Yeah,To Tame A Land Was one of the best tracks on the album in my opinion but always tends to get overlooked.
Piece of Mind was originally to be titled Dune. The band asked Frank Herbert permission, he does not like metal and denied them use of the title.
Too bad Frank Herbert was such a metal-hating, anti-IM douchebag that he absolutely forbid his book's title to be associated with any Iron Maiden song, hence Harris' "To Tame A Land" title. I still call it "Dune" though, for accuracy, and as a "fuck you" to Herbert, in a kind of "Iron Maiden got the last laugh and did a song about your damn book ANYWAY".
This whole album is great! My first introduction to Iron Maiden! My favorite album by them! Then Powerslave next!

The musicianship of Maiden is top notch. To have that many people play so tight is amazing. Kel I was going to give you a hard time for stepping out during a Maiden show, but you acknowledged that, and still think it's worth it to get your hat so I'll let you off the hook. Wow very nice! Together with my wife we were so hyped of Legacy Tour last year in Europe, that we are going today to NYC from Poland just for two maiden shows in Brooklyn ;)
For as long as they have been around, they still played half of the Piece of Mind (1983) album at the show. This, The Trooper, Flight of Icarus and Where Eagles Dare. My favorite of their albums.

All this Maiden talk, and the story of Kel's aviator helmet, and seeing Rich's fedora collection on the wall to boot, reminds me of the old joke that (in part) inspired the name of the band's Mascot, "Eddie T Head" :
Eddie was born without a body, but nonetheless, his parents loved him dearly and always gave him lots of attention and showered him with loads of presents on his birthdays and holidays.
One day, Eddie's doctor calls up the house and tells his parents that medical science has progressed to where they can actually build a body for Eddie. His parents were os excited, but waited to tell Eddie the good news until his birthday the following week.
So, comes the big day, Eddie's parents come into his room, and say, "Hello, Eddie... this year, for your birthday, we have a special surprise for you, you're going to love it!"
His mother is practically in tears with joy and says "Oh, Eddie, it's so wonderful, you'll never believe what we have for you...!"
And that's when Eddie chimes in, "Ohh, no... NOT ANOTHER BLOODY HAT!!"
Saw them here in New Orleans....my little sister got sick and I had to go outside. I missed half the show doin the big brother thing..it was worth it....awwwe...
Ah Revelations at last! This was the very first Iron Maiden song I ever played on bass.

As a kid this was my favorite song to put on while reading fantasy novels/books. Actually the whole album was on repeat for a year or so! Up The Irons!
I was at the show in south Florida..killer show..I was down on the floor in front of the stage...I can jus picture kel running down the promenade during this song to get the aviator hat lol up the irons
I really do enjoy watching you both on this Maiden journey. Best band in the world, hands down IMHO. Seeing them here in Brooklyn in two days! I can’t even count how many shows I’ve been to and they never get old.

easily one one of Maiden's top tracks. The best word to define this tune, IMO, is not 'epic', but is instead 'sublime'. they were firing on all cylinders here -- this may be Bruce's single career-best performance. And he wrote the song, too boot! Classic Maiden, classic metal....classic perfection. What makes it even better is Kel's reactions. She's a trained musician and to see her totally digging this lends it even more credibilility!
I think the live version from _Live after Death_ is even better. Faster, and Bruce outshines himself.
I had this album on cassette in the eighties and used to sit in my room and listened to it cranked all the way with the head phones on.
I'm so envious. I wanted to go to that concert so bad. Had no one to go with. I so want that aviator hat lol.
If you can, you should find the isolated bass track to this (or listen to a cover), it’s such a good bass line!
The first time I saw this song live back during the Live After Death tour in 1985 the "clean" guitar was played by Bruce Dickinson. I don't remember ever seeing him playing the guitar ever again.

I went to that how and got pulled over for speeding after the show...the officer saw my shirt and asked me if Bruce Dickinson was still in the band...after gushing how great the show was he let me off without a ticket and bid me safe travel. Iron Maiden has saved me in more ways than one...up the irons!!!!

My band back in the 80s covered this song along with the Trooper, and 2 minutes to midnight, saw the Power Slave, Somewhere in time,and Seventh Son ,tours.
Revelations live from Sydney Australia from Somewhere back on tour is just amazing
I learned to play bass guitar to this song back in the mid-80’s. No internet to get the music so painstakingly rewound the tape over and over until I got it. This has to be one of Maidens finest songs, particularly the bass in the quiet parts and at the end.

Purchased this album new when I was 13 in '83....and this was and is my all-time favorite Maiden song.....And as another subscriber has requested....."To Tame a Land" was officially in my opinion they're first epic 'long song'.....you know, like a level up from "Hallowed be thy Name" from "Number" 1982.....It's pretty impressive and has all the Maiden elements done so fine......I was absolutely impressed as a 13 year old hearing it for the first time, and it is just as enjoyable to listen and respect today......

Back in the -84 i was a 16 year old boy searching for any kind of music I could call MINE, THIS IS ME! I came across this record "Piece of mind", with this zombie-like creature and was like "OK, COOL". I was not into Maiden at this point, because this was definetly NOT the kind of music my parents would want me to listen to. Maybe just because of that I had to get this record. Anyway, first time listening and "Where eagles dare" with it's hammering drums thundering out through the speakers and I was sold to the devil. From that moment Iron Maiden has been the one Heavy Metal-group i always return to. "Piece of mind" and "Powerslave" still has a special place in my music collection. I was totally BLOWN AWAY! Your reaction reminds me of that time.
This was Nikkos first album with the band. I guess he worked out :p

Alot of ppl might not know that bruce dickinson is also a qualified airline pilot & as flown international flights ..to add to kels love of aviation ...
RIP your son. He's in a better place now rocking it out before God. However, it's not right for a child to die before his parents... It's just too cruel...
However still, my parents died a couple years ago and I still feel helpless and defenceless because of it... But I prayed and God gave me rest and strength. Let Him give you that, too.

Kell and Rich how did you like the sound at the concert...I've seen Iron Maiden 10 times since 1985 here in Kansas and Colorado....Did you like the live sound vs Studio album sound....Please Respond your thoughts.
The sound of the band was a 10/10. We were able to talk while still being able to feel and hear each instrument really well. Having headphones linked to the soundboard would be a more reasonable comparison for me. Hearing them over the stereo in our living room vs. concert live? Concert Live hands down! there is not a band ever, that has the story telling power and feel as Iron Maiden does. ive been to at least 7 concerts of theirs through my life and can tell you, hands down, nobody is better live than they are. they sound the same live as in studio, they are totally consistent in their performances, and the sound never waivers. compromise is not a word in their vocabulary.
I had to see this song live to realize just how good it is.
