I just rode this the first time two days ago, and it's far more intense than this vid makes it look. You run off the road on the left side in this direction and you're going down 200 feet or more. The curves are also a lot tighter than they appear here. This is not a ride you race, it's a ride you survive.
yes, the roads are a lot more curvy and tighter in person. was there 2wks ago
It is a road you "grow with" as you gain experience.
DON'T ride it the first time at more than a 'comfortable' pace, with a margin of safety to be ready for 'surprises' such as diminishing radius curves and such.
As you ride it more times, you 'learn' the road more, and can add some speed as you are safely able to do so... but Never Over-Ride your Skill Level..!!
BUT DO be courteous enough to allow faster riders to safely pass you and go on with their ride..! [Just move to the right side of the lane, and allow them to pass in the left side half of the lane, so they don't have to cross a double line. Or, if in a car, use the little 'pull-offs' along the road to allow others to pass.]
John Buffaloe hell yeah I rode it the first time 3 years ago on my Suzuki gsx600f and I had a blast we had a good size group riding and you are correct about that but it is bad ass you know
Never under stood the big deal about this area, down here in Florida we have 11 turns in 318 miles đ
Have fun and ride safe.
Trust me, you can go MUCH faster on 129. Try it again later on once you've learned the road and see what you can do. Thank you for keeping it in your lane, us locals appreciate it.
iJArrowood
Just did in my 1999 FRC Vette - Up in 11:38 down in 10:28.
Yes you can go faster. My first time. A couple more times and I am sure I could knock quite a bit of time off.
Sunday morning early is the best time if you have to do it on a weekend.
During the week is best As the road sees almost 1500 cars a day.
No matter how good of a driver you are, nor how nice of a car you are driving...
It is FOOLISH and can get innocent people KILLED to be "Racing for time" on the Dragon!
Unless you are participating in one of the "Closed Road" events they do from time to time...
I PRAY you are NEVER on the Dragon the same time as ME!!
I go there to ride and ENJOY...NOT to get KILLED by someone who doesn't know the difference in a Public ROAD and a Closed-Course Race Track!!
Go to Road Atlanta {try beating a lap of 1:40..!!} or Atlanta Motorsport Park or to the new track at the Corvette Museum to post your 'best time'...NOT Public Highways!
+Floyd Burdett I never said that you should push yourself to try to get that time down unless it's a closed-course event, but a faster ride is easily attainable.
As for myself, I will never push past 70% of my limits on the street due to variables that I have no control over. Animals/oil spills/weather/fallen trees/gravel/other people/etc.
Then drive or ride the BRP.
I live really close to the Dragon, and one time I was riding it and a goldwing passed me right before a turn and was in the oncoming lane. Once we got to the store I was going to look for him but he shot back up the Dragon. Later on we figured out that he never made it to the top. He was going so hard he missed a turn and went off a cliff. It cut off his arm and leg and he bled to death.
Poor bastard, people really need to ride within their limits. Sad.
I bet you were glad to hear that
If The Dragon is too tight and twisty for you to really enjoy, ride the Cherohala Skyway, Hwy 28 east of Deal's Gap, or Foothills Pkwy. to Hwy 321 east to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, and south on 441 thru the Smokies National Forest...
That entire area of N. GA, W. NC, and E. TN is a CANDY LAND of great riding!
For car, cruiser, or sportbike and sport-touring...
Road this one too and it is a great road, there are may roads in the Smokey mountains that are a better ride than the dragon, but maybe not so challenging
The Cherry-Cola Skwy has a few parts that could get you tangled up tho. The thing that is deceiving about it is that it gets crooked, straightens out for a while then gets all twisty again. You sort of get comfortable and then there's like 15 turns thrown at you.
28 is a lot of fun but again it has a few spots that you need to be awake to navigate. I personally like 28 more simply because it's less crowded.
Dragon on weekdays is okay. Dragons on weekends is like 5 sport bikes, followed by a few muscle cars trying to keep up, followed by some Harleys, followed by a pack of like 30 groms dressed head to toe in race leathers, followed by like 30 mini-coopers, followed by a work truck, followed by more sport bikes and Harleys. It's a fucking parade. Too much commotion for me man.
Thank you for the suggestions, Floyd! Looking forward to checking out these roads!
Every road in the Great Smokies has it's own personality. They are all great.
To me there is no such thing as " too twisty " when it comes to roads.
I love riding the Dragon.
But each to their own.
I've seen so many dragon videos that it's weird watching one without a crash for once lol. Sunnyside up!
True that. I don't know why, but the dragon seems to attract squids and beginners. I just can't comprehend what's going on in their tiny brains.
if you look again there is a crash
@@trimmin420 yeah around 4:20
4 min mark
My Grandma and Grandpa live about a hour from this road... therefore i have been on this road so many times in my dads mustang!!!! This road is sick and love the video!
The line you choose is an excellent example of delayed apexing. Fast and safe. The rider in front isn't terrible, but your lines are clearly safer and could be done faster if you were on your own.
Man, it's so sad how videos can't show just how awesome and tight this road is. I just got back from my first trip there and I can't believe how different it looks in person. Great video as always bro.
Glad you got a chance to make it up there. I've ridden it on at least 5 different bikes and even a few times in my old 350z. My very first VLOG is an unedited ride on the dragon (headed back south from the top). I enjoy it when I can sneak up there for a weekday ride. It's less crowded with slower cruisers and trucks pulling boats then :)
Beautiful road! Thanks for your videos.
Great vid c2w ! Glad u got to ride the dragon !
I ride the "Streak of the Coward" Old US 51 in Louisiana. 105 MPH, Honda VT1100C.
So proud of you!
Dayyum Chase, give the guy ahead of you some breathing room bro...still a great ride!
That would be Laura Craft in front of him. Not a guy..
Thanks CaptainWho for the correction! :)
He wants to be a bumper sticker when he grows up.
A.MuzeM Blackwell now that is a good one
No kidding! It would take me about 3 corners & Iâd wave him by. Shift idiot. And as said âgive breathing roomâ. Killâin me
That's the best road ever! Went there with my MINI back in 08
Great video of how to ride the tail when you don't know the road!! killer man!! Great job you guys!! Be safe and ride on!!
I'm going next week :-) probably blood Mountain too! Can't wait so excited!

"Dragon Tales, Dragon Tales
It's almost time for Dragon Tales
Come along and take my hand
Let's all go to Dragon Land"
(I cant believe I remembered those lyrics)
I really hope that I wasn't to Old watching that, when I was 8!
Good times tho, good times!
We are going to do this for the first time in April any advice?
Oh my god that road looks like so much fun!
I loved that ride, I did it at night where you can open up a bit more. And contrary to popular belief YOU can see others WAY better at night because you can see headlights around the corners which gives you time to slow down if your moving at a rate of speed which you shouldn't be.
I've ridden the Tail and it was no fun, and the carnage on that road is deplorable. State Road 60 from Blue Ridge GA to US19 north of Dahlonega is 62 miles long and I've ridden it over 20 times, and the fun factor is x 10. In the middle is Suches, and there are two mountain ranges on either side. Valley roads that run on the sides of the hills with non-stop curves and short straights. The problem there is the increase in police coverage and speed traps. On the end of 60 at US19, it is only a few miles to 129 and the trip across Blood Mountain. What those roads don't have is narrow lanes, which is common on Georgia State Roads which were picked by Mobil Travel Guide as the finest state highways in the USA.
The Cherohala Skyway is one of my favorites.
YES, there are some Great roads around the area of Suches/Blairsville/Helen and Vogle State Park -- and Brasstown Bald, the highest elevation in Ga at 4,783 feet. Don't miss Richard Russell Parkway and Hwy 180. And even more twisty roads east of there, but less elevation changes. You gradually change from 'twisty' to sweeping curves...
And be sure to stop to eat at Turner's Corner Cafe at 129 and 19... it looks like a "hole in the wall" place, but they have Great Food and Everyone is a "Friend" kind of service from the all Ladies staff... Eat out on the patio, so you can watch the bikes coming by...
Personally have been to the dragon twice. I go every spring now, the road during the day is terribly littered with people. Usually can squeeze good runs in very early morning or late in the evening. One of my favorite roads is moonshiner 28 which goes from Fontana dam down to the dragon
Yes, Moonshiner is a great ride, and almost no traffic! I usually go up to the Dragon by way of the Cherohala Skyway, then head home on the Moonshiner.
headed down there in June and july I think... love that place. great riding.
The Gates to the Dragon! lol They actually do close the dragon a lot during the winter.
Great time of year to go when those Dogwoods are blooming.
Crazy how the wide angle lens straightens out those 318 turns.
Thank you for awesome video and Thank you for sharing with us!!! Better be safe then sorry!!!!
Aw man you opened with "i just dont like roads like this". I just went and i loved it. Yeah, you cant go 100 but you can go quick through there if you're skilled enough. :)
You road that hard man. Nice work!
You did pretty good, bruh! That's a very technical road. I have some friends that I'm taking down for the first time... I hope they ride half as good as you did
Awesome I can't wait to get down there.
thanks , enjoyable ride on a famous rd , reminds me of the gillies h/way outside of cairns qld aust , good ride but always glad to see the end , we have the same prob people who treat it as a race track with no regard of other traffic , mate got killed head on with a car on wrong side of rd
I've been up twice just this year I love it and I love how awesome the people are up there .. I like the double sometime triple switchbacks I don't care about speed really as long as I can get low on the road.. But I guess that comes with me living in spitting distance from hwy 421 the snake 489 turns in 33 miles.. If you're thinking about going to that please it me up I'd love to tour you around
The Snake is an incredible ride, will definitely be back up there to give it another go...I was exhausted by the time I got done with it -lol!
That was a great video man..being safe enjoy the ride.. You didn't get chased by the police.. Nice to see a normal ride video!
Took a trip down from Ottawa, Canada to the Tail of the Dragon like a week after this post and it was wicked fun! Watch out for those curves though, any inexperienced rider could go off the road quite easily, we had to stop mid was on our drive, a trike went off the road :s
My ex and i did it 2 up on a 1200 lb 89 glide. Had a great time. So beautiful. Didnt need to speed thru at all. Did scrape pipes a couple times tho.
I just got back from spending some time up there and ridding US129. I'm from south Florida. There's not much like that down here. However, as much as I liked the Dragon I liked the other roads up there too. Like Moonshiner 28, Devils Triangle 116, NC143/ TN 165 Cherohala Skyway, Blueridge Parkway, the "Snake" TN 421, "Gambler" NC 209. Its some beautiful country up there. Oh well, that's my 2 cents.
I rode the Dragon last year late November end of the season. It was COLD but I had the road all to myself; there were three bikes in addition to me but that was it other than cagers. I def want to get back up there and also hit some of the surrounding roads. I also rode Blood Mountain (GA) on my trip to the area- that was a Blast too
I live less than an hour from the Dragon's north side. Daylight runs on the weekends are crowded to say the least. I prefer to do weekday rides and occasionally night runs. Nights are fun as there are typically fewer than a dozen folks out. Just watch for the deer and LEOs.
Iâm in knoxville. donât ride street bikes. but have been up quite a few times with friends in there cars(S2Kâs and STIâ) yes weekdays are a lot less crowded and night runs can be kinda sketchy depending on who you are. I also donât advise anyone going if they get slightly car sick, unless you just want your friends to make fun of you for having to stope and puke. lol
Awesome man. Dragon is about an hour away from me ima definitely hit it up!
Good stuff man!!!
I've rode the tail 5 times. It's not a fracking race track. It's a nice scenic ride.
Im going there next year! Its only a few hours from here in NC
I was just there!! its so awesome!
Try riding behind an RV!! Funniest part was meeting the guy at the gas station back near home. He said he just wanted to see how fun it was.
What brand levers you running? And where you get em? Thank ya sir
Chase on two wheels you have some awesome videos I enjoy your editing skills and your humor and just the things you do on a motorcycle you are awesome and intelligent hopefully I'm as skilled as you one day with your editing skills FZRRider... out
Good safe drive and video.
Yo chaseontwowheels, i watch 6foot4honda and i stumbled upon your channel. I saw a lot of your videos, some in particular that have to do with your bikes being stolen. 3 bikes you said. Here's how to not get your bike stolen. Get an open carry gun license, and get an app on your phone that lets you know when your motorcycle is turned on. Im sure you can find some kind of device that can tell when your bike is on. Or you could put a tracker on your bike AT ALL TIMES and if one day it goes missing, just use a program that lets you track the GPS you put on the bike.
what's the speed limit there?
Just wondering, I've seen some videos where it's small cc bikes running it. (note avatar)
I've rode (52) from Ellijay to Chattsworth, South mountain in Phoenix, and Mesa (Apache junction)to Tortilla flats.
Just wondering your opinion on how small bikes would do. Good video!
Did you get one of the stickers saying you survived the Tail of the Dragon? and you should try the snake (us421 i believe) its similar to the dragon.
I want to ride The Dragon, Blood Mountain and all those sweet roads you guys all go on down there. Next year
Chase, you and yummir6 should a do a bike comparison video. I'm sure the subscribers would love it! Just an idea I thought Id share
This was a sick vid..
Reminds me of Tamborine Mountain in the Gold Coast Hinterland in Queensland Australia
lol - that looked intense and I grew up in north ga on roads like this - noticed several things in a lot of these you tube videos on deals gap- lots of ambulances and police cars - lots of white crosses - riders don't generally chitchat much cause they seem extremely focused - and you don't see many bikers waving with that "bikers wave" - that ride looks intimidating. good ride chase you're not a white cross- although watching peeps drive in heavy traffic is more intimidating to me. I've been in 4 accidents 3 of them were me getting hit while stopped - 1 was me going way to fast for an interstate merge ramp on a bike I didn't know to well.
ANYONE who "attacks" the Dragon on their first ride -- or even their 2nd or 3rd ride -- is FOOLISH!
The Dragon is NOT for 'beginners' nor for "seeing how fast you can go"...!!
It DEMANDS RESPECT! You can "Slay the Dragon"...or it can SLAY YOU!
It can be a beautiful road on a 'cruiser' or even as a 'relaxed' ride on a sport bike -- but PLEASE be courteous enough to pull over, or at least to slip to the right-hand side of the lane, and let faster riders and drivers go by!!
AND it can ALSO be an Intense and 'technical' ride for a skilled and well-practiced rider!
But NEVER over-ride your skill level...and NEVER EVER cross over the Center Line! There are NO "passing zones" on the entire 11 miles! There are Only 'pull-offs' for drivers/riders who are courteous enough to use them. If you get "stuck".. you are just stuck! Passing on a double line is illegal, of course, but it can also be DEADLY! And crossing the center in a curve can get you KILLED REAL FAST! [And That is the FIRST thing the Police are looking for!!]
What's better tail of dragon or great ocean road in new zealand?
FML I missed this!!!
I was just there a couple weeks ago and bombed it down through there. I'll post the link of my gopro footage when I post it and you can see what riding the dragon really looks like
man you are so lucky you have roads like that.
my part of arizona is all 90 degree angles and straight roads. so boring
Welcome to Tennessee
Even way back then C2W knew how to set up the audio. Love to hear the bike and NOT the wind. Gonna do mine exactly how you have yours now with the Purple Panda, etc. Thank you! How late do the dogwoods bloom up there? May? March down here in FL. Thanks for the full, unedited pass.
The Gap is a decent road with loads of nice corners. You said you didnt like roads like that because you have to go so slow. Ride it at about 70% after youve learned it. Much faster pace and use a higher gear. I think we usually stay in 4th or 5th but we are also on naked bikes and not a r6. Thanks for staying in your lane.
I'll be going this year in may first time also....I'll tell you what i'll probably going alot slower at first like maybe 5 over speed limit :) Everyone I ever talk to says its very enjoyable so we'll see what I think over the 5 days i'm down there!
I know what you are saying about roads like that and having to ride, "slow." I ride The Snake (US 421) a little further up in TN and I have learned that people take them in sections. If you find a good section, you don't have to go slow at all. You learn it that way and you can move. You are right though, the consequences are always there when you get it in the mountains.
Nice run. Hope that guy that went down wasn't too badly hurt.
I remember reading about the Dragon a long time ago. They said if the sign says to do 30mph...you do 30mph.
Did y'all ride up there and back in one day or did you stay over night somewhere?
Thank You for the amazing video..My dream too.
Need to ride supermoto on Deal's Gap
I was just there like 2 weeks ago!!
Doesn't matter about the speed, still looks like a good road. By the way I only thought Americans road cruisers not race bikes too! You sir have earned yourself a new sub! :D
What kind of camera did you have on your helmet
Got to do it this spring or summer 2020
Did you ever change gear ?
i live an hour away from there and one fender have been posted on the tree of shame i think at 8 miles in but i rode home with one fender left on mh wr450
I live a few hundred miles away from the Tail of the Dragon, so I should drive it and other roads around it this summer or next summer.
I'm going in a couple weeks :)
I've thought about taking that road a few times but it's always too crowded. I think the Six Gap in GA is nicer. Longer, empty and you can go faster.
I been riding a year and a half but now i got an 1100 cruiser. It's my daily rider instead of a 4 wheeler so I ride all the time really. These curves look managable for me but i don't want to jump in and floor it just yet. Should i try it slow or something else anyone?
One hard thing to learn riding twisties is not to fixate on the rider/s in front of you.
Planning on making the ride down there sometime soon! Worth it?
If you're gonna ride it the whole day in my opinion yes if you are cruising through yes but to make a trip up for just on ride no
Do you run the sound off your mic cause you have almost no wind noise from the camera. I have a side mount and all it does is pick up insane amount of wind noise.
Juiced Z "I hate riding roads like this cuz you have to go so freaking slow" haha you should send him an invite n change his mind
Hey chaseontwowheels! Love the vids! I've been wanting a motorcycle for a while but never actually enough to get one until recently. Right now i'm stuck between chosing a ducati monster 696 or a Honda CBR500R ABS. This will be my first bike. i've been on a gsxr and a ducati monster already thanks to my friend. I know in the long run it'll be cheaper for me to go with the cbr, but the monster is just so damn attractive! I guess i want someone to talk me out of getting a monster, cause that's what i'm leaning most towards!
Ducati monster ain't not a good bike for a new rider, not to mention how expensive it is, try using cbr 500 first.. and then upgrade to 600cc bikes
thanks for the response. I can afford the ducati and handle it quite well. I thought I stated that I've used a monster on a few occasions, but you're right about it being expensive. at least compared to a cbr, it just feels much more comfortable and powerful lol thanks for the advice tho!
\
***** I second that. I got a ducati Multistrada 620 as my first bike. easy to handle but too much damn money just to maintain it.
Switched to a yamaha fz09. couldn't be happier...
This is a weekend party waiting to happen
going next week
Here in Pennsylvania that is how every road is. You learn to run them flat out by 22 years old...If you make it.
Flat out..lol
Having lived in WNC for 29 years (I am 56) I didn't know about the Dragon until I got a bike 6 years ago. Having seen videos of it I am like whats so different than most 2 lane roads going to Highlands, Franklin, Murphy or most small towns around here? All of these roads have LOTS of blind turns with up and down all at the same time. Live and die by your skills on 2 or 4 wheels.
Aww I wanted to ride. It's been a minute since I've ridden deals gap. I live in eastern NC, so let me know if you get up this way again, if you don't mind, id like to cruise with you.
You are right though, if you mess up on the dragon, it's gonna be real bad. Hairpins galore and very steep cliffs. Good riding though, looks like you've done it before. lol
We got a decent group thatâs going to be there September 4th. It should be a lot of Acuraâs and Hondaâs mixed with a couple bikes
Riding way too close to the bike in front of you.
Nice video thank you
Is that Laura craft with you ?
I just slayed the Dragon this weekend. I got the warning ticket to prove it, lol.
Hi Chase's mom!
Yay fist time for stuffs! Lol
I went today in a Mini Cooper roadster I live in Asheville
next time you are in the area, give me a shout!
Chase i know you love holy but you should seriously consider a liter bike it is so much funner yo ride. And not all liter bikes have worse handling than 600's. I own a r6 and two buells, a 1125r and a xb12s and guess what both of the big twins handle better than the r6. But to each his own i guess
You should revisit this , with modern equipment.
Your lines where not bad. Good riding
You guys have Superbikes and The tail of the Dragon. We make do with not so Superbikes and the Ho Chi Minh trail. We go a little faster thou :)
I think I saw this on a tv show once... World's Most Dangerous Roads. Apparently a lotta accidents happen there
That is more turns than The Neurbergring race course in Germany!
What happend to the sticker project? Where you were going to put stickers on your bikes that fans sent you? I sent you one a couple of months ago! :D
