Note to anyone riding or driving on the Tail of the Dragon: STAY OFF OF THE YELLOW LINES. KEEP ALL OF YOUR VEHICLE AND YOUR BODY IN YOUR OWN LANE. It is infuriating and dangerous to come around a curve and find oncoming traffic in your lane.

I did a lot of motorcycling back in the 1970's, and I found the dragon by accident. I was touring in Cades Cove and took an obscure one lane one way dirt road out of the Park called "Parson's Branch Road". I found myself on the middle of the Dragon, riding a CB450. I also had a BSA 650, but the CB450 was more reliable, just as fast, and better on cornering. From that time on, I rode the dragon almost on a weekly basis, using it to gain access to more twisty southern Appalachian roads. I lived only 15 minutes away from the place, and had it all to myself. In mid winter I've ridden on the Dragon without encountering any other vehicles. I loved the place, it was practically wilderness and the scenery was breathtaking. I've only been back a few times, and each time I left feeling very depressed. Y'all have ruined the place and ya don't have a clue as to what it used to be. Until everybody is gone, I won't be back - there are plenty of other places to ride in the meantime.

If you're GOING to speed on the Dragon, it's best to do it in the opposite direction. Most of the route is on the Tennessee side and, once you've scoped it out from NC to TN, you can ride back knowing you won't encounter any Tennessee troopers. Oh, and STAY IN YOUR OWN LANE!

Thought you looked like one of the more competent riders I've seen in youtube clips. Mainly a good line, correct speed going into corners, not straying over, and not gunning it as you come out of corners. Was surprised when he said you were going 57.
But to those saying "bikers just want to have fun", the road is a public road with a lot of people on it with varying skills, whether they are in a car or on a bike. If there's been a lot of accidents caused by excessive speed on any road, and youtube shows this clearly for this road, the speed limit will come down and the police will patrol it to reduce accidents. Seems these changes have been brought on by the riders and drivers themselves

I rode the Dragon in 1990, before before it is the zoo that it is now.. Beautiful Road. Unfortunately it's public which introduces all sorts of problems. Including trees which don't move a whole lot if you hit them at high speed. Do yourselves a favor. Every region of the country has world-class race tracks. Most of them offer opportunities to take your bike out and ride as hard as you want to your heart's content. Better yet take a class. You'll learn a lot more and be a lot safer than doing this kind of stuff on a public road. Plus you don't risk other people's lives in the process.

Yeah like 80 year olds on trikes that ran right into a boat. They need a minimum speed on the dragon, those slow pokes are the ones that ride over the center line and kill. Cause they have no skills on their low center of gravity hogs.

The road is not much of a challenge at the very low speed limits set today...so it is mostly just a very non scenic 11 mile ride with curves and one pretty overlook.
There are lots of better rides in the area with higher limits and less revenue collection.

I've only got one ticket up there, and that was on the Skyway. Cop was nice about it, almost apologetic. I've been observed doing over 50 several times on the dragon - never been stopped. Kinda wonder why you were stopped. Killboy told me that if you stay away from the yellow and don't tailgate or really act a fool, they tend to not be too forceful. Remember, the limit was 50 back before the internet was invented and all the tourists showed up.

This looked like a pretty mild and sane ride to me. I enjoyed the tail once, in 2016. for sure I will never go again to feed the pigs. I guess I was lucky to miss this officer of the law ! leave it for the Harley / cruiser boys that are challenged at 30!

I wont own a bike, just not my thing. But...I am from that part of the country, and people around there own bikes, and their FIRST RULE when riding a bike, up in Appalachia, is ..... STAY OFF THE PAINT ! That highly reflective paint doesn't give any traction like normal road paint does, plus its thicker which will screw with a bike's traction, and then add just a sprinkle of that old " smokey mountain " moisture, and bam. Disaster. Yall be safe.

I plan on going to the Tail of the Dragon this summer with some friends. We expect to run it 4 to 6 times and riding in a group. The first few times to get used to what the road looks like and how the bends are. The final time at the speed limit as a more stretched out group. If I rode it daily to where I knew all the curves, I would consider going over the speed limit, but riding it without knowing it is asking for trouble.
