Love Unlimited Orchestra ~ Love's Theme 1973 Disco Purrfection Version

- This was the very first disco song that hit #1 on the pop chart and broke out in the clubs because radio would not touch it, proving the power of the DJ. People ran to the record stores for this one and that forced radio to include it on their playlists. I feel intoxicated, surrounded by all those ethereal strings and the different levels of instruments like bass, and the wah wah guitars magically shaking my booty! Freedom BABY! It would be a few months before the double whammy of "Rock Your Baby" and "Rock The Boat" would cement the future of disco on radio, but Barry White got there first with this one. Some critics have written this off as "fluff", "nothing substantial", and my favorite "the cheesy soundtrack to a porn movie"....nevertheless it became a defining moment in the evolution of disco. It was written for Love Unlimited as an instrumental introduction to their song "Under The Influence Of Love" ...the run time of the two songs came to 8:19 giving DJ's a chance to breathe since mixing three minute singles together took up all of their time. The production values on this one were sterling, sorry I cant say the same for "Under The Influence of Love"...the song sounds harsher than it is due to the lack of the abundantly sugary strings like its predecessor. I like it though, a bit rougher and tougher. In any case, the girls first got together in 1969 and became backup singers for Barry White productions. Soon, Barry took a shine to one of them named Glodean and the next thing you know, they are married. Love Unlimited did have some decent R&B hits like "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love" in 1972, the #1 R&B hit, "I Belong To You" and even recorded a vocal version of "Love's Theme" for the same LP "In Heat", but to no avail. By 1980 the musical magic was gone and the women went their separate ways. They follow a grand pop tradition of having a hit song on their album that they did not do vocals for and thus no credit. Another example of this phenomenon is "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles and Co. It was a big hit as an instrumental, but the vocal version tanked. I dug up the single and gave it a listen..the song was not focused. It was like the vocals got in the way of this fantastic groove. Oh well.. I thought it was time to extend this one, I hope you like it.

January 1974 I worked my last shift in the steel mill. The next morning I got on a bus to the Pittsburgh airport to move to California. The temperature was close to zero degrees. My brother picked me up at the San Francisco airport and it was a glorious day driving over the Bay bridge. It was then that this song came on the radio. Was feeling like I never had before. Driving over the bay on a glorious sunny day and listening to this song. It was my start to a whole new life.
Beautiful ❤
Wow imaginé cada detalle que narraste, que hermoso a mi me viene a mi mente mi niñez y mi padre en su taller oyendola ❤️

Thanks for sharing this beautiful story, it played like a movie in my mind 👍
I don't know you but have to say I'm a bit envious of that memory.
I’m 86 years young and grew up in the 50s, I first heard this song in 1973 and still love it I hope you 70’s children don’t mind.
😘
Respect SIR! I have to go 24 years to reach you. Long and healthy life I wish. ..and a lot of Love (Theme).
R U kidding. White UK 70's dude here and Ive always been nuts about the Philly thing...Was the odd kid in class back then.. ...haha fool them.
Born in 1957 so I was a late teen in this magical era of American R&B and Soul. An older man like yourself was truly blessed to have witnessed the birth of rock and roll and all that followed it. You have great taste and I'm sure, much wisdom too. May you have many future years of health and happiness Sir.
😊 mam 50 lat, tak więc urodziłam się w latach 70. Uwielbiam te piosenkę i cieszę się, że łączy pokolenia. ;)
I'll be 62 in a few weeks. Today, I heard this at my favorite barbershop, and man! The memories flooded back. Thank God I grew up in the 70s and got to experience great music like this from Barry White, and the other musicians and singers of yesteryear...like Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Teddy Pendergrass, Gladys Knight, Al Green, Earth, Wind & Fire, Average White Band, Isley Brothers, Ohio Players, Parliament-Funkadelic, etc. We had/have it good!!! We heard it when it was new, and we get to reminisce.
I'm 63 years old Japanese. Lou Rawls, The Ojay's, The Commodores, Rufus, Gene Chandler, and Larry Graham, their music made my young heart flutter.
One of the most nostalgic tracks to take you back to the wonderful 70's. The 70's would not have been the same without Barry White.
Still my favourite song. It’s now 2024 and I can listen to this all day long ❤️🤟🏼
I'm 69 yrs old and still Jamming to this song!!!!
Turning 63 and I still love this song. It brings back really great memories from band ❤

We were living in Bismarck, ND at the time when a tornado was spotted. My Dad "piled" all of us in the Dodge Polara, said goodbye to the neighbor and off we went TOP SPEED!! This song was on the radio. My Dad will forever be my Hero.
1972 Dodge Polara. My first car the age of 18 in 1987. I miss that car.
Sadly my Dad died in 1973 when I was 12 and I have been heart broken ever since. That said this theme taught me how to live and love all creatures great and small.
You poor darling - so glad you learned how to survive heartbreak

Felt this comment as I lost my dad as well and he too listened to these songs in the 70s and now I’m stuck and love the 70s songs. I’m 57 (born in 1967)..forever thankful, Daddy🥰 RIH🙏🏽

@@magalyfernandez8816Man... timing. I wrote that comment about the 8-track a month ago. I was born in '70, and just lost my Dad a couple of weeks ago. I've been helping my Mom clean out their house, and listening to 70s music the entire time.
My Dad was a huge fan of this gentleman and so am I. Miss you Dad and hope to see you again ❤❤

on as tous un papa qui manque! et moi aussi j'aimerai le revoir a 69 ans
This is my favorite song in life! It's smooth, it's mellow, it's soothing. It makes me think of happy times, when all of my family was still alive; when we had trees on the block, when there was still a thing called community. It gets to my soul and marrow. This may not make sense, but then again, some things just can't be explained!
So very, very, true!❤

Great what a classic o yes
Fifty one years already for this masterpiece!
Barry White's brilliant musical career began because he learned music in reform school after being arrested after stealing tires. God empowers the chosen ones. I'm 64 young, Portugal/Brasil.
I lost my precious wife to cancer...she was only 59 years old...We absolutely loved this music and it brings me such good memories...Prayers to all who have lost loved ones...
I lost my beloved husband to cancer almost 4 yrs ago at age 59 . I feel your pain. The 70’s what a great decade for great music..
I lost my husband at the age of 32 I was 13 when this song was out and I still love it today and I am 62 now . Takes me back love all the 70s and 80s music 🎶
Condolences 💐
I too lost my beautiful wife to the Pfizer vax after developing blood clots.
God bless you sam.
@NYE - Dylan sorry for your loss.
My Mom used to dance me in her arms to this when I was little to calm me down. She passed away 2 days ago and I play this song every chance I get.
Oh my. I hurt for you. I introduced my father to this tune many years ago and he just loved it...and then died in 2014. I still miss him seven years on, so can only remember the sadness you are dealing with right now. It's still there and always will be, but the sharp edge is dulled a bit with time too. I hope you will experience the same.
All my best to see you through these terrible times. Maybe it will help, if only a tiny bit. And otherwise, if I may be so bold, do remember this tune literally SOARS upward with hope and happiness. I think your mom would still want to give this gift to you, as my father would wish to share it we me. We are both sad...but lucky to have had them too.
I'm so sorry 💔💔💔
Sorry for your loss
God bless her

Totally agree. I was a young youthful student in London aged 17. Best time zone to grow up with all the greatest musicals and songs.
I am now 65 and still listening to it.
I was fortunate to hear this music as a young adult during the time I worked in my first job.

Hearing this wonderful composition makes me cry ! so pure, so lovely many memories come to my mind. well .... mmm.
This was the first tune that introduced me to the legendary Barry White's music in 1973. Hard to believe that this classic tune is 50 years old. The Maestro himself is gone but his musical legacy lives on. RIP 🙏

I totally agree with you! Sometimes feel a little bit sad when I listen to them! But I love this song so much
Just 2 years later we got The Hustle, them 2 vying for my #1.

Yes , indeed .
Writen ? And Instrumental Music with no Lyrics ? How ?
Unless , the Music itself , of course is well writen musically with Special Rythm
Is just beautiful.
While in bumper to bumper traffic I was blasting Love's Theme and someone asked me what's the name of that song. I'm 66 and still play their music today. Barry White's arrangement is perfection. A timeless classic.
I feel sorry for people who’ve always had music at their fingertips. They’ll never know the thrill of hearing THAT SONG on the radio. Staying in the car to finish a song because it was too good to miss even a bar of it. Kind of like waiting all year for a Christmas special to come on TV.
Some little bit of magic has gone, but I’ll admit there are compensations. 😊
One of the most beautiful Instrumentals ever. R.I.P. Mr Barry White.
say that again
AMEN ❤❤❤
Indeed ❤
This deserves so much more than it is given time for
Very true Barry was the man.
Beautiful music from a time when being a kid was riding around on your bike with a transistor radio hanging from the handlebars and having fun with your friends...no Instagram filling your head with poison.

1973! Nixon in the White house, 10¢ candy bars, sodas, chips, ice creams, 5¢ scoop of ice cream at Thriftys. 55¢ Big Mac's and Whopper's. 35¢ a gallon gas! Gas loving guzzling hogs land yacht's all over USA roads and freeways. Bought this same album brand new in 1973! for $1.99. Still have it. Memories of a time when America was still great even with the so called issues of the time. Never to return, but only in a Pipedream. So glad I lived it. Was only 13 then. This record was the first I ever bought with my own money when was a kid in the seventies. I heard it from my neighbor who played it over and over, and I liked it so much I had to buy my own copy.
When I was a kid and my Mom had her home stereo turned on and this song started playing on the radio, I would always run from wherever I was to lay down next to the stereo speakers and close my eyes and just enjoy the melody. This song will always remind me of my Mom. She has been gone over 35 years, I miss her so very much.
Me to Tom. I actually love love love the melody. When you listen to the song and melody nothing else matters. Or exists at the time

shed here make

I dedicate this song to my dad!!! Who's going on 83 years old!!! I had a great daddy!!! I'm 53 yrs old, and I can still remember my dad taking me to the Rialto Theater here in Atlanta to see Godzilla vs Megalon!!!! Lol. I remember this song playing before the movie started. He also would, believe it or not, take me to the zoo every time I asked him! I don't remember him ever turning me down! He has early stage of dementia; my daddy cries sometimes because he can't find things because he forgets where he puts them. Wow, this is tough. I love him! He saved my life once from drowning, he bought my first and second car! But back to the zoo! He would hold me on his shoulders as I looked at Willie B!
It was just me and him doing these things! He saved my life again at Six Flags!! I got on the parachutes with him, and I slid
down under the bar. He said that his eyes were close, because we were so high, and he said when he opened them, I was hanging on to the bar that was supposed to be across my lap. He pulled me back up. I can go on and on, but I just wanted to dedicate this masterpiece of a song to my great and wonderful dad!!!
I think of him and us when I hear this!! Great memories of us together in the 70s! I never felt unloved by him still to this day!! He still tries to look after me!!! What a good man!!!! I love you dad!!!! I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!!!
LOVE LOVE THIS...GREAT MEMORIES, THE 70ts will never come back...our music was so much better that what they have now!

Una de las Joyas musicales de Barry Whithe a mis 66 años y aun la sigo escuchando inimitable
This song embodies the 1970s, it is a musical representation of love, hope, passion, and renewal. There is something in this music that generates upliftment. I was a baby when this song was released but I heard it playing as part of the backdrop of my life, one of the anchors in my life's soundtrack. That you Mr. Barry White for this expression of love- keep soaring

The violins sound like they are actually singing themselves. No words needed. Just listen. Thank you Barry.
Yes they do, and they have largely been lost, except in film scores. An emotional instrument the violin. Soaring .
They often bring out the tears in me (and they are right now). Certainly the best background instrument too, the violin....
But not here. :D Here they are on the very cusp. And it couldn't be any better.
This song is a masterpiece, timeless and lovely. It's why all of us fans come to this channel everyday to hear this. The string arrangements are marvelous!

An absolute masterpiece and I remember my mum and dad dancing around the kitchen to this. So many happy memories, thank you Mr Barry White, you left us too soon😢💔
Gosh dang it. Real music, real rhythm, REAL heart and soul. Behold.
Somehow until today I DID NOT know that Barry White composed this.
I was 15 when it came out.
I'm blown away. The world needs Barry White more today than ever.
Indeed it does!💙
Definitely brings back yesteryears! I was born in 1968 and I would always hear this instrumental music around 3pm. Absolutely phenomenal music and soothing above and beyond!
19 years young when Love's Theme hit the Dance floor.Glad I grew up in the 70's between Disco & Rock music! Blessed times!
You got it right.
This song has to be the greatest healer of a blues mood.
I feel as though the entire 70s is responsible for that ability.
AS a DJ in the 70's this was gold and so was Barry

What I want to know is how the Hell did I get from there to here so damned quick! Anyone else relate?

Blink of an eye Jay.
I was 9 when this came out. And I feel like I'm 20. Mathematics , however, doesn't agree.

My mother, God bless her, is 82 years old and has loved this song for the almost 50 years it has been around! She plays it quite often at her house when she is listening to music along with Love Is Blue, A Taste of Honey, Music Box Dancer, and other great instrumentals from the 1960's and 70's. What a great time it was to be alive!!!!!
Soulful Strut is another great one! BTW, my Mom is 82 also.....
Enjoy every minute of the time y'all have. Peace out.

@@nashtndawg Thank you for bringing up “soulful strut”. I haven’t heard that in so long but I agree with you. I’m going to make sure I find it and listen to it again
Wooohweeeeeeh, Barry White the ultimate MAESTRO is killing it again, again, again and again. Thanks to you BW. Why did you leave us so soon? Your contribution was global, now we have nothing goes straight to heart and soul.
