It’s going to be awhile before we can get our home livable again. Contractors are so busy and called for a dumpster. They called and canceled due to the dump being destroyed. Our town and life is forever changed.

The difference between Boca and Northport is they're mostly millionaires and billionaires on Boca. They mostly will not feel the loss like the other regular people because they can afford repairs. All loss is sad but my heart goes out to mobile and other homeowners not able to afford Fl huge deductibles on homeowners. It's unconsciable

There are so many RV'S that are not selling. In our city in Oregon the dealer's lots are so full they will never sell. Why can't these home's and large campers be donated to those on need from all states. They are just going to pay for their inventory so why not a small incentive for them to give to people in need. The news goes so fast, people are in turmoil and not think if our beautiful Florida. Begin to put out more info on the current conditions and tell people and company's end of year inventory would be so helpful. Just a thought

Just flew in from Michigan to clean up my Boca Grande North condo. The condo association has been doing a fantastic job coordinating the cleanup and repairs. Spent the weekend picking up drywall in my condo and moving everything out of the way for the contractors. Feeling optimistic for the first time since the hurricane.

Some people who live on these islands. Bought homes 40-50 years ago for maybe 200k. Properties have sky rocketed in value. A modest nice home rose to 1 and a half million. Not all are rich people

When my Mom lived in NW Port Charlotte, my favorite day trip was Boca Grande and the southern tip of Englewood. So heartbreaking to see. I’m grateful my Mom was not around to experience this horrible event since she passed on 20 ago. Jose thanks for sharing this with us💔💔💔 I can’t tolerate Red Tide. So allergic. 😢

Correction: Boca Grand did not have storm surge. According to Forbes Baca Grand has the wealthiest zip code in the US. That damage was 99% done by wind. If there was storm surge it would look like Sanibel.
The water is not fit for any one to be in it.

We are in that area, lol!! The water under those bridges was sucked out right before the worst of the storm came in. Over the 2nd bridge to the left is our sandbar boat hang out on boat days, such fun summer days, I'm sure it's all shifted quite a bit now. And u should've smelled it the week after the storm, I live just off the island in the south gulf cove community so u probably passed my neighborhood on Gasparilla, where all the sailboats are stored and looked like dominos after the storm but it smelled like total death for several wks after, I've never smelled anything like it,, prob longer and having no power or anything we had to leave windows and doors open, the smell was just horrible! It wasn't so much red tide either, can only imagine what all contributed to the horrid smell. Not many know about Englewood either cus we are the small forgotten coastal town just off of Boca! My neighborhood is mostly newer houses to, many didn't stand up to the wind, roofs ripped off, caved in, destroyed, including our home. My husband's shop in Englewood was destroyed, he's a mechanic, they just got it all back opened finally!! And our wind speeds were 208 mph here, the news was hush hush for whatever reason but our county officials had a meeting on it and finally released wind speeds to residents! Gusts were much higher! Wind meters were set up at the boat ramps u passed as u came up to the toll to get on the island. We took a bad hit here and many don't realize it, just wish Englewood wasn't so forgotten. We are natives and Ian was the worst storm we've ever been thru and we've been thru tons! Thank u for at least going to Boca Grande to show the devastation, much of what our neighborhood looked like as well. Thank u for the coverage, great job! Oh, and one of the most Boca famous restaurants, South Beach literally right on the beach, was completely destroyed and then caught fire during the end of the storm and burnt to the ground,it was there for decades and very well known but they're rebuilding and will bounce back! Boca is such a peaceful island, we have spent many wonderful days out there exploring and beaching it!

This is SO bizarre to see…I’ve been around other major hurricane aftermaths and cleanups in FL (IRMA in the Keys south of Marathon for example) and they were absolutely hives of activity. Giant earth movers loading debris onto huge haulers, relief workers and supporting crews (food prep etc.) all under fat FEMA contracts with deadline incentives. WTF is going on with all the videos I’ve seen, including incredibly expensive property areas like Boca Grande, where not only is there no apparent cleanup activity, it looks like they’ve been totally abandoned, just left behind to rot in the sun. The contrast is incredible and incredibly disturbing. It’s really beginning to feel like we’ve become some kind of Third World country that can’t deal with the technical specialized and expensive things like disaster cleanup and recovery that we used to take for granted. PERMANENTLY. Unbelievable.

Even if most of these property owners decide to rebuild, it will take a lifetime before it all "returns to pre-hurricane normal". Problem is, when's the next major hurricane going to destroy it all again? So, is rebuilding in these vulnerable areas even a sane decision? I realize people have already sunk huge investments into their properties, but the odds are terrible. What about the private insurance companies? The risk of future bankruptcy must be 100%. Isn't there a tipping point beyond which it just becomes irrationally futile to keep rebuilding over and over again?

You’re exactly right that it is one of the most beautiful places in the country. It is probably one of the most exclusive places & they charge you to go over the bridge to get into Boca grande which I’m sure that that is to keep most lookee Lous away. So there is never too much traffic in that town. I’m so sorry to see it looking this way. 🥲
