A friend lent me his 8-year old Jag for a month recently. After a few days I found my personality had changed: I drove faster, I enjoyed overtaking for the first time in 45 years of driving, I didn’t need to be comforted by background music, I really enjoyed the tight turning circle, etc. It felt like a very powerful comfortable old fashioned saloon car… Many years ago I was a passenger in Austria as a young teenager and fell in love with Mercedes taxis… until my recent encounter with a Jaaaaagh!
I just bought a 3.0 V6 XF... now that's some Jaaaaag!!! It's elegant and gentlemanly until you flick the sport and dynamic mode on and then it turns into a mentalist! ......God I love my JAAAAG!!
Ditto. Even better with the S version. It took me 6 months to realise I could drive it in sorts mode and dynamic mode and get the fancy display up and manually control the upshifts and hold it on the red line....
I would have said this was all tar-brushing tosh.... except that when my best mate got a Jaaaag he started wearing Arfur Daley's coat and rocked up with a girlfriend ten years younger. wtf? And to top it all, when someone pulled out in front of him on the main road, he took no damage but wrote their car off. "I'm terribly sorry, I seem to have have torn the front end off your Renault... with my Jaaaag".
So I was in the army, at Fort Ord, California, when i could afford a car. Monterey Car Company had a 1957 XK-140, for about $1300.00 dollars. And, the dealer said, it was once owned by Kim Novak, who lived next door, in Carmel. It had a three-point racing harness, unheard of in the day, which told me that it was probably not owned by Kim, and that it was probably very well-used. So, since the US Army owned the Laguna Seca race track, and allowed racing once a year (this was 1960) I was convinced by my fellow lieutenants that I should enter the Pro-Am race. Now the golfers had a pro-am tournament at the Bing Crosby Open, so the SCAA something like that) allowed as to how they would allow amateurs to race alongside the pros. So we ran to the cars, and within seconds I was passed by two Ferrraris, and scared out of my mind. Then it occurred to me that I was probably the only racer paying for his own fenders,, as I was pushed into the rail, and I retired after one lap, having spent most of my Dunlop racing tires, and I quit racing forever. But I was next stationed to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and had to drive through Reno, where I had a service at the Bill Harrah garage. They saw the stickers and said I could drive their North American Racing Team Ferrari car. It had only three gauges. Oil pressure, water temperature, and a big tach, with grease pencil markings for the gear changes. I declined,, but the, as I made my way across America, wherever I stopped, people would stop. And they would look, and they would touch. Maybe it was the numbers. Maybe it was the stickers. Maybe it was the carbon streaks along the sides. Anyway, it was the best car I ever owned. And that is why I later got an E-Type and ran it in Europe. And you know? everyone liked those cars. And I wish I had them today..
Bill, I had similar experiences with my ‘67 E-Type Roadster. Sold it 1983 when the Army sent me along with my wife and 1 1/2 year old son to Germany. Could only take one car and it was hard to get two adults and a car seat for the young one in a two seat car. Had that car at Fort Ord in the late ‘70s. Everyone loved it.

I've had BMW's for 7 years and love them. Great drivers cars and practical. Now got an XF. I was worried about it not being as much fun to drive. No problem there, it handels like a much smaller car. However, its the feeling of being behind the wheel that is way superior in the Jag, in my opinion, a much nicer place to be than a Beemer! Well done Jaguar, keep up the great work....

They started off well bringing out the iPace well before most of their competitors then sat back and let the whole industry pass them by. I think if both these companies don’t get their “fingers out”, and sort their sh1t out, they are going to struggle in the next few years.

I remember a Jaguar advertisement I saw a few years back that had like 4 big name British actors who always play rich, stylish villains in it. Then I heard how they pronounced the name of the car; not "Jag-wire" like we do in the states, but "Jag-you-are". Haven't been able to pronounce it the American way since. I've been trying for like three years. Just can't do it in two syllables anymore.

When I was in school I loved the old Jags- had a 120 FHC, a 140 and joined the local club in Seattle. There were a lot of sports car clubs back then, the MG club, the Healey, Triumph etc., but the Jag club was humbly named "The Jaguar Driver's Club of Northwest America". A lot of the owners were pilots or engineers at Boeing, so they had that fastidious tendency. I remember there was a pecking order in those days as well. When you would encounter another sports car on the road you would waive, but the lower ranks had to waive first before the upper folks would acknowledge.

One of my many bosses had restored an E-Type. Well one day he brought his pride and joy into the works and took pride in taking each employee for a spin.
