    I have several Rolex watches that have bought over last few years but think the reason Rolex are so successful is marketing. They are well made watches and I like them, but the unusually high level of demand is driven by a lot of status symbol seekers rather than purely watch enthusiasts. Rolex and Patek find themselves in a unique market position. They can charge whatever they like and no longer has a correlation to value and worth. In fact the more they charge the more demand will rise. This is a dangerous long term strategy as the price hikes will come back to bite them when at some point in time a natural market adjustment occurs.

      It is THE luxury watch of the mass populace. The general public knows nothing about the wide spectrum of watch manufacturers and quality, of which Rolex is one of many, but the only one known by the masses. This is the primary reason for the inability to simply go buy the Rolex of your choice or at a reasonable cost.

On chrono24 there are 355 ceramic pepsi gmt's ( that is not a rare watch) they are selling between €14000 to €24000 . The watch retails at €9000

    Another great video my man. I'm guessing we'll never see your face on your videos. Why is that? on the basis of a cancelled BaselWorld and a coronavirus which is killing the Chinese consumption of anything conspicuous I called the AD in Lyon, France yesterday. Specifically to try and get a Hulk. He didn't have one, nor a regular Sub, nor a GMT in either of these versions above and anything else under about €15000. He also very politely said he couldn't take any orders at present and has nothing on back order coming through! So I asked him put my name down for a Hulk or the new version if they do one, or a base Subby non date as and when they appear. I don't expect to hear back from him.

      Well clearly demand is going to be down right now, but that would only help you in getting one of the desirable Rolex's if the supply has not changed. Unfortunately though the pandemic may also be impacting production output and distribution as well. Many factories are shut now, is Rolex even still running through this? Who knows...

    Well said. Rolex has become nearly predictable now. I bought a GMT yesterday. I went for the Everose/Oystersteel. I felt a bit of urgency to grab it although it's probably the least popular sport watch in the entire Rolex line up. I love the jubilee bracelet but for this watch, for my style, the oyster is a better and more versetile choice. For me personally. Urgency because I believe this version will get the jubilee very soon if it stays in the line up which would surprise me. If it does stay, I expect that bracelet change and maybe a brown sunburst dial. Great vid! Cheers.

    Sure, if it’s the Batman then the movement and bracelet is different. But if compared to a car, you can buy the same car with different engines (equivalent to a watch’s movement). And it’s still the same car but with difference in engines. And the bracelet would be like a cars wheels. Put a GMT Master 2 on a NATO and it’s still a GMT Master 2.
    And if compared to the Batgirl then it’s exactly the same watch, just with different paint 😉

    Rolex makes great watches, they're simple and solid, but they're definitely not worth the price, both directly from the ad or on the grey market, they've become so well know and successful due to their marketing and this justified their price increases since the prices from the late 90s to early 2000s are what they're worth spending on.

    I wish the automobile industry would take its cue from Rolex, small improvements instead of new designs every 2 to 3 years. The only problem I see for Rolex is that waiting list. Every generation is more impatient than its predecessor; and, in the meantime, the design and quality of Rolex's competitors' gets better and better.

    Seriously though I love that Batman and those colors. I have never warmed up to the new Pepsi though. Both the red and blue just seem off and muted to me compared to the lovely colors of the older GMT's. As for me... I purchased a 16710 pre-ceramic GMT. I think the lugs just look so much better. Plus I can switch out the bezel as much as I like to different colors, but to be honest I guess I'm boring because I like the plain black.

    Slow evolution? No. It's just simply marketing and business strategy. There's nothing evolutionary about the same watch with just a color change. If watch people would step out of a perspective of a watch enthusiast and just see the watches as they are without the saturation of the marketing schemes of the brands and companies, well you wouldn't worship every little thing Rolex does like it's bigger than what it is. You'd see things as is. Just a brilliant / smart business strategy and marketing of Rolex. Which resonates with the watch world. Because well elitism, exclusivity, luxury branding, expensive schemes are the only thing that keeps the mechanical watch world going. Which of course they had to do what they could to get through the hard times when the practical, more reliable and better in every way at a very low cost, quartz watches appeared. I love mechanical watches, but I'm just tired of most of the watch community worshiping every little thing Rolex and others do. Someone who have even a drop of sense in marketing / branding / design / watchmaking knows what's up. These watches and companies aren't priced by just pure craftsmanship, etc. Yes, they are amazing but if you just step outside the single vision watch enthusiasts' bubble, you'd see things as is. Without getting caught up in what they want you to think. Nothing against Rolex, etc. They have smart marketing ever since their early years, and single visioned consumers like you who get caught up in their marketing is what makes them able to just inflate their prices, limit their production, limit their new designs, limit their models, etc. I also have nothing against you sir. You have a nice channel. Please bear with me, I'm just a bit tired of over worshipping and seeing these watches as if they are mind blowing or at least like you said are some kind of "evolution", etc. They are simply smart marketing and branding.

      Fully agree. Rolex, while an excellent Swiss manufacturer, somehow, somewhere became the only known luxury watch of worldwide buyers and most do not care nor realize there are other manufacturers with much longer histories. Rather simple, but such a clear illustration of herd behavior. A dynamic most will never acknowledge because ego serves as a primary if not sole motivation.

      2 tone root beer is the most sophisticated GMT Master. Batman and Pepsi are too childish))

    Well, the Rolex quality is there and the mechanicals are sound, but that jubilee looks all wrong on a sports piece. Stick with fluted bezels Rolex, it just doesn’t work. Oyster all week long and twice on Sundays. But, if it floats your boat, happy sailing!

      @dstfno Před 4 lety +2

      the Epster the GMT isn’t really a sports piece like the submariner or Daytona. It was made for pilots and (business) travelers and meant to be worn with a uniform or suit. That’s why the original came on a jubilee.

      dstfno Rolex are not immune for getting it wrong. Just look at the YachtMaster II. No further questions your honour.

    I wouldn't exactly say that it was quality that made rolex a luxury brand. There are tons of rolexes out there sold as new with scratches on the hands, uneven paint on the gmt hand, that is not what i call quality. Rolex is a tool watch, that if bought for a premium, then becomes a tool's watch
