Best step-by-step T-56 rebuild video I’ve seen, yet!! I am having 1st and 2nd gear engagement problems in my 2000 Corvette. You’ve given me the confidence, bravery, and courage to take on this job!
I have an issue getting it into first time to time after coming to a stop. I’ve also had the shifter kinda bounce back when downshifting into 3rd and 5th. I think it might be getting close to rebuild time.
I must say....Thank You for this video. It is hands down the best video I have seen on a T56 teardown! You need to make more videos as you explain things so well.
Oh dude what timing. I'm about to pull my trans and try a rebuild myself. Definitely put the link for the tools in the description! What a daunting task, I keep having to tell myself it's like assembling legos, but much more expensive LOL, great thing is my trans is exactly the same as yours so this video is just amazing
Big thanks to you! I watched your videos, took your advice and along with the Tremec manual I was able to rebuild my T56 myself. Thanks for all the detail and explanation
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist They didn't replace the snaprings for speedo reluctor. They literally slid off. They didn't mention or fix 5th gear or the synchro. Both are bad. Car never seen 5th since they rebuilt it until 14 months later my son tried to go to 5th first time driving it and it would grind. The car was sitting in the trailer for 14 months and was never driven. but Tick wouldn't warranty it. They used the nylon shift pads. One was broke.
I have a question also, what is that yellowish/tan plug that is coming out down below that green tag? Mines snapped and I don't quite know what it is? Neutral safety switch?
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist also what is that plug in underneath the green tag? Yellowish in color? Mine snapped off of my t56 and I don't quite know what to order to replace it.
@@marlattmotos basically it locks out 2nd gear under low load acceleration and guides the shifter straight from first gear to fourth, skipping 2nd and 3rd. It was supposed to help with fuel economy. I bought the 12 ton press and the channel where the gear rest’s between is too small and doesn’t fit. Hopefully the 20 ton does as I will be returning the 12 for the 20. Just for this job.
This is an amazing work! Found this just as I was about to replace all of the reverse parts . Question ...my t56 had been disassembled prior to buying it and was missing everything all the way to the synchronizer and reverse fork . I've ordered everything but can't seem to figure out the part# for that first plastic spacer you pulled above the speedo gear. Any help finding this part would be much appreciated.
Thank you! Are you talking about the black piece at 7:32? The service manual refers to it as a "sealing ring" on pages 2-5 and 4-4 but it does not list a part number and without the part number I've been unable to locate the part online. I can only recommend reaching out to Tremec via www.tremec.com/contacto.php. Let them know that you're looking for the sealing ring described on those pages and see if they can point you to a source for the part or at least give you the part number. Wish I could offer more info.
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist yes , that "sealing ring" at around 7:30 is the part I was inquiring about . I'll contact tremec like you suggested. Thank you for the response and for the help .
Thanks for the video, I just found you at Facebook t56 page, question ❓ got my hands on a t56 97 Pontiac firebird, second gear grains and sometimes is harder to shift in to, all the rest of gears shift good except when I go to 6 gear I got vibration, any input I will appreciate thanks again
If it's grinding going into second it's likely the clutch material is worn from the 2nd gear blocker ring. If it hasn't been happening for too long you might be able to reuse second gear and the 1-2 synchro slider. It's worth replacing all the blocker rings and inspecting all gears and synchro sliders while everything is apart. The vibration in 6th could be caused by worn splines on the main shaft where the 5/6 cluster gear presses on. If the 5/6 cluster slides off without much effort I would take a close look at the main shaft splines and if they're severely worn I would recommend having the splines repaired.
While they're both technically t56s, the Corvette T56 in the Corvette is set up differently as far as the shifter and tail end go. Synchros are slightly different in the later T56 as well, if I'm not mistaken. I would imagine the process is roughly the same, but there will certainly be some differences here and there.

I’m thinking of trying this and doing bearings as well. May the lord be with me 😂.thanks for the vid mate
I’m in the middle of converting a T56 from a C5 to stuff behind an LS in a 3rd gen Camaro and this has been a great video, appreciate it!

Ty, for the very helpful video about to open up the t56 out of my 95 z28, the lost 5th and 6th
good stuff saving this video for future reference
I bought the shims from TheGearBox. that small tapered bearing has to be removed first if you are working on a Corvette.
You the man bro, video is top notch. Thanks🤘🤘🔥🔥
Thank you!
Awesome video!
incredible work!
Thanks a lot!
Thank you for making an honest effort and using the manual! Unfortunately/have the opportunity to learn to do this too...
Great tutorial, should make a 1 year later update on the rebuild.
Awesome video man. Funny as shit too. Bout to have to do mine for the first time. Props on the vid🤙🏼
Thank you!
Having leftover parts just means you put it back together better then the factory🤣🤣
Amazing video Thankyou
Thank you! 😁👍
Did it end up shifting and doing well? About to attempt this the exact same way on my 96 Camaro Z28 T56.
Awesome video man.
Excellent vid. Saving me with the 5/6 assembly. I'm fixing what Tick screwed up / failed to fix.
Glad it could help! What part of 5\6 assembly did they miss?

Should replace the 3-4 aluminum shift fork with a steel one. That was a weak spot with these trannys

Yeah, 5-6 is supposed to be pressed onto the main shaft. If it can be removed by hand it NEEDS to be replaced.
When I find bolts super tight, its usually a warning sign of mechanical incompetence.
Bonjour,
Pour les kits de réfections, il y a une différence sur les t56 et les t56 magnum ?
merci
Yes
I take it this should be the same steps for a t56 out of a 06 corvette? I need to replace the output shaft.
