Regarding the Ballistic Fist, I’m going to leave this snippet from the wiki here:
“Despite firing shotgun shells upon a successful hit, the weapon does not drain 20 gauge or 12 gauge shells from the player character's inventory. This is the result of an engine limitation: melee and unarmed weapons cannot be assigned an ammo type, nor set to drain them. Obsidian encountered problems attempting to implement this feature and ultimately the ballistic fist has an invisible, infinite ammo supply.”
Same idea for energy based melee weapons such as the Displacer Glove, wich has a visable small Energy Cell in its model. If you were to go back to Fallout 1 and 2 (I also beleve Tactics) The Power Fist will also use small energy cells as a source of power/ammo.
yup, the power fist has an ammo count@@derdude6378
Could this be an inspiration for Ember Celica?
@@derdude6378 Ripper for fuel as well.
@@Gaz918 No idea hat you are talking about. Is that a Unique weapon in the Outer Worlds?
The Fallout 3 Alien Disintegrator reload is actually bugged and instead does the "low durability" animation where you smack the gun to put it into battery. The unique variant "Destabilizer" has the proper reload where you remove a power cell from the top of the reciever and replace it with a new one (it's essentially the Plasma Pistol reload animation)
I think it's the other way around. the reload animation has clipping and the PC holds the gun one handed while doing so. The animation for the regular disintegrator seems to be the PC pushing a button to load the next 100 cells in.
Alien Disintegrators in 76 reloads by ejecting the spent ammo off the side of gun and a new one is inserted in. Love how slick it is
I just assumed that the slap was doing something like transferring kinetic energy to recharge the accumulator/capacitor. According to the wiki, it's the unique version which has the wrong reload.
The Walther PPK gun was remodeled by the Railroad faction and is absolutely meant to be a spy gun. Thing is everyone is armed so there's no point in trying to concealed carry
Always thought of it as a cute nod to James Bond.
probably like a holdout weapon
There's never been a time in history where having a concealable weapon was useless. Even in the cowboy days when people walked around with revolvers on their side holsters all the time, there was still a huge demand for tiny little pocket Derringers for back up weapons/conceal carry
I can't remember if this is true of 4, but in _New Vegas_ there are plenty of places where you have to give up your weapons at the door to get in, and if your Sneak skill is high enough, you can retain one or more weapons if you own any that are flagged as "concealable". This can be very useful, particularly since you're often going into those places with the intention of killing someone, stealing something, or otherwise doing things that are probably going to make a lot of people want to shoot at you.
Bozar form New Vegas is a callback to Fallout 2 machine gun Bozar. It was very weird , being an .223 lmg with visual look of a classical barret. Main feature of this gun was it used very common round and could be obtained very early in the game with a bit of preparation, on top of being very good gun. So it became a sort of meme in original Fallout community
It was definitely an odd weapon even in its original Fallout 2 incarnation.
It's fully automatic, firing a fairly light round, so that's a design that doesn't mirror anything intended as a sniper's weapon in the real world.
Presumably the bursts must be fired at an extremely high cyclic rate, perhaps with some form of recoil compensation like the AN-94, to reduce shot dispersion from recoil/muzzle climb.
Even if that was the case, it's .223/5.56, which isn't a great round to use as extended ranges (compared to a full sized rifle round).
They made it auto accidentally then decided it was too fun to 'fix'.
Great video! Can we get him reacting to the guns of Armored Core 6? I can only imagine how he'll react to the car sized Spas-12.
I'd love a chance to see John respond to mecha
I believe Metal Wolf Chaos would be a better choice, due to the insanity of it. And I do believe it has a massive Spas 12 in it too.
That sounds ridiculously awesome! I need to pick that game up sometime soon.
Metal Wolf Chaos is the funny meme option, Armored Core has several distinct armament companies in it with their own mechanical/aesthetic themes that I'd love to see him work out.
@@marijuanaknowsomething6743 it's by far the most american game ever made that's never been released in USA made by Japan
the protagonist is the President in a USA-themed mecha.
To be fair the shishkabab (flaming sword) is made of vehicle parts.
Its a lawnmower blade cut down and with an edge added.
The handle is a modercycle handbreak (and handle)
The fuel is stored in a motercycle tank and attached using its fuel ljnes and a pilot light for a flame.
Its a garage sword
They shouldve shown the fo4 shishkebab because it looks waaay cooler
One might also argue for the rotating gatling gun that the amount of power being pushed through the laser means that it would overheat from a sustained fire; therefore the cycling/rotating allows for more rapid fire (as surmised) but also increases the cooling due to the airflow around the laser.
the in-universe reason is that shooting multiple lasers from one barrel would damage the gun that's why the laser RCW from New Vegas has such low durability
@@littlekeg03That's actually a really good internally consistent reason for multiple barrels on a heavy laser-based weapon.
Still doesn't explain the spin!
fewer parts -> lower weight @@cykeok3525
@cykeok3525 it spins because of how the capacitors work. Laser guns use capacitors to generate the laser but after firing the capacitor needs time to recharge or else the laser won't be as powerful. The laser RCW has multiple capacitors inside that spin while you are firing. So the Gatling laser is designed to fire one laser from one barrel and then spin to allow the capacitor to recharge and it puts less strain on the gun by only firing one laser from one barrel.
@@littlekeg03 With a ballistic gatling weapon, the spinning motion arguably makes the ammunition feed and breach actions and so on easier, but with a laser gatling, there is no such requirement that I'm aware of, so a fixed cluster (think quad-barrel shotgun, but without scattering the beams) firing in sequence with cooling fans might be much less complex (and probably smaller / lighter weight) for basically the same result.
The idea for the gatling laser is that if you fired a regular laser that fast the heat would expand the focusing crystals causing damage loss at least
The transition from high RPM laser to high RPM flash light / disco ball
The silly part is the need to have a rotating assembly rather than simply a focusing crystal on each barrel. The Fallout 3 and NV gatling laser didn't need to rotate; it just had multiple diodes firing in sequence.
@@MediocreHexPeddler I guess the intent was to have the spinning barrels act kind of like a fan, moving the hot air away from the barrels. Why they couldn't have just put a fan on the model to the same effect is probaly just rule of cool.
@@MediocreHexPeddlerThe centripetal force would help to stay on target.
@@mushyroom9569 It's a laser, it's recoilless already. A stationary non-rotating array wouldn't need any help staying on target.
Anyway, how would centripetal force (which would be pushing the barrels outward during rotation) help it stay on target? Do you mean some sort of gyroscopic effect?
I would love to see a video covering some more of the New Vegas dlc weapons like the Red Glare, Shoulder Mounted Machine Gun, LAER, Automatic Rifle and K9000/FIDO Machine Gun.
Highly agree, don’t forget the survivalist’s rifle! Not that there’s much to say about it compared to the ones you brought up.
And the Super heated cosmic knife. I used the cosmic knife almost exclusively in Dead Money. It shreds Ghost people.
Can’t wait for Jonathan to react to some of the guns of starfield, there are definitely some interesting ones in there.
i like the idea of antique firearms being semi-modern to us.
@@bigbrexitdad879Are there recognizable 20th/early 21st century firearms in the game?
If so, that's kinda cool!
@@cykeok3525 Yep! There's are a bunch. There's an AK, a "Trench gun" style shotgun, the AS VAL, and others. Starfield calls them "Old World" guns.

@@cykeok3525 yes, so far I've seen an AK, 1911, VSS Vintorez and a pump shotgun either a mossberg or Rimington
Please do the Killzone series. Jonathan will love all the bullpups!
Small Arms Review has an article on the Thompson aluminum frames. Apparently the plastic furniture was something developed by Savage at the same time, but it was noted it didn't hold up to the heat and became slippery when wet. It also had problems with the cold. The aluminum receivers also had problems and couldn't hold up to the 20,000 round testing.
imagine having a Jonathan Ferguson and Zach Hazard 6 hour podcast on guns
with the garand or the "battle rifle" the reason the ping was delayed is because that was New Vegas' solution for early reloads, the clip just magically flies out of the gun, allowing the insertion of a new clip. they've just reused the empty reload.
Honestly I would love to see a video of the guns of Cruelty squad, as a lot of the guns in Cruelty squad are old experimental Cold war firearms that never caught on and I would think it neat to see a video on them!
The flamethrower in the Fallout universe is using petro and ethanol based fuel, ethanol making it blue. Makes sense in the world, gasoline and diesel/kerosene would be hard to come by in a post apocalyptic, mainly nuclear powered society. And you can make methanol at home from distilling wood.
I really want to see Jonathan break down the guns from The Order 1886
One of these days your prayers will be answered, believe!
Keep posting, brother. Jonathan and Dave can't ignore you forever.
I'm surpised Jonathan didn't mention the Mondragon Rifle when talking about the Fallout Manwell rifle. It was a firearm designed by Manuel Mondragon and while not exactly identical to the Fallout gun, the name and certain design elements (drum magazine for example) are pretty good indicators on where inspiration came from.
A note on the gatling laser is that it parrots the automatic laser weapons in general, in that they all, in F4 and beyond, use there gatling-style rotating chambers.
The obvious answer being that it is a limitation to their rate of fire, which makes sense, as presumably, they'd need to charge their capacitors between each shot. Thus, by making multiple capacitors, each independently charged, and put on a rotating chassis, you end up with a faster rate of fire than you would normally be able to attain.
So in the cycle of rotating, each barrel fires once, then charges its capacitor, before firing again.
The gatling laser was a rotary weapon in fallout 1, 2 and tactics too.
I always kinda thought the shishkabab had liquid fuel running along the blade, and the blade was kept relatively cool by the flowing fuel but when you hit something it splashed burning fuel all over it.
I always wondered how accurate the weapons in Fallout are to real-life counterparts. Jonathan's insights are fascinating!
My favourite thing about Jonathan is that he is the only expert you see in these types of videos who understands the rule of cool.
“It doesn’t make sense, but it’s cool”
Good to see the Royal Armouries still around loved going there when I was a kid one of the best history museums/events in Leeds 👌🏼❤️
I think the deliverer's slide not moving may have been an issue with the recording, (perhaps the recording was done at too low framerate to capture it) i was just playing Fallout 4 today and the slide definitely does move. it's just very fast (as it should be).
12:30 With the flames and checkerboard paint job, that thing kind of looks like something the Orks from Warhammer 40k would field.
The thing about highly corrosive "super-acids" is that there are indeed one's which won't melt through glass (like Hydrochloric) and also one's which won't melt through certain plastics (like Hydrofluoric). HF will melt through glass, but nothing based on Fluorocarbons, such as Teflon, polyethylenene, most natural rubber, and neoprene. However there aren't any super-acids that share both properties. It's either one or the other (glass or fluorocarbons).
They should have shown him Salt Upon Wounds Power Fist since that is pretty much exactly as he described the Ballistic Fist
5:15 It firing on automatic was a bug in Fallout 2 they decided was very funny so they kept.
I absolutely love getting your expert opinion on guns from this game. Fallout is one of my favorite games and I side-eye the guns often (like the suppressed pipe revolver?!). Less questions is better I have found, but what a way to educate while entertaining. Thank you for making this video :)
24th week pushing for a Resistance, E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy or Darkwatch video! I'm absolutely sure Jonathan would have a BLAST analyzing the guns in those games, especially E.Y.E.
Nice, love E.Y.E.
Idk why a majority of the fans dislike Fallout 4’s over the top and wacky gun designs because I feel they just add to the charm of Fallout
I think the issues most fans cite involve how the guns function rather than the design of the guns themselves.
While there are plenty of left handed firearms in history, Fallout 4 doesn't include any of them. The devs wanted players to look at the reload, but in turn the reload also covered most of the screen making them look way worse than they actually are.
I like Fallout 4, but half it's guns are just really funky and kinda take away from the immersion.
It'd be great to see Jonathan take a look at the guns from the Devil May Cry franchise
I think he'll walk away immediately when he notice, that Dante never seems to reload Ebony and Ivory.
It is a delight to hear the phrase "caning it" (around 5:42), I've not heard that one since the 00s.
There's ALSO a Walther PPK-ish handgun in Starfield... as well as an Itacha-ish shotgun.
Can't wait to see his take on Starfield's guns.
I'd love to see a video on the weapons of Armored Core 6. Yes they're comedically massive but the game's design language clearly draws inspiration from real world weapons that I think Mr Ferguson would appreciate.
Given how much this video featured a third-person perspective, the insane sci-fi guns of Warframe might be really fun too look at. The game even features a mode where you can have a free-camera with slow-mo to showcase them a bit better even thought there is no first-person mode in that game.
Fallout 76 is going criminaly under-reviewed. I mean, the pepper shaker, the Gatling plasma, and all the new black powder and Gauss weapons are crazy.
17:05 I actually really liked your pronunciation of Aluminium. I almost didn't even notice, it's a nice compromise imo
13:36 -- The game lore version for the Deliverer Pistol being a Walther PPK is that you find it on the body of The Deliverer, who is a famous Railroad operative. The Railroad, of course, being an homage to the Underground Railroad network of operatives that helped slaves escape to freedom in the slavery-era United States.
The Deliverer was supposed to be a legendary operative who often overcame seemingly impossible odds in the service of the Railroad, and finally met his match fighting off a large group of Coursers (basically superhuman android operatives in service of The Institute). He's a clear homage to James Bond, and thus is wielding a well-loved and well-maintained Walther PPK as an homage to 007's preferred sidearm.
I'd like to see Jonathan react to some of the fallout gun mods and see if he can see what's right and wrong
he did that already bro
Wished he would react to Fallout 76 guns. At least after Atlanta DLC is launched.

Did you check all the dueling pistols yet ..you did say you would.. cool show. Thanks for your content .
I've played with some water guns that do have some felt "recoil" to them.
Some examples (all Super Soaker brand): the Super Soaker 300, which had a fire hose style lever instead of a trigger; the Super Soaker CPS line (the 2000 in particular) had a stream of water that @ 1/2 inch in diameter.
Admittedly these were not the norm.
would love to see a reaction to some Command and Conquer guns, Renegade mainly but if some of the RTS ones could be looked at too thatd be awesome!
I personally would like to see a video reacting to the various weapons you can craft in the Dead Rising games, even though only a few could be classed as "firearms".
He is reacting to some of the unique guns that have different names the silver shroud is called the 'submachine gun' in the game for the normal version
Probably should have noted that that flamethrower is meant to be a unique version known as cleansing flame, the normal flame thrower in the game actually doesn't have the triple barrel
The Fallout videos are always a blast to watch!
Gamespot, I’m a brand new subscriber to your channel, and found you through the CZcams algorithm suggesting your videos! I cannot wait to see what you have in store for future content!
The audio is so much better in this video compared to the last one
Pushing as always for you guys to have Johnathan cover Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and to cover the M8 and MRI Caseless specifically as well.
Ammunition for melee weapons was a feature Obsidian was planning to use, but ran out of time
The gatling laser makes sense in my mind.
It appears as though each barrel is the functional part of a laser rifle, the focusing crystal and energy projector. To direct enough energy to be lethal, it would have to also likely give off quite a bit of heat. Having multiple of them in a rotating array gives each rifle a chance to cool, and enhances the cooling effect by rotating them.
I would like to see Jonathan reacting to the weapons of Warframe.
The weapons could be divided into their own respective factions like Grineer, Corpus, Tenno, Infested and Sentient weapons.
Ya. I want to see the pain at looking at grineer spot welded monstrosities.
I love the comment that the Shishkebab would just cauterize the wound.
I like this video! The Fallout universe has many interesting weapons, some concepts of firearms we've still to invent today.
The Bozar rifle looks a lot like the Heckler and Koch G11 rifle. It's boxy, it's rectangular, it fits a big scope, it looks futuristic yet 'classic'? I also can't help but feel like I've seen it in a Wolfenstein game. Maybe even Warhammer 40k, it's definitely a rare and interesting concept weapon.
Funny you say that, because the G11 was in Fallout 2.
You might be thinking of the Marksman rifle from Wolfenstein: TNO.
@@bshap495 You might indeed be right! It does resemble it quite a bit. I can also see the shape of the Stürmgewehr in it, which makes a lot of sense. The magazine is straightened out though, which changes the shape. Also a bit of FN-Scar H can be seen I think, mainly due to the rear grip and magazine shape.
The Bozar is based on a Fallout 1 & 2 gun. In those games, which were both turn based, it gave you all the benefits of both a precision weapon and a machine gun. It was a late game "Super Weapon". It was added to Fallout: New Vegas as part of a later DLC primarily for nostalgia and fan-service purposes.
I´ll never get bored of these :D
Jonathan, a directed energy weapon needs a substantial power source and run that massive amount of energy through the weapon and out the emmiters. this would dump massive amounts of heat into the system and result in huge overheating issues which the modern military is currently struggling with handling. allowing more some slight cooling and not constantly firing out the same barrel could extend the firing time before overheating occurs.
Fun fact about the silver shroud SMG, it was originally a prop gun that you have to fetch for in a quest in order to get it into a firing condition.
No there is a prop, but the one you get is one Kent made himself, made even more obvious by the fact you don’t actually need to grab the prop but still get the actual weapon
Can Whoever is showing this man weapons from games actually show him the vanilla unmodified weapons without skins for the love of god?
17:02 with how hard it was to get aluminum back then for a while this would be like a gun made out of solid gold covered in sapphires
10:18 it was a scrapped concept, but the intention was for those to use ammo
Best use of that wrist mounted gun is in Inglorious Basterds for sure, lol
Jeez louse, aside from the melted handguard on that aluminum Thompson you have there is absolutely gorgeous. 😍
Fallout flamers are supposed to be burner style with a very short range and INTENSE heat specifically to get through power armor if I remember correctly.
I’d love to see Jonathan react to 7 Days to Die’s weapons. There’s some quality handmade jank in there, along with some weird interpretations of extant firearms.
We still had those mittens for our M2s when I was a Marine from 2003-15
Maybe the gatling lazers runs on mutiple super compasitirs? Then it spins around cooling and charging up for the next burst?
I love that Dave shows up more and more in the videos. He has great chemistry with Jonathan and he explains him how some of the weapons were actually intended to work in the game and what stand behind the designs from a gamer perspective, giving Jonathan more insides on the weapons themselves and explaining us even more how these guns work and what can be compared to in real life.
I dont like it. hie detracts from the gun expert
@@noises4978 In the first videos of Firearms Expert Reacts, Jonathan definitely did lean more on giving expert opinion on the firearm regardless what the devs were thinking about. Now he still gives us his expertise about weapons and understanding what stands behind it. I like it better that way.
So on the Gatling Laser. What I think it is lore wise, is that they wanted a large heavy duty mounted/power armor laser weapon. Something good for hosing down groups of infantry, destroying light vehicles, and general suppression duties.
They found that mounting a single laser optic was very quickly burning it out to reach the optimal firing rate for the weapon.
So, the weapon spins, and it gives the optic just enough time to cool down and be reset before the optic comes in contact with the power source, connecting the leads, giving the laser module the energy to output the laser blast.
We know it's effectively using the standard LAER laser module, so that module probably isn't rated for the fire rate and power output.
And what's cheaper than building an entirely new laser module pattern?
*Just bolting more of the modules on it*
Jonathan should break down the weapons from *METAL GEAR SOLID 3* before the remake comes out.
So many weapons in MGS3 to react and comment on like the Patriot's infinite ammo magazine, the EZ tranq gun, Snake's customized officer M1911A1, Snake whittling the pistol grip to use a knife for CQC, Ocelot's SAA juggling skills, The End's paratrooper tranquilizer Mosin Nagant, the Davey Crockett recoil-less nuclear launcher and Eva's chinese mauser clone.
There are so many more other interesting trivias and weapons in MGS3
I would love to see his reaction too the Two-step goodbye. lol
Using Xenonauts 1 as a reference, the rotating barrels on the gattling laser are a reference to cooling them by spinning the radiators and making it a heavy weapon and therefore a game balance accuracy penalty unless equipped with augmentation. It's hand wavey but in a way that at least tries to justify the existence of a game balance element.
i always imagined the vial getting shot on the acid soaker, dousing the operator themself in the acid
7:02 I think I read somewhere that in real life you can only use a flamethrower for a few spurts before you're out of fuel. Can anyone confirm? Do flamethrower solders have backup tanks for more uses if so?
Ive made a flaming sword, as long as you use softer untempered steel it works fine. Cant ruin the heat treatment if it doesnt have it. Turns the blade purple though
Would have loved to see "that gun" from New Vegas!
One of my favorite iconic guns despite being from a movie haha
Will Jonathan Fergusson react to Armored Core 6 Guns? Could be fun
The M1 Garand was also chambered in 308/7.62 by the US Navy.
They didnt buy M14s initially, and just wanted a way to convert relatively cheap Garands to 7.62 NATO instead of buying M14s they didnt really need. The Mk1 I believe, with the Mod 0 being a chamber insert and the Mod 1 being a brand new barrel, both using a block in the magazine to take up the extra space since 7.62 is shorter than -06. They eventually did switch to the M14, some are still used as line throwing guns as well.
I think a review of pavlovs guns would be really cool as using guns in vr requires lots of precision with recoil and ion line-up
@13:00 - Huh. I never noticed the lack of the giant battery backpacks in Fallout 4 Gatling Lasers.
That is because the fallout 4 gatling laser uses fusion cores as ammo
i never got much use because i lived in power armor for nearly the entire game
and you will run out of power if you use both power armor and the gatling laser
14:50 I suppose the reason to have the PPK in Fallout is just that it's the James Bond gun.
Indeed, but Jonathan's observations still stand. The reason James Bond used it was because it was compact, despite its shortcomings.
Adding an extended barrel and a large suppressor mean that advantage is lost, which means it no longer compares favorably to other semiautomatic pistols.
10:00 in fallout 1 and 2 you needed energy cells to use the power fist type weapons
Look forward to him reacting about STARFIELD!
7:48 I kinda wished Jonnathan had commented the rletivley realistic rear-sight of the model, as it is usually portaited very wrong in video games.
Any chance you'll do the guns from Ghosts of Tabor any time soon? It's another VR one that I'm curious to see if the sight apertures are at all accurate!
In my opinion the problem with Ghost of tabor is that the sight pictures are too realistic and as a result you lose the sight picture in full auto on a handful of weapons. Alternatively you have a highly reduced FOV thanks to sight protectors or lack of painted or illuminated sights
Im disappointed he didnt talk about the "Assault Rifle" from 4.
Although, Zach's take is pretty hard to beat
Legit love to have this kind of job.

I am once again asking for your support in having Jonathan review the weapons of the Killzone series.
Could you guys cover more of the KF2 guns? You literally skipped over the different reload animations (depending on the perks you have) and majority of the other dope guns.
I’m still wanting to see The Division 2 CMMG Banshee
I'd love to see some of the Armored Core 6 weapons! Really get the Firearms and Artillery a flex.
Ooh, yeah, anything more 'artillery' related might be a nice change! I'm interested in the big stuff just as much as the small stuff, but there seems to be less material out there on those. Mech games seem to offer a nice middle ground where both sorts of experience are relevant, as both actual vehicle weapons and personal weapons are likely to be influences!
good to see both fallout 3 and new vegas being covered
Should get some EDF weapons like the Space Laser for the next collection
Can't wait for the guns from Starfield reaction!
Fallout 2 had the original Bozar and it looked so cool. It was basically a Barrett that couldn't be fired single fire, it was I think 15 rounds a burst, 30 rounds a mag. It made such a scary sound because you knew that when you heard that, you might be wearing a great armor and still hear the flesh ripping sound when a single burst dealt 3x your health pool of damage. And when you gave Marcus Bozar half of your team might be done in a single burst of friendly fire.
Gatling laser was also so cool in Fallout 2 that you'd gasp every time you found one somewhere. The Fallout 4 one is quite a joke in comparison. Ballistic Fist is also quite lame compared to the power fists of Fallout 2.
