  • Hey guys please check out my first ever reaction to English Reggae Pop band UB40 and their song Can't help falling in love which was a remake of the original by Elvis Presley. Being Jamaican I'm surprised I've never heard of them before but they did not disappoint! check out my reaction and let me know what you think. Drop some more ub40 songs in the comments that you think I should react to! Oh and I know you guys see my video editing skills gradually improving!

Over in UK, we love music. Nothing to do with who, where they are from, if we love your music, it would be played. I grew up between Nigeria and UK, mainly Nigeria but full music influence from UK where I was born. We listen to everything here and both black and white folks enjoy raggae. Bob Marley, UB40, Third World are my introduction and these songs would have been in the charts at the time. We will dance to Kool and the gang, disco and if UB40 comes on still dance. UK chart is much more eclectic. I love music from opera, classical, techno, garage, hip hop, drum and bass, heavy metal, rap (90s not the new ones), etc.
Have you reacted to Queen yet?

Thanks for explaining how things are here in the UK. Like most people growing up here we listened to whatever was in the charts, so a complete mixed bag of music, I'm grateful of that cos I have a wider knowledge of the variety of music than being pigeon holed into certain categories. For me it was listening to my parents music from the 50's onwards, rock, pop, blues, motown, reggae, soul etc. Forgot disco lol

You're right (I think so), UB40 brings reggae to the charts in the eighties and nineties and to Europe in a "popy" way. And thanks to bands like them people gets to Marley & the Wailers, Lee Scratch Perry, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, etc just like Massive Attack showed us the LEGEND Horace Andy.
Music spreads culture and tears down frontiers.

The ethnic blend of the group is more than just one token black guy.
They were a group of unemployed friends who whilst unemployed decided to start a group. Most had to learn their instruments from scratch and I believe self taught. Their earlier music was a little darker and less poppy. I first heard them do 1 in 10 which is the number unemployed at that time in the 80s under Margaret thatcher. As previously said Their name was the application form for unemployment benefit. Great sound. Love them.

I'm a fan of reggae so I can see questioning the genre. The beat (timing) here is unique to reggae music. There first big song was to cover Red, Red Wine which is more recognizable as a reggae song. Using reggae "beats" to "pump up" slower rhythm, check out Killing Me Softly by the Fugees and Lauren Hill. This one uses reggae and rap to revamp an R&B favorite.
