I've found ps2 and ps3 controllers make a good practice surface. It's a hard plastic not exactly polymer but will behave in a similar fashion when stippling. Yeah I bought one of the better wood burning kits on Amazon for like $50.00 came with like 30 different brass tips and different blades, gloves, stencils to trace, colored pencils, a lot of other useful things. I like the basket weave texture and gator skin about the best
