Lyrics:
Anthony works in the grocery store
Savin' his pennies for some day
Mama Leone left a note on the door,
She said,
'Sonny, move out to the country.'
Oh but workin' too hard can give you a heart attack
You oughta know by now
Who needs a house out in Hackensack?
Is that all you get for your money?
And it seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama, if that's movin' up then I'm movin' out.

So do I ...
Can y’all imagine Billy’s stories from the 1970s in NYC? Absolutely incredible and unimaginable when Studio 54 was around. This dude was a king in the city.
And he was good at including landmarks when he gave out directions
This album is just ridiculously amazing. Hit after hit on it. Joel’s unreal.
Probably one of the greatest of all time. Couldnt agree more.
Although the album is older than I am, I still have the original vinyl. All credit to my father (a pianist himself) for introducing me to Billy Joel and for the opportunity to see him in concert. I was a teenager unashamed of going places with my parents, and I smiled and clapped just as much as my dad. Miss him, this album is easily one of Joel's best.

Great song, sure, but... one of the greatest songs ever? Cmon man. Does your scope of music go anywhere beyond 70s-90s western music?
Growing up in an Italian family in Brooklyn this song came out right when the “successful” in my family were moving to Jersey. There were also more painful things happening within the family. This song captured that inner knowing that just making good $$ was never going to be enough for me… I was going to have to leave home and ultimately the East Coast to find out what else was really important in my life.
What a great song.. I just shared it w/ my daughter.. she’s at that age when the emptiness of school and societal expectations is something she’s grappling with. Good songwriting is one of the most essential forms of human creativity. Thanks BJ!
Thanks (for the) BJ!
Blah blah blah
@@jl2937 Lmao, you seem like the type of person most people would avoid irl.
I never knew this song was about that. What an insight take on this. This is why Billy is so big on the East Coast. We on the West Coast like the music but dont have the same POV.
Yup same experience in my family growing up in Queens. Those who "made it" went to Florida. Now only a few of us remain and the rest of the family has scattered to the winds.
I'm not even that big of a fan, but this song has possessed me. I wake up hearing it. I find myself humming it constantly. He may have something here.
I think it must play on the radio at one of the places I play, because it's been in my head for weeks and now I just have to add it to the repertoire.
I suggest you start discovering the music of Billy Joel. Try some tunes. He is one of the best composers ever. I am no joking : he is one of the greats.

As a kid, whenever I heard "My life" on the radio, I would have such a feeling of well-being over my whole body. Something about the chords and rhythm I guess, but now I am an adult I can never seem to get that happy vibe the same way.

Basically a song putting down blue collar people, telling them their life sucks while gloating about "making it big" himself.

(and of course the music) .. just phenomenal song.
The way the bass tone and guitar tone mesh is so beautiful. It really brings out that bassline and gives it a life of its own. I have always really admired this song for that bassline
Yes, it’s the backbone of the song really.
I think there’s definitely an element of the Led Zepp approach in songs like Heartbreaker as far as the powerful guitar and bass in unison. Even the tone of the riff reminds me of LZ’s Heartbreaker. No surprise, as I believe Billy was a big Zepp fan. Great taste. 🤘

His lyrics are authentic poems woven with simple words and common situations, performed with an unforgettable energy and a tremendous talent. i think this song is about how people conform to society. everyone wants to make it big with lots of money and fancy, fast cars. we as humans don’t need all of this to be happy. simple lives is what we were made to have. lots of materialistic things like money and cars and clothes and technology just lead to fighting and wars.
As a scapegoat of an NPD family obsessed with materialism, status and image who moved out, this is my song.
to me, there's four types of simple lifes: 1. the people who have no choice but to live a simple life, 2. the people who had it all, but realized that it's all a rigged psychopathic game, and left. 3. the people who fake living simple while still being rich. and finally 4. understanding that the workers who create the work can and should own the workplace.

@@General_Grievance but would it be better to depressed in a 3 bedroom in London, or not to be depressed in a one bedroom in Lancaster?
