@@Laroling I think it's because the term was derived from Bimbo, but Bimbo is itself a pretty sexist term. As it generally just means "A very dumb, very pretty girl". "Herbo" is trying to say the modernized version of that... so it's a woman who is tough, kinda dumb, attractive, but ultimately very kind and likable. Where as "bimbo" just a slightly less rude way of calling a woman dumb, and not really a word any woman is too keen to reclaim. lol

We try to keep them in check but they escape our yard from time to time. And I will confirm, Thor has strong himbo energy, especially in Ragnorok. They did him dirty in Endgame, you can't change my mind. Also, what show is the bottom right example in 10:27? I know where every other character that is from except that one and its bugging me. But I have a hard time finding ways to lighten the mood and the characters. Do you have any tips for writing thembos? I wanna be able to incorporate those traits into a few of my characters but I honestly don't know how.

    • @pLanetstarBerry
      @pLanetstarBerry Před 3 lety +32

      @@goblinleigh6128 some tips
      1) allow them to be wrong about stuff. But if you want to keep it lighthearted do it in like, the dumbest, lowest of stakes kind of way. They get a fact everyone knows about wrong, accidentally makes a malaphor, or says one word when they really mean to say another that just sounds REALLY close to what they actually said. Just keep in mind that their ignorance isn't supposed to be malicious. Think the "he's confused, but he's got the spirit" meme.
      2) As well as the dumb energy, thembos have endearing qualities. Loyalty, kindness, empathy, stuff like that. The himbo from my project finds out the protagonist is gay and turns out to be very tolerant of protag's identity, and even tries setting the protag up with his crush. He's very "I don't completely understand it, but I don't have to to accept you" about it.
      3) they don't have to be a complete dumbass at everything to be acceptable as a thembo. People in real life have their knowledge gaps, and its more true the more they specialize. My spouse works in library science- he's a very smart person and will sort and categorize and read up on any subject that strikes his fancy. That being said, until last week he was convinced cuckoo birds were fictional animals and I had to be the one to tell him otherwise.
I'll come and add more tips if I think of any, but that's all I got so far.

She's definitely very far from booksmart, but she makes all the right decisions in important situations and doesn't let negative stuff get her down - she either reassesses or tries again and is very strong in that respect. She is someone who is simply not afraid of learning experiences and is really using them. My explanation feels very jumbled, but I really think she's a very positive character.

If anything, companies tend to try to fit our pre-existing values instead of the other way around. Products, are often the results of tens of thousands of people working together; Investors, animators, writers, producers, distributors, all having a bit of a say in the process. Avatar TLA was really ahead of its time when it came to pushing healthy male representation and fighting toxic masculinity. If you think about it, Ozai is kinda the embodiment of toxic masculinity, being completely unable to show weakness or emotion in any respect. Meanwhile, the other characters serve as antidotes to this kind of behavior. Sokka's arc is pretty directly about learning how to show weakness, respect others, and finding his own strengths rather than trying to be the embodiment of the strong male authority figure he's expected to be. Zuko's arc is about accepting and letting out his emotions in a healthy manner, with Iroh being there to guide him. Aang's strengths lie from his convictions and desire to help everyone, his emotions and pacifism is what ends up saving the world. When it came to gender representation, this show was really spot on, and did so much right, that a lot of other shows really didn't catch up to for a long time.

I think that's what they were trying to convey in the video. Himbos/thembos are often perceived as "not bright" simply because of their silly energy, but once one gets to know them better they learn they are much more intelligent then what they let on. That's the case with Mikey, he seems "not bright" because he's a goof but as the show progresses we see his talents and capabilities. Honestly I'm also glad this trope is getting much more positive and healthy because growing up I was often made fun of for being too nice and too silly and I was often underestimated because of that. Thankfully I tried real hard not to let it get to me and I have certainly grown and proven my wit lol 😆. I'd like to see a vid about small himbos/thembos because those that are small in stature may get treated differently. At least that's how I felt since I was always so small, and I felt it added more to the underestimation.

It teaches them that you *can* marry those traditional 'manly man' ideals of physical fitness, stoicism, honor and the ability to take charge to more modern concepts of self-care and healthy social relationships and that both can be valued in society at the same time which I think is super important for boys growing up in an age where their more traditional role models have been thoroughly deconstructed in the public eye.

I know that's not the point and that it's mostly kids media, however, it's a direct counterpoint to the old messaging of (often also kid's) media where both gross 'nice guys' and gross 'bad boys' were heroes for manipulating girls, or the object they call girl, into liking them.
I think that's important when it comes to trying to make a direct 180 turn on things - using the measurement of the old (ability to get girls) to contradict the old.
Like yes, drinking respect women juice is not specifically to get women, but treating women as people needs to be modeled as something that allows women to feel safe with you.

Pretty much the connotations, yeah. The word could probably be reclaimed but herbo is just what I’ve heard tossed around!

Bimbo is being reclaimed but in a very different way as bimbo is a heavily sexualized stereotype and is strongly connected to reclaiming the pink and fluffy type of femininity

Thor (and I mean the old Norse god here not the marvel character) was *ABSOLUTELY* the original Himbo, and not to sound pretentious but like I love how ancient Archetypes like this can travel through the generations like that lol, n tbh I think the more modern version of the Himbo trope is a lot closer to the Archetype of Thor (again, old god) than a lot of the more old-school Himbos (atleast within my, admittedly brief personal experience/UPG with him; I mostly work w Loki and Óðinn lol)

I personally think that the term Himbo has transcended the pronoun placement of "Him" and become its own word. I think its the same thing as Bro, Dude, Man, in the way that as a nonbinary person i dont feel misgendered when its used in reference to me. That wont be the same for everyone, but thats just my take.

I feel like Joey from Friends is a good himbo. He may be dumb but he was Always nice to everyone (even if he was a “ladies man”). He was the strongest of all the three guys. And he, to my memory, didn’t treat women disrespectfully. He was a good person

I like your interpretation but I think there is another way of looking at it which is less positive in nature: that having feminine traits is only acceptable if you can compensate by having an abundance of other masculine traits. For example, the big strong jock who doesn't think too hard is pretty much the apex of the masculine stereotype. So it almost seems transactional: "okay fine you can have a male character who is kind hearted and empathetic, but only if you make them as buff as a tank in exchange". After all, you can't have a positive male role model not exude pure masculine energy (with a few exceptions like Bow and... no actually I can't think of any other examples off the top of my head).
Now, these two ideas aren't totally mutually exclusive, most tropes can and do have both positive and negative effects, but that's just how I look at it as a less traditionally masculine man myself.

You know what I want. I want Bimbo to be reclaimed so we can have the ultimate himbo/bimbo power couple. A wholesome couple who are amazed and infatuated by the brilliants of each other. they both dumb as rocks but it doesn’t matter because they cute and nothing can stop them.
Edit: never mind, I just learned the word herbo and I fucking love it! I still want that ship tho.

The only thing I find myself disagreeing with in this video, is calling He-Man an "oldtype" Himbo.
I'm fairly certain, that the writers of He-Man specifically tried to appeal with the positive sides of masculinity, like chivalry.
I have however noticed, that society often influences people with exaggerations of the current perception of masculinity.
Until recently, little boys were crushed by the duties and stereotypes attached to masculinity,
while now, some people are so eager to rid the world of toxic masculinity, that they just lump it together with positive masculinity.
There are, for instance, extremely woke people, who'll get offended at something as simple as someone holding a door for them.
Overall I'd say that He-Man is the perfect role model, as he not only has the strength to protect what he holds dear,
but also has a lot of compassion and chivalry and doesn't shy away from asking for help from his many friend and companions.
In fact Shadiversity recently made a video on how He-Man and Superheroes in general shaped him growing up and as a father,
where he also argues that the strength displayed by fictional role models is usually intended to help people grow, not hinder them.
Thereby I'd agree that Himbos are probably the most blatant and obvious, and therefor least misunderstandable way of conveying that.

I just wanna say 'chivalry' has also been used to infantilise and take agency away from women. It can be used to perpetuate an idea that women are weaker and it's mens duties to protect them, when really we should all be protecting each other
Really chivalry and basic kindness like holding the door open for someone should be practiced by all people, not just men. And also some people may not want the door to be held for them, and they're valid too
