I'm glad to see you back, John, and I hope you don't feel shame as a result of being hacked. That can be a natural reaction, but it's really important to know that it's not your fault. Sure, you could've maybe done a couple things differently, but you made a reasonable effort to secure your account. I'll bet you'll be much more security conscious in future, and you'll be able to help others learn from your experience.

Sorry your hard work got hijacked. Hopefully this will inevitably make you stronger. My hardwood dealer also carries combi-core plywood. A lot of people seem to worry an unreasonable amount about moisture. Magnitude is key: any liquid water reaching any of your wood projects will do vastly more damage and much more rapidly than any amount of humidity, and projects stored indoors where air is conditioned to some degree year-round will only suffer if you live somewhere with big seasonal humidity swings AND you've failed to design for wood movement. The percentages you calculate are a great indicator of how much temporary wood movement matters.

    great analysis!
I live in tropics on the equator, and I've done my research as well, mostly on solid wood, as by choice I don;t use plywood or MDF.
what I've observed over the years, I don't even need to account for wood expansion or contraction, as the humidity and temperature are pretty much constant throughout the year. the temperature drops 5-10 degrees at night, but humidity doesn't.
and the 27 inches table made of 7 thick boards (1 3/4 inch) has not changed its dimensions throughout the year at all. well there were some deviations during the monsoon, constant rain for weeks, but less than 0.5%, and there were no cracks or warping. the boards were glued up with the strong PVA glue, with no dowells/dominos/biscuits, nothing but the glue. the glue up was aligned by 4 way pressure clamps, so no cauls either.
and to keep the top flat, i used the breadboards, glued with epoxy resin, with no wood movement allowance whatsoever. and the top was glued to the base using epoxy resin as well, poured into the mortices.
the table withstood over 3 years of the 95% humid tropical climate, without warping or cracking, and no noticeable wood movement. just to add more information, I used extremely hard wood, which even on the end grain looks slippery, looks like end grain is water tight, doesn't look like end grain at all.
so having learned that, I actually stopped being bothered about the wood movement at all. I built ~10 tables, and they all stayed flat, and crack free, and the legs stayed parallel to each other.
of course I understand that in Norther Hemisphere, the humidity jumps are drastic, and then the pieces of furniture might break or change geometry significantly, should they not be designed to allow for the wood movement.

I've been searching all your channels every couple days for a hack update. Definitely glad to see you back. Looking forward to more good content.
As for the swelling with humidity, that is a thing that's a pretty big deal in guitar building. Drier wood resonates better. How wood is stored and handled during and before construction, how it's finished after construction, poly vs nitro finishes, moisture content is monitored throughout the building process. Grain direction of the pieces used is a big deal. It affects movement as well. Tops of acoustic guitars are quarter sawn. Different species in the necks are different cuts. Quarter sawn mahogany is common in necks. As is flat and rift sawn maple. Quarter sawn maple is uncommon but also used on necks, supposedly more stable but in my opinion a little less attractive for a neck shaft. Ash is typically not used in necks but sometimes it's used in bodies for electric guitars.
Guitar setup is a game of thousandths of an inch for dedicated player. If your string height moves away from, or closer to, the fret tops by say .010", that's very noticable to the player. A 20 inch piece of wood, the neck, can swell enough to throw that out and back as humidity rises and falls throughout the year. My personal guitars get small adjustments about every 6 months to keep them where I want them. With the main season changes. Just small tweaks. And that's not from like a preventative maintenance type of thing. It's like an... I pick it up and it suddenly plays just a little off type of thing. Usually with the season changes and relative humidity changes. And they all are stored in one location mainly other than trips to places to play. They move around some even though I don't touch the adjustments. And some guitars are more susceptible than others. Likely due to finish variations. Some guitars have finished maple necks. Others have unfinished (or simply oiled) Rosewood, Pau Ferro, or ebony fingerboards are common. As well as some modern day rosewood substitutes.
Professional musicians move around a lot, often play outdoor shows, then indoor shows, back to outdoor shows. If a guitar is in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada for 2 or 3 weeks during summer, then it's taken to Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas for the next 3 weeks, there is no doubt it will need adjustments to feel the exact same to the player.
Solid wood definitely moves. It's almost like the wood is still alive. I doubt that MDF sample will ever shrink back though haha
Anyway.... Glad to see you back and I'm glad this situation had a favourable outcome for you.

Hey John. Glad to hear you have your channel back. This video gives us good insight on the suitability of materials in more extreme humidity situations. Here in South Florida, in a non- air conditioned shop, the humidity ranges from 40% in winter to as much as 85% on some summer mornings. based on your experience, can I use MDF for work table surfaces and jigs?
I can get MR MDF, but with either product, i would want a protective finish on top to protect against scratches, etc. What would you recommend?

It would be interesting to compare the results with finished pieces. So a piece of particle board and edge banding on all sides should not absorbe as much. Same for the other pieces with poly, lacquer or oil
