@@DeimosPC I have a MK6 GTI that I purchased with 78,000 miles two years ago and it's never had a check engine light. It now has 107,000 miles. I drive very aggressively and it's been extremely reliable requiring NO unscheduled maintenance. Not even a fuse or bulb. Just oil/fluid changes, tires, spark plugs (for APR tune) and brakes. Fully stock besides an APR tune with 260 hp, 317 lbs/ft of torque. I had concerns about VW reliability when I bought it but it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. For perspective I've owned an '87 Corolla, '88 Honda Accord, e30, e28 and e36 BMW's, Subaru Forester XT with JDM STI VF30 turbo (ultimate sleeper 0-60 in 5.0 sec), Volvo 850 Turbo wagon, 240 DL wagon (slow AF), Ford Taurus SHO (crap), R56 MINI Cooper S and now the '10 VW GTI. I think VW/Audi solved their reliability problems after 2008 or so.

@@bryanviper there are a couple of 500hp kits for the mk7 platform. They're very tunable and make great power
Scott Gray Evo is better though, 500whp on a stock motor and can get into the thousands with a build one
@@cheetahgaming3642 You can get 1000 from a built Golf R too, theres alot of 800hp cars on youtube. Look it up, not taking anything away from the EVO though they are truly amazing. I mean newer cars are just better to live with than older ones, they are easier to drive, comfortable and aren't too loud unless you want them to be.

Peylix coming from a RS owner, a R would destroy. Remapped with bolt on minus a hybrid/big turbo RS has about 420bph where the golf R is like 450-460. Then you can slap a turbo on the R and 500bhp where the RS would pop its engine

Oh.. I know all about the MK7 R's capabilities.
APR's Stage 3+ kit puts damn near 500 down to the wheels. The Gen 3 EA888 TSI is easily the best engine VW has built in a LONG ass time.
But I'm also a fan of the Focus RS. And I know you can build those up quite a bit too. Though a lot more has to be done to hand said power as the RS has a weaker head and block vs VW's.
It still would be amazing to see.
Plus, I doubt Moog would build the R to where you and I are talking. Granted, you can still get the R up there with just an intake, DP, tune. Which would prob be his route (2+).
Please keep the golf please ! Remap, bigger turbo, exhaust and coilovers and you'll have a beast !

That was so cool guys! I had a golf 1.9tdi 5 serie for 6 years when I was 25, I loved it so much and got so many girls with it in Italy :) nearly 1000 km with one tank of diesel but it was slow as... it was impressive to see how fast this 7th serie is! Awesome!

That's a feature not a bug, the car is telling you to check the engine just so you can see how mad it looks.

@@mightycarmods It's probably just the EGR hose on the back of the intake manifold on the passenger side. just put your hand down and you will feel it there, common evo issue, pops off on higher boost/thrashing. They arent even cable tied on...

Wolfsburg is the place in Germany, where VW / Volkswagen produces their cars. So see it as a kinda special edition, maybe no equivalent to the “Nürburgring Edition“, but you get the idea. Greez from Germany.

Excellent end to this series! New challenge: Golf R vs Focus RS both @ 400hp and new vinyl wrap or spray dip. 1/2 points for art, 1/2 for performance.

The suspension setup is hurting the evo... too low and the rake is off. Raise the car and corner balance it... I'm sure it will make a big difference.

Not really MCM style but APR Motorsports does full, off the shelf, built ons and tunes that make VWs extremely fun. I used to drive a MK6 GTI and upped it to a APR Stage II+ with a bunch of other supporting mods. It was so much fun, even being fwd.

The golf is tunable, but not that reliable when you tune it. 400hp is max for a daily driven one
@@gumpertapollo97 You don't want a lot of hp in a golf for the track it's basically just trading spool for top end. 400hp is plenty for most people, I've got a mk5 R thats probably making 290 crank with a tune and bolt ons.

Moog I totally agree that the Evo9 is the best of the bunch. It doesn't make sense that he got an evo after being a big Subaru guy but Marty does seem to love it! He said he will never crush it!

This video is great!!!! Please do more with the Golf R!! She needs stage 2 tune from Stratified (through the COBB AP) a downpipe, APR Intake, and the breaks from the R8, after those mods she'll be one of the best cars you'll ever own. Trust me. I have the MK6. And don't forget the DSG tune. I recommend the one from Integrated Engineering because it has the most options when it comes to setting up launch control.

EVO doesnt seem like its running anywhere near 280kw, it would've literally ran rings around the golf, im thinking evo has a shit tune,if any.. hence engine light, probably 220kwish

Electric Blue is by far the best Evo color ever made hands downs. Beautiful car and excellent choice on an Evo. We love building these car here in the states. We personally have an 800 and a 1000whp evo ourselves. Can't wait to see how far you take your Evo 9!

EVO 9 FTW. Have quite a few friends with Golf Rs and they can't hold a candle to my Evo 8.
In person Silver is my favorite but Electric Blue is a close second followed by Blue Bayou (pronounced Blew By-you here in the states) just because Mitsu actually named it that.
Can't argue with Apex sliver looking good too. We have an 03 Evo 8 thats Apex Silver and an 05 Apex Silver Evo 8 that we will be turning into a full drag car.
I personally own a silver Evo 8 and have loved it ever since I bought it, currently it's 900+hp, love these cars!n

MrSlowestD16 where I live all the young people have golfs, I prefer the rawness and mechanicalness of the evo, the golf is the more modern car here so the technology is impressive especially with the modern gearboxes

My nephew has a golf and he decided it would be a good idea to take me for a little spin on Christmas day this past year, he said, look uncle it has launch control... I nearly shat myself. I really wasn't expecting it to be that quick, the golf R is a really pleasant surprise.

802 Garage Not in BMW's with the M54 engine, they burn up 0W-40 rapidly, but for some reason do not burn 5W-30

I used to have mk7 gti with full bolt ons and Golf R is38 turbo. That car was really quick. Just a tune and DP for that R will be night and day difference.

VRS in the UK built a 600bhp meth injected R with stock internals and a larger turbo. The mqb platform is pretty cool

@@rjjii1980 Never seen a golf R do 10s with 400hp. I just watched a 2017 Golf R with 600hp run a 10.4 with a hell of a lot of work done. Evos are making 400whp with bolt ons. And can hit high 10s no problem.

Nah. They modify older, cooler, cars. The 2.0 TSI is actually less capable than the 2.0 16v from the MK2s.

I own this Golf R Wolfsburg edition in Blue. Have just placed an APR Stage1 tune on it and there isn't much out there that takes it on the local roads, apart from a new RS3. Tuning Golf Rs give you a mini GTR feel on local streets. A great car for the money
Great driving Moog & Marty. Obviously I love vw because I'm in Europe but a lot of my very close mates have JDM cars (silvias, 180's) and we have a lot of fun and a lot of track days with living 15mins away from one of the best tracks in the UK. Been following your show for years and just wanted to say thanks for all the time you put into teaching and being taught. My mate made the first Honda mini in the UK after watching your show legitimately aswell the first. Anyone living in the UK would have seen it at track days or summer action fest because he does the rounds. ✌️ ✌️
What track are you by? I want to visit the UK for all the tracks I see in btcc. And Silverstone. So many of them look amazing.

In the U.K. this is so strange to hear them talk about the golf like this.

while a Golf R would not be as common in Aus as they are in the UK, they are still a popular car - would probably see one every day too. MCM don't feature a lot of euro cars so they are just excited about it I guess?

Comparing the ages of the car, evo is a fken beast of its time. I would choose it anyday.
Helps the fact this EVO is tuned. If it was a stock EVO 9 then it would've been thrashed. But yes it held up rather well.

Wolfsburg edition is just a car that was made in Wolfsburg, they offered some extras like badges and other small details you can't get on the other Golfs.

Left foot braking on most stock vw's is disabled. It usually cuts throttle when you attempt it. Not sure about the golf r though.
Honestly it looked like Moog had the better lines in the corners. You guys should switch cars and race again!

I gotta admit, It's nice to see you guys finally deal with more modern/iconic cars. Always loved the content but hated seeing the oldies/hoopties in the early days.
Though it did make sense since some of them held sentimental value for your generation.
Even as a huge VW fan I was shocked at how well it kept up with the modded Evo, testament to how potent the Golf R is out of the box. The Golf's EA888 Gen3 2.0T can make some serious power, Moog is gonna have a blast with it!

Princess Solace but FF and FWD are roughly the same things, aren’t they? FF is just a bit more specific with it saying front engine, front wheel drive and the latter is just front wheel drive, with the engine that could probably be anywhere but most likely still in the front

Most JDM cars don't use obd2 though, they use JOBD, which most obd scanners can't read

If only you guys could see the winter testing that the Golf R goes through, pretty rad. Sadly though, they could have squeezed more power out of it to make it faster, but I guess it's all due to the living fact that there's an RS-3 that the R isn't supposed to compete with.

@marty you could have had him at 5:35 if you followed his line through the corner and got really close to his bumper before trying to pass. I think you were too focused on overpowering him ON the straight, but the straight starts in the exit of the corner. you took a sharper turn and couldn't carry as much speed as moog could have, so you were slower on the acceleration than you would have been. my uncle calls it an "eager exit" lol
Could be right, also got misfiring issues that make it slow... we'll sort it out!
