    I had a Beretta 92S in the early 80's. Dropped it while carrying it to the car. It was in a soft case and landed on its muzzle. It fired a round into the concrete. Fortunately the round embedded in the concrete. I contacted Beretta. They acknowledged the firing pin is not locked, rather is free floating.

      Yep! The 92S are NOT drop safe and this is not the first story I heard of 92S misfiring after being dropped with a round in the chamber. This is why for the 92FS, Beretta added a firing pin block on top of the slide, the little metal block that rises when the trigger is pulled to solve this issue.

    7:50 Actually the firing pin block came with the 92SB, the model prior to the 92F. So the timeline goes like this: original 92 (released in 1975 or 76) --> 92S (1978 or 79, safety moved from frame to slide, gained decocker but lost the cocked and locked capability) --> 92SB (1981 for USAF trials. Added firing pin block, ambidextrous safety, 3-dot sights, mag release changed to 1911 style) --> 92F (1984, adopted as US Army's M9 in 1985. Originally called 92SB-F, changes include squared off trigger guard, recurved front strap which sootch00 mentioned at 4:09, chromed bore, and Bruniton finish instead of blueing for better corrosion resistance) --> 92FS (1989, after some slide fracture reports Beretta modified the design with an enlarged hammer pin head. This prevents the slide from flying backward into shooter's face in case of a breakage. It was also available in G model or decock only for the French Gendarmerie).
    1992 came the 40SW version called Beretta 96. US Border Patrol asked Beretta to make them a reinforced version, this brought us the Brigadier slide with dove-tailed front sight, slanted dust cover, and the radiused backstrap (top portion of backstrap have a reduced cut out). The 2001 released 92 Elite IA and Vertec, both featured the straight backstrap with reduced girth, and integrated 1-slot picatinny rail for the first time (Elite IA also has Brigadier slide and is a G model). That grip is now known as the Vertec grip and featured on the M9A3. M9A1 was released in 2006 and adopted by USMC. It adds a single-slot rail, aggressive front and back checkering, and beveled mag well to the M9. M9A1 is supplied with physical vapor deposition (PVD) coated mags for sand resistance :)

  • @GC_Rallo
    @GC_Rallo Před 5 lety +5

    After putting about 750 rounds through my 92S, I can definitely say these are way worth the money. If you don't mind the sights or the different magazine release button, they're definitely worth the $300-ish dollar price tag. I replaced the springs in mine once I picked it up and haven't had a single issue from the pistol, it's extremely accurate, shoots smooth, and the single-action trigger is wonderful. I agree with Sootch that the price on these will likely rise over the next few years as supply runs dry, like with most surplus firearms, so if you want one, pick it up now!

    Got this last year for $179 after watching this video and it's great. The gun obviously looks worn and scratched up, but the internals look fantastic. The guide rod spring may have to be replaced later down the line, but that's to be expected. I can easily get another 1000 rounds from it before having to do so. I just took it to the range today after not shooting it in a while (been using the IWI Jericho 941 my grandfather gave me) and it still performs great. While the mag release button, the round trigger guard, and the sights are different from the Beretta 92FS, you're getting great value on an excellent Beretta 92. Most Beretta 92s start around $600 and the used ones aren't that much cheaper.
    I had to come back here to thank you sootch00. Without this video, I would have never looked into getting this. Probably would have spent much more since I was saving up for the M9A3 after wanting a 92 for so long.

    Smoothest action made, like buttered glass when you rack it. The 92S has a nice feel to it with it's smooth front and back strap. I've got a half dozen newer Berettas with the Brunition and Inox finishes. The 92s has an old school gloss blue finish, it's a shame it's not offered any more...Beautiful.

    Bought one a month ago, my first handgun purchase. Beautiful blued finish with some minor holster wear, barrel has been replaced, and it came with a later model guide rod which was incorrect and made it very difficult to pivot the take down lever. After grinding the dimple on the end of the guide rod (to match what a 92s rod looks like) it’s been flawless. I’ve surprised myself at how accurately I can shoot it at 25 yds. I’ve put about 500 rds through it, it feeds anything from steel case junk to hornady CD+P. Sights aren’t huge but very usable as long as it’s not pitch black out there. Paid $329, found some NOS beretta mags at the hardware store for $40/ea, and a 20rd ProMag. All work well. Several friends have offered to buy it for more than I paid.
    Get one while you can

    Just some information on the mags, you can get Beretta manufactured 92 mags from BerettaUSA and they will have both the cutouts for the 92FS and the 92S pistols, the only ones that do not have the cutout for the 92S are the 17-round mags and any of the "M9" or "M9A1" mags, ProMag 15-round 92 mags will also have the cutout for the 92S. I've used both and the Beretta mags seem to work better, but once they're broken in the ProMags do fine as well, they can just be a little bit stiff at first and I've even had the ProMags cause my 92S' slide to lock back half-way through firing a loaded magazine!

      Either was mine. Hate to see what the other 9 looked like. Scratches all over. Barrel was rusted, and the grips look like they went thru a meat grinder.

    Questo esemplare mostrato nél video è sicuramente una 92-S aggiornata nell' Arsenale di Terni negli anni 90 con l' aggiunta della sicura al carrello otturatore anti arretramento fine corsa,ed in più è stata completamente rivestita di materiale opaco ,e messa in attesa di riassegnazione, e credo che poi non sia più stata in servizio, poiché non presenta nessun sbiancamento del carrello,tipico segno d'uso operativo data la conformazione delle fondine chiuse dei Carabinieri, quindi un arma nuova d'Arsenale. D'altronde dal video precedente ha avuto la possibilità di scegliere la pistola su migliaia di esemplari che sono stati inviati dall' Italia dopo la dismissione dal servizio operativo di questo modello definito ormai obsoleto ! Complimenti comunque ottimo video come sempre !!! 🥇

    Dear Mr. Sootch double ought, the Beretta 92s, and in reality, all Beretta pistols are very nice arms!! There are some very nice surplus S models out there!! And yours is no exception!! With the stainless guide rod, and it's fine finish, it's very beautiful!!
    Just one thing that I would like to point out. When field stripping/disassembly of your pistol, there is no need to pull the slide back, and lock it open!! Actually, it will put extra tension in the recoil spring, that is necessary to overcome, to rotate the disassembly latch! As the pistol is standing free, just simply depress the disassembly lock button, on the right side, and then rotate the latch on the left side, and the recoil spring will gently force the slide assembly forwards a bit, and it is ready to remove! If you point the muzzle up above a horizontal plane, the slide will not fall off. If you point the muzzle down below horizontal, there is a possibility that the slide will come off, and fall to the ground! If you just place your left hand on top of the slide, use your left middle finger to press the button on the right, while using your left thumb to rotate the disassembly latch, while using your left palm to control sudden movement, then just grip it, and slide it off!

      Yeah, I bought two. Both have heavy holster wear and moderate mechanical wear. One has visible pitting on the barrel in 3 places and a nearly half-inch gouge in the right side of the trigger guard. No where near this condition. Second order was a pair of extra mags, one was ok. The other looked parkerized it was so rusted. Someone must have used it as a hammer at one point too as there are half a dozen dents on the back of the magazine (mag condition was graded "very good to excellent"). Not a good first impression for Classic Firearms...

    I got one of these from the same place you did. I was a bit disappointed. I was hopping mine would have a bit more wear showing its age, but mine ended up with minor holster wear only, ha. Well I guess not every one of my surplus guns will have much of a tale to tell.
    Oh, and the newest Beretta magazines have both the cuts in them, so they will fit all Betetta Model 92s. Thanks Beretta for thinking about us with your older pistols.

    The 92S police trade in I bought a year or two ago didn't have that matte finish. It had a beautiful blued finish and frames anodizing was glossy. I hate I sold it. I wonder why the older released trade ins had that finish and the newer ones don't. I wonder if the newer imports are being refinished by Beretta before being released. As good as the finish seems I'd say they are as Beretta goes through them before they come stateside. I've also had a beautiful blued Beretta 92SB. I kept one of my Beretta's. It's my Beretta 92FS Police Special and I love it even though I'm not a fan of manual safeties on guns and especially when they are slide mounted. I shoot the Beretta 92FS and Sig P226 better than any other handguns I've ever owned.

    • @scottmcghee2179
      @scottmcghee2179 Před 6 lety

      Warmachine_13 The matte color ones have been refurbished at Beretta before import and most have had the barrel replaced. The refurb. black matte slide finish is almost like a paint and wears off over time. The original finish is deep bluing.

  • @BloodshedRomance

    Is the 92s compatible with other 92 holsters? As you mentioned it's an older model with the rounded trigger guard instead of a squared off trigger guard. Also Brownells has a adapter plate for a light rail on the Beretta 92 but it requires Drilling and is held together with screws. I'm also interested in knowing which parts are interchangeable between the 92s and the 92fs. Particularly the barrel and guide rod because Beretta sells threaded and non threaded barrels on their website but I'm not sure that they would fit the 92s. Just questions I haven't found answers to yet.

    Any of the 10 or 15 round 92fs mags available directly from Baretta have both notches for either mag release. Double check when buying, but most of them say "Fits: 92S - 92SB - 92F - 92FS - 92A1 - M9 - M9A1 - 90-Two - Billennium - Vertec - Brigadier - Centurion - Elite.". (Also, the Beretta website has great sales on mags every couple months) The 17 and 30 round mags do not. However, I have bought those and cut the notch out myself with a dremel and they work fine.

    Beretta tends to make a nicely finished 92 pistol, but that design wandered away from their superior original 1970s frame mounted safety system: the Taurus PT92 uses that now on their now Beretta machinery they bought in the 70s.
    That 1911 type safety/decocker is more natural to use on the utilitarian finished PT92. Also, nice to have cocked & locked PT92 whereas the Beretta 92FS doesn't have that option.
    I disliked the M9 slide mounted system when I used it in the military.
    IMHO, the best Beretta out there is the 92D ~ DAO pistol that "mimics" a revolver, but with 15+ rounds of firepower.
    Nice review Sootch of this Beretta 92S!

So all of you turning them down due to the sights just leave more for us that like em. It is a classic design with no dumb rail or ugly squared off trigger guard.
