- This video shows Little Gasparilla Island and some marinas in Boca Grande after Hurricane Ian came through.
I went down there to help with the cleanup efforts and thought I'd make this video for those who haven't yet been able to check on their belongings or their boat storage facilities.
Here's what you'll see in this video:
- Palm Harbor Marina
- Eldred's Marina
- Little Gasparilla homes (from north canal down to the southern point)
- Gasparilla Marina
- Boca Grande (aka - Millers) Marina
- Whidden's Marina
Our continued thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been impacted by this storm.
Please make sure to donate money and/or time to the organizations who are out helping rescue those in need and for those who are cleaning up debris.
Here are a couple that could surely use some extra support:
- Florida Disaster Fund
- American Red Cross
Please leave a comment below for any other organizations that would be good to donate to. - Zábava
Whoever built some of the piers, they were really skilled. Amazing that they held up.
So crazy to see!
Keeping Florida in our prayers.
Thank you for the prayers!
I grew up on this island and Doc Shep is my Dad. So glad everyone is safe
This place holds tons of memories for lots of people!
My heart breaks seeing this footage. Me and my family have vacationed there and absolutely love the island. Thanks for taking this video and best of luck with your recovery.
That island holds a lot of memories for a lot of people! Thank you for your support!
Thank you for bringing attention to our wonderful island and community.🏝
Welcome!
thank you, I shared on some of my ministry pages for others to view. Thank you everyone who has been praing for all of us In Florida
Thank you for sharing the info as well as for the prayers!
Thanks for sharing! Prayers for everyone there!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Thanks for the update. Wishing FLA the best from NY. Stay strong, Stay Salt Strong.
We appreciate it! Thank you!
Thank you for uploading this. Some of the best years of my life were spent here!
We agree! Thank you for checking it out!
Thanks for the update Luke! So sad
You are welcome! Very sad!
My sister and brother-in-law are one of the lucky ones. Their house is standing with what they describe as livable damages. However after the electricity came back their septic system is messed up. They have to use neighbors accommodations. They are retired living on LGI they are very grateful and impressed with the volunteers that have come to help restore order.
So glad to hear they are ok and made it through safely.
It's really striking how bad some buildings and docks were affected while others look to be in really good shape. Don't scrimp on building materials or upgrading existing properties, don't stretch the building codes or choose builders who have less than a stellar reputation.
It is crazy to see!
Thanks for this video, from a local follower.
Thanks for watching!
Great footage! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
It is sad to see all the devastation, from Hurricane Ian. Our hope and prayers go out to everyone who stayed, and survived, and everyone else returning home! As you approached those marinas, I could help but think of all the sunken debris, and fuel and oils getting into the water. We are glad you guys are safe, and wish the best for you all, as you rebuild your lives!
Thank you and we appreciate the support!
Prayers to all those that have lost. I hope our SaltStrong family are all safe and well. The coast here a little farther south is unrecognizable. Haven’t been able to get on the water yet. Stay safe.
Thank you!
Our mobile home in St James City is still standing by some miracle. Plan on heading over next weekend to get a tarp up because the NOAA images show roof damage. The trailer was about 8 feet above high tide. From the pictures a neighbor took it doesn’t look like surge got in.
Glad you had minimal damage! Travel safe and take care!
Great video - well done. Very sad to see the damage.
Thank you for watching and we can't wait to see it rebuilt and better than ever!
Thank you for the update, our long time rental is totaled. We were coming down Tuesday for a stay, so sad!!🙏
We are so sorry to hear this!

Yeah I was looking forward all year to the Fishing, but it’s just a vacation for me and my family, I feel so bad for all the people who lost so much and praying for a quick recovery!!❤️👍🙏
Thanks Luke! ❤Salt💪
Thank you for the support!
Unbelievable amount of damage very sad but Floridians strong we will get through this prayers for all that have lost this round to Mother Nature. Any one seen or heard about Everglades city?
We have not seen much on that area, if we do we will update!
Thanks for the content
Welcome!
Keeping our friends and family in our thoughts and prayers.
Agree! Thanks for the prayers!
Nice job! I’d like to see a vid of the gulf side of gasparilla.
We will try to get back out there soon!
@@Saltstrong Have you seen After Dune Delight? Did it make it?
Hi from Virginia Beach!!🏖😢
Hello!
very sad to see, thankyou for doing this to let people see.
So sad to see!
of course you went Luke...good job buddy! I just power 1 hr ago on Palma Sola Bay. Anna Maria took some hits too...most don't have power yet, the marina off the cortez bridge has some pretty badly damaged boats....the fishing villiage looks pretty good close to the Coast Guard Station.
Glad you got power restored. The whole area was affected, so sad to see.
My family owns the house on the point of the north canal. We completely lost the house and found the roof 100 yards away in a front yard. Our couch was also found at the very end of the canal. A lot of great memories made there its sad to see it go. Also my mom says she was friends with Joe in high school (cherilyn walker)!
We are so sorry to hear that! We hope they can rebuilt and make. new memories there!
Lets just hope this is the LAST hurricane, this year!
Agree!
Such devistation prayers up my friends Ricky 💃🕺🎵🐈⬛🎸
Agree! So sad to see!
That damage was pretty catastrophic! Even the buildings that look like they stood up to the wind may have taken a bad hit by the storm surge. It’s just sad that such a pretty island took such a devastating hit.
We agree!
Thank you for showing all the unfortunate damage of people's life.
I'm a retiring firefighter from Stuart and Jensen Beach. I have recently purchased a Dragonfly Classic 17' skiff. I have had dreams to get over to these areas to fish....😥😔 it's going to be awhile for those dreams.
Is the there anything as Salt Strong members we can do to help put something together for the residents?
We are working on putting together a plan to help, thanks for the support!
Looks like a lot of the homes built on stilts did ok. I’m sure they still have a fair amount of wind damage but at least they avoided the surge.
It was so heartbreaking to see!
The last time I was down there right after a storm there were 1000s of dead mullet and quite a few snook floating dead in the canals. There were a couple other bay species too. I don't know what killed them but it doesn't look like it happened this time. It was brutal, like red tide without the lung irritation. All the loss and destruction is really sad to see, but at least the fish are okay. So far.
It could have been all the fresh water, or oil and fuel, that killed the fish?! Or just being beaten to death, during the hurricane?
@@chrissewell1608 I don't know. I remember being surprised by all the dead fish but nobody knew what killed them. I doubt it was fuel because there's got to be more fuel in the water this time. It's a good question and I don't know the answer but I'd like to.
Thanks for the feedback, it is sad to see but hopefully will be rebuilt over time.
Thanks for the update Luke. Sad to see the damages, but I have to wonder: if this area (and much of Waterfront Florida) had adopted the Monroe (County) Doctrine, I don’t think we’d be looking at losses like this.
Unfortunately our politicians have given way to the building lobbies to allow stick (frame) and modular construction. Did you notice a disparity in damages from stick vs CBS construction? Either way, let’s hope loss of life is minimal, and everyone’s boats are have survived. 🙏 ❤
Hurricane and tornado zones are no place for poor construction menthods. Insurance is just a backup plan. Unfortunately between insurance and vagaries of a tourist based economy a lot of people can't make upgrades or try to cut corners.
Thanks for the feedback, it is really sad to see. Most of the homes on the island are wood frame.
Luke...I live in Cape Coral, but got lucky for sure. The area got creamed. Just wondering...did you get to your destination by boat or trailer it to the area? The scuttlebutt has been that the water is dangerously cluttered with debris. Did you find this to be so on your journey?

hey man, appreciate the video is gasparilla marina functional, we have a boat there and they are not taking calls or updating social media on the situation, we are trying to come down to make it little gasparilla but it hinges on the marina being active. Thank you!
There is no power or internet in that area when we last checked.
@@Saltstrong Thank you!
Did the lighthouses on the southern tip make it?
We do not have any information on that area at this time.
@@Saltstrong The Gasparilla Lighthouse on Boca Grande, unfortunately, sustained structural damage and will be closed the rest of season 2022 until a restoration can be completed. However we still do not know the status of the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse built in 1890 where I volunteer as a tour guide for the museum. Fingers crossed we will be able to re-open in November!!! Fingers crossed! It appears to have sustained quite a bit of cosmetic damage on the outside- but engineers & Coast Guard will decide if our Lighthouse will be safe to re-open to public! Fingers crossed!.
Sorry I can not watch this video. I have seen enough of these videos on the news. I would hope Salt Strong would gather its members to support the devastation this hurricane released on Fort Myers and surrounding areas.
We are working on helping more and we appreciate your support!
These are my home fishin grounds. Need a break from the cleanup. Any chance there are fish to be caught yet?
We haven't been out to fish that area yet but we sure hope so!
so sorry to see all the destruction, playing for all .
Thank you for the prayers!
Did Boca Grande get a storm surge? Some of these buildings that look like they faired well with the wind could have been completely gutted on the inside by surge.
We don't have much info on that area at this time.
Whats the scoop on Cayo Costa? Thanks
We don't have any info on that area at this time. Sorry we can't help further.
Comparable to how Hurricane Ida totally destroyed almost every building on Grand Isle, La and left several feet of sand in the streets last year.
It is horrible for sure!
If those mangled trees had bark before and now they are stripped bare, that would be indicative of +150 MPH winds blasting through there.
The wind was high for sure! It is so crazy to see!
What happened to the light house ? I assume totally destroyed .
We don't have any info on that area currently.
Ian was a freaking gut punch from hell
We agree! So sad to see!
What about thornton key stump pass the palm island resort ??? Watching from the philippines
We do apologize as we do not have any information at that area at this time.
@@Saltstrong thank you
Why is the screen not wide? You have to change the setting. It’s hard to watch a video looking through a key hole
We do apologize as this maybe a setting on your computer.
Awful stuff. Prayers from Texas. Sent what we could your way.
Thank you!
Heading down to ft Myers with gas and water in the am.
Stay safe and thank you for what you are doing!
@@Saltstrong it was hard man. I live in Dunedin and it’s crazy to see how close we came. Infrastructure is wiped out. I’m heading back down Wednesday with a lot more gas and water. Thinking about picking up a couple hundred chic fil a sandwiches for all the guys in uniform. They could use something more than a granola bar or two.
@@Saltstrong I’m regrouping tomorrow and forming a better plan. Unfortunately I had to leave because I would’ve run out of gas myself. Didn’t even make it to health park. Let me know if you want to be a part of it.
I fish those docks once a week man I hate seeing this.
We agree!
Have you seen/ heard how cabbage key is?
We have not at this time.
