    As a 60 + year old spearfisher a have been diving for 50 years I would say slow down, not in the water but in life. A day on the water is a gift even if it's blowing or dirty take a minute and give thanks. And remember the ocean is not your supermarket be respectful and do not take more than you need.

    Lots of good advice. I am 66 and was a competition spear fisher 51 years ago. .My advice is 1) Go on days that are nice weather. Don't get desperate and get in a marginally dangerous sea. If it looks a bit dodgy don't go. At best it will be unpleasant. For me spearfishing should always be an experience of beauty, wonder and excitement. On rough days do apnoea training in the pool so you are ready when the sea is nice. 2) I wish free diving courses were available 50 years ago. I did a level 2 course in 2020. It taught me a lot about my personal physiology, why relaxing is so important, why hyperventilating is bad and how to rescue a blacked out buddy. I highly recommend a level 2 course for anyone starting out.

  • @VanIsleOutdoors
    @VanIsleOutdoors Před 4 lety +4

    I've been spearfishing for more than 20 years and here is my tip for beginners: Invest in a good float/buoy. There are multiple benefits to having this piece of gear. it allows you to ditch your gun if a big fish runs into a hole or off into the deep, or you can rig your spear break-away style if you're expecting big fish. Beyond that, it provides a place to hang your bag or stringer which puts some distance between you and any sharks or other toothy critters, rather than having fish hanging off your belt. A pretty alarming run-in with a very angry moray trying to get a fish that was on my belt is actually what got me to buy my first float.... Probably most importantly, having a nice big float with a flag on it will make it much less likely for you to get smoked by a careless boater (they're out there and you know it). It can also be used as a low-tech training tool. If you know the length of your float line is 75ft, for example, you can clip off the line at 50ft to limit your dives to a depth you know you can handle safely, allowing you to incrementally progress your freediving and minimize risk. finally, if you and your dive buddy happen to drift apart for any reason, you'll have a much easier time tracking eachother down in the chop. If you're not using a dive float yet, you definitely should.
    Cheers from BC.

    The one thing that I wish someone had shared with me when I first started spearfishing, was stay away from women that weren’t comfortable in or around water. They will draw you away from doing the things you love for far to long of a period of time and when you want to get back into it, they won’t understand the expense of getting back into the sport.

    Ahhh man those tidal streams. This is really important. It's unreal how fast that water can get moving... The first time I got stuck, I tried swimming towards shore. I figured my fins could get me there, but the streams kind of pull you to their centre. You're going to go where it's going. The thing is, too, that as you get closer to shallow water in the stream it can often begin to move even faster. As I pushed myself closer to shore I was getting exhausted, and I was only moving faster, and eventually I was pushed into a narrow rocky area and I was seriously flying. I got pushed into all kinds of sub-surface and surfaced rocks, wrapped up my lines in rock and seaweed, and generally got my ass handed to me.
    Long story short, don't fight it, but if you need to, don't aim for shallow water! It gets so much worse.
    The second stream I got caught in was no big deal. I just gently finned back out to deeper water and once I hit calmer waters, I went to shore and walked (a really long walk) back to my car. Not great either, but so much safer

    I know i pick up some of the most change life dive advices,
    1- know how to hunt.
    2- clear your ears.
    3- take it easy and slowly.
    4- buy a good gear is something crusual for your dives.
    5- observe and pay attention.
    6- have fun.
    7- have fun.

  • @WheresTheFun

    I started spearing out necessity. My dad dropped me off in a little coastal town with a tent when I was 16 and sent me $20 a fortnight untill he broke up with his mrs. I soon realised spearing was my best way to get a constant feed. The most important thing I learnt is you don't need a $500 gun, reels, new dive rs and the best goggles, i wore 2 wetsuites I grabbed for 5 bucks with a cheap 2nd hand kmart dive set and a hand spear. I studied the fish in my area. And was able to keep a constant feed of fish to keep me full. Best advice I can give is any hair at all in your mask will cause a leak and to give new goggles a good clean with some toothpaste to stop them fogging up. The amount of people I've seen selling their new mask at garage sales because it keeps fogging up is amazing.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  Před 4 lety +1

      I don’t understand the fogging issue either, I’ve always cleaned my brand new masks with toothpaste and a good scrub. Never fogged up on me. Like you say, any gear is better than none. I’ve seen some guys in laughable kit still out fish many guys.

    Luckily the North of Scotland is uber quiet and I have had a couple of sneaky dives. Sea is still a bit cold for life to appear inshore and there is hardly a crab about as yet. I'm not a Spearo , but Guillame Nery , the French champion Freediver is only eating Steamed Vegetable before diving (nothing too greasy !!). I would also personally recommend Yoga and "Prayanama" as part of your diving discipline . It will make a huge difference . Don't be daunted about Yoga , if you can do only 5 to 10 "Asanas" (postures) and you do them well , it's good enough and you will feel quickly the full benefits . Hope this can help..

      @@DanielMann Yes, I happened across those last week. He (Justin Lee) and Mark Healey did the same boat dive the other day and had a similarly productive day. Healey said he is intending to put out a lot more spearfishing videos, btw.

    GREAT STUFF - but my advice is golden as well... (PS: Love your videos Daniel!)
    What I would have wished I knew was not to buy those ridiculous 2-part diving wetsuits that requires powder or oil to get on! That is so oldschool and today there a great 1-piece full body wetsuits that are so much better and has a nice soft skin inside of them, takes 10 sec to put on absolutely effortless and does not require any oil or powder. A 2 piece wetsuit is such an old technology no one should own that today and put themselves through the misery of putting one of those on

      Bruh my guy its because the rubber skin keeps you Warmer and no Water gets in.
