@@terraneaux Perhaps--if taken out of its fictional context.
In OR out of fiction, the greatest appeal of himbos is their emotional sensitivity and the duality of having a man who is both strong but non-threatening to women - something that is rare in the experience of many women.
They can vicariously enjoy not feeling unsafe around a man who has the ability (if not the intent) to overpower them -- which, in real life, many women often have to weigh the risks of when in the presence of most men.

I knew a guy once who came close to the himbo archetype. This was years ago, back in the 90s, when I was (mea culpa) trying to be a good Catholic and attending a conservative Catholic college. There was a guy in my dorm who was a former football player. He was so good he had aspired to go pro, but couldn't because of an injury. In this small school with mostly very non-athletic guys, he really stood out. During touch football games, it was ridiculous. No one could touch him -- ever -- and he made perfect passes every single time. It was wild. He was a short, muscular white guy with a little mustache and the start of a receding hairline. He was quiet, but friendly and completely self-confident. He knew who he was and had nothing to prove. This is a VERY conservative college, so you generally assume that most of the students are either Republicans, or crazy far-right extremists (back then, those were not completely synonymous). This guy looked like a classic Republican. He was Catholic, and indeed he was a charismatic -- he spoke in tongues, like most students at this school.
But he wasn't a conservative -- not at all. He spoke openly of his support for women's equality and abortion rights -- a true heresy. He supported gay equality. He supported black civil rights -- he was a vocal fan of Jesse Jackson, and I think he said he had worked on Jackson's campaign for president.
I didn't know what to make of him, but I was fascinated. I had my own inner conflicts, so I didn't want to judge him, but I also couldn't make sense of him. I don't think anyone else knew what to think, either. Other students just did not talk that way; it wasn't done. But he didn't give a shit, and he acted like it was perfectly normal to be who he was. So to all the trad Caths at this school, he couldn't be touched.
I never forgot him, and I often wonder what happened to him. I've long suspected he might be queer, but maybe that's just my own queer fantasy.
Anyhow, great video and I'm now a subscriber.
Edit: just to clarify, I'm not saying his political views were the greatest thing ever. But it was obvious that he cared about people, and for him, that meant everyone should be treated well, which translated into the Rainbow Coalition. His political views were just a transparent reflection of his own personality. I couldn't help admiring him for it.

For background I am AMAB and genderfluid. I also have self esteem issues stemming from chronic anxiety and gender dysphoria. And the reason I bring all this up is because my friends have a nickname for me: "thembo" Basically meaning I'm a Nonbinary himbo. The definition of the himbo given at the beginning as a conventionally attractive guy who is a little dense yet kind and loyal was very affirming for me. I don't see myself as attractive or extraordinarily kind, but the fact that my friends call me a thembo tells me that they do. That feels nice.

Great video, subscribed! From my own femme perspective, the big strong jock character can be difficult to like because he poses a threat to the safety of the physically weaker characters I typically identify with. When the creator himbofies that character, it's almost like a shorthand for "hey, this guy is too sensitive and simple-minded to intentionally hurt someone." He turns from a threat to a protector, both of which are traditionally masculine roles on either end of the safety spectrum. So even with the hypermasculinity that often doesn't appeal to my queer femme tastes, I can't help but love these characters. I want to be friends with the guy who can cry with me *and* can challenge toxic masculinity (theoretically challenging the ideals and literally/physically challenging the men who cause harm).

The way Goku collects people, especially former enemies, is the best example of his kind and empathetic nature. He gives second chances, doesn't hold grudges, and once you're a part of the team he trusts you implicitly. Fighting doesn't equate with hatred for him. He either fights for the love of the challenge, or the utility of saving the world/his lived ones. His only toxic trait is selfishness. He is supremely selfish and occasionally short sited. He sometimes puts his love of the fight over his family's emotional needs, and sometimes causes world ending threats because he's looking for a challenge. But not on purpose, it's part of his simple nature.

I think one the most appealing aspects of himbos, specifically in the case of women who like men, is the implied harmlessness. It is not uncommon for a woman to fear men, due to trauma or otherwise, but a man is less likely to think of hurting you if he doesn't even have too much of an ability to think in general. It hits that sweet spot of big/strong for purposes of protection or even just a nice comfy hug, but with less probability of backfiring. (just a theory)

For me Himbo-ism was a useful mask to learn humility and actually strengthen my resilience to self-esteem issues. In middle school being smart was part of my identity, so getting to high school and learning I'd been a big fish in a small pond was rough at first. Friends who were smarter than me, who might catch me doing something dumb or unwise, would really affect my self image of being competent and worth something. Leaning into being the "dumb, athletic friend" among a group of nerds let me practice being wrong about things and not letting it shatter my ego. (Ironically, I wasn't even that strong compared to the actual athletes, I just looked like a Hercules compared to the band geeks I fell in with.)

I've never really fit into all the categories, but I've definitely tried to lean into the ones I have to justify the ones I don't. This helped me understand my teenage years a lot more

Such a delightful vid, obsessed with the flower mic and the hard subs! I think the beauty of a himbo is they don't need or want a full dissertation on why something is important to you for it to matter to them. Those thick thighs are going to carry that big heart and empty head over to help.

So you want someone who blindly follows your orders
This confirms a suspicion I've had around people who like himbos/bimbos, they want someone who will willfully follow them and not question them all while looking nice and fitting their gender role. I knew there was a reason why 'himbos' rubbed me the wrong way

I think the key of this himbo archetype video is the importance of high self-esteem on the development of a truly own identity, not through competition, but through the things that really affects you (and yes, your feelings are included). The outcome of that process will not be necessarily a himbo, because WE ARE DIFFERENT, but it will definitely be a healthier way of being and expressing our inner world.

great video! one character i think of that really reminds me of a himbo is tenchi from tenchi universe (specifically). he doesn’t change much at all through out every reiteration of the show, the girls around him do though. i’ve never seen a harem anime like that and am fully uninterested in them. but tenchi universe (specifically) was different, only two out of like 6 girls for real wanted to date him, the other girls he simply provided a place to live, selfless friendship, and protection. and they would always have their own thing going on, they did not revolve around tenchi. whenever sasami is in trouble tenchi runs to her as if she was his own little sister. when his friends are in trouble he worries and when he interacts with everyone it’s kind and hands-off. which you can’t say the same for his grandpa and his father, who have more perverted personalities. when his friends have conflict among each other he doesn’t stick his nose in, to avoid choosing a side and hurting one or the other’s feelings. tenchi’s mom died when he was young, and there’s a couple moments in the series and quite a few in the movies where tenchi demonstrates his ability to empathize and be emotional when he talks about his mom. i’ve yet to see such a himbo main character like tenchi again. not in the same way. no one else has that fugly little rat tail like him. anakin skywalker lookalike.

I think an aspect of the trope missing from this video, that is worth exploring is the intersection of the himbo's dumbness and the manosphere's rejection of intellectualism.
I don't know a lot about that aspect, so I don't really have an opinion. Just some food for thought.

  • @silversam
    @silversam Před rokem +2

Great video. Love that you brought Sokka to this; despite being very not the "tank" of Team Avatar (that's obv Toph), I get that big dumb lovable himbo energy there, along with the growth and openness 😊
Love the conversations in this 😃
(skip this part if the Worf question was rhetorical haha)
Based on what I know of the character, I'd put Riker in the himbo category before Worf. Either is a flawed choice for it. Riker has the capacity for fun, and even though he's capable of abstract thought is almost never the *smartest* boy in the room. He's roguish with a genuine kindness. Meanwhile Worf is deadass serious all the time, reflexively puts his own feelings ahead of everyone around him, and even briefly joined a terrorist action with a Jordan Peterson cult because he had a fight with his spouse. Very not-himbo vibes.
Hell, Jadzia Dax is more of a himbo than Worf OR Riker, despite also being a woman. She still has much of the personality of her previous life as a hard-partying, thrill-seeking dude who ran with a crew of Klingons, and I get the impression that she was def the himbo in that crowd.
Or maybe Rom is the real Star Trek himbo after all 🤷
I dunno if any of this matters or makes sense tho 😆
