My husband died 10 weeks ago today, this was one of our favorite songs, We did dance on the shore, We loved on the shore, We sailed past Many shores, We lived & love the sea. I will always love you Roger. It has now been just short of FOUR years. The memories such as this are what has carried me through all the sleepless night and the tear filled days. I wouldn't change a thing. He was the best husband I ever could have had. I love you and will join you some day. Thank you for your love. Roger you are my one and only.
Ten week,s ten days, ten years, the pain and hurt will always be there but your memories will always pull you thru, though hard I know it will always let you go back to that wondeerful time with your Roger, with these soothing songs. God Bless/
I am so sorry to hear about your husband. And what a lovely life you must have had, such beautiful memories. Keep those thoughts with you every day. Your husband would be so enchanted to know that this music reminds you of him.
Lost my wife of 40 years 6 months ago. Wedding anniversary is Christmas Eve. Hard times coming. I pray for you. The hole in your heart will never heal. God Bless You
You and I are the same age, and the minute I heard this familiar music I immediately thought of my late mother too. It must bring back memories of how calming and loving they could be with their little ones.
I also feel this sad and happy with this most beautiful tune. I was born in 64 and this was played at my Mother's funeral. So much emotion in the tune and the way it in was played ❤😢😊
My mom loved this tune she passed in april 2014. I was born in the late 50's an army brat with eight siblings. My son and i danced to this at his wedding. My daughter in law danced with her father. Makes me cry and feel joy at the same time.
Same here. I’m immediately taken back to my childhood home, riding my bike with my friends in the Summer, in my hometown. There were other instrumentals in the 60’s that were as memorable.
I came to the UK from the USA 21 years ago to ultimately marry a gorgeous Englishman, retired from the RAOC, so a veteran. We were madly in love until the day he passed away, 2 1/2 years ago. We were 'Strangers on the Shore,' and this was our song. Today would have been our 21st wedding anniversary. And I'm still loving my new homeland.
I was born in 1960 and my mum said every time this song came on the radio I would sob and cry my eyes out, growing up I absolutely love it and fills my heart with so much joy and sorrow of what use to be I have so many wonderful memories and this song is a major part of my life.
I loved reading your comment regarding this wonderful memorable song. My mom and dad liked it too. This song calms me down; I never get tired of listening to it.
One summer vacation my coal miner Dad took the family on a trip to DC. One evening we boarded a ship that took us to an amusement park via the Potomac River. On the ship was a live band that played like Big Band music. My younger sister and I knew that Stranger on the Shore was Mom's favorite so we went up the a man in the band and asked if they would play it. They did a great job. Mom was surprised and loved it. A memory of a summer evening in the early sixties.

Happy ,happy days when the world was at a slower pace ! This brings back memories of mum cooking the Sunday roast , and my dad just hanging loose in 'his' garden ..., tending the flowers he loved so much. And 'Stranger on the shore' was always on the record player. Treasured memories !! Thank you for the music.
My dad just passed away yesterday. He played the clarinet and was a fan of this great artist. I just had to play this video because we shared musical moments together during his last months in hospice.RIP dad.
I promised my grandpa I would play this for him on saxophone about 12 years ago. He died 10 years ago never hearing me play it, so I played it at as wake. This piece will never stop getting to me.
When my grandson wanted to join the high school band I bought him a tenor sax and the reason was I wanted to hear him learn and become great on it but alas his band teacher found someone better on a sax and he had to take up trombone.

I asked him for a 'message' once in my utter grief and he left me one. Try it Linda, your Dad IS out there somewhere listening to you and still loving you.
I was exploring new genres of music and found this on the list of Billboard magazine's Top Hot 100 songs of 1962. What a divine piece of music history, makes You feel nostalgia for something you never experienced.
Had this at my mum and my dads funeral, they used to waltz around the lounge to this. Makes me cry everytime, sweet memories. I hope they are waltzing in heaven. 😘
This was my mom and dad's wedding song when they got married in '69. Mom passed away 10 years ago, but this song brings me some calm when I need it and I can't call my dad and stepmom because it's late.
I,m 59 now and scottish ! when i was wee I saved like hell used to collect old newspapers from houses to take to chip shops to try to raise money and this was what i spent it on a 45 viynl record acker bilk for my mum as she loved it
This one is beautiful, so peaceful and sweet sounding. Acker Bilk was such a good clarinet player really. And so 57 years after it was released, it is still a good melody to hear and enjoy.
I'm significantly deaf, more in the higher register. Although I love listening to all types of music I never dreamed of learning to play an instrument in my life. I heard this piece about 2months ago, and was so taken by it that I'm looking for a clarinet this week( 2nd hand! Obv😊) Wish me luck❣
I know that feeling...I was not alive when this song came out ( 1962?) but I find myself longing for my Father and Grandmother. Not to worry because someday we will be reunited on that shore. May God Bless You
I must say Stranger on the Shore is the greatest music EVER for the clarinet. Plus the string arrangements and recording quality are unsurpassable! As a musician myself been listening to this masterpiece for 60 some years and is spellbinding, especially on 45 rpm record. Mesmerizing every time.
Nicholas, another lifetime musician here. Totally agree with you. This recording is probably one of the best ever. Are you familiar with Mantovani and his orchestra? If not, I highly recommend. Also, ever heard a Wersi Scala played? I love to hear them played by someone really talented, and there are some good recordings on CZcams.
I agree, it was my parents wedding song in1955. Th we y had their reception at the Embassy Ballroom in Perth,Western Australia. Magnificent times. Never happen again.
This song has a beautiful memory for me. I had a raging crush on a boy named Paul. He was a new student and the minute I saw him I was "in love". We were 8th graders so it was puppy love. This song was playing at an 8th grade dance and Paul walked straight to me and asked me to dance. I'm 74 and still cherish that memory. Sometimes one single moment in time can become a moment to remember.
This song reminds me of warm summer days, watching the slowly shifting shadow patterns of overhead branches as they swayed in the breeze and my mother's laugh.
My daddy die when i was 7... i didn't know him much due to him and mother parting...i only have 3 memories ...his ashes were put in the sea and i fell in love with this song at the age of 8 and when I hear it ..i know he is close . Once I was sad ..away from home and wanted so bad to hear it ...i turn on the radio and the dj said" this something I dont offen play but just feel like playing tonight !! " i am 45 now and this song is were i can close my eyes and feel my daddys arms around me .
Katie Burgess That is one of the most touching comments I have ever read on you tube thanks you .I have played this song thousands of times on my trumpet it has and never will loss its special place in my life RIP Mr Acker Bilk thanks mate
Hello Your comment has bought a tear to my eye, I'm so sorry you lost your father at such a young age. I have a daughter who's 10 and she means the world to me. God bless you Take care
Katie Burgess I don't believe in miracles and such things, but every now and then the universe delivers up something that sure sounds or feels like one. I think a lot of us know how that made you feel! :-)
I'm 28 and love this kind of music. The classics are far superior to what is produced today. I don't understand how anyone could dislike this. It's simply gorgeous and timeless.
I was 5 when this came out and remember it perfectly well with black and white footage of a beach in Britain. it reminds me of my childhood in the UK. I was remembering it today which is why I looked it up. Such a beautiful and unforgettable melody.
When I was a lot younger I thought the clarinet was a rather screechy instrument then I heard Acker Bilk play this and it turns out that in his hands it is one of the most beautiful sounds of all, truly one of the greatest talents he is greatly missed.
One of those tunes that immediately take you back to better, more youthful times. Times that were happier, yet evoking them brings a certain sadness.....

When this was No 1 in the UK in the late Summer of ' 61, I, aged 12 , was on holiday with my parents in SW Scotland, and walked 6 miles on my own into the village of Dalbeattie to a tiny record shop called ' Percy Bros. ' , and bought this Columbia single for 6 / 4d !.Funny how music, especially this good, takes you back to a moment in time so long ago, plenty of happy memories of people no longer around, and I still have that record !.
Acker is from Somerset a small village near Radstock he was a real local and good shit, he gate crashed my farewell party to Canada and played along with the Avon city Jazz Band from Bristol...we were all trad jazz guys.. cheers
When I was growing up my father used to listen to a radio show that had this song as the signature tune at the start. Always loved it. He passed away 3 months ago. He introduced to music and I miss him.

Agreed! Much of today's music is filled with noise and anger. It seems that when we witness true musicians like this (Kenny G) they stand out above the rest.
there are negative people whose goal it is to show THUMBS DOWN ON EVERY POST! they love seeing people get upset with them and chew them out. sick people.
This was one of my Dad’s favorites. He even had the album in his collection. I just heard it in a random video, and tried to tell my grand daughter about it, and surprised my self by choking up.
When our family owned a loung and italian restaraunt in the early sixties, my father used to put a quarter in the jukebox and he'd play this song. Fond memories i have of my late father behind the bar with his white shirt and loving face. This song takes me right back. Its startling.
I'm 73 now, but when I was 13 in 1961 this record was released. It permeated my soul. That same year, Wonderland By Night by Bert Kaempfert was released. This was a dreamy time for me just before my Freshman year in high school. I'm grateful to have had that music to usher me into my pre-adult years. I still harken back to those memories.
This song used to make me cry when I was a child. I used to think it was because it was a sad music. Now 45 years later I realise it was because it was a beautiful music.
Back when this was popular my boyfriend played the clarinet. This song brings back such wonderfully sweet memories of him. ♥️ We both were in our teens. We went our separate ways and married other people. That was 50+ years ago! We are friends again.....this time on Facebook! We've both lost our spouses and live on opposite sides of the country. It's just so nice to talk again. He is still an amazing man. ❤️
Not sure why, but this song always reminds me of my Mom. It hit me in the heart when she was alive, and now that she's gone, it still hits my heart, but just a little bit harder. A beautiful song.
Hearing this today was a blessing from God. It reminds me so much of my dad. I have sat and listened and cried several times through. My dad could whistle this song and sound just like the clarinet! I grew up attending world war 2 reunions with him and I can't count the times I sat around tables with some of the greatest heroes in history listening to their stories while a live Big Band played this song. It is the soundtrack of a generation that has vanished into the past and when it plays I see them laugh and smile and dance again.
I am so saddened at the news item today is that famous Somerset clarinetist, Acker* Bilk, composer of the standard 'Stranger On The Shore' has died of 'old age'. ('Acker' is a Somerset term meaning 'mate' People nowadays find it weird that, in the late 50s and early 60's (pre rockabilly, Beatles and the Mersey sound), jazz numbers were often to be found in the top 10 hits most of the time. Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, Monty Sunshine, Archie Semple, Chris Barber, Terry Lightfoot and many others competed for the #1 Top of the Pops regularly. When I play this music today (I have many of the original records) it is like yesterday. They are a part of my 'DNA' and I shall forever be grateful to have experienced this piece and this era.To me it will always be one of the most beautiful sounds of my life.

Godbless.
Miss my dad sooo much this song takes me near him xx
My father also used to play this on his clarinet. Such happy memories
My dad also played this on the clarinet when I was a kid. The only song I think he knew. Lol. So beautiful. Many memories. We played it at his funeral.
Our dad too. He was a great musician. This was his favourite song.
This was my dads favourite song. My dad passed away 5 years ago. Listening to this transports me back to being a little girl watching him
making our fitted wardrobes in our bedroom and this playing on his tape recorder. This was back in 1960. I miss you dad.

@Linda I lost my Dad four years ago and NEVER a day goes by that I don't think of him and miss him. My big strong Dad who was always there and now gone forever - the hardest pain ever. I asked him for a 'message' once in my utter grief and he left me one. Try it Linda, your Dad IS out there somewhere listening to you and still loving you.
I was exploring new genres of music and found this on the list of Billboard magazine's Top Hot 100 songs of 1962. What a divine piece of music history, makes You feel nostalgia for something you never experienced.
a great song
lucky find.enjoy
Played this wonderful song at my dad's funeral on october 2013 as his coffin left the Church, great memories,
Had this at my mum and my dads funeral, they used to waltz around the lounge to this. Makes me cry everytime, sweet memories. I hope they are waltzing in heaven. 😘

It's just been announced that Acker has died, aged 85. This will always be remembered as his best known composition. Rest in peace, Acker.
Just awesome.
Beautiful
This was my mom and dad's wedding song when they got married in '69. Mom passed away 10 years ago, but this song brings me some calm when I need it and I can't call my dad and stepmom because it's late.
God bless you my dear ,,
This music brings me back to yesteryear and made me feel 50 years younger. Thank you.
💯
I,m 59 now and scottish ! when i was wee I saved like hell used to collect old newspapers from houses to take to chip shops to try to raise money and this was what i spent it on a 45 viynl record acker bilk for my mum as she loved it

When played like that the clarinet is such a beautiful instrument.
Yes. But how do you portamento (sliding) on a wind instrument?
Heavenly and straight to the loneliest corner of ones heart❤
you took the words right from me to describe this song
It's the tune I play always
Well put,Dolores.Thanks
This song is so relaxing. It calms me during these difficult times. Stay well & stay strong everyone. COVID-19 😥❤
And you as well, we need this song now, praying all are safe and well, and we get through this very soon

Yes Wendy ,your words are true, this song is a enjoyable tune. We all must count our blessings, and wait for Gods Kingdom ,for a real peace.
Wendy Mahaney you too love from scotland
Thank you Greg! 😊
This one is beautiful, so peaceful and sweet sounding. Acker Bilk was such a good clarinet player really. And so 57 years after it was released, it is still a good melody to hear and enjoy.

@@maikailoa808 I agree he could get such sweet sounding and mellow sounds from his instrument. Regards and have a nice day.
You cannot kill good music everlasting
I'm significantly deaf, more in the higher register. Although I love listening to all types of music I never dreamed of learning to play an instrument in my life. I heard this piece about 2months ago, and was so taken by it that I'm looking for a clarinet this week( 2nd hand! Obv😊) Wish me luck❣
It is the best of the best Don't stop the love .love yall
I know that feeling...I was not alive when this song came out ( 1962?) but I find myself longing for my Father and Grandmother. Not to worry because someday we will be reunited on that shore. May God Bless You
I must say Stranger on the Shore is the greatest music EVER for the clarinet. Plus the string arrangements and recording quality are unsurpassable! As a musician myself been listening to this masterpiece for 60 some years and is spellbinding, especially on 45 rpm record. Mesmerizing every time.
I agree with you.
💯 for review
for you, Dad, when you played your clarinet for me, this song is forever yours.
rest in peace always, my Father.
If only we could have music today like this.
We do

krbwjbarry: I just heard this right here. Seems we have this music today, and then some.
We have it right here
Yup. Here it is.
The clarinet takes me back fifty years and to beautiful memories..
Reminds me of my childhood happy days the world was a better place
you are fully right---
I feel the same way.
I agree, it was my parents wedding song in1955. Th we y had their reception at the Embassy Ballroom in Perth,Western Australia. Magnificent times. Never happen again.
This is *the* song that inspired me, at the age of eight, to take up the recorder, and later the clarinet. Thank you forever, Mr. Acker Bilk.
Listen to this as a young boy... loved it then, as much as I do today.
Feel my daddys arms around me :)
Katie Burgess That is one of the most touching comments I have ever read on you tube thanks you .I have played this song thousands of times on my trumpet it has and never will loss its special place in my life RIP Mr Acker Bilk thanks mate
Katie Burgess Bless your heart Katie. I listen to it for my memories too. some very good. & some make me sad.. Best Wishes and Kindest Regards.
Hello
Your comment has bought a tear to my eye, I'm so sorry you lost your father at such a young age. I have a daughter who's 10 and she means the world to me.
God bless you
Take care
Katie Burgess I don't believe in miracles and such things, but every now and then the universe delivers up something that sure sounds or feels like one. I think a lot of us know how that made you feel! :-)
I am still amazed by how this song always takes me into a higher world.
This was the sign off song for just about every disc jockey in the early 60s. Still love it.
I'm 28 and love this kind of music. The classics are far superior to what is produced today. I don't understand how anyone could dislike this. It's simply gorgeous and timeless.
How can anybody not get goose bumps to this masterpiece
Just did before reading your comment!
For sure with your girl on the sands of Hawaii beaches ...
Goosey mee
I was actually born without goosebumps and that's quite offensive
it hurts 2 much
I was 5 when this came out and remember it perfectly well with black and white footage of a beach in Britain. it reminds me of my childhood in the UK. I was remembering it today which is why I looked it up. Such a beautiful and unforgettable melody.
It was the theme to a television show about a french oupair (incorrect spelling) in England
Memories..1962, Holly Beach Louisiana, newlyweds sleeping in a tent on the beach listening to this. How I miss him 💔
When I was a lot younger I thought the clarinet was a rather screechy instrument then I heard Acker Bilk play this and it turns out that in his hands it is one of the most beautiful sounds of all, truly one of the greatest talents he is greatly missed.
💯
My Dad's favourite tune - he would have been 108 years young today.

Feeling emotional to this instrumental song.. can’t help but cry
You're not alone.
It is a totally emotional, evocative piece
Beautiful, enchanting, haunting. It echos in my heart
💯
Maybe the most beautiful melody I ever heard
You should listen to more music.
I heard this before but had no idea what it was called, thank you to that movie The Wanderers from 1979 for telling me.
from the days when an instrument was an extension to a musicians voice, it has heart and feeling and soul, so little music now has any of those things

Agreed! Much of today's music is filled with noise and anger. It seems that when we witness true musicians like this (Kenny G) they stand out above the rest.
There's lots of great stuff out there. You're not looking hard enough.
Where would you suggest we look?
Russell Dobbins, the point is we shouldn't have too look so hard. The majority of music should be this good.
Such a beautifully haunting song that never grows old...
Born in 1960, this was one of the songs of my childhood ❤
How could 39 people turn thumbs down! Unfreakin' believable. One of THE most beautiful instrumental songs ever written and performed.
It's a puzzle to me. I've loved this song since it first came out, and I was just a little girl of 9 years old.
there are negative people whose goal it is to show THUMBS DOWN ON EVERY POST! they love seeing people get upset with them and chew them out. sick people.
Those people just appreciate good music.🌷
I remember this when it was in the charts back in '62. A classic that is timeless and always great to hear.
@Martyn H....YESSSSS
I was a little kid then, but I 'got it'.
This was one of my Dad’s favorites. He even had the album in his collection. I just heard it in a random video, and tried to tell my grand daughter about it, and surprised my self by choking up.
A haunting song. Wonderful!!!!
So agree, it evokes feelings of total relaxation and peace

The great Acker Bill .. it’s like tears running over your heart ! So sadly missed .
blows you away, he is still the greatest
Not sure why, but this song always reminds me of my Mom. It hit me in the heart when she was alive, and now that she's gone, it still hits my heart, but just a little bit harder.
A beautiful song.
possibly my favourite piece of music just beautiful
('Acker' is a Somerset term meaning 'mate'
People nowadays find it weird that, in the late 50s and early 60's (pre rockabilly, Beatles and the Mersey sound), jazz numbers were often to be found in the top 10 hits most of the time.
This song is haunting me today. I love it. Nothing like this today
