"mad as a hatter" (i.e.demented) is an old expression connected to the hat making trade which involved the use of mercury .This resulted in some peculiar behaviors related to the degree of exposure to it's toxic effects. Love this song, one of my favorites!

Elton John fan since 1972. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, and Levon, are my two favorite EJ songs. The songwriting team of Elton John's music and Bernie Taupin's lyrics will be remembered in the ages.

An often overlooked masterpiece from the Elton John/Bernie Taupin catalogue. Elton is a master of melody and arrangements.

A top favorite song for me! Kudos to Davey Johnstone on the mandolin and kudos for working the mandolin into the arrangement. Mandolin was not an instrument heavily used outside of bluegrass back in the early 70s, so this tune is always an extra special treat for me!

If you read those lyrics without the music, you wonder how Elton made them fit the music, but he has such great phrasing and timing that he can make it work perfectly.

Elton once said he'd spend 1/2 hour working on finding tunes to fit the lyrics, then if nothing by then he'd toss it and move on to the next set of lyrics.

I discovered this tune, by the film "Almost Famous" in 2000, now a favorite. Elton's music, and Bernie's lyrics, and the the band,..."I thank the people for,/the dark outside or light."
When I get back to France, I know where the actual Honky Chateau is, recorded where others did brilliant music was, I will go and bow in gratitude .

"Mona Lisa's and mad haters.....". LOVED it. What a great laugh I had. You are not the first nor the second to mis-read that, so totally understandable and no pride lost.
    Let the music play.

Mad hatters not haters! Another smooth one by Bernie and Elton with great vocals and master piano playing! I love both Stevie Wonder and Elton . I give an edge to Elton because of so many great albums early in his career with incredible orchestration and production. Bernie’s lyrics rival some of the best by Stevie too.

I have liked Elton John's music since I first heard 'Your Song' long ago. I have seen him in concert quite a few times and still have nearly all his albums.... One of my favorite performing artists. Every member of his band is great, as well.

  • @wpollock1

Beautiful deep cut by Elton which has a better message than more of his more "pop" hits. What a great melody! As for Stevie? He is above ANYONE....he has more soul in his voice than everyone else.
An analysis of the meaning of the song:
"In the chorus, John sings, “And I thank the lord for the people I have found” - an acknowledgment of the people who have touched his heart and changed his perspective. The Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters he refers to in the song are a metaphor for the different types of identities that exist within the city. Mona Lisas are the personas that represent beauty, glamour, and wealth. Mad Hatters, on the other hand, are those who are struggling, unique, and often misunderstood.
The song’s poignant line, “Subway’s no way for a good man to go down” is a reference to one of the album’s most poignant tracks - ‘Rocket Man’. But here, rather than celebrating the wonders of space travel, John laments the way that New York’s underground transport system can be an unwelcoming and hostile environment for people who are down on their luck or struggling to make ends meet." I think this is a good review of Bernie Taupin"s lyrics given to Elton.

100% excellent track. A bit of a deep cut (one of my favorite Elton songs) that references the classic Ben E King song "Spanish Harlem". Bernie was very familiar with the tune, and was shocked to see the reality of it on his first trip to NYC.

Elton John’s best work was 1971-1975. You must react to 1971 Album - Madman Across the Water, which was his first full work and long-partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin:
    Madman Across the Water
    Levon
    Indian Sunset
    Tiny Dancer

I had Honky Chateau on 8 track for about a year before I actually listened to this song. Kept skipping over it to relisten to other more popular songs on this album. Accidentally let it play and it's been one of my favorite Elton John songs ever since.
I love his album and especially the title song, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. I don't remember if it was as successful as his other work, but it's still a great song and album. The Bitch is Back is another great tune by Elton.

This is a very good song that might be called a deep cut - anyway, it wasn't a single. I recommend "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" for your next Elton song. I agree that Elton was a very good singer, but not quite top 10 for me. The main things that made him great were his song writing, piano playing, and willingness to try a variety of styles.

To be honest with you the Lyrics were a big part of the success of Elton's songs Elton's lyrist Bernie Taupin made the Songs magical too, ask any Elton fan. Elton John gave high acclaim to Stevie Wonder's LP Songs in The Key of Life. If you would listen to that LP you made see what I mean, Check it out, man

It's so sad that this whole new generation doesn't read books..Mad hatters is an expression from old england about crazy behavior..Intelligence and creative thinking are disappearing. Everything has been reduced to memes and sound bites..
