I just realized, the way the Happy Masked Salesman acts also acts with loss.
- When he finds out Link didn't bring back his mask, he goes into a moment of denial.
- Immediately after, he flies into a rage, violently shaking Link.
- He tells the story of Majora's Mask, and then begs Link repeatedly to bring back his precious mask, to which Link says yes.
- While we don't really see him for the rest of the game until the end, he's probably super bummed out that his mask is gone and filled with anxiety that the Skull Kid casually is ending the world.
- When his mask is finally returned at the end of the game, he says the evil has left the mask. It sounds like he's a bit disappointed that it's just a normal mask again, but either way, he accepts the mask and moves on with his life.

I understand that this theory has long since been debunked, but one crucial element was missing in this theory: Hyrule Historia explicitly states that the Hero of Time LIVES after the events of Majora's Mask, he even has children.

The first theory I watched, granted it was a couple years after its release, but i remember playing majora’s mask, completing it, but I never knew what happened next to link, it was vague, until one day i stumbled upon this video
This theory has been heavily debunked. Link lived into his adulthood and had children with TP Link being his blood descendant.

Matt has said on more than one occasion that not all of his theories are meant to be taken seriously. Game Theories job is meant to entertain by stretching the realities of fake video game worlds and stories in order to draw extreme and outlandish conclusions, not come up with well thought out, possible true intentioned analysis. Sure, a lot of them are like that, but I don’t think anyone believes that Nintendo actually intended for Mario to secretly be a sociopath, or for the Companion cube to actually be a curled up dead aperture employee, etc etc. They aren’t meant to be taken seriously without exception, they are entertainment, and from them you can choose to believe it if you want, or do what most people do and go “Hello neighbour’s neighbour is Satan? That’s an interesting theory.”
The upload schedule for this channel is brutal. Not all of them are gonna be gems. And besides that isn’t it just fun to think about how physics would work if Minecraft’s worlds functioned like cube planets? Or speculate on what would happen to Termina if the moon did come close enough to hit the ground? Like,, who cares? I just find the content educational and entertaining. Do I think Rosalina is Luigi and Peach’s kid? No, not really. But do I like the episode? Yes! Genetics and genetic probability are intriguing subjects that are fun to listen to.

I would have a bit more respect if a video like this couldn't be refuted in SECONDS with something as simple as "Hero's Spirit from Twilight Princess exists." This theory would all be well and good except for that fact that the next game in the timeline (Twilight Princess) has made it pretty clear that the hero of Twilight is a direct descendant of the hero of time. So unless Link already had a family at the age of 10 before he "died" looking for Navi than I don't think this theory works.

One of the ways I’ve interpreted Majora’s Mask is that at the end of Ocarina of Time Link defeats Gannon, saves the Princess, saves the world and becomes a child again. He pretty much has fulfilled his destiny by the age of 10; anyone in that situation would wonder to themselves- “What purpose does my life have now, what’s left?” So I view Link’s journey in Majora’s Mask is him searching for the meaning of his existence in a new land and by collecting numerous masks that have their own unique design as well as different powers. This can be seen as a metaphor for Link having an identity crisis and part of this journey is a quest for him to find himself. But that’s just my theory.

I believe this is the first Game Theory I watched and now Im 18 and Matt is saying goodbye.
You missed something rather important. The chronology of the number "4" throughout Majora's Mask. You use four forms for most of the game's puzzles, there are four major story arcs/dungeons, there are four giants, etc. etc. -- in Japan, the number "4" is heavily symbolic of death. It's notable that the beginning of the fourth day is game over *except* at the very end of the game -- when Link has accepted his own death. But it's just a theory...!

I'm surprised you never mentioned how link was constantly using the song of healing to "heal" or make people accept their fate. Also in the long run heal his own heart and make him accept his own fate to escape purgatory.

Notice how in this theory and the ones pre 2015, there are not many breaks in pace and no mainstream trends crammed in? Notice how its mostly informative and doesnt gloss over information, and it isnt a song and dance? While I admit the theory has some good points. I will say that Nintendo confirmed that Termina was an alternate reality to that of Hyrule. Skull kid's magic basically sends you through a wormhole. Ehh. Need to think about this all. Interesting stuff.

If I remember rightly, this was the first Game Theory I watched.

OMG, OMG, OMG!!!! So guess what I just thought of!!??!!!! If princess peach is just the princess, then who is the king!? BOWSER. Bowser is king koopa and princess peach is his daughter! he is kidnapping her just to either test Mario to make sure he is worthy to be with his daughter or because he doesn't want him around her AT. ALL. Here is some proof: at the beginning of super Mario galaxy, when bowser comes closer to the kingdom peach doesn't react, she doesn't run, and she doesn't really do anything to show any effort to escape. Why? Well consider this, if its her father then she is familiar with this man, she knows him and has known him for a while. and if you're still not convinced then i lead you to the video created by matpat from game theory. It talks about how Mario treats his family, the kingdom, his relationship with Peach and how he is always cheating on her. Now, there is two sides of the relationship between peach and bowser, one where he could have been abusive and peach ran away to create her own kingdom. Bowser finds out and wants to kidnap her and bring her back to the kingdom where she originally was and where bowser has his place of power. Sadly, I guess, the hero Mario comes to his girlfriend, peaches, rescue! On the other hand there is the theory that he doesn't want Mario to be around peach which i discussed in the first half, but I don't think its that good of a theory. Seriously? The man that has kidnapped the chick over 10 times is just testing Mario? That's stupid, and out of character for bowser. So I'm turning my attention to my theory that he was abusive of his power and was abusive of his daughter, peach. First off, if you guys have even heard of him, there is an actual king toadstool. Which I don't think he counts because he only showed up in 'super Mario bros: peach-hime kyushutsu dai sakusen!' And 'the super Mario bros. film' and I think we all know that the movie was GOD AWFUL. And I honestly have no idea what the first thing was... :/
And also the theory of him and peach "making babies" to have the koopa kids....that could be true....sorry, but I'm about to ruin your childhood! :D peach may have been sexually abused by bowser! Then accidentally got pregnant with the koopa kids. YEP! I just raped your childhood in one sentence! :) and also, bowser said this in the game 'Mario and luigi dream team' "hear me! I will kidnap peach OVER and OVER until i pull it off! And no one can stop me! Losing is not an option! And neither is giving up!" That means that he is determined to get peach back no matter what. Because he sees himself as someone you shouldn't mess with, and when someone messes with him of disobeyed him he gets pissed off. I know, this is a video about the legend of Zelda, but I don't care! MARIO BITCHES!!!!

Doesn't the hyrule history also state that if you die as a child in the lost woods, you become a skull kid, not a stalfos, unless you are an adult.

While that is true, there is the possibility that the reason he is on purgatory to begin with is his regret of dying as a child. In OoT, he becomes and adult and goes on an epic adventure, and would feel regret knowing he would never actually grow into an adult and have another adventure. MM is his way to cope. One last adventure that you can repeat over and over until you are ready to move on. Once he realizes he doesn't need his quest anymore, he matures into an adult (he looks about that age it would happen anyway) and tries to pass on. That's why the main enemy is a skull kid. It's what link is afraid of becoming.
I wish I could drop more than 1 like for you, Caitlin; that was near-flawless. I'm convinced.
It's worth noting, I feel, that Skull Kid's wearing a mask for practically the entire time he's been on-screen at all. He's always...hiding...something, or *from* something. Masks are definitely a great way to convey hidden meanings and twist feelings, What a perfect game.
well Link's been an adult as well as a kid, maybe the fact that he's mastered time has something to do with it. his appearance is determined by whether he has the kokori sword or the master sword sure, but maybe the transformation has more to do with the age of a person's soul. idk, just a thought
This is one of my all time favourite game theory videos as the evidence is really interesting and very well explained. Whether you believe the theory or not I think there's a lot to think about with it and it's not entirely unplausable like people try to say. Plus this video taught me about a really important thing: The 5 stages of grief, like in detail, I had never heard of it until this video and I think it's really interesting and has surprisingly been something I could bring up repeatedly at school college and university and has given something interesting to think about. At the end of the day, it's a theory... A GAME THEORY ;)

This video was impactful in my life. I got into the whole of The Legend of Zelda because of it. It was at a time just after school where I was bullied and overworked. I didn't even remember what I enjoyed doing and Majora's Mask reminded me playing video games was one of those things.
I came back to the video because I remember it filled my head with expectations of deep messages about death which Majora's Mask didn't really have even if it was so good. And it is now that I'm playing Persona 3 and finally it explores these themes with excruciating detail.
Play it if you have the chance. The story is illuminating
I know I'm WAYYYYY late but I wanted to add to this theory. With my shotty Spanish speaking skills, 'Termina' translates to end/ends. Link falls into the end, or the after life.

Hell I thought he was going to say "Termina" as in "Terminated" as in, Link being dead. His life being terminated.
This video prompted me to play Majora’s Mask again and now that I’ve seen this video the stages of grief are so obvious whenever I speak to anyone.
I think the entire game is a metaphor for death, not that link is dead. But that's just a theory. Also the dancing redeads in Ikana castle represents acceptance, as in accepting you are dead and reveling in it - a sort of absurdist meaning.
As in, Termina is real, but a metaphor for purgatory. That is why it is at the bottom of a huge pit. Also, in the inn, the grandma talks of the overworked as "the heavens". The happy mask salesman says that not because he has died, but because he has gone to this purgatory, where forms of all the living people in Hyrule also live.
