Who am I?
I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 16 years and been singing since I was 17. I teach from my own studio and via Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I have studied every voice technique there is, including Speech Level Singing, Estill, Bel Canto, Robert Lunte, London College of Music, ABRSM, Ria Keen, Kim Chandler, Stevie Van Lange and many more. I have been around!
In 2008 I wrote the Vocaltutor Guide, 21 set lessons for singing teachers to get started, learning to teach, and produced 3 vocal exercise CD/Downloads.

Rachel Ferrell aka the siren, is such an amazing vocalist. Yes you oversings and does a lot of facial expressions. Her range is so untouchable with so much control

About Rachelle Ferrell , i think she could be considered more like a "vocal performer" or "experimenter" instead of a common singer , she always use to go on flageolet or over sharp register or low one . At least she has a 6 octave range !
I don't think Jessie J over sings in a bad sense. Both her and Tori are similar in the sense that they walk up to the line but never cross it. Mariah is the epitome of this. She has a perfect ear for what to do, when to do it and how much to do without over doing it... good judgment.
I agree with Mariah... Jessie does too much, especially early Jessie However , in recent years she's waaaaaay more controlled....
I would say Jessie knows she does too much. She'll often laugh or giggle when she does. Still love your opnion!! Mariah has a great awareness and navigation of her voice as does Tori. Mariah's ear is one of her strongest arsenals.
She does sometimes way too much runs/riffs. It sometimes takes away the emotion of certain songs in my opinion (Whitney's covers).
Yes!! Mariah is the perfect example of someone who has an amazing voice & never oversings. She always always respects the melody & structures of the song. That’s why I love her!
Mariah is the queen of subtle vocals, Tori is fine, but Jessie overdoes it, she pushes too hard.
I noticed a lot of these are reality show contestants, so I think they're trying to show everything they're capable of rather than serve the song.
If the listener forgets what song is being sung than you know there’s too much over singing.

Rachelle Ferrell aka piano siren lady is an impressive singer. She can do anything she wants. Last time I checked she taught singing at a university in New York I think. She shapes the sound with her mouth and just doesn't care what it looks like lol she just goes for one specific sound and does it

Rachelle ferrel, oversinging is her personal style😂 she loves to oversing, some people might like it but some don't. But who cares, I like it though😂

People say Christina Aguilera I say, include Sohyang and Dimash dont get me wrong I mean both are great singer but when they do high notes its just Over-Highnotes there a lot of AAAAHHHHHHHH or YYYEEAAAHHH. ✌
But they don't do it too much though.
Personally I’ve never understood the Sohyang and Dimash comparisons. Just because they’re both Asian and both like to sing high notes, they’re suddenly the same? The average Dimash song range at this point is probably like E2-G5-E6 while Sohyang rarely ventures out of the G3-B5-D6 range and doesn’t strain ANY of it. Sohyang tends to be a much more restrained performer than Dimash. I enjoy both, but Sohyang I love and Dimash I sometimes find to be a bit TOO much. Not a fan of his higher belts and frequent vocal fry.

love all of your videos!! As a new subscriber, I HAVE to talk about a very nasty comment I saw on one of your other recent videos... I follow several vocal coaches who all do reactions, and yours is by far my favorite already. You are just so sweet and fun to watch. Yet you always manage to give the most balanced and unbiased reviews of the vocalists you watch. The way you explain the techniques and such just makes it so clear for me to understand. My point is, don’t listen to the haters out there. They must feel like you’re “bashing” their favorite artist or something. It’s not true. I have something new to look forward to on CZcams now so thank you! :)
I can relate. I think some singers just love the song so much and they just really want to let go. I've had that urge for the need to belt out a high note at karaoke but that's when I pick a song for it and make sure I can pull it off.

Sometimes "oversinging" is actually quite nice... like Jessie J or Xtina make the song so much more than needed, but in a GOOD way

Soyhang and Xtina are my biggest oversingers . I also must say that Soyhang is one of my favourite singers. She over sings but gives me goosebumps
I'm new to this style of singing. I'm 70 years old so I'll try to be nice. When I listen to these singers I just don't understand why all the screeching. They are so talented. Why can't they just sing? My least favorite is Dimash. But I do get enjoyment listening to them. They are amusing and makes me laugh. And I love your reactions. The first reaction I saw you do was Amira singing "Amazing Grace". You've got a fan as long as I keep my sanity!

“Oversinging” is the alternate perspective to “they have the range”. Range isn’t always good or appropriate

I'd like to see a video with examples of subtlety in singing.
The 2nd video is Jennifer Holiday. She is the original singer of And I am telling you, she is the original Dream Girls. She the reason that song is Iconic and MANY singers mimic her version of the song. Some legends you have to respect.. and KeKe Wyatt is the singer in the 5th video (I believe) and she was singing a church. In church you are allowed to embellish, it’s encouraged to do so.

People say Christina over sings but after seeing this she does not 😂 I honestly don't like the term over singing though because people use it when it's just adlibs. I don't mind someone who adlibs a lot as long as at the tone stays consistent, there is no strain and it's in tempo.
