Lyrics:
A bottle of white, a bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rose instead
We'll get a table near the street
In our old familiar place
You and I, face to face
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
It all depends upon your appetite
I'll meet you any time you want
In our Italian Restaurant
Things are okay with me these days
Got a good job, got a good office
Got a new wife, got a new life
And the family's fine
We lost touch long ago
You lost weight I did not know
You could ever look so nice after
So much time
Do you remember those days hanging out
At the village green
Engineer boots, leather jackets
And tight blue jeans
Drop a dime in the box play the
Song about New Orleans
Cold beer, hot lights
My sweet romantic teenage nights
Brenda and Eddie were the
Popular steadys
And the king and the queen
Of the prom
Riding around with the car top
Down and the radio on
Nobody looked any finer
Or was more of a hit at the
Parkway Diner
We never knew we could want more
Than that out of life
Surely Brenda and Eddie would
Always know how to survive
Brenda and Eddy were still going
Steady in the summer of '75
When they decided the marriage would
Be at the end of July
Everyone said they were crazy
Brenda you know you're much too lazy
Eddie could never afford to live that
Kind of life
But there we were wavin' Brenda and
Eddie goodbye
They got an apartment with deep
Pile carpet
And a couple of paintings from Sears
A big waterbed that they bought
With the bread
They had saved for a couple
Of years
They started to fight when the
Money got tight
And they just didn't count on
The tears.
They lived for a while in a
Very nice style
But it's always the same in the end
They got a divorce as a matter
Of course
And they parted the closest
Of friends
Then the king and the queen went
Back to the green
But you can never go back
There again
Brenda and Eddie had had it
Already by the summer of '75
From the high to the low to
The end of the show
For the rest of their lives
They couldn't go back to
The greasers
The best they could do was
Pick up the pieces
We always knew they would both
Find a way to get by
That's all I heard about
Brenda and Eddie
Can't tell you more than I
Told you already
And here we are wavin' Brenda
And Eddie goodbye
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight
I'll meet you anytime you want
In our Italian Restaurant - Hudba
Mad props to the guy on sax. Two instruments, backup vocs, and he played air guitar on his sax when there was nothing else for him to do. 10/10.
Mark Rivera is his name
And he's still touring with Billy today.
goosebumps when I hear his little part at 5:45
Are you not counting air guitar as an instrument?
@@henrymarks2237 Alto sax, soprano sax and air guitar make 3!
Billy's Bohemian Raphsody
Yep, bet he was told it was too long!
more like Queen's Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
More like Billy's Jungleland.

Exactly
One of my favorite Billy Joel songs
This song is everything. Its fast, its slow, its powerful, its soft, its big, its small. Perfection.
Couldn’t have said it better
and it's a STORY.... I think it may be one of the best songs. You're right - this song is EVERYTHING - PERFECTION
Perfect performance !
Just fell in love with this song all over again...
Its a 1 song rock opera
Sax man earned his pay.
@Arthur Kitchen Is this true??? :0
@Arthur Kitchen Which one, he's had four?
The sax player Mark Rivera is still in the band today and is the longest serving member, so Billy must be very understanding then.
He always does.
Totally
Mark Rivera
If Billy doesn't get his own movie called "piano man" I'll lose faith in this world.
NAV 4M ikr
It will be called New York State Of Mind.
@@kencummings953 whatever be the name, but we need a movie!!!
He deserves it, but he wouldn’t want it. As he said himself “I’ve had my say....”
It should be called My Life
"here we are waving Brenda and Eddie goodbye" seems to hit me in my heart. Why is that my favorite lyric in a great song?
My favorite Billy Joel song ever.
My now-wife and I initially bonded over this song. Celebrated our 25th anniversary last December 2023. Oh, and we named one of our twin daughters, Alexa Rae, after Billy's own Alexa Ray.
Billy Joel ranks this song as his best song ever.
You will never see a better live performance of this piece than this recording. His band was a tight as they would ever be, his vocals absolutely peaked, and his playing off the charts.
Carnegie Hall 1977 is better IMO. There's no video, tho.
I could not agree more! I have paid an obscene amount of money to see him live four times! I don’t think I paid enough!! Insane talent this guy
What year was this?
@@laserbeamlightning probably '83.
Carlos Conesa Carbonell theres video for some songs
ONE OF THE BEST MUSIC VIDEOS EVER TOP 5...?
This is my dad's favorite Billy Joel song...and slowly, over the years, it's becoming my favorite as well. It's got everything good about Mr.Joels songwriting rolled into one.
It's sad to think kids in the future may not get to experience this pure bliss of music.
May his music never die
I really love Mr Billy Joel's live performances.
“Cold beer, hot lights, my sweet romantic teenage nights”.........what an awesome line.
I hope it’s reflective of his personal life, because he’s had an up and down one , it seems. It seems like pain and artistry go together with some. But the result is meaningful to the audience.
I think this might be one of finest compositions ever. It sounds amazing live.
This has to be one of the best live performances of any song by any singer, ever. Absolutely Fantastic.
Unbelievable
I believe this was NYE at Nassau Coliseum early 90s. I was there. I remember the guitarist in the red shirt....hubba hubba
He is one of the greatest live performers you will ever see.
@@pittstaffio It was in 1982 or 1983 I'm pretty sure
Absolutely. I hear Billy Joel is ending his residency at MSG this year 2024. Amazing song writer and entertainer😊
Liberty!
looks like his hand was hurt, bandage and he keeps shaking it like it's cramping up, and yet still puts on an amazing performance.
regina v. I'd have to double check but could be after the motorcycle accident
just hurt after those octaves haha
He’s the piano man for a reason
I to noticed that immediately . As it reminded me of myself playing back around 1998 - 2000 and having to shake my hands to wake them up = calcium blocking circulation in the wrists = Carpal Tunnel Surgery .
I had both wrists operated on - it took a few months with hand-wrist exercises . . and I have had little problems getting back playing multiple instruments ever since .
Thank Gawd !! . . cuz everybody Knows THAT " I LoVe My Music "
It was right after his motorcycle accident
Just met Mark Rivera today. He came to my bar for a glass of red before a movie. He was incredibly polite. After picking my jaw up off the floor I played it cool and said “oh you look familiar” he said “where do you think you know me from” I said “ever been to the garden” he laughed and said “yeah I’m a gardener I work with flowers”. I will never forget this interaction!
There aren't words to describe how amazing this is. Takes me back. Thanks Billy. Killer band.
Fun Fact: That guy on the sax sang and played in tons of billy joel songs, whether music video or audio. He still plays live with Billy today.
Dudus Rex What is his name?
@@lucyfoster4082 Mark Rivera
Very close relationship: Mark Rivera.
He's a boss
He had only recently got the job as the newest band member at the time of this tour, which might explain his enthusiasm and he had not even played on any Billy Joel recordings yet.
And now he is the longest serving member in Billy's current band.
What I love about this performance is that everyone on stage seems to be having the time of their lives
Playing with people of that skills level would be a LOT of fun, indeed. I don't think they were faking it or just acting.
Right?....electric
Keep in mind that Billy Joel is playing through intense pain. That's why his fingers are taped and he is shaking his hands every now and then. This was after that motorcycle accident that injured his hands. Playing through pain AND having the time of his life!! 🎵🎶🎭🎵🎶
@@girlfromthebronxbywayofelb7288 ? @#BrenderAndEddystone?
Enjoy it while you can. The bill later on will be a killer to pay.
Billy Joel is one the greats of our time. Thanks Billy for all of your music.
This song is like a theatrical play. Awesome songwriting and performance. But then again, hey, it's Billy Joel. What else would you expect.
Billy Joel, one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time!
We are already looking forward to welcoming Billy for the 3rd time in New York for his very last show at MSG on July 25, 2024.
Those left hand octaves at high speed while having an injured thumb would be murder.
When you're in your element, in the zone, you're indifferent to the pain, right
The World in 75: "Wow, that Bohemian Rhapsody song was so good. No one will ever come close to that masterpiece."
2 years later, Billy: "Hold my red"
"Shine On, You Crazy Diamond", is 1975, although, the late Syd Barrett was not Bohemian, nor was he a Homosexual. He might have worn tasteful, form fitting Women's Clothing and asked his Pink Floyd brethren to "Break" some "Free" Bread, at an Italian Restaurant. Who the hell, has not.
I've been thinking how this song reminds me of Bohemian Rhapsody, but make it Billy Joel :p so many layers and change ups, and tells a story. So damn good.
@@ihavefallenandicantreachmy2113 bro why are you coming in here commending someone for not being gay
@@theshimmyking1514 heteros are rare today
Queen is my absolute favourite band ever and I will never like anyone even close to how I like them, but I have to admit this masterpiece is way better than bohemian rhapsody.
Man...this just never gets old.
I’m 70ish now, but oddly I 🩷 Billy Joel 🎤 + 🎹 music MORE now than when I was younger! Unfortunately I missed out on his most recent concert in my area bc of being overseas on the dates 😥. He’s not only THE ‘Piano Man’ but a 👍 singer too imo!
No auto-tune. No choreographers. No half-dressed backup dancers. No laser light show. Just pure musical talent. G*d how I miss this.
Since no one was dancing, choreography is a moot point.
Hazwaste63 also no lip syncing and pre-recorded backing tracks.
Ok boomer
Scott R I’m 20, studying music, and have worked my ASS off since I was five to get where I am. The best concerts I have ever seen are the ones like this, where it’s just good, live music and great musicians. There’s nothing wrong with the new way of performing concerts. But I’m my opinion, 90% of the time it’s just a cover for the fact that the artists can’t sing it as well live as the studio recording. There are some very good live singers, like Bruno Mars, Ariana, Gaga, Beyoncé, etc, and even they have to put on a ridiculously overproduced show because apparently just music itself doesn’t cut it anymore. So, Mr “Ok boomer,” maybe try keeping the insults to yourself next time. Thanks.
100% agreed.
Could you imagine being there for this concert? That’d be amazing.
Meme God I very possibly was...
I was and it is because of God I have been able to see Billy Joel live close to 100 times.
Matthew O'Buck and TicketMaster
@@adamsasso1 funny! Haha. I am 56 and began going to concerts in 77. Elton John just about as many times!
@@MattOBuck Do you live near Long Island? I've seen many of our famous Cali locals 100 times....Billy? A dozen. Need more!
Only one bad show, and that was the venue's fault. Staged in a baseball stadium, they turned the stage so the Billy freaks (that would be me) who paid for top tier tickets got the worst seats! Too big a venue!
As musicians, there are moments when performing live where everything lines up perfectly. If you’re lucky enough in this world to experience that, it is a rush of euphonium you can’t describe. You can feel it from Billy and his band at the end. Hands down one of the best live performances I have ever seen in my life. Bravo. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Completely agree
I'm 64 years old, still love this song !!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm 90 and still love the song. Reminds me of my favourite italian restaurant which is no more.
from 4:20 to 4:40 is when Billy fully transcends himself into The Piano Man
Doesn’t even look like he’s playing the keys and just smashing them out of pure adrenaline yet somehow he nails every note.
@@0mnicide i mean your not wrong
He's treating his piano the way Steve Vai treats his guitar. You gotta wonder how long those instruments last.
How the keys aren’t flying off the piano as he goes ape shit on it is a wonder to me...
Reminds me of Schroeder from the Charlie Brown cartoons.
billy looks at Liberty when he forgets the lyrics. 2:10 he says "Yeah I know I saw it" hilarious
I believe he said" I know what I said"
Possibly the best bit of sax playing ever
Do any of you know that he trained to be a concert pianist? That is why he is so good at music theory, chords, and the fingerwork. I wish I knew him - he is a distant cousin of mine.
The first time I saw Billy in the late 70's in St. Louis. I expected a guy, a piano, a cigarette smoking on the piano next to a cocktail glass: An intimate evening with a piano crooner with an almost invisible backing band. Holy Shit could those guys rock! Billy was all over the stage, jumping on and off the piano, Liberty was smashing the drums, Richie Cannota was a sax god! The energy on stage, the complexity of the music, Billy's voice from sweet to growl, in his prime. Amazing. Just amazing.
Same here in 81 Allentown Tour Had no Idea ...
wish i was there
Went to several of Billy's shows over the years. ALWAYS a GREAT night out.
Yeah, that would have been around when they did the Old Grey Whistle Test recording, I think, and yeah, if you go expecting just "the piano man", you were in for a shock. Joel, Richie, and Liberty were all absolute beasts and in their prime.
Love the growl!
the sax guy sounds mighty good
His name is Mark Rivera.
Fuck yeah he does
Sorry I was at 421 when I commented got me all pumped up
"The sax guy" You better watch your mouth friend! 😉
"Cold Beer Hot Lights, My sweet romantic teenage nights"

The song is about a restaurant in Syosset, Long Island.....a very Italian restaurant.....Christianos i believe.....
Back when songs told a story not just a flippant thought
So, what we have here is a true American Master. Billy writes his superb music, plays excellent piano, has a strong lead voice and surrounds himself with wonderful musicians. In other words, Billy Joel is the complete package. And, everything he does is at a very high level. Billy is up there with people like Paul McCartney and a few others. Unlike lesser performers, Billy understands music theory, and uses complex chord and melody structures. This leads to his songs having a unique feeling and sound, unlike some (Elton John comes to mind) where after a while, everything starts to sound the same. I grew up in Bethpage, Long Island, near Hicksville where Billy grew up. As a musician (my band was "Russ & the Vibrations) I was aware of who Billy was and that he was really good. It was gratifying to see someone become wildly successful because of their talent and hard work, as opposed to making it because of who you know. Billy is the real deal, and he has remained down to earth in spite of his success. He deserves his success and hopefully can share his gifts with the rest of us for many years to come. One word to sum up my feelings---------BRAVO Billy.
Whatever else you said may be true but NO WAY is he anywhere near Paul Mcartney.
Elton John and Billy Joel are on the same boat. Great songs. Great performers. The Beatles are not bad either. It's not a question of technique. Music theory often gets in the way of pure inspiration. I don't like Billy Joel for his skills as an instrumentist. I like the attitude and the world he is creating. The top musicians cannot write an interesting song. Legendary songwriters are pure amateurs.
So much better
Russ - you are 100% right. What fabulous talent! It reminds me of my days in Paris and Brussels in the 1970s, and now it brings tears to my eyes since it is so evocative. Few of us are endowed with such a gift. Alex
Oh man this is sheer undiluted classic talent! Always has been & will be my favourite ❣️
Love him😂 he looks dead at the camera and says “yeah I know I messed up” he’s so real
He's actually looking at his drummer. Billy has said that if he ever forgets the words, he looks at his drummer.
when did that happen? I watched it twice and don't see it
M J 2:06
he said "Yeah I know I saw it"
I think he says "I know how it goes"
I kinda wish Billy Joel would make a sequel to this song... Brenda and Eddie 50 years later
I have no idea why but I started tearing up during the intro when the guys raised their glasses to the crowd.

This is Billy Joel's best song ever. His piano playing and that sax. May so awesome 😎
This is awesome.
Imagine a Broadway musical of Billy Joel music.
This is a great idea 🎉
I love how Billy and his band are playing just as much to everyone on stage as they're playing to the crowd. Simply awesome!
Unbeatable
Still an incredible song. IInstantly takes me back to high school. What an amazing era of music!
I need to see Billy Joel live before he retires.
Speedstack21 you’ve got about 5 years, he’s on tour right now but I don’t think it’ll be his last
My wife got tickets for my birthday a few years ago to his show at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The show was absolutely fantastic. The whole audience was singing along with every song and the energy was amazing. If you have the option, see him in an old ballpark like Wrigley. He says they're his favorite places to play.
Bucket list
same
He puts on a really good show. When I saw him in 2006 in Syracuse, he played close to 3 hours. No opening band, just him rocking all night.
imagine seeing him with his home field advantage. Not even NYC, but on his island.
Dang. How many years later, and watching it on a cell phone, and dang if that energy still doesn’t come through. That middle instrumental section - jeez.
I played in a band in and after high school. Often the crowd is so pumped and connected that their energy bleeds off into you as a performer. You feel an intense rush and finish in clothes soaked with sweat. And it's one glorious thing to experience. We played a lot of gigs for free. The crowd payback was more than enough. Those sweet romantic teenage nights.
So what did we learn from this kids? Billy Joel is one of the best live performers ever.... and that glass of wine really knows how to dance.
Hello 👋how are you doing today?
"A couple of paintings from Sears"
It's always interesting how time passes and things go away. Like in a few years nobody being born will have ever heard of Sears, yet when I was growing up in the 2000s Sears was a super relevant place
Saw Billy live in a theater in Pgh when his first hit was rising the charts....it was like sitting in this crowd.....he was fabulous and he's never stopped....thanks Billy for all the great songs
They took this song to its limits and then brought it back down and landed it gently. Amazing performance!!!
It's a good ride.. 🎵
A wonderful description of a fantastic structured song reminds me of a musical song baci x
Billy Joel is a hell of a musician, and you may have noticed that his side men are the best at their position. He wouldn’t settle for less. And they all want to reach a little higher to please him. And We are the beneficiaries of all that. Damn I’m always impress.
I'm 16 and I love Billy Joel and his music. I'm playing this video right now and it's my 8th time in a row playing it back to back just sat at my laptop at 2:30am. Piano man will always be the most famous, but for me, THIS one edges it ! !
I met Billy Joel in person when he played a free concert at my University. He was so lovely. I found out he went to Bklyn College the year before my big Sister. He asked me what I thought of his beard because the drawing of him that I asked him to sign showed him clean-shaven. I replied, "For truth." He said, "Yes." I answered, "Not much." He proceeded to tell me, "My GF doesn't like it either, so I guess I'll have to shave it off." His GF at the time was Christie Brinkley, The Uptown Girl. As I walked away, he called out to me, "Go luck on your finals tomorrow", & I said, "Thanks, I need all the good wishes I can get."
Do you know what stood out the most about Billy Joel & that concert? His saxophonist, Richie Cannata, got a Standing O for his solo on "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant". Joel jumped on top of his piano & started clapping along with us. When Cannata finished, Joel told him to continue to play because that, pointing to us, is for you. Cannata played for another 5-10 minutes, & then Joel jumped off from his piano, sat down, & waited for the intro back into the song. That's one generous musician!
I'm 15, I love Billy and his music. Everytime I try to listen to one of his songs, I end up listening to 3 of his albums. I wish I could have seen him live when he was in his prime.
You're a deep soul, Joseph L.

I miss restaurants.
Because of your comment, I have a joke for you. A woman drives into a gas station to buy gas. After paying for the gas, she takes out a can of oil from the trunk of her car. She asks the worker to put it in for her. He explains, "We only put oil in cars if the customer bought the oil from us." Then she goes to complain to the manager. The manager asked the woman, "Ma'am, when you go to a restaurant, do you bring your own steak and eggs and say 'Here, cook them for me?"
