Who am I?
I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 16 years and been singing since I was 17. I teach from my own studio and via Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I have studied every voice technique there is, including Speech Level Singing, Estill, Bel Canto, Robert Lunte, London College of Music, ABRSM, Ria Keen, Kim Chandler, Stevie Van Lange and many more. Not being funny but "oversinging" seems to be a very American tradition (that UK singers have picked up bad habits on too - but it's pure "showboating" of vocal prowess - flashy and not particularly wonderful)

I didn't know there was a person on this planet that could maintain her tone for so long with a single breath (even with the use of the diaphragm) but other than that in the specific video I didn't have the chance to appreciate her as a performer .

Mariah is the only "oversinger" whom I don't mind. She's extremely skilled, and creative enough with her runs that it keeps me on my toes, rather than being annoying. In my opinion, she's allowed to do it because she's the queen and practically put that style of singing on the map (yes, I know many others did it before her, but she made it popular and mainstream).

Lol Christina never passed 20 secs
that At Last performance she does she holds the note for only 8 seconds without taking a breath, which in music is almost an eternity. Try belting out a note at full volume and see how long you can hold it, it's not as long as you'd think.

So Hyang's voice is too shrill to fit into gospel, though. It sounds screechy and doesn't really rouse in the way that singers like Yolanda Adams "take you to church."

I like how you critique these singers. People would expect that if a singer is famous its always an applause. But thats not always the case. They do unnecessary runs to look impressive but sometimes it gets exaggerated. They can still do runs but theres a better way on how to do it right without sounding trying hard. Great reaction!!

Also some background information about SoHyang. She is a 40 year old gospel singer from South Korea who developed cervical cancer at the age of 20, making her infertile. She used this pain to devout herself to singing to heal others through her voice. She sings for god, and god only, and has declined many record labels because she doesn't want to be tied down by anyone. She also had 6 vocal lessons from Seth Riggs, who was Michael Jackon's vocal coach.

Say whatever you want but Xtina at 7:30 was awesome. I've always loved those runs, she's unique.
I think its ok for mariah cuz she showcase that note when music stop, we can called that acapela moment. But its different at silent night by beyonce and the other it heard over run while piano on really unnecesary on that slow song, and others the way they butcher song with screaming, gargling and yelling its not proper and unnecesary cuz that not heard like soul singing style.
God that Xtina run/riff is unbearable musically. Yes, technically good but it's the epitome of oversinging.

Rachel’s Ferrell is the only jazz pianist and trained vocalist here - the woman with the 25 second hold. Her yodeling was part of the improvisation at the end of a rather epic song, “With Open Arms”. She does Mariah’s range in a jazz setting, while playing piano mostly. She uses whistle notes to “scat” as if she’s a trumpet. That was that part at the end after you paused it.

The difference between oversingers that should be allowed to oversing and oversingers that shouldn't be allowed to oversing is if you can tell what the lyrics are or not when they oversing.
That one by Sohyang was really old before she became famous....Her recent ones will blow your mind!!!

Hi Georgina (sorry if I misspelled your name)... 2:19 is Rachelle Ferrell who is a phenomenal singer, she's been around for quite some time now but has not had the type of success and notariaty that she truly deserves but if you search on CZcams, you will find a extensive list from her own songs to tribute performances. One of the tributes that stands out for me is Anita Bakers Been So Long where she duets with Kem another great (male) singer.
