    Why these straight six are running logs? Eill bigger exhaust manifold with a some sort of merge-in pipes, sort of semi-tubular manifold won't give her more power because of lower backpressures and better flow?

    • @SheepInACart
      @SheepInACart Pƙed 4 lety +1

      Having seen dyno runs before and after on a different sedans diesel turbo i6, not really, back-pressure is exactly the same measured after the collector and power is within margin of error. On a turbo motor you want to maintain as little change in velocity (and as gradual change in velocity) between the head and the turbo, which means putting larger diameter collectors on isn't necessarily advantageous.
      Likewise its important for turbo cars to keep as much heat in the exhaust as possible, not only does any losses to the engine bay raise the under-bonnet temperatures, but as the exhaust gas cools in a constant diameter pipe it decelerates, which results in less energy turning your turbo for a given amount of back pressure (and thus less power/worse response). The factory cast manifold has less surface area than a tubular design, and its materiel/thickness provides more insulation than you'd expect (not as much as heat-wrap for sure, but more than lightweight tube) so its very good at keeping that heat in. It is also designed as two separate 3 cylinder collectors, not a simple log as it first appears, so interference between pulses isn't a big deal like it would be on a historic design. The rearmost collector merge angle looks terrible, but this is because BMW chose to make the total resistance (thus flow) of every cylinder the equal, and so the 90 degree bend does this much more space (thus heat loss) efficiently than a more intuitive equal length design.
      A naturally aspirated motor is a bit different because its desirable to try and extract energy from the exhaust. Towards this end a noticeably larger merge pipe than the collector tubes is used, and the inertia of the gas entering the larger pipe causes it to briefly pull a (relative) vacuum on the other collectors, which can help with scavenging at a particular rev range (thus volumetric efficiency and resulting power for a given temperature, assuming the motor can handle the increased combustion pressure). The important thing to remember is this isn't "better flow" its actually doing work with the exhaust gas, thus reducing the available energy for a turbo, thats just not a problem if you don't have one.
      All in all because they planned to make many thousand cars the OEM spend quite a lot of time optimizing, so even though they have a lower expected power and budget per part, don't automatically presume the stock parts to be inferior to aftermarket, very often while you can do better (especially when willing to make other compromise like noise) its not economical to re-invent the wheel, the same money on other systems like inter-cooler or high pressure pump can make far more difference to your power.

    • @nemilostivu
      @nemilostivu Pƙed 4 lety

      Turbine size IS ( dictates) your backpressure. If pipe is larger than turbine exit is useless.

    • @DarksideDevelopments
      @DarksideDevelopments  Pƙed 4 lety +2

      I think there are gains to be made optimising the manifolds for flow and power rather than emissions, but these cars are packaged pretty tight, and the stock manifolds do just work, but it is a trade off between cost and reward. I don't think we will see massive gains so is it really worth it?

  • @kashsantos12
    @kashsantos12 Pƙed 3 lety +2

    Does anyone know which years this 430d version was made with the solenoid injectors and big turbo. Was it during 2013 to 2015 phase 1 years. Decent high spec well looked after 430d are on sale for 15k these days. Sounds like a bargain. Especially if Darkside can tune it to 390hp. Must be well fast.
    Also there is the ride height and drivetrain to consider. 430d's can be rwd and the m Sport lowered 10mm compared with SE or Luxury versions. 435d are xdrive and 15 mm raised up plus the extra 75kgs of 4wd gubins. So the 430d is lighter, rear wheel drive, 15k compared with a new 440i costing 54k and its 25mm lower.
    Also after unblocking the exhaust filters and remaping it, how much better is the fuel consumption ?
    My 3 series improved loads, about 15mpg more on the motorway afterwards. My sisters fabia 1.6 tdi 104hp used to get mid 70s mpg on the motorway at 65 to 70 mph. After a full delete including the pussy cat and a remap, it was doing over 100 mpg. My guess is after full delete and remap the 430d would give over 70 mpg and maybe kiss 80 mpg cruising in 8th gear around 65 mph.

    • @MrAndrius12

      Typical diesel engines do not have a throttle valve. So the air fuel mixture varies all the time with a diesel depending on where the throttle pedal is at. So what you have to look at is fuel quantity as diesel engines always breathe more than they need.

Straight piping could also help as some soot stays trapped in the catalytic converter and some in the muffler, so removing those two could increase smoke from the rear to an extent. • @soraaoixxthebluesky

      Riste Kostadinov at idle Diesel will run at around 80:1 AFR and full load full throttle the engine will run at around 22:1 (if I’m not mistaken) to limit the amount of PM the engine produce. The typical Diesel engine can actually run at around 10:1 this leave you with huge room to increase stock power and some tuners can double the stock horsepower figure without even open the hood. But at this point you will have to face the high possibility of your piston turning from solid to liquid.

    Does anyone know how the big turbo effects low down torque at motorway cruising speeds. In Europes 2 lane toll roads, I have to accelerate from 100kph (60) truck speeds back up to 140kph (88) cruising speed (cameras dont flash until above 144😉) all the time on long journeys. 8th gear is 72kph per 1000 rpm. So im doing lots 8th gear pulls between 1300 rpm and 1900 rpm when I overtake trucks. A remapped 330d has about 200lbs at 1300rpm and over 400lb at 1900 rpm.
    Does the big turbo make less torque at those rpms ?
    Is there a different turbo in between stock and this 2273v that doesn't loose low down torque ? Or gives more low down torque ?
    I dont mind sacrificing a few top end horses to keep or improve the low down torque. Mine has a full emission delete, egr cat dpf.

    Just sold an F30 330d xdrive for a f30 335d xdrive ive since mapped the 335 to modest 350bhp so the torque figures are in a safe realm of ZF manufacturing guide lines.
    I’m a little disappointed the 330d was so much more responsive the car was also standard. Given the choice again I would get a 330 over the 335 they are just as fast and so much cheaper.

    • @3261carl
      @3261carl Pƙed 4 lety

      100% the 35 is twin turbo a lot smoother power delivery as a posed to the 330 being single which is more responsive.
      Granted you can get the 335d mapped to 380hp but it takes the torque to 730nm if I remember correctly.
      Before someone says the 335d must have something wrong with it the car has 18000miles so it’s highly unlikely and the mapper didn’t find any issues on a pre check before the map was applied.

      No diesel road car needs to omit loads of smoke for maximum power, if it smokes the engine lacks the air flow. I have been building a compound charged fiesta 1.7L diesel using an M90 supercharger and a darkside gtd2872 turbo, I am expecting 370+hp of smokeless power.

    • @BkSMedia
      @BkSMedia Pƙed 4 lety +3

      The smoke you see out of tuned diesel cars is un-burned fuel from the cylinder and is instead burned in the exhaust. It's caused when the lambda reading is close to or less than 1.3.
      In order to gain more power from a diesel the lambda has to be below 1.3 which is where you get exponential smoke pouring out. To get the absolute max power out of a diesel the lambda reading has to be close to 0.85 but at that point you'll be putting soot into the engine oil, a lot of diesel in the engine oil not to mention the amount of carbon deposits coming out of the exhaust BUT NOx readings would be low.
      As Ryan has said, careful tuning is required to borderline between max power and un-burnt fuel.
