Your reactions to this album have warmed my heart. ❤ As you've discovered, Elton John is far from a one trick pony as if he mainly does ballads. You rightly pointed out how diverse his repertoire is on just one album. Not only is it remarkable that this quality is reproduced across all sides of this double album. Also bear in mind that this was his second album of 1973! "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player" was released just 9 months earlier and is also worthy of a reaction!

Personally, I always liked this song "Roy Rogers" - a top song from this LP for me. Roy Rogers was your classic 'good guy' cowboy. I used to watch him on tv when I was a kid, This story of a man finding comfort in watching Roy Rogers late at night, alone, seems so real. A man bored by his life's routines, re-watching his childhood good-guy hero - it's touching, it's sentimental, it's sad and it's joyous at the same time. Aren't people interesting? "Sometimes you dream - sometimes it seems - there's nothing there at all..."

Harmony was never released as a single but DJ’s liked the song and started playing it and it was a particularly popular with top 40 stations on the East Coast circa 1974. MCA was going to release it as an official single after Bennie and the Jets but Bennie went to number one and had long legs. So Harmony was never released as the record label wanted to release Elton’s new single off the new album Caribou, which was released just 6 months after GBYBR. The single from Caribou that was released was the classic The Bitch is Back. Elton released two albums each year between 1971- 1976. He had 7 number one albums in the USA back to back.

I know just how you felt during those last few glorious seconds of "Harmony". It was a pleasure getting to watch you (and getting to relive my own memories of the first time I heard this record). Very curious what your favorites will end up being. Expect this will be an album that you might appreciate more (and differently) with time.
He's got so many great albums, but I think "Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy" would be a perfect next step for you. It tells a cohesive story of how Elton & Bernie began working together writing songs, and it also happens to be one of their most magical efforts. You can tell each song means the world to Elton.

I have been listening to this album, on vinyl, for 50 years, now, and the music still sounds as fresh and relevant today as it did in 1973.
Note that 1973 is, in my opinion, the best year for Rock music. Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John and Selling England By the Pound by Genesis are the highlights for me, but Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Wings and so many pre-Disco Soul artists released some of their greatest albums in this year. (I hated Disco, still do.) Roxy Music, Brian Eno, Paul Simon, and a lot of singer-songwriters were brilliant in '73, too, such as Gordon Lightfoot.

Roy Rogers was America's Singing Cowboy. His horse was named Trigger and his wife was Dale Evans. She was an actress, singer and songwriter. She was Roy's 3rd wife, but they were married for 50 years, until Roy died in 1998. She passed just 3 years later.

Yes, it's a great album. If you want to hear another Elton album, I recommend Honky Chateau. I'd say it's not as good as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, but it's still a very good album. For an individual song, try "Someone Saved My Life Tonight". You should also check out Billy Joel, who like Elton John is a pianist, is very tuneful, and does a wide variety of styles. If you start with an album, it should be The Stranger. If you start with a song, "Piano Man" is probably the one.

This is probably one of the best albums ever made. For me, it defined my teens. Elton was simply on fire in the mid 70's. I've heard "Saturday Nights alright for Fighting" described as the best Rolling Stones song never recorded by the Rolling Stones. Lol! I think Elton and his band closed a lot of their shows with that song and it could sometimes go on for a go 15 or 20 minutes as they played it with abandon...

The Twist was a new dance craze in the early 60's, but was past by 1970, by which older people had taken to it. Elton was trained in piano at the Royal academy if Music un London, so new all the classics, & Classical music.

Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics for virtually all of Elton's classic songs and fancied himself something of a cowboy. That explains the tribute of "Roy Rogers" and the later autobiographical album, "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy," which came out at the peak of Elton's career in 1975 and is worth a listen.

Take my word on this - listen to Extreme "III Sides to Every Story" front to back. One of my top 5 fave albums of all time. Bernie writes a lot of great fictional stories but if you want to hear some non- fiction lyrics check out "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy." It's the autobiographical album of he and Elton's story up to that point. It was the first LP ever to debut on the Billboard Top 100 at #1. Elton has called it "the finest album I've ever made by far." It only had one single released off it, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", but it's an absolute gut wrencher.
