- In this restored footage of "James Taylor In Concert," James performs @TheCaroleKing's classic song, "You've Got a Friend" on the popular @BBC series "In Concert" on November 13, 1971. James is joined by Carole King on piano, Leland Sklar on bass and Russ Kunkel on percussion.
In 1971, Carole released her album "Tapestry" and James released "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon." "You've Got a Friend" appeared on both albums and James's single of the song reached #1 on the Billboard 100 and #4 on the UK Singles Chart. Both albums won Grammy Awards for the song (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Song of the Year). Carole has said that she wrote "You've Got a Friend" in response to this lyric in James's song "Fire and Rain": "I've seen lonely times when i could not find a friend".
"In Concert" was produced by the BBC in the early '70s and featured performances from legendary acts of the time.

LYRICS
You've Got a Friend - by Carole King
When you’re down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothing
Oh, nothing is going right
Just close your eyes and think of me
Yes, and soon I will be there
To brighten up
Oh, even your darkest nights
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running
To see you again
It’s winter, spring, summer or fall
Now all you got to do is call on me
And I will be there, yeah, yes, I’ll be there
You’ve got a friend
If the sky high above you
Should grow dark and full of clouds
And that old cold north wind
Should begin to blow
Just keep your poor head together now
And call my name out loud, you know
Pretty soon
I’ll be knocking on your door
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running
To see you again
It’s winter, spring summer or fall
Really, all you got to do is call
And I’ll be there
You know I’ll be there
Oh, ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend
When people can be so cold
They’ll hurt you, yes, and desert you
Well, they’ll take your soul if you let them
But don’t you let them
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running like as fast as I can
To see you again
Oh, yes, don’t you know about that
Winter, spring, summer or fall
Oh, all you’ve got to do is call
And I will be there
Yeah, yes, I’ll be there
You’ve got a friend
You’ve got a friend
Ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend
Walking and talking and everything friend
Well, I said everybody here tonight in Pittsfield
No matter how low you may go sometimes
Ought to take some consolation in one thing, oh, yeah
Ain’t it good to know
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
You’ve got a friend

Amén!
Thanks for sharing your memories. So wonderful that you had a husband and a best friend in the same person. Love it that you two would sing this song.
❤
And he still loves you. 🤗
He must have loved you so much
How humble is Carole ....she wrote the song ,but lets her friend James take the credit . James had been going through crisis with his addiction. She offered him the song to cover and release before she released it on her album! He got the accolades .....Now ain't that a friend ...? 💖
❤
I thought she wrote it in response to his song Fire and Rain?

I'm here in May of 2024. Great music never ages.
I recently lost my son who was not only my son but my best friend. We used to turn this song on in the car and both of us would sing this song to the top of our lung's. He would say mom you know you always have a friend in me. We played this song at his funeral. I miss him so much!! I know he is with Jesus now.
We're so sorry for your loss, Kimberly.
I'm sorry for you're loss
Yes he is with God in paradise ✨And we all be reunited there. And here we are never seperated. It's just we can't see. ❤ Much love to you and yours✨💞

Music today can never match up to music of the 60‘s and early 70‘s
So True
I am listening in 2024. Great song and I love Carole King.
James Taylor, Carole King, Carly Simon, Neil Diamond, the Carpenters: today’s musicians can’t hold a candle
52 years later all four musicians on this are still with us. How rock and roll is that?
Hey, I was 15 then. Their music was so important that it represented a generation. People who understood the Vietnam war. I'm so glad you can hear them. My regards.
Wow. You’re right and that’s incredible.
Theyve been good to life and others. Gods been very good to them.
the cream always rises to the top
Very rock and roll!! 🤘
Today is my Aunt's birthday. She passed away from cancer several years ago but she will always live on in my family's hearts through this song. Back in the 80's when my mother was moving to America and didn't know anyone other than my father. My aunt sent her a cassette tape recording of her singing this song for my mom. It will always bring a smile to my face. Life maybe hard sometimes but just remember that you got a friend. Be the light you want to see in the world. ❤️🕯️❤
I miss my husband whenever i heard this song, he passed away 4/18/23....this song makes me cry.
I'm so sorry for your los😥I'm here if need a friend?
I understand... many songs make me sentimental like that, especially as related to friends, or loved ones no longer here.
A message to you James Taylor: your songs are not just music, they are part of us, they are part of our lives. We thank you for everything you have done. Thanks.
Maravillosa, simplemente maravillosa esta canción. Felicidades!
Una bellissima performance, per una canzone molto bella!😊😍😘🎶🎸🎸🎶💘💓💋💯🌅
Amen, brother.

Well said! Indeed that's the truth.
My uncle was a Catholic priest from Liverpool. His funeral was last week. This was the song they played as we carried him out of the church. I will now, forever, have a special place for this song. There were 2000 people singing this in unison.
Sorry for you're loss Danny. God bless yall
Thats awesome.
Beautiful memory ❤
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
😢 beautiful❤
A man and a woman playing their instruments, and the only technology involved is to record the song, that folks is what talent looks like. ❤
That's talent!
I learned some guitar from a friend who played guitar in a bar and sang...u gotta be good to do that.solo
I am never stopped
Love JAMES TAYLOR
There is an electric bass.
@@pedrodepaca57And there's microphones and pickups and amps and PA's...so what's your point other than to be contrary...worthless.
This song lifts my spirits!
Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a friend?! ❤
Jesus is my friend
Carol King is a master songwriter the album Tapestry is a masterpiece
Still Listening to the 'Great' James Taylor in 2024
I think Carole King is a fabulous person. Imagine having her as a friend.
This was 50 years ago and I still love it. I lost my husband in April... we had been married 51 years. He too was my best friend~
😢 sorry to hear. Boy, I sure hope he had a good life..
God bless you. Be thankful of having this joy. I never found the right person nor knew how to deal with the possible lose of your best friend. I understand it now.
I’m SO very sorry for your loss.
Beautiful- I hope the memories of you husband sustain you.
Wow what a great love ❤ that was you must be so proud 🥲 but also you must miss him so much . Hope you’re ok and surrounded by love . From a complete stranger in New Zealand wishing you all the best ❤
Those of us who are a little older...We lived through a very special time in music! Truly!
So true
I doubt that there will ever be music like the music we grew up with!
I used to sing this to my son when he was a baby. I guess you could say it’s our song. His last day of high school, I sent him this song. I didn’t expect a response. But he texted back, “all you have to do is call and I’ll be there.” I have never been so overcome with emotion.❤️. We love you James! My husband and I have been to several of your concerts!!!🙏🏻
you made me cry tears of joy
Jean, I am glad my story touched your heart. I will never forget that moment with my son🙏🏻
Wow. Wonderful story 😊
@@trumpgirl9291 good times ❤
I've seen him a couple of times and he was great. I used to sing Sweet Baby James to my son during the 3:00 a.m. feeding
Technology has ruined everything... It will never be like this again. But at least I was along for the ride. And for that I couldn't be more grateful. 🎼🎶🎼
😊SO,A TRUE SONG

So beautiful. Carole King and James Taylor are truly friends. She gave this song to her Friend because she loved her friend. James Taylor took us to another level with his recording of this beautiful song. I love them both. Carole King and James Taylor have been so important to me with their meaningful music and message. I’m 65 years old. Thank you both for helping me through the years.❤️
Most beautiful song ever
Oh sweet baby James and Carole King. The good old days. Things were so much simpler then.
Indeed but this is how it goes, both good and evil become more complex and sophisticated, we just have to learn to retrieve the good stuff we lost along the way:-)! We're all evolving in the eternal dance of light and darkness of the Universe.
How i wish this 2023 generation can be inspired with JT's music.
One of the greatest songs I've ever heard.
It always comforts me.
My spanish taxi driver plays this to his customers.
The entire 'Tapestry' album (songs of Carole King) was just one of the best collections of songs in the entire world.
ABSOLUTELY
Amen sister
It’s simply the best collection of songs ever. My favourite album 🥰
Oh yes!❤
For some of us at a certain age, it was one of THOSE pieces of music that recreates memories and tell us who we were.
Carol's music carried me through some dark times in the '70s. I still have her Tapestry Album. Love you girl!!
Warm hearted man ! My favorlte song ! I miss 70's ! Thank you James !
😢❤I play this in memory of our beautiful dog named Billy who sadly went to doggy heaven 17th sept 2021 due to kidney failure. The most beautiful dog. He was 15 yrs. 😢😊❤❤ Miss him so much. Jack russell x
50 years later, it means just as much to me.
I remember my ex wife singing this to our not yet born child at bedtime. Then she was born, Robina, and momma still sung it to her at bedtime. I would listen downstairs and hope I would never forget such a memory. What a blessing. ❤️
Such beautiful memories of a truly loving family. 😇
what a timeless classic. they made some great music together.
I loved this song in 1971 and I love it now. ❤️
Two incredibly gifted people, who have brought joy to us with their music. Such a special song.
Accompanied by two incredibly gifted people who's been the foundation for countless artists / bands
for decades. Leland Sklar and Russ Kunkel.
And they continue to bring us joy ... 😊🌷🌈😝
❤️
I was born in 1962 and I had parents who loved music, especially my mother. The radio was always on. I didn't realize how lucky I was to grow up with these musical artists and their songs visiting into our house all through the day, every day.
I was born in 1964 and this is the music of my childhood.. I had a young Mom who loved music and played it constantly, instilling a love for "her" music that lives on in me to this day!
M3 2
I was born in 1963 my mom loved it all too
@@tbublzciao amico!🙋😍😘💘🌅
I was too, but I never saw them on TV. It was (low fi) audio (overheard from other people's radios) making an impression on me when I was a little kid.
I wish this was true. I wish I had that person. The good friends I remember from back in the day when we all listened to this have faded in the distance and gone. Nobody's gonna come running. Nice that there was once a time though...
I haven't had a friend for 7 years, been surrounded by toxic people
This song puts a lump in my throat. So great!
Crazy that this is 51 years ago. But it’s so fresh and relevant and contemporary feeling.
Timeless
One of the greatest songs ever written, here sung by one of the greatest musicians ever born.
YES...💯💖🤝👋🙌🙌👏👏🎵🎼🎶
When I was a baby, my mother taught me the Four Seasons By singing the song to me. She would sing it at night to me to put me to bed. I still have vivid memories as a young child, and my mother singing this beautiful tune. She would replace the word "me" with "Jesus". I am now learning this on guitar at 30 Years old. I intend to sing to anyone that needs a friend. And I've already performed for my mother. Thank you, James Taylor and Carole King. God bless you both. Amen.
Amazing friends & collaborators of iconic music.
Thank you... Tapestry still one of the greatest albums of all time
I´m 67, I´ve tried to but couldn´t stop them, as hard as I could, quiet tears finally were streaming down my face. Emotion, feelings and goosbumps, the memories of my dearest 70´s.
I hope you're keeping well ❤️
Boy that sure takes me back to a good time in my life. Thanks James (and Carole) for all the music.
Wow I REMEMBER THIS WHEN I WAS 13 . AND STILL JUST AS GREAT.💯👍
Dear Mrs. King and Mr. Taylor: Thanks a whole bunch for this meaningful masterpiece. This song is one of my favorites of all time! I grew up listening to it, and now, in my sixties, I'm still in awe! God bless you both, and fill your days with health, love, and happiness! Love, and best wishes from São Paulo, Brazil.
This song is for my mum,she has terminal cancer and is always there for me,Im having it played for her funeral from me.😭
Praying for you both. 🙏♥️
I know you don't know me but I would like to say a prayer for you and your mom. I lost my mom in 1996 and my dad in 2003. You're in my prayers my far away friend.
We re all the présent of your mum .
Don t admit the dead is refuse the birth.

♥️
I'm sorry for your loss. It speaks to the good relationship you had with your mom when it hurts so much to be over 💔😭
These tunes are timeless. Brings back very fond memories. WOW look how young they were. Just awesome.
It makes me sad that no one writes and sings songs like this anymore!
❤❤❤
that's because their too busy thinking about themselves and not their audience.
oh man!!!!!!!!!! So beautiful, even after all these years, tears.
Little did the both of them know how influential they would be in the history of music
This made me cry. So beautiful..
James Taylor got me through so many bad times. ❤
I love how at the start Carole looks over him with such a warm, caring and loving way. There's no words to describe her influence on music for nearly six decades but for me it's her gentleness, kindness and how grounded and humble that makes her so captivating
she was so in love with him but he was “ just so far away” 😞 so so beautiful
She seems so humble in this clip but really what a driving force behind it all.
Truly.
It's been 12 years since my Dad passed away . I wish I could have sung this song for him just once . You were a good man and that will forever be my guide to live a beautiful life. Love you Dad😇
My dad was my best friend 👍
Thank you for sharing ... I'm blessed as well my dad was my best friend while growing up .. Lucky to have our mom ... Romance should never be lost ... So glad we have utube to share our thoughts with live concerts should help heal our very complicated world right now °•`\|< >
Go ahead and sing the song anyway... he's near and always listening
I sang this song to my (now beloved wife) when I first met her 41 years ago. I am always moved to tears when I hear this song, and it has its permanent place in many of my playlists I play in our house. Now again, seeing this very early performance of this song that has such a big meaning in my life, I am touched to tears. - "for whatever that's worth"😀

Tears of Joy!!! I never experienced this until I got Baptized(Born Again) Catholic at age 42=. now Tears of Joy is a gift God (Jesus) gives me regularly!!!!
No matter how long ago it was written and recorded, it still gives me goosebumps. Thanks, James Taylor and Carole King for this jewel!
A comforting song that whispers to the soul and renders a warm sense of hope in a world that challenges all of us. It never ages.
Seeing artists in their prime, especially from the 1960s-1970s, is always a magical, surreal experience.
Yes, very true🌸
Four legends.. I lost my wife a month ago, she was my best friend, I miss her dearly. She lover James and Caroles music.
We're so sorry for your loss, Patrick.

You Know it!
Lovely song performed brilliantly by the magical James Taylor and the wonderful Carole King. Thank you very much for the beauty of music you give the world. 🎼👏🤗
When MUSIC WAS MUSIC!! Still has meaningful life 51 years later
difference among art made at those times and products they make today
AGREED
Agree too!!!
Thanks Mr Taylor
Such a beautiful version of this song! I love hearing Carol King play the piano while James Taylor sings and plays the guitar. I also love how he gives Carol credit for writing the song.
Both are talented musicians in their own right. I’ve enjoyed listening to both of them since the early 70’s. This song will always have a soft spot in my heart. 🌻❤🎵
According to Taylor, Carole King told him that this song was a response to his 1970 hit "Fire and Rain," where Taylor sings, "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend." King's musical response: "you've got a friend right here."
I love both songs but didn't know the history of them. Thank you
That's awesome!
Thank you for that historic piece of info! I was but a youngster in the heat of the singer/songwriter era, and my first exposure to James' legend was his greatest hits on cassette. His friendship with Carole is that of two genius musical minds and souls and everything I learn about their careers adds depth to that era of great music.
this is so beautiful to know, who'd have thought - and then she GAVE it to him to sing
Good to know
These live recordings sound insanely good. The analogue equipment from this era is so good, and such care was put into sound quality
Both audio and video have been restored.
BBC have always been *insanely* good at quality, e.g. using top-of-the-line recording equipment and mics when others might settle for (a lot) less.
Well said. Sounds great.
No auto-tune garbage!
❤ such a lovely song I have listened to this for years❤
Cool, huh ??
Again .....because I like this song 🎵 🇨🇦🌎
On bass we have the bass guru, the legend... Leland Sklar.
I wondered if that was leland!!! A now living legend and humble and genuine as it gets. An icon. What a path he has walked
@@melincognito1938 The beard might be a bit of a giveaway :)
The man, my ex-husband always thought he should be the bass player, not Leland.
You got Taylor and Carol King two iconic and prolific song writers how can you go wrong
This is a timeless classic that melts the heartstrings
He can transport you back to the 70s with so much ease. What an iconic voice that never changes.
Yes
Just 51 years and still a great song! Carol King; amazing! When music was king James Taylor!
You've got a friend great song after all these years.
A most beautiful song, loved it back then, fast forward to October 2023, and it hits differently, but in that sweet & perfect spot.
This was very, very well performed. I don’t care what world you’re from.
Always loved this song since I was 17 and today I’m 69 still sounds good with so many good memories ❤

I was bullied as a child. I had buck teeth and a big nose. They called me “RAT”…. My Mommy always played this for me on bad days. Now 23 yrs happily married ❤️
What a lovely Mother! Do you play it to your spouse? xx
I have an over bite and I have kinda pointed ears ( Spock or elf ) I’m 64 and in 1974 use to sneak this record from my sister and find peace .

And for the record , I’m thankful for my ears and teeth . God Bless . Peace .

That was my nickname too! So nice that I don't care anymore. Glad to hear you were able to move on too and not let that baggage weigh you down ✨
You should have said if your a Rat your the most special Rat. ♥️
I simply love this song. It reminds me of my dad who valued friendship & family so much. Thanks for sharing.
And... the legend is in the background tinkering with the piano. Love James Taylor. Love Carole King *more*
Many thanks James Taylor for a most beautiful song...

That what I call real music! Done by real artists, not computers. Thats good straigth forward music & real emotions today, yesterday and tomorrow too!
Thank you, James Taylor and Carol King, you both have sung songs that I like, the message is that we must increase friends for peace, not dependency.
As a baby boomer, this WAS one of the songs that SHAPED me. It was NOT the church , but your music. I sincerely thank you for voicing how I felt, but liked the words!❤
My favorite James Taylor song of all time. thans Carol for writing it.
I can call you so many times... Dedicated to my best friend, who left us years ago. We used to sing this song together.🎶🎵👌👍
This song, that voice, those musicians.., Simply woww..
The power of music! Listening to this song automatically throws me back to my teens, my friends at the time and when life was so simple with no worries ❤️.
What happens when a great songwriter meets the most beautiful voice ever in the early 70's? Simply, music history is made !! Thank you James! ❤
My dad introduced me to James Taylor with this song. Just beautiful
What a great song, I love so many of Carol Kings songs!
Cela doit faire 50 ans que j adore james taylor .je connais ses chansons par coeur.I love you
‘71 - Wow! I was a kid in an adult world then. There’s James giving us a shout of hope in a world moving through depression of the VN war. Imagine what goes through a kids mind when the world is soothing itself and healing somewhat from those turbulent times? Are we the new generation of healers and light, more sensitive to the emotions of others? I think James and Carole started a feeling and sensitivity revolution that helped us in many ways.
He was 23 years old! Pure talent!
Bloody beautiful!
Carole King is a genuine legend. Her Tapestry album is a classic. She and Gerry Goffin wrote so many great songs during the '60s and beyond.
Thanks Carole. ✌️
