- The Smith and Wesson 41 has got to be the easiest gun to shoot. They are fast and forgiving.
This particular S&W 41 is the gun I learned how to shoot on.

My model 41with the 7 inch barrel has been with me for 30 years and I purchased it new and I still have the original box and all the paper work. I have shot probably in excess of 50,000 rounds of all types of .22 lr ammo from Walmart bulk pack 22 lr ammo to higher end target match ammo.
I never had any issues and even with cheap ammo I got groups of well under 2 inches at 25 yards. Some ammo will shoot groups you can cover with a quarter at 25 yards. Nothing ever broke all original parts and the trigger pull is about 2 lbs as well and of course now well broken in.
Thats the funny thing about 41's they just eat everything you feed them.
I have my father’s Model 41, purchased January 9th, 1959. I actually have the receipt, still in one of his range bags. The gun is everything you say, unbelievable accuracy and reliability. Amazing gun!
Saw an older guy shooting one at a range a couple weeks ago. Nice enough to show it and explain it to me. That gun is massive and impressive. His was $1400.
I just found a smoking deal on an older 5 inch model 41 in great shape. It is everything it is claimed to be. I have only fed it SK pistol match ammo
so far. Feeds flawlessly . For me, doest make sense to use cheap ammo in such an accurate gun.
Love mine, bought used in 1982. Picked up a 5.5 in barrel from Midway and put a red dot on it. Amazing to shoot!
Yes, the Model 41 is a jolt when you pay for it but you forget about the cost when you’re at the range!
Over the years, I’ve owned three with the longer barrels. They’ve all been tack drivers! My current 41 is about 3 years old and it’s a shooter for sure. My only complaint is that the finish is not as nice as my older ones; I was told that Smith altered their bluing process some time back; unfortunately, it’s simply not as deep as the older ones.
On the other hand, since 41’s are range guns, I’ve always wondered why Smith has never offered a stainless version? A stainless 41 would find a path to my gun safe in short order, LOL!
Great review, thanks for posting!
Ordered one a couple days ago. 1990 model. I've always loved this gun. Finally have one coming. Good video!
That's awesome man. I love the old .22s! My dad taught me on his old High Standard .22lr revolver
22s are so much fun. I had a friend growing up that learned on a High Standard .22lr revolver.
Interesting video, I recently picked up one made about the same time period yours was made but mine has the 5.5" bull barrel. It has a couple of small problems that I will take care of because I'm a successful kitchen gunsmith on numerous other weapons including the FAMOUS GERMAN LUGER (replaced the recoil spring on one and the breach block, tougher job because of the precision fitting of the part). I'm a TINKERER from way back (71 years old). The grips appear to be aftermarket because they don't fit correctly, can't imagine it leaving the factory like that especially considering the quality of the rest of the pistol. The rear sight needs a little attention (looks like it was DROPPED). There is a small area on the slide that has bluing missing, I think I can do something with that.😁👍 KEEP up the good work making videos.😀👍🙏
Keep me posted on your progress. Eventually I will do a "deep cleaning" video on this pistol. Thanks for watching!
I just did recieve one 1970-71 Long Barrelled, Thank You for the input!
Congrats on the acquisition. These are awesome guns!
I have the same version 7” barrel and the same sights.i do wish the rear sight was dovetailed so I could swap it for a red dot mounting plate.
After taking a few shots with my friend's M41, I ran out and bought a brand new M41 PC version. Love it.
They are amazing guns.
Does the longer barrel makes it more effective?
I found that my 41 will not shoot CCI target very well at all. She is a finicky eater, prefers the high dollar Eley target stuff. Fed a diet of these and she's a tack driver.
This pistol looks good to the eye, feels good to the hand and shoots good when fed properly. Of the many old S&W's I own, this will be one of the last I part with.
I bought one in the 80 ;s and like it a lot!!! 😊😊😊
Nice!
Picked one up at a show last year. It was formerly owned by a competition shooter. Duke something? Came with both slides, the 5-1/2 has a rail for a lightweight scope or dot for longer shoots. It is incredibly smooth. Have the original box as well.
Nice Find~
Great vid, bro . About 5 or 6 years ago I was fortunate enough to find a mid-60s production model at auction. It was like brand new, and it came with the standard 7" and also a 5" upper with a giant old red dot. I think I paid 1200 for both, and it has been amazing. That's more than I ever thought I would spend on a 22 pistol, but it's been worth every penny. It's definitely one gun I never plan on selling. I have fired some newer 41s, and they are nice, but they don't stand up to the older ones. Anyways, thanks for the content 🙏
That's awesome you got an older one! I agree that the newer ones are nice, but, they are not as good as the old ones! Thanks for watching!
I agree with you about the OLDER PISTOLS by different companies that are better than the NEW ONES. The problem IS most people don't have PRIDE in their work.🤔😱😮💨 I've got 2 old Colt PRE-PYTHONS that might not look as pretty as the NEW PYTHONS but they are NOT as good, I went by my FAVORITE gun shop and checked out the new Pythons and I WAS NOT IMPRESSED. MINE 6" Colt 3-5-7 is a tack driver with CCI BLAZER BRASS 38 SPECIAL 125gr FMJ, ONE HOLE AT 25' INSIDE OF A 1" RED DOT AND LOOKED LIKE ONLY 3 HITS INSTEAD OF 5. 🤔😯😳😵💫😉😁👍 BY the way I bought a 41 made in the late 70's recently. I was having trouble pulling back the slide. Turns out it must have been sitting for a LONG TIME, DRY AS A BONE. AFTER THE OIL SOAKED IN FOR AWHILE IT'S MUCH EASIER, THANK GOD. I THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE HAMMER SPRING because I was having trouble cocking the hammer with the pistol field stripped. Shooting GREAT NOW.😉😁👍
100% agree! That is I can’t afford a Hammerli or Pardini…that being said I’ve never had “fun” shooting my friends “Olympic pistols” and the S&W 41 is both fun & super accurate. ❤️ the vids!
Hammerli and pardini price is thr same as 41
Hammerli Xesse is cheaper than S&W M41.
I am in the process of buying one right now. Looking at several from the 60s and 70s.
I think it is a general consensus of the community that the older ones are the best. Hope you get one and enjoy it!
Snagged ser# 435xx. Probably from 1963/64. :) @@TheRogueBanshee
What ammo were you using?
The S&W Model 41 is the last pistol I would ever give up. I shoot it better than any other handgun. From a rest at 50 yards, it shoots like an open sighted rifle. It will easily take small game at .22 LR distances. The fit and finish is how all handguns should still be made. Only accurate handguns are interesting.
I plan on getting one, just trying to find a reasonable price.......Not !! Great vid. buddy.
They are expensive. But man do they run SO nice (at least the older ones do).
Would I go buy one? Yeah, I just did today! Made in '59 or '60. Question for you sir? Mine looks like the back surface for the front sight (facing the shooter) looks like it might have been gold plated at one time? Do you happen to know if S&W did this on some models? Maybe it's just old paint.
They are awesome guns! I personally have not seen one with a gold front sight. Maybe you fond a unicorn?
I have the model 41 that was handed down from my father. It came with a scope (which is not really my style) and it is very accurate and fun to shoot. I was wondering if anyone had a problem with it jamming. I had it at the range and it jammed up on me a few times. I went home and cleaned it really well. Haven't tried it since. It could be a bad batch of ammo (Winchester LR) that I bought from Walmart when 22 was almost impossible to get. It was very dirty with a lot of unburned powder. Anyway, Just curious if anyone experienced the same problem.
This gun gave me problems when I was a kid, but as an adult, I learned how to clean it better. That being said, I did have some problems with American Eagle about a month ago in the gun.
Thank you. I'm going to give it another round with new ammo after my Cataract surgery heals. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again.@@TheRogueBanshee
Just got a 41 that has never been shot built in 1979. Shot great over 500 rounds . Got a failure to eject with dirty barrel and failure of trigger to reset so got dead trigger a couple of times when dirty. Thought it was me shooting quick and not releasing trigger to reset or just dirty or both. But wow what a great gun.
I just looked in a forum and saw that a large number of people are having a problem with this gun. Almost all of them said they went to CCI SV ammo and the problem went away. What ammo is everyone else using with good results? I was using the Winchester but some of them (20%) were misfires with good strikes. A bad box. Still have some.
Yes, Problem solved, so far, for me. I noticed the CCI Standard Velocity has a flat surface on the cartridge rim and it's a hair deeper. I went through 50 rounds (CCI) and not one failure to eject. With the Winchester and Remington, I was getting two to three failures to eject with every ten shots.
I have a chance to buy one that was made in 1971 with a near perfect finish for $ 1075.00 . Is this a good deal ? Thank- you.
Depending on condition, that is probably close to market value. 41's are on the expensive side, but worth it.
I think Ruger mk4 is better and half the price. Custom service will actually help u, not those from s&w custom center...
I 100% disagree on which is better, the S&W Mdl 41 has all other 22's beat off the finish line. That trigger is so soft you can think to fire it and a round is going down range.....
Agree with @benk4881
Absolutely no comparison to the Ruger Mark4 or 3, or 2, or standard. The 41 is top shelf. I've owned mine for years with the 7" and 5 1/2" barrels both for 20 years. I've also had a Mark 4 and 3 and traded them both away. I still have MK11's but they have volquartsen triggers...pleasure to shoot but not close is accuracy or cosmetics. The model 41 is sexy and shoots like a dream.
