When I was about 10yo, I wrote a fanfic of the Mario universe. It was largely unchanged from canon, but I considerably changed the tone by adding realistic psychology to the events of the world. People fearing death, a deeper look into the war and what exactly Bowser wants Peach for, etc. I found the story about a decade ago as a young adult and could not believe how dark and, honestly, quite realistic and deep the story was for something written as fanfic of a children's game when I was a child. The Mario universe really is a much darker place than the upbeat music gives credit. No wonder Mario never speaks.

yeah since if a fan animation is based on something kid friendly, coppa will mark it for kids no matter how much swearing and dark themes

That video was made a century before anybody felt like the internet was in danger for anything.
2:40 to make things just a bit darker, we only ever saw one baby goomba land on Lawrence, so we don’t know what happened to the rest. It’s clear landing on Lawrence makes the sound, and we don’t hear any more even while Daniel and Caroline are talking, so no one else landed on Lawrence’s shell

Man these are dark moments for Bowser’s minions
Subtle and definitely unintended detail about the caste destruction one: Green Koopa is headstrong and dashes to his doom come hell or high water. Red Koopa goes back and fourth… I love it.
I've got two episodes to replace mating habits in the mushroom kingdom. (more gross than dark TBH)
These are my personal favorite episodes.
