- Subway tile shower stall time lapse start to finish. This video shows the installation of a complete shower stall and bathroom floor, from the installation of the shower floor mud to the grouting of the subway tile and the mosaic tile floor. Water proofing is an essential part of a shower enclosure, and should not be omitted. In this case the backer board was Denshield, so only the corners and seams where coated with a liquid waterproofing membrane. The mud was installed over a copper pan and the tile was installed with a polymer modified thinset, mastic should never be used in a wet area. A Noble Niche was also installed. The wall tile is a six inch by three inch subway tile, installed on a running bond pattern, the shower floor and the main bathroom floor is a hexagonal mosaic tile. The ceiling tile is a six inch square ceramic tile.
How to install mud in a shower pan for a tile shower stall. When installing a tile shower, whether it be ceramic, marble travertine or any other tile product, a mud base will be required. Mud also known as deck mud, is a mixture of sand and Portland cement mixed to a ratio that will create a solid foundation for the tile which will be installed on it. The deck mud is mixed with water to a dump consistence which will allow the deck mud to hold its shape when pressed into a ball. The mud must be pitcher towards the drain so that a slope of at least ¼" per foot is achieved. The ratio of sand and Portland cement is usually 4:1 or 5:1. I usually use "Quikrete" sand topping mix, which as far as I know, has a ratio which is a little richer than needed, but is suitable for a shower pan. The method I employ to install my mud in shower pan, is to create a level and flat perimeter around the base of the shower walls which is at the correct height in relation to the drain, and then fill the middle part of the shower pan screeding down to the drain with the proper pitch. The mud is shaped with a wooden trowel, steel trowel, level and other pieces of straight wood lengths cut to the required lengths. In this video I demonstrate the technique I use to install a shower mud pan base. There are other methods that can be used, but this is the way I have installed hundreds of shower bases. How to grout a ceramic tile floor, step by step, this video is intended to be a guideline on how to grout a ceramic tile floor. This is how I do it and what I have found to be the simplest and quickest way to grout You will need a rubber float, a couple of buckets, a margin trowel for mixing your grout, and some rubber gloves. Mix your grout according to the direction of the grout you are using. Once the grout is ready, I find the best way to grout a tile floor is to spread the grout with the rubber float while holing it at a very low angle to the floor and pushing the grout into the lines while applying a good amount of pressure. Once you have filled the lines go over the same area with the float at a very high angle in order to remove all the excess grout and leave the grout lines filled with the proper amount of grout. Let stand for a period of time, then with a grout sponge and a bucket of clean cold water, work the grout lines with the sponge. The sponge should have as little water as possible not dripping or soaked. At this point the goal is to shape the grout lines not clean the tile. Once this is accomplished, the next step is to clean the tile. Again with a damp sponge and clean water, place the sponge on the tile, with even pressure pull the sponge in one direction only, lift the sponge flip to the other side repeat, rinse and repeat until the grouted section is clean. Once the whole floor is grouted and cleaned in this fashion, wait until the floor dries to a haze, and rinse again.

Sal I have been watching all your videos in the mornings to motivate me for the tile jobs I have been working on during the day. I have been using your tips and just thinking about you as I tile. I am not a contractor so not lots of money like most professional tile people. I bought you some coffee but just THANK YOU! People like you are the reason we have a nice world to live in!
Thanks, I really appreciate that.😊
awesome, I just finished my first floor tile job and am about to start a tub/shower surround. Thanks for sharing.
Sal ive been watching your videos since i was getting into tile. Im now a full time tiler and am honored to understand how amazing you are! Keep up the good work, much gratitude from Maine.
Your videos are awesome. You've helped me through my first mud pre-slope and I'm going to start tiling soon. Your videos give me confidence!

Always a pleasure to see your work and watch the job to completion.
Oh how I wish I had found your videos BEFORE doing my tiling. I worked out how to do things, but it was a real labour of love.
Finally someone who does a old school mud pan w no pre slope underneath . Maybe I'm old school too but I love this method best .loved how u set up your leads too
i've tiled my kitchen floor with the hex and am tiling one kitchen wall and the back splash with the subway tile. i'm just belly aching over the dry fitting and the measuring for tile cutting. i'm super impressed at the timely manner in which you not only cut the tiles as you go, but are quick and accurate and, well, efficient. you inspire me!!
I have a few years of experiance under my belt. Lay out some tiles on the floor so that you can use as a reference for measuring, or make a story ploe which is just a long stick with markings to represent individual tiles, or do both.
Sal....love the videos love your work and the attitude you have toward the people that feel the need to tell you how to do something different / better. I have installed my own tile shower using your videos. Shower turned out great......thank you.
i always admire your works, paying attention to details.thanks for the vids
You do nice work..love the constant cleaning..shows you care to keep the customers property in good shape
Amazing skills with great techniques.thank you sal for bettering our trade!
Dude your so fast. Awesome tile job Sal.

Incredible work! You are very talented at your craft! Thank you for sharing.
AMAZING! LOVE your approach to subway tile laying, I am a First Time DIY gal. But even I noticed the spacing is built into the tile!!! No need for all the extra effort of spacing when the mud is spread proper and you understand the goal!
And also have renewed faith in the small format mosaics.. I have seen so many sloppy jobs where you can see the square edge of each sheet of tile. But obviously dragging across the previously laid tile until it magically falls into place as well as your "leveling" pressing into mud technique, just presents an amazing cohesive look!
Thanks, glad it helped
I watch your videos all the time , great tips and how toos . I strive to do things your way and it makes my boss ecstatic and got me a healthy raise as well ,thanks sal!!
Keep up the good work, good for you on the raise.
i appreciate the enlightenment, thanks again for all of the videos i look forward to the next one!
Master of your trade for sure. Great bathroom
Nice, clean. Great job Sal.
Great looking work, thanks for sharing!
Nice! Thank you for showing this.
Beautiful work.
Man, I trully envy how handy you are. I am planning to do something simullar and can only wish for a half as good outcome, compare to what you have done.
Definitely worth 20 minutes of my time. Great work.

Beautiful work. I wish i could time as fast as you! I have to do 2 pre fab pan showers, 1 full custom with a pan, and 2 more bathroom floors.
So you add little wedge spacers to re-level the horizontal lines? What a great idea
The Rockwell cutter tool is the most useful tool I have bought, so handy, I use it a lot ....great video as usual thank you for the knowledge I've gained from watching most of your videos, cheers from Windsor Ontario Canada :-)
Sir
Thank you very much for this kind of information
great video, looks great.
you make it look so easy. great vid
Ovo je super za one koji žele raditi sami.
Beautiful work!
Nice job and interesting to see how things are done elsewhere in the world. Viewers should always appreciate that codes vary (wildly) depending on different countries and regions and even expert tilers like Sal may be demonstrating techniques not applicable to the viewers' part of the world. Much of that job for example wouldn't have passed code here in Australia. That doesn't make the job "wrong" or bad practice, just a difference to how things are done here. At least two glaring differences were tiling over wood (never mind in a wet area), and different water-proofing methods that would't be accepted here.
Nice video Sal.. Beautiful work..
Good work Sal.
Great video . Nice techniques; The time lapse is great . The sounds are hilarious.
I saw some kerdi installations you did .......really good...
Great job, man.
Nice bath, congratulation sir!!!👍👍👍
Amazing! One man wonder.
Excellent work.
Ohh man. You know your a master at tile when you know the traditional way of making the shower base out of sand mix. I've tried and I felt I was getting no where.
Such a nice job!
Good job...I'm learning.
ese maestro de la construccion si trabaja muy rapido
The amount of repetitive questions is unreal. Do people look at the comments at all? Sal must have addressed the waterproofing, spacers and tile to plywood almost 1000 times.
As Always Master' I'm in Awe!!😲
Nice, vry informative
Nice job that is!
Nice work Man
Such hard work.
you Say are the best I've seen
Great job! I’m a tiler too and it is interesting to see how other tilers do. Don’t worry what some DIYers are commenting here. Tile directly on top of ply wood is perfectly acceptable as long as proper tile adhesive is used.
Sal you are the best.
we have the same superior cutter perfect for those little showers
I love this and all of your videos, A saw the mortar you use for the mosaic, but what brand/type of thinset do you use to apply the subway tiles? Also, what is your grout of choice?
Excellent good work
I didn't know you can tile over wood I useily use cement board looks great
Very specific details must be followed, Uncoupling membrane is always better, but I can't always call the shots.
Your right you do awesome work

Who needs a lazer for datum line. Great video.
Eres el mejor amigo
Hey Sal, great videos! For this job, why didn't you use spacers? Thanks
Good job, am also a tiler
Merci chef.
I'm going to buy a small wet saw like that so I can set it up right in the room like you did. My full size saw just isn't necessary for something like this
he makes no mistakes! brilliant tiling skills. Preparing waterproofing the surface is not his job, just the amazing tiling lol
good job
I like the way he presents his work because it explains very well how to do things without words and in fast motion, which actually aen one wants to know, how things are done. I would like to ask because I have to take a bath tiles but do not want to break the partition wall is there a technique or have some video that explains how to do this work without having to break the wall. Thank you for your information. I am aprendis and you are a teacher for me. thanks and congratulations
+nelson correa I don't quite understand the question, but if you go to my Chanel you will find almost 500 videos czcams.com/users/saldibs
damn I wanna tile like this someday
Beautiful job one question why did you not need to put wire down on the wooden sub floor?
Master level
amazing...
muy buenooooooooooo cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee felicitaciones desde argentina ruben
Dit is een zeer goed voorbeeld, van hoe het niet moet.
The how, pray tell, should it be done.
Nice work
Thanks
Very funy this presentation mod !
love the hammering @11:07 lol
youre so super fast!! :)
Artist.
Mis respetos señor !!! Exelente trabajo y no sabía que se podía instalar encima de plancha de madera !!!
really a torpedo level to check a 4 foot span? (setting the curb) is that what you use to plum out the walls also?
You are great boos
wow, this guy is fast!
Bravo!!
You are so amazing and I really impressed what you are doing, do you like to install small tiles or large format tiles?????, which is easier????? Thanks.
The bigger the tile, the harder the install, unless you are doing mosaic tile, which is also not easy.
Thank you. It was very helpful, but I think FFW is the term you're looking for, not time lapse. One gets used to the squeaking after a while. 😊
Do you charge more per metre when using smaller tiles in showers, kitchens, floors etc
What happened to backer board for tile in the shower and the floors? No one uses that anymore? Once removed floor tile in an previous home in the bath and the wood under the tile was rotted out at the edges because no water barrier. Those materials are porous
That’s actually a good idea to use a piece of wood like a 2x4 or whatever size helps you to make sure you start off level…. I guess even if you are doing a shower pan put the piece of 2x4to where you start off on the second row and do that first and then drop back and do the first then continue up from the third
Beast!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
mosaic tile straight on plywood without cement board or waterproof ? how long they gonna last ? wood contracts and expands and tile going good bey ..
Very nice work! thanks for taking the time to video the whole process.
wooo good job
nunca había visto un hombre tan rapido
