    I remember seeing a documentary about the making of this album. Elton wrote this song in about 25 minutes. He just reads the lyrics & starts playing. It's crazy watching a genius at work.

      I remember seeing that documentary piece on tv shortly after this album came out. A good part of that hour show was spent on him taking Danny Baily from Bernie Taupin's lyrics to completion. And like you pointed out, he wrote the song in no time. It was a very good documentary that still sticks in my memory 50 years later.

    Bernie Taupin in the lyricist. They never work in the same room at the same time. Bernie gives him a stack of lyrics and Elton does his magic. Totally unique songwriting technique.

    Danny Bailey, the made-up gangster, was not only violent, but a bootlegger running sales of illegal whiskey during Prohibition. The last 3 years of his life (the character "died" in 1933) would have coincided with the beginning of the Depression, which is why the reference to him as a "hungry kid" and the love for him held by his fellow Kentuckians who he supported by giving the products of their stills a market. All of which explains the expressions of sympathy toward Danny. If you read up on the history of the high profile gangsters who operated during that era you'll get a clearer understanding of this song. BTW - I usually hate pauses during reactions, but when you pause to dig into the lyrics it shows you actually care about the song, so it is not only tolerable but appreciated...by me, at least!

    Each song on this album is intended to be a "mini-movie" or vignette story. The intent is for you to paint a picture in your mind and then have an emotional reaction to solidify the overall concept of the song. Unlike many "concept albums" where a single concept is shared by all the songs on the album, the "concept" of this album is that each song is its own individual concept. GENIUS if you ask me.

    Fantastic reactions Silas. Your comments and facial expressions had me laughing my ass off at times! 😂 Bernie Taupin is one of the greatest ever pop/rock lyricists. He can tear your heart out with tender lyrics and can make you sit up with social observations. He has an awesome turn of phrase that stops you in your tracks as you have experienced in this album. Then Elton receives the lyrics through the post and writes a melody and arrangement that captures it. Genius!

      All true though their best albums together with great orchestrations and musical directing were done one Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, Honky Cat Chateau, Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player, and his self titled Elton John album. Those had better connection to each song.

    Danny Bailey was fictional name created by Bernie Taupin, but the person was real, probably a pseudonym for American gangster John Dillinger, or a personification of the gangsters of that era, the 1920's/'30's...

    The Ballad of Danny Bailey is one of my all time favorite songs. I loved it when it came out, never get tired of listening to it, on my playlist still. Danny Bailey was a bootlegger in the prohibition time, he talked about Kentucky, probably made homemade whiskey. Maybe a bit of a local gangster?

    A Subway in the UK is not a train, but an underground passage to cross a street or similar. You must see that these lyrics are Bernies, who was a teenager when he began writing the words that Elton then put the musuc to. Much of it reflects his childhood watching western movies & TV shows. Bernie grew up in a small rural town in the English countryside, while Elton liived un a London suburb.

    This song encapsulates why elton is/was so great. He could take a poem of a few words, and turn it into an epic story. And allows the other band members to shine in that rocking out-tro, which really makes up nearly half the track. That thumping bass guitar never wavers, a great string arrangement, and Reg doing his magic on the keys. outstanding ! (re: Danny Bailey)

    Nice reaction to each song Silas. Just a note about the research on All the Girls Love Alice: you read that it was the first song Elton did about a gay character. It actually wasn’t.
    The first song Bernie wrote about a gay character was a song on the Madman Across the Water album from 1971. The song is on side two and is called All the Nasties. Bernie wrote it about Elton and is asking what would happen if he came out to the public and the press and how they would react to the news.

    Hey, Silas, I know I've already suggested Rainbow and more Queen but out of all the guitar gods you've already reacted to, have you listened to any Eric Clapton? You should go back to the 60's soon and react to Cream, they only made a few album because of tension in the group between Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker and did one last reunion/farewell at the Royal Albert Hall in 2005. Great psychedelic songs, Sunshine of your love is my favorite to play on guitar, easy too.

  • @WouldThat
    @WouldThat Před 9 měsíci +4

    Hi Silas. Great Content. Something to note when you feel cringe from these lyrics. This LP is meant to be an edgy piece of work form Elton & Bernie. Bernie's more 'out there' ideas are not him lashing out in mean and disrespectful ways. Dirty Little Girl, for example, is written from the point of view of a character in Bernie's imagination observing a degenerate woman and ranting about her. So, the song is about 2 imaginary characters, not just one. A lot of songs are like that...a poetic license to say something about society through the eyes of someone whom you might not approve of. A great song like this will also make you question, "Do I agree with this awful narrator a little bit?" Steely Dan lyrics rely heavily on this technique...the narrator seldom seems the same person from song to song. In case you aren't already a Steely Dan Fan, the joy, the complexity, the unusual characters and brilliant metaphors of Countdown to Ecstasy, Katy Lied, Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho will keep you coming back for decades. Where to start? Aja is masterpiece of songwriting, studio production and engineering. However, the rocking guitar epics are on Countdown to Ecstasy.

    • @markharris1125
      @markharris1125 Před 8 měsíci

      You're being very kind about Dirty Little Girl. In a sense most songs are from a narrator's point of view. Here, it has always rubbed me the wrong way. Elton turns those words into a great song, but I think it's nasty. Sorry.

      I mean, where is the fictional character? If it was, say, his Pa who warned him about this girl, if it was Pa who said "I'm gonna put buckshot on HER pants" - and then at the end they have twenty grandchildren and she's still his dirty little girl - well, that would work.

    The album is mostly meant to be fun full of comic book characters. Most are fictional. Don’t try and read too much into it and the album flows if you just let it play without overthinking it. Bernie Taupin is Elton’s songwriting partner. Elton writes the music and melody and Bernie the lyrics.
