown it, and is now MOVIN' OUT, as so many young adults do. It's that ambition that moves life forward.
From Cuba 🇨🇺 with love .Billy do you remember March 4, 1979 , was a Sunday. The concert was held in Havana , 🇨🇺 Cuba.... I was there. God bless yourself and the USA
🇨🇺💘
Oh Havana, I've been searching for you everywhere...
Dios bendiga a todos los Cubanos. Saludos de Mexico-Americano desde Los Angeles.
It's like he's got so much damn funk in him you can see it trying to escape his body when he plays and sings
This song is dedicated to my brother who has not moved out. But I love my brother 💙.
Yep I haven’t moved out yet either 😂 working on it
This was the time when you actually needed talent to make music. Billy Joel is my perfect evening artist to play
Jarvis Longoria Yass
U still need talent to make music actually
Yesss when people used to sing and play live ! 😂
when did you not need talent to make music?
@@topfloorb0ss No. Not necessarily. One can program canned MIDI machines.
THAT BASS LINE
I know right 👍👍👍
You have to wonder if Billy Joel had any idea at this point in his career that one day he would be considered one of the greatest musicians of his time, become a multi-millonaire, and marry a super-model? He certainly "moved up"...
...went bankrupt, divorced super model, made horrible do wop music to please supermodel got fat. Yet he remains my fav rock and roll artist. 1st 5 albums magic (not counting cold spring harbor). Glass houses is acceptable, and next one ok. But downfall came from Innocent Man onward. I stopped going to his concerts (4 total I think for me) because he'd play the do wop crap that went away from the rock and roll I loved
This album was his big break. No doubt after this he could write a hit.
I suspect he was working pretty hard to get there, no doubt he earned it!
Hes a idiot for getting married dont know why you people are fucking brain washed into thinking you have too marry someone to be happy
@@thelegendkillersshittyduff1335 Preach it. She got half for looking hot. Crazy.
Another song from Billy that makes me sad thinking about my ex (whom I still love) boyfriend Max...who I will love forever till I die, which will be soon as I am very old...but love Billy Joel's songs..thank you for singing them.
Lisa hope you're keeping well xx
Songs have a wonderful way of reminding us of certain things. The good and the bad. I hope life has been well with you. Try to be happy. It's such a pretty song. Much love
Wonderful! Back when songs were clear and told a story, Mr. Joel you are a living legend, sir! Thank you for opening up our souls!
I wish I could turn back time to get there again. Thanks for the journey. Great memory.
Absolutely love him and his voice.
Billy you were on another level... Today's artists can't even match half of your talent
I love how he is giving all he got on this performance. He is an absolute legend! ❤
Love the scat singing at the end. What a talent. Nobody like him...ever.
The master. There once were many, now there's few *true* musical geniuses living.
They are treasures and it hurt to know they are leaving us.
There's still plenty, what's popular is not an indication. Music industry is different now, top of the charts isnt all there is. There's so much independent/under the radar stuff out there that's amazing. Sadly it just doesnt exist to most older folks.
Movin' Out, Just the way You Are, She's Always A Woman, Only The Good Die Young... all four were top 40 hits off of Billy Joel's mega selling 1977 album The Stranger. The album stayed in the top 40 album charts for 70 weeks and was the biggest selling album for Columbia Records during the 1970s.
And yet the best song of the record, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, wasn't even a single
Chasers The Stranger is an incredible song too.
Personal fav is 52nd street. Honesty, My Life, Zanzibar Stilletto and rosalindas eyes are all perfect
And Vienna
I have the original album
Billy Joel in his prime, and at his best!
This song is hard. I never felt anyone could make you bob your head to a classic rock song. Bob your head like a rap song. This song was way ahead of its time. Lyrics melody etc.
Billy and the boyz bang forever for this one!!!!!!
I couldn't take it no more thanks Billy I finally told her That I'm Moving Out....🔥🔥
Absolutely love the original band. All the boys from the neighborhood. This is so awesome. Always liked the use of the sax on the late 70s early 80s songs. Watching the documentary of the Russia concert and you could just tell by the atmosphere a change was coming. Everything changed on Storm Front...

I hear people talk shit about Billy Joel...he hasn't had any hit songs since the 80's or 90's ...yada yadda.. This man is one of America's greatest songwriters and performers. I have been a lifelong fan of his since the beginning all the way back to Cold Spring Harbour...74 years young and still an amazing musician.
This song/version is addictive.
Coming from a guy born in 93 this is about as raw talent as it gets 🤘

His hands move so fast! That’s such true talent 😩!
Been lovin this song for decades. What a great musicians, indeed👏🙌❤❤ Salute Sir Billy 🫡🫰🖤
After listening to this many times, I'm actually enjoying this more than the original. He's sung it very close to the original and getting to see him in action, his facial expressions (his biting his lip, his smiling when saying polish the fenders,...), his left handwaves, his bandmates adds to the fun. Just wish the camera would show us what he was playing on the keyboards with his right hand in the beginning.
I just heard this song on the radio and I gotta say it’s fire 🔥 🔥🔥🔥
Still in the throes of Superstar fame, Billy is clearly digging the shit out of himself. I've seen him four times, been privileged to see Billy four times, River of Dreams Tour '93 (Cincinnati); Billy W/Elton John Face To Face Ohio State Late summer '94; Philly Feb 18, '98
and once more in Philly a few years later. He still had his range, A Billy Joel concert is an emotional work out; the man knows how to take his fans along with him for a ride!!
Brilliant to see these uploads

King of the 80’s !! Yes I know this song came out in 77 but he’s got to be face of 80’s
3:13 One of my favorite moments in live music. They really nailed the song.
One of the best songs from an amazing album. You're the best Billy!
Old Grey Whistle test was the gold standard of live performances for bands. A lot of really cool groups showcased their considerable live chops on here. I wish there was a show like this now, it’d really raise the bar for the current crop of “artists” and show how valuable skill and talent is, and that auto tune and sequencers can only get one so far.
When I was a kid(born in ‘71), I was always thought of Billy Joel as sounding so “New York”. Still do, actually.
From a guy who loves HIP HOP, R&B , Disco, 80s New Wave & some rock This Masterpiece will always be in my top 10 - Great Song FANTASTIC ARTIST!
0:42 The reflection of the guitarist's hand makes it appear that he and the bass player are in perfect sync.
His sound is embedded in my mind and it is attached to my many great memories and nostalgia of the time .
The first Billy Joel song I ever heard ...& started a life-long love affair with his music! I'm now 60 ffs!
Another Classic New York Attitude all inside the song.
