  • @katrinacash6393
    @katrinacash6393 Před měsícem +135

    USA For Africa was a fundraiser single for famine relief in Africa. The song was written by Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson. The project was started by Harry Belafonte in response to the British charity song "Do They Know It's Christmas" with British artists. So many of these legends are no longer with us now. This song never fails to stir me! There is a full documentary here on CZcams about the making of this video. It happened after an awards show and that's why all of the artists were together. Quincy Jones put a sign on the door that told the artists to "leave their egos at the door". Even if you don't react to it I recommend watching it.

    Netflix has a documentary on this, "The Greatest Night In Pop," that lays out how they did this and got people to show up. They picked the night of the AMAs (American Music Awards) to record, luring the stars (from many genres) since they were already at the awards. It's an interesting story that explains what went on and the hoops they had to jump through to get the song written and recorded.

    Bob Geldof, a British musician (his band was called. Boomtown Rats) saw news footage of drought and famine that struck Ethiopia. He was moved to do something to help the people of Ethiopia. He got together with Midge Ure of the band Ultravox and in the space of less than two months they coordinated musicians, got a song written and recorded it in time for Christmas. The song was called “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The song was a massive hit and proceeds went to help Ethiopia. Watch that video. They grabbed anyone that was in London at the time to sing and record the video. Kool & The Gang happened to be in London and even they are in the video. After seeing what the Brits pulled off, Harry Belafonte decided that the Americans needed to help as well. Collaborating with Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and MJ, they got to writing. They decided the only way to get all those famous people together was after the American Music Awards show. After the awards they all filed into the music studio to record. The one artist who refused to participate was Prince (but he contributed a song to the album). Other reactors have asked why wasn’t Whitney Houston there. She isn’t in this because nobody knew who she was yet. Her first hit came a few months later (although her auntie, Dionne Warwick, is singing in the video.) Famously, there was a sign put on the entrance saying “check your egos at the door.” We Are The World was a massive hit. The heavy metal community felt slighted because they weren’t asked to participate. Ronnie James Dio (one of the best voices to ever exist in any genre), put together a heavy metal version called Stars (also worth watching). The union of massive stars to support a cause set the ball rolling for Live Aid, a massive one day music festival on 2 continents. London and Philadelphia were the stages. Live Aid was simulcast on MTV, ABC, and radio stations and other outlets across the globe. This concert paved the way for Farm Aid, which was a gathering of mostly country artists to raise money to help America’s farmers, most of whom live in poverty. There have been updated versions of We Are The World for different causes over the years.

    JAMES INGRAM! Hes the singer there towards the end who was singing with Ray Charles and you asked Who that is. He was the pinnacle of 80s and early 90s slow R&B, he sang with so much emotion and power, and could go from high to low to high to low again in a single phrase, and make it sound like the smoothest thing you've ever heard. He was protege to Quincy Jones, the legendary producer who made We Are the World become reality, and Ingram was essentially Jones's instrument of choice for the male voice. He had some classic hits from the 80s, my favorite is "Just Once" but also "Find 100 Ways" and his amazing duets with Michael McDonald ("Yah Mo B There"), Dolly Parton ("The Day I Fall in Love"), and Linda Ronstadt ("Somewhere Out There", from the movie An American Tail.)

    There were 44 artists all told to leave the egos at the door -- they all did just that to come together to make this music! The man standing next to Tina Turner that you asked about is James Ingram. He is lost to us now, but you may want to check out his duet with Linda Ronstadt ("Somewhere Out There"). He did make some beautiful music and left us way too soon. By the way, you mentioned your sons. They are so fortunate to have a dad to bring so much music into their lives!

    The song: Do They Know it's Christmas
    It gave the U.S. the idea and they came up with USA for Africa which led to Bob Geldoff of the The Boomtown Rats to create a benefit concert Live Aid (a 12 hour concert held on 2 continents: Philadelphia PA and London England, watch by 1 billion people all over the world)

    Part of my research on this has told me that others were invited to join in this, but walked out when they found out what it was for. Quincy Jones is the one who pulled it together with Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie being the writers. Absolutely moving for those who are willing to listen to something other than "shake your butt stuff".

    Great reaction! I didn't go thru all the comments, but there is an updated version of this song that was done on the 25th anniversary in 2010. It has current artists at that time singing the parts with a new added verse. It would be worth checking out as well as Do They know it's Christmas from British artists and Tears are not Enough done by Canadian artists! There is also a metal band contribution but I dont remember the song name! These were all great contributions to end world hunger and provide famine relief. It was actually what started the idea for The Live Aid concert about 6 months later. People working together like they should for the good of all humans. ❤❤❤❤❤
