How I swim over a mile offshore solo for spearfishing

  • I've been getting loads of questions recently regarding my float setup for spearfishing. I've taken this setup up to 2.4km offshore without any problems. I'm not saying you need to go that far to find fish but it certainly opens up some areas to shore divers who don't have a boat. Hope you enjoy this one!

    Dan, I thought I would take the time to let you know how big of an influence you have had on my life. About 4 years ago I started watching your videos and you have taught me and made me totally obsessed with spearfishing. You are one of the biggest inspirations in my life as your videos have taught me most of what I know about the sport. I started a CZcams page a couple months ago, mostly to have as a personal diary and dive log of my experiences. Would love for you to check it out and critique my videos as I am sure there is plenty I am doing wrong. Please continue the amazing videos! Anytime you drop a video I am sure to stop what I am doing to watch and learn! Love your solo shore dive videos in the UK! So awesome!

    This video inspired me to do a similar trip, letting me discover many new local spearfishing spots! I used my phone for navigation (in a waterproof, floating case), and Crocs for trekking to the cliffside entry point, but otherwise our setups are pretty similar. Swimming through the open water without a visible ocean floor, and then suddenly arriving at an underwater mountain peak, offering a prime diving location, was thrilling! Provided that you pay attention to short-term current- and weather forcasts, spearfishing this way can be incredibly rewarding! Thank you once again for your inspiring videos!

    Great video. I spear fish from the coast and have used my boat to get out further afield. This year hasn’t been a great one for spearo weather and the bass where I live have become mostly schoolies. I can see the appeal of swimming out to marks offshore to get big fish, especially when you don’t have access to a boat. I can also see that you know what you’re doing and have some serious breath hold skills. For the benefit of others I thought it might be worth emphasising safety a bit more in videos like this, since many novices will try to emulate you. I’m also lifeboat crew and work at sea for a living, I can’t help but risk assess your operation. Swimming out that far you are really at the mercy of tides and weather. It may be worth mentioning some safety advice such as informing someone of your plan and when you intend to return. Taking with you a phone and/or vhf or at least a few flares. Having a plan if you lose your float or fog closes in. Checking the weather and tides etc.
    Great fish you had there and well worth the swim out. Good luck on future dives.

    Two things:
    1. I do a lot of shoredive spearfishing, and if you don't, you might not really appreciate the athletic ability it takes to swim over a mile out and back, in strong current, and still have the energy to dive and spearfish once you're out there! Without being REALLY sure what the current is doing out there, I wouldn't start that far out if you're new to it. (I am definitely not going that far!)
    2. Appreciate the explanation of your setup! I do this with a paddle board (not standing, just swimming on it like a surfboard) and I love the ability to just get up and lie on the board between dives to catch my breath sometimes. But if I had the money, I'd probably invest in something like this - it looks ideal!

      @user-wh2oo4wh8v Před 9 měsíci

      Yeah agree.

      Sharks do not eat humans and rarely attack. You a LOT more likely to be killed by a wild moose (via a collision wuth your car) than by a shark while swimming.
      That said, while sharks do not eat humans and do not actively hunt for them - a shark may take a bite out of a human if it mistakes it for prey ( mistaking them as a seal while a person is on a surfboard, for example, from a bottom view) which is the reason for a good percent of shark attacks.
      Sharks, btw, also do rarely attack out of curiosity. I believe I read somewhere that starvation is also anither trigger.

    Great video Daniel. In Jersey (the Crown Dependency, not the USA) we use the tides to our advantage. If you jump in 2hrs before low the tide will drag you out off the SE coast. When the tide turns it pushes you back to shore. It generally means a 4-5hr dive and never gets much deeper than 4-5m but I will regularly do 4-5 km on a dive. The 12m tides do help 😏

    Another one to mention is Banks Boards. They're not inflatable so it's like a mini kayak for your torso but I've seen them hold up well in surf here in California.

      They look pretty good! Would be interesting what sort of speed you could get swimming on them. I can average 3km/hr on mine which is a steady sustainable work rate. If I’m pushing it I can get to 3.6km/hr.

    Great footage and not something I would do alone. You can't swim out too far where I live in Florida, as you'd take a big chance at getting run over by a boat. A kayak would serve you well.

      @@DanielMann I have a Best Hunter Okipa 3 Board and the only thing I do not like about these boards are their flimsy valves. They leak air all the time. Last summer I inflated the tubes to max and super glue the valves. I was happy until the weather got colder. As I have inflated and glued the tubes when the air temp. was around 40, the tubes got deflated (due to temperature difference) when the air temp dropped significantly in winter. The float did not had too much buoyancy to begin with (even though it is one of the bigger ones but not as big as the patrol) so with deflated tubes the buoyancy got even worse and did not support my weight. I got the float as I always do shore diving and until recently my closest diving spot was a mile offshore. However, I quickly found out that doing a supported swim with these floats is not the best idea in Cyprus summer as the temp got up to 45 an water temp up to 31. I only can last few minutes swimming supported with the board, then I had emerge myself to water to cool and prevent a heatstroke. I was hoping them it would be more beneficial in winter but with the current condition of the tubes it is not. However as a good news, one of the companies came up with better inner tubes with better looking valves for a similarly designed float. So I am hoping if I can get hold of those inner tubes the float would be more functional. But if I am buying a new float next time it would be a dropped stitched body board type one. There is a chance to attach a powerful electric motor to those as well (check scubajet) which should really help getting me to the dive locations without increasing my hear rate.
