The entire top 20 in Sweden is dominated by Melfest songs are proof enough why the same writers return every year. The writers guarantee a hit song for the artist as well as for the show. There’s absolutely no reason to change anything because the Swedes love it an first and foremost Mello is an entertainment program for Swedish people.
And hello! Formulaic isn’t bad. Pretty much every international hit song follows the same model.
Some people really are fighting the tide with melfest. They need to fill the arenas and it wouldn't happen if you took another NF and put it in Sweden with the possible exception of Norway. And the funds aren't unlimited as people seem to think.
I just want to disagree with Gabe Milne's somewhat sour and verbal trashing of Melodifestivalen at the end. Where he talks about "quality of San Remo" and diversity of other national finals.. I find it rather curious and frankly as a Swede pisses me off some.. Sweden has always taken the competition seriously. And yes it could be more varied.. But how many weeks do you want the Melodifestival to go? Isn't 5+ weeks long enough already? And compared to other countries.. How many winners have their national selection produced in the least 5 decades compared to Melodifestivalen? None have produced as many. And constantly for the last years only once have we been excluded from the final.. So. Lets be honest here. Coming from someone from the Big 5..Where the song many times should probably have proven itself in a semi first but seeing as they've bought their way straight into the final (and taking up a spot from a more worthy song), or not even cared at all about what they send. Shouldn't be the one to talk.
Agreed. Gabe’s so stuck in the bubble that he forgets that Melfest is for Swedes, not eurofans.
There is an arrogance certainly.. And it is specifically directed to Sweden as it has been for the last 10 years or so. And the early symptoms are trash talking and then it quickly progresses and manifests itself in them and makes them ugly and not so interesting to watch on youtube anymore.. ... @@allmight2795

Lopeta nyt.. Dumheter. Swedish "need" to conform. You really NEED to sort out that Finnish jealousy... Everytime Sweden has won.. Since ABBA.. Sweden has been called innovative.. Now you say we are trying to please everyone else.. And that all we send out is the same crap.. This is a complete epitome of overexaggeration.. And since we are still leading musically over everyone else.. Statistically.. I would say it makes YOU look desperate to find excuses for needing to punish a country of people, simply for doing well... So you can live on smugly without looking like complete assholes..

You got one thing wrong right at the start by saying Sweden is not looking for a 2nd win in a row, Sweden is always looking to win Eurovision every year and pass Ireland to be the country with most wins, do we really need to send Loreen or Måns Z to win?

So, there is alot of complaints of the diversity but this is the final so the diverse songs are already out. If you wanna blame someone blame the ppl for not choosing diverse performances.
Also, unbelievable that Danny and Lisa Ajax went to the final..

So, Danny Saucedos arch is supposed to fall over, but the fact that it leaves you scratching your head wondering if it was on purpose or not is in itself a sign of bad staging.

My favorites this year didn't even get to the final. Scarlet and Lia Larsson. Scarlet because it was different and I love metal, and Lia Larsson because it was so infectios and easy to singalong with and she looked so happy.
We had more diffrent songs this year then ever in the heats, but sadly Sweden like pop more then anything, I would love to see Scarlet in the final, I agree it is to much pop, but it is the pepole that vote like that, nothing to do about it.

Jimmy Joker is aIso behind Austria’s entry. There have been swedish songwriters all over europe for many years, but you probably know that. Also some norwegians as well, i.e. The swiss entry this year has one of the same writer as «Queen of the kings» An idea for a video guys?

2024 is NOT a great year for Melodifestivalen. Maybe it's intentional so that we don't face the risk of hosting two years in a row. But I think the problem goes deeper than that. From being slightly comical to ridiculous, it's now completely outrageous that the same clique of writers dominates entries so overwhelmingly, year after year. The system feels corrupt. I'm voting for Cazzi Opeia, mostly because the song reminds me of PSB Go West (nostalgia).

Sorry, but why are the Swedes so offended by Gabe's comments 😭. He is mostly criticizing the lack of variety when it comes to songwriters. And lets be real here, almost all of the returnees came back with a song thats worse.

I'm with ESC Gabe on almost everything everything he said. I don't agree with the comments saying he was too rude. He gave some valid criticism here. It's not an uncommon opinion that the quality of songs has gone down, it's something that is being discussed across platforms. There's very little diversity of genres, new artists, and new songwriters, and no risk taking whatsoever. I don't think they even mentioned the absolute robbery of not having Scarlet in the final (or if they did I missed it).
We used to watch Melodifestivalen for many years with my friends. This year, we've finally given up. I've watched all the performances, but they are a blur of the same underwhelming, sterile pop. Medina's performance is the only one that makes me feel something, so I will be rooting for them.
The quality of songs going down is totally relative to what timeframe you’re in. Compared to 2018-2021, the past three editions have been immense upgrades song-quality wise. There is not at all a lack of variety in genres to begin with, but I can agree that one style of mainstream-pop is over-represented. Moreover, it is the case that most left-field songs don’t make it to the final but that is down to the Swedish people not a lack of variety within the competition itself. Personally, I find the final of this year to be really interesting, even though I would’ve liked Scarlet in it, with some acts like Maria Sur and M&M being among my favorites of ALL national finals. As for a lack of new artists, you have to remember that this is first and foremost an entertainment show for Swedish people, not a selection for Eurovision and certainly not some sort of audition. People watch it, at least partially, to see their favorite artists and icons.
Melodifestivalen actually has a lot of genres represented. Metal, Rock, Glamrock, Punk, Country, Jazz, BigBand, Pop, PopRock, EDM, Techno, Opera, Ballad, . But who goes to the final is up to THE SWEDISH people.. And a few jury members of the international jury (Who shouldn't be there in my opinion). There are plenty of NEW artists every year at Melodifestivalen.. No risk taking? ANYTHiNG we send is... HELD TO A DIFFERENT STANDARD and you admit so yourself... Send anything everyone thinks it is time to bash and critiqu.. What a crock.. Thank the "international jury" for stopping the times the people wanted to send daring or risky stuff.. YOHIO /
People of Sweden, of course, should have the last say on what the competition looks like. Melodifestivalen is different from many national finals, where the main purpose is just to choose the song for Eurovision. But since it is also a national final, with international spectators, people will have opinions about it.
I find it sad that even this year, most of the finalists have been participating several times - and I would argue many of them with weaker songs than before. You can almost tell which ones will qualify even before hearing the songs. Meanwhile, interesting new acts struggle to get to the final. Okay, there might be more genres in the heats, but even many tracks that are something other than straight-up pop tend to have an over-produced sound to them, which kind of makes them lose their soul a bit (again, in my opinion). And it's the pop songs that mostly fill up the final anyway.
More and more countries are sending unique songs with interesting mixes of genres, and experimentation with languages and styles to Eurovision. This year especially! I guess I would love to see something less predictable as the Swedish entry. Something in Swedish would be awesome. But that is just my personal opinion, Swedish people decide.
You are once again missing the point that it’s a show for the 4 million swedes watching to enjoy, not eurofans. Svts job is therefore to please those 4 million so that they keep watching, which is why mello is the way it is. You can watch your UMKs instead if that’s what you want 👍
@@wild_rose I don't know how much clearer I can make it for you. I literally just said 1) it's not just a national final for Eurovision 2) Swedish people decide what they want to see. I get that it's a Swedish competition for Swedish audience primarily, but it doesn't remove the fact that people follow it in other countries and the winner will (most likely) be performing at Eurovision. Therefore, people internationally will have opinions about it. Even opinions you might not agree with. This was my take on what I would like to see. You are also free to have and voice your opinions about other countries' entries and national competitions.
I can't stand Dotter anymore. I really, really like her when she competed with Bulletproof!! But then Little Tot (or Little Todd) and now this one ruined it completely for me. In this one she is like a bad actor that overexagerates everything. And why have a piano on stage when no one is playing on it? Only to crawl around on it and stand on it like she wishes she was like Loreen? And her defense when confronted by the similarities with Tattoo staging and clothing "I had the idea before I saw Tattoo".... *sigh* And the lyrics are so bad:

Toxic relationship much?? You might want to reconsider trying to write a love song and gather up some self-esteem and walk away from that guy instead of begging him stay with you despite your imperfections.
My votes will be on Medina and Cazzi Opeia! But I will be happy with Maria Sur and Jaqcline as well! I'm ok with M&M, Liamoo, Smash into Pieces or Danny winning!

Gabe spilled. Melfest is so incredibly mid bc the same 5 people just churn out pop songs for these "veterans" who cant seem to get their careers off the ground. This selection gets weaker and weaker every year bc the producers throw 2 vets with mediocre songs into each semi and let all the debuts fight for scraps.
