WHAT'S THAT FISH? Target species ID for UK, France & Northern Europe Spearfishing

  • I know how hard it is to try and identify fish from books or photos online where the fish have been dead for hours. When spearfishing we see the fish in their natural environment which can look drastically different to when they are out of the water. I have put together this video to help new and old divers to be able to identify the common target species you will find in the UK and Northern Europe. Don't know a thick lipped mullet from a golden grey? This is the video for you!
Many thanks to the following people for helping with this video:

Stopping on some rocky formations on the way home to get some fresh wild oysters. Those were the good times.

I didn't know until quite recently that a ballan wrasse of 6 to 7 lb is probably about 25 to 30 years old, I use to keep the odd 1 or 2 to roast whole over a driftwood fire on the beach and just pick the meat off the fish and I thought they're very tasty but since finding out about how long it takes b4 they hit breeding age etc I'll be catching and returning in future but that being said if people are taking them for the table and not just for pot bait then that's fine with me as they're certainly not over fished in the UK.
Great underwater footage btw, and very informative.

Best way to prepare those is while they still alive, deep fry in butter or lard with lots garlic fish seasoning and little lemon juice 💕

Hey Daniel, I’ve watched many of your videos and really appreciate how you’ve shared your experiences in such a high quality cinematic way.
Coming from the warmer, fish abundant and generally clear waters of Australia, how come you’ve chosen to live in the UK?
I live in New Zealand and dream of free diving places where the water is clear and temperatures tropical.
Keen to hear the attraction of the UK.

Too many species to cover. It would take a full time job to be able to film everything!
