Beretta 92FS Police Special: Old School Cool 20th Century Nostalgia with REAL STEEL parts!

- Last week we took a look at the Walther P38. Today’s video showcases a police surplus pistol dating back to 1994.
The Beretta 92FS Police Special seen here is old enough to have the steel decocker safety, steel magazine release, steel trigger, steel guide rod, and aluminum mainspring cap. It came from the factory with Trijicon tritium night sights which have long since gone dim. The frame is the old style without the reinforced dust cover or radiused back strap. It has the gen 2 locking block developed to prevent premature cracking.
It’s a great pistol to shoot. Very smooth and I briefly address some of the complaints that have arisen over the decade in defense of what is one of my favorite 9mm full size handguns.
Next week we’ll compare this workhorse to an even older warhorse when we look at the Beretta 92FS side by side with a Walther P38.

I agree. Excellent and very shootable design. They can handle a lot of abuse, and bring so large I’ve always found them to have very mild recoil.
My second Beretta I just got yesterday. The 92fs feels perfect in my hand, the slide is extremely smooth. I cant wait to put 1000s of rounds through it. Proven reliability, they say can handle 10s of thousands of rounds before failure. My other Beretta is the micro small pocket pistol 950 jetfire . 25 love it as well.
They’re definitely robust handguns and extremely smooth to shoot. A little large by some standards, but I don’t think there is a better handling pistol.
My 92FS is also a Police Special. I've since replaced the polymer guide rod with a fluted steel one. I'm thinking of swapping out the grips too. and perhaps the trigger spring. I don't mind the heavy double action trigger pull (being left-handed but shoot right-handed-- gotta love cross eye dominance).
It's abit large for me to carry concealed, but still a reliable pistol.
They are definitely a bit of a tank. Such great handling, though, and very robust.
change a few springs and the locking lug and you have essentially a new weapon
This has gotten a new recoil spring and the ban-era magazine that came with it also got a new one. The trigger spring of course was replaced when it broke. New firing pin since I discovered the old one had cracked but as still functioning at the time.
The locking block is the type 2 improvement. Not the most modern iteration, but not as prone to issues as the original design. I inspect it carefully during cleaning for any indications a crack may be developing.
They’re very repairable pistols that can be kept going a long time with a little bit of care. In spite of being three decades old and fairly heavily used, I would absolutely call this one duty-ready.

Trigger return spring was made for LAPD. I believe. Put one in my 1980 first Gen 92 many years ago. My 92A1 has all metal parts. Including Langdon and Wilson combat parts. Its DA is like nice revolver. At 7pounds. I always practice DA shooting. To the point I am just as good as SA.
I think you’re right about the LAPD part, then the Border Patrol implemented it in their 96s after that. I could be wrong about those aspects, but I definitely like the upgrade.

The 92X is going to be almost identical in function, just with some of the production changes which incorporate more plastic. While the pistol in this video is interesting because of the old steel parts, I do have experience with the newer 92 series pistols and the plastic parts either cause no functional issues or are actually better.
The newer pistols, including the 92X, also benefit from the newer design of locking block and the more robust frame, which is a small issue on these older pistols.
In short, the 92X is going to be much the same just with the obvious cosmetic differences and the benefit of several decades of mechanical refinement making small tweaks to perfect the design.

I've got an assembled may 1990 bought receipt still jan 1991 parts shipped from Italy but stamped acck md 92 fs, owners manual says 92 outside, with a P inside a shield right side trigger guard (yours does also but not others) 1 white rear dot and 1 in the front, inside manual states 92 sb 92f and 92 sb compact so I guess I got one of the first after military mx safety mandates magnet sticks to all even frame, bottom of magazines, straight screws, color is 1 color not 2 toned called baretta they told me its rare only shot 250 through and still looks like the day I bought it must be making a comeback as all sold out here where I live pretty sure mines in die hard 2 terminator 2 and maybe lethal weapon 2 on?. can't stop starring at it all day everyday. and since you tube seeing how the rank in the top 3 every year reliability accuracy etc just pumps me up.never seen mine on tube but many have previous models and later and many more than I do but perhaps I have the right lucky correct one? Leaving mine original. Love the first ones. around 89-94 95 came a diff model, paid 458.66 in 1990. 5 upgrades thicker firing pin, bruniton finish, slide cut groove to prevent slide fly off, improved barrel bushing release, chrome lined barrel, thicker barrel so no need for lip slips on x models, Retired Air Force. My only handgun.
That’s definitely an early one. Awesome that it’s in great condition. I like the older Berettas. They’re nostalgic but also very capable handguns. Sure, mine cracked a firing pin (but still worked even while broken) and broke a trigger spring, but considering its heavily used condition I think that’s pretty good. It’s had a tough life but still going strong.
