  • This is a demonstration between the sounds of two very known ribbon microphones: sE Electronics Voodoo VR1 and Royer Labs R-121. If you have a headphone, the differences will become more evident.
    Gear used:
    - Fender Stratocaster Custom Shop 1960 Reissue Matching Headstock.
    - Head Mesa Boogie LoneStar + Cab Mesa Boogie with 2x12" Black Shadow speakers.
    - Pedal Fulltone OCD.
    - Pedal JHS Bonsai.

Great comparison. They're similar, but the flatter response of the VR1 is detectable. I'd probably still get a R-121 if money were not a consideration - the R-121/SM57 combo is hard to beat. Thanks.

Wow, based on that comparison the sE VR1 is the closest sounding ribbon mic to the Royer R-121 I've heard (vs AEA, Coles, Mesanovic). It would be interesting to hear the VR1 and the R-121 compared on different instruments like brass, acoustic guitar and piano or drums etc to see how they behave on those different sound sources, but based on this comparison I'd totally be comfortable purchasing a VR1 in place of the R-121 to stretch budget out across more microphones. The R-121 is one of my personal favorite mics, but for the price, the VR1- with a touch of EQ - could sound basically like a twin on electric guitar at the amp volume settings and pedal tones you were using. Thanks for the comparison!

The VR1 sounds more detailed and neutral. Quite a pleasant surprise when you consider the difference in their price.

honestly not that striking of a difference for the extra fucking thousand dollars it takes to get a 121 wtf

Especially when that subtle of a difference can be made identical to the 121 with a 10-second EQ adjustment.
