Politics aside, the secretary of energy has fabulous hair.
Haha best comment eva
😂😂😂😂
+ExRayBEx yeah, from the the 18's century!
+ExRayBEx He's also got the smarts that allow him to get away with that hair cut.
+ExRayBEx I say Patrick Kennedy is the one with good hair, but Bill is having _another_ very-bad hair day.
Bill was tasting his foot a bit tonight.
+Luther Beckett Oh yeah definitely and that kinda why I like him. He's not afraid to put his foot in his mouth a little. But it seemed like he was shoving it down his throat tonight.
+Chad Mcfab Totally agree. I see him as a liberal version of Bill O'Reilly, Both in personality and they way he runs his show (though not to the same extent as Bill O'Reilly). His saving grace is that he actually has common sense and he's funny.
+jon henry Holy shit where did you learn to write? Are people supposed to actually try and understand what you're saying?
***** Anyone who is headstrong by nature is going to sound dumb as time goes on. As a listener you have to take what you like and ignore what you don't. Thankfully, unlike many headstrong TV personalities, Maher and his show has many redeeming qualities and he also is a good counter to mainstream/corporate media.
You both are just really bad at trolling. This isnt even funny. Both of your comments swings between sad and stupid. It would be really nice if you guys just quit.
Jeez, Bill is so off on the "rehab" issue.
+Henrik Karlsson yeah big time! It shows he has no understanding or even empathy for what might have been happening. It's smug shit like this that keeps my opinion of Bill sinking lower and lower.
+dirty_ cop Hey, all of his guests took him to task tonight. I thought at one point, Andrew Sullivan might have made him so pissy, he might have thrown him off the set.
+Henrik Karlsson He's noted Mets fan. He's probably very reminiscent of the 1980's Mets that had Darryl Strawberry, Doc Gooden, Keith Hernandez, and maybe a few other guys who were into coke and booze. They managed to win a World Series and had a good run.
+Henrik Karlsson No you are. There is an offseason in baseball. Unless someone's addiction is completely debilitating, there is no reason a person can't wait a few more weeks. A day before the playoffs? I don't think so.
+MrSinister718 And maybe that addiction was debilitating. Bill certainly didn't know.
Say what you want about Rob Thomas, but who else could pull off wearing the same denim jacket for 15 years?
+Casey Wilson I hate his earrings, but otherwise? He's cool as hell.
+Jake Jones He's definitely not a sellout though. Dude's been rockin the same look for a long time, and it's not fading or getting old.
Gotta give him props for that.
+Casey Wilson who is rob thomas?
"Life is more important than a game." YES!
After a couple of weeks of pretty good episodes, I think Bill was behaving off tonight. His attacks during the conversation on mental health were very personal and unwarranted. And he needs to get off his high horse of Clinton.
word .
+oneviwatara Obombma? Did your troll belly accidentally hit the keyboard?
+oneviwatara Please tell us all what drugs you are on so we can avoid them. Or is english your 4th language?
Ok, sure. Everwhat say you.
Ouch! A little harsh even for you Bill, referring to your exchange with Andrew Sullivan regarding his mom. I don't share any of his views either, but that was a little hard to watch.
+Joanne Lawrence it was perfect for a sanctimonious schmuck who used to advertizse for bareback partners knowing he was HIV+ back before there were reliable treatments available. Andrew Sullivan isn't fit to shine Hillary's shoes.
+Joanne Lawrence Did you want to hear more about Sullivan's mom? If this was hard to watch, you really should stay with The Today Show
+sgarystewart he's not the one running for presidency.
+sgarystewart He advertised it with FULL disclosure. Big difference.
+valgehiir He was making a legitimate point that without the pharmaceutical industry, he would be dead today. Bill was the one who made the broad, sweeping generalization and that's what Sullivan was checking him on. And in typical form, Bill threw a hissy fit and went for the ad hominem rebuttal.
The secretary's hair is just fabulous
Energy Sec. Ernest Moniz seems to really know his job.
I think Andrew Sullivan was totally right about Hillary Clinton, but of course, Maher kept refuting with empty arguments like "she's boring but not bad." Also, he was really insensitive about Sullivan's mom. People in the comments are right; Maher was really off his game tonight...
I think part of it was Bill feeling like he didn't have a good comeback to Andrew's criticism of Hilary (which he didn't) and tried to get a dig in on a completely different topic. And it was the most insensitive time to do something like that, especially when Sullivan was talking about the stigma that mentally ill people go through. Bill illustrated that stigma perfectly with his asinine comment.
+Movie Muscle I've been fairly outspoken against Hillary (go Bernie!) but I think Sullivan went way too far with his criticisms. He went from making a few fair point to just throwing out a bunch of nonsense and insults. Once he got to mentioning the emails, he completely lost me on this. Though, Bill answered with the same sophistry he's been using for weeks now.
+Kaleb Adams I think Andrew raised some solid points and Bill didn't have a good refutation. Yes, the right and media have been blowing the email thing a little out of proportion but as the highest official in the State Department, she knew she should be using secure accounts and servers to handle official information. It's not nothing that she chose not to. And she flip-flopped as usual, saying first she did nothing wrong, then saying she was sorry it was taken the wrong way (a non-apology) then finally taking responsibility. It doesn't mean she's in on a conspiracy as to what happened with Benghazi or anything else that Fox "News" would have you believe. It's just a irresponsible decision by a woman who wants to become President. She has wanted to be POTUS for years now, she would have known that it would hurt her reputation if the private server became public, she just thought no one would find out.
+Logan DeFelice Now bring up George Bush and Dick Cheney`s shredding of evidence throughout that administration's 8 year period....
+Movie Muscle Depends. I agree with Sullivan that Hillary has no core convictions. She's a boring centrist and she certainly isn't against the TPP. But that's not the GOP rap against her, is it? It's Benghazi or Libya or e-mails and that's just a lot of bullshit. Also in a vote between a boring centrist without real convictions and a GOP field that is unanimously hawkish (even Rand Paul by now), unanimously against gay marriage, for tax cuts for the rich for repealing Obamacare...I dunno I take the centrist with no core convictions over the right winger with all the wrong convictions any day.
Good get for Bill booking the Quaker Oats guy. He really classes up the joint.
I think this was one of the best Overtime segments in a very long time. This had very calm and concise explanations of a variety of topics, there were no arguments, no petty partisan bickering, no out of control laughing or yelling, and even though there were some humorous quips thrown in it was diverse, informative, and intelligent. Also, the "Founder's Hairdo" is gonna be a thing very soon. Kudos all around.
Ernest Moniz killed this! I will be listening to a ton more from this gentleman
A tonne* more. 😂
Bill wasn't on his game tonight. A couple of wtf moments during the show.
Haha, I like that secretary character's hair. He looks like he's rocking one of those 17th century wigs-- pimpin!!!!
Bill was so wrong about so many things today. He was off his game…badly. He disrespected Andrew Sullivan's mom when it was tough for him to even talk about that. I understand he had to keep going on with the show, but be more smooth about it. Classless tonight Bill!
+Ricardo Chavarin He has HIV and his mom is bi-polar, sad but irrelevant. The issue was kids on ADHD meds and how easily they are prescribed dangerous drugs. Some anti-depressants actually lead to a higher suicide risk for kids and drug companies are aware of that.
+Ricardo Chavarin Andrew Sullivan was whiny and off tonight... seems like his panties were in a twist
+Ricardo Chavarin what's weird is that Bill Maher is so pro-science when it comes to Climate Change, but then he's anti-science/technology when it comes to medicine.. He isn't a believer in western medicine.
As much as Bill plays the tole of "the most liberal talk show host", he isn't. His more or less blatant endorsement of Hillary tonight proves it.
I find it funny how he's "ready for Hillary", but couldn't even name any of her achievements. During the show Andrew asked him to name a significant accomplishment, he couldnt! He then tried to defer to Anne-Marie who also struggled.
I guess I shouldn't be too suprised. Especially after considering the fact that HBO is owned by Time Warner (they also own CNN), a company which has donated hundreds of thousands to Hillary Clinton in the past.
+Votethe Bern Hillary Clinton is less than zero. Trump will trounce her if (when?) she's the democratic candidate.
+Situations103 true bernie is the only one who has the credibility and policies that can stand up to trump
+Votethe Bern he's been a hilary backer for a very long time because he knows she has a real good shot at winning
Couldn't agree more. I really wish Bill would stop shilling for Hilary. He dismisses anyone with valid concerns about her becoming president out of hand the way a lot of "progressives" seem to and doesn't even try to counter their points. Pretty ironic considering he's one of the only ones who call out people on the left for capitulating to Islamists. How Bernie doesn't get mentioned during that whole segment about Hilary's weaknesses is beyond me, especially considering he's gaining on her in the polls and he and Lawrence Lessig are on the show NEXT WEEK. For Bill to act like there isn't real opposition and competition to her from the left is completely fatuous. I used to think of Bill as being very independent and objective although strongly liberal, but now unfortunately I'm beginning to question that.
+Logan DeFelice you would think he would have more in common with bernie than hilary and be in open support for bernie on his show every week
An intelligent panel having an intelligent discussion.
Ernest Moniz looks like a character from a Dickens novel
Love Bill Maher!
poor andrew
when he said "leave my mom out of it" he sounded genuinely hurt
Bill Maher seemed really crabby and snarky tonight.
just in the mood to start a fight and not listen to his guests.
just seemed angry.
+Steve Tyler I noticed that too. Like he was actually pretty damn rude to Andrew(who is a little overbearing, lets be honest) but his whole "Stop talking about your mom!" was over-the-line. It was anecdotal sure, but Bill's entire argument was kids are kids, which is pretty damn anecdotal too.
+AngelWolf12 when your kid acts up first thing should not be medication. swift kick in the ass should be the first action.
+Steve Tyler Yes, quite more so than usual. Maybe he needs a rehab and he is not telling. (kidding)
+Steve Tyler
He is probably in a bad mood because of what Sullivan said and seemed to drive home about Hillary. He has got a point, and it is very iffy is Hillary and Trump, or anybody and Trump are debating what that is going to look like. This is going to be a really tough election, and so no doubt it puts Maher in a piss poor mood.
+Kavya Reddy what nonsense? He was right about her poll numbers falling. He was right about polls saying nobody believes her based on polls. He was right about her negotiating the TPP before she came out against it. He was right about the email server that the FBI says contained over 400 pieces of classified information (and counting). So, where is the nonsense again?
it was nice to see Pat and Andrew call Bill on his attitude towards "big pharma"
Bill, it's fucking baseball. Not the same thing as the Affordable Care Act.
Good lively episode tonight but that whole bit where Maher was dissing on Sullivans mom was cringe worthy. Cmon bill, you don't have to be a d-bag about it.
+achilleshoplite Dissing? That's a little oversensitive isn't it?
+achilleshoplite yeah, i do think he was disrespectful.
He was annoyed by Sullivan's comments on Hillary I bet. xd
+achilleshoplite I completely agree with that...very insensitive on his part...also he didnt give enough time to important topics like russia
+achilleshoplite I completely agree with that...very insensitive on his part...also he didnt give enough time to important topics like russia
"I don't think they want our support, I think they can do it on their own" EXACTLY
The energy secretary stole his hair from the American Revolutionary War
+Bryon Letterman Yes, criticize the nuclear physicist about his hair. You're a real genius, aren't you?
+Bryon Letterman Yeah, and it's fuckin' awesome. Do you know how legit Halloween must be for this guy?
+Bryon Letterman I hope while you were admiring his hair you had a chance to listen to what he had to say. He made a few very good points.
Yes. He's a very smart guy. But I'm allowed to joke.
+Bryon Letterman I agree and I would probably adopt the same position. While he looks like a fool he makes so much sense it's hard to believe he is part of any Government in the U.S. Bill made the point, sixty percent of adults in the U.S. believe the earth is six thousand years old. He has also remarked before, this is why we let the smart people run the country. Even Reagan knew this. For all of his faults, and he had many, he supported the advancement of science. It's like the problem we think we have with Islamic extremism in Australia right now and our problem is trivial compared to our big neighbour Indonesia and that hotbed of "secularism" (it's in the constitution) in Turkey. There's only one answer long term. Education.
Bill is a little off no? Not really listening to the guests carefully.
Love the guest. Everyone of them. I love you Rob!
Energy Secretary and Wonka Factory Interim CEO Ernest Moniz explains everything so well. Love how he calls out the bs misinformation in such a factual and respectable way.
You have me rolling over the floor for "Wonka Factory Interim CEO"
Rob Thomas is one gorgeous man who is really articulate and smart.
Equality in work is important, yes, but can you talk about the discrimination against men in education, in justice....
This dynastic reverence for the Kennedys is baffling.
+ZolRing
Funny that you mention it, but I don't recall a member of the BRF going to war with another country to divert attention from a sexual scandal. But all in all I'm with Mark Twain on this one:
"I urged that kings were dangerous. He said, then have cats. He was sure that a royal family of cats would answer every purpose. They would be as useful as any other royal family, they would know as much, they would have the same virtues and the same treacheries, the same disposition to get up shindies with other royal cats, they would be laughably vain and absurd and never know it, they would be wholly inexpensive, finally, they would have as sound a divine right as any other royal house. ... The worship of royalty being founded in unreason, these graceful and harmless cats would easily become as sacred as any other royalties, and indeed more so, because it would presently be noticed that they hanged nobody, beheaded nobody, imprisoned nobody, inflicted no cruelties or injustices of any sort, and so must be worthy of a deeper love and reverence than the customary human king, and would certainly get it."
+ZolRing Yeah, like amassing a fortune on boot-legging.
I want Ann Coulter back and listen to her opinions about the democratic demate.
"He's a Kennedy, hello!?" 😄😄😄😄
This was an excellent discussion.
Andrew Sullivan makes all of these points for his argument and Bill responses with, "Were you molested?" Seriously? I know Bill has a hard-on for Hillary and is part of the Bernie media blackout, but damn..Molestation? And his audience claps for molestation, but boos/remains silent when he makes jokes about women(an example being earlier in this episode). Bill was off the mark, and so is his audience.
Did you forget to smoke before the show? Did Andrew steal your bike when you where a kid? Off your game tonight. That being said, I love the piece about how we are so wrapped up in capturing a moment on a phone, mostly to show others the cool shit we do, instead of actually experiencing it. We are taking advantage of these experience for social gain but at a big personal cost.
really good point by Sullivan (about writing)... I had to say it once in my life...
The Secretary of Energy's hair looks like it belongs in the 1700's xD
where's the part bill maher insults sullivan's mom?
+Anil Nair I'm confused about that too. People are furious in the comments, but it doesn't appear to be in the video. Maybe the people running this channel edited it out?
+Fuloqwam That exchange was during the show and not on Overtime. Basically, Maher is of the opinion that we over prescribe medication to kids. He wasn't necessarily insulting Sullivan's mother, but saying that we rush to medicate and don't take into account that people can just be assholes. Sullivan made it personal by bringing his mother's issues up. I took it as a simple disagreement. It was a tad uncomfortable to watch, but I didn't feel it was insulting at all.
generalnsj
Thanks for clarifying.
I'm a vocal Bill Maher fan, but wow was he reeling with poor form and substance last night. I'm sure the smart and likable conservative, Andrew Sullivan - if he thought about it and didn't just react - would known who looked like the ass with Bill's "Enough about your mother" comment. I would have loved to hear Sullivan's profane retort. Too bad Mr. Politically Incorrect censored it.
+Barry Benton The show was broadcast live, wasn't it? How could he censor anything? I do think Sullivan was holding back a "fuck you," though. Same with Patrick Kennedy.
+Frank McManus It must have a three or five second delay, like live radio. Because Sullivan's lips were definitely moving and the audio sounded clipped with Sullivan said leave my mother out of it, at the end.
+Barry Benton No, it sounded like his mouth was readying something to say before settling on just "leave my mum out of it." If you're trying to tell me Bill made the quick and off-camera decision to censor Sullivan in the blip of five seconds (assuming there was any delay _and_ assuming he knew Sullivan's reply would be fit into such a minimised window of time), then you're breaking the principle of Occam's razor.
+Barry Benton it wasnt censored. why would it be? do you think maher cant take some trash talk?
+multitudeofidols
I did a little research on online and found that Bill's show is not "recorded live" but 'live, live.' So Sullivan's words apparently weren't silenced. It sure looked like it on video. Here's a quote of Bill published in Variety on April 13, 2015:
“Live on tape means ‘not live,’ of course. It was live at some point. The difference with our show is it is ‘live’ live. As I’m saying it, you are seeing it,” he said. “It does add an extra, kind of tightrope element to it, because you can’t take anything back or editorially fudge it. It is what it is.”
So thank you for the polite correction and interesting allusion to Occam's Razor, which I happily looked up for my own edification.
I think this is the calmest debate I’ve seen on his show
Anyone else notice whenever Kennedy spoke, he didn't look at Bill? He did that from the minute he sat down.
+Daniel Pena He's a dick who's against the legalization of marijuana, which Bill conveniently didn't bring up.
So is that secretary of energy the one that gave Shell permission to drill in the arctic? way to go, bad-hair-day!
*****
or maybe he advised Obama to allow it?
Bill Maher had a real bad evening: Bashing a guests mother, defending a war mongering Hillary Clinton, the baseball vs. rehab/life thing and so on.
C'mon bill, if someone has a problem that bad, let them go get help. His personal well being > playoffs
Anyone else feel that arguments made are stronger without the applause
When did Benjamin Franklin come back as Secretary of Energy. lol
HAS ANYONE SEEN A LEMON IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA? I can't find my lemon :/
A most civilized panel.
+mtoh The panel's host, not so much.
If a ballplayer were hospitalized for cancer or a heart attack, would it be selfish of the player to forego treatment because his team made the playoffs? Bill is wrong, and, as a person who pushes drugs as hard as he does, he should be better educated on the topic of addiction.
Great to see Sullivan again, but he and Maher really went at it in this show. We're probably not going to see him on Real Time for a while. Definitely looking forward to his book project.
Bad day, Bill? Sheesh, this was a tough one to watch last night.
Rob Thomas was just trying to tell Bill that music streaming has given exposure and fans to "underground" bands, which wasnt possible in previous decades. So that's the trade-off for not receiving as much money from album sales
Holy shit has Rob Thomas been sitting there the whole time?!!
He was pissy tn and Bill is a lot funnier when he's excited about topics and people.
Anyone else notice that Pat Kennedy sounds like a higher-pitch Jon Benjamin?
I liked the whole panel discussion overall.
Open another tab or just stop looking at the video, and when Ernest Moniz speaks he sounds like Johnny Carson.
Dude every Kennedy has the exact same face
Yes was thinking that
I think Bill forgot to take his medication.....this evening
THAT is the U.S. Secretary of Energy??? I didn't know he had Mary Tyler Moore's hairdo.
Andrew Sullivan spoke pure Veritas she cleaned Bill Maher's clock maybe Andrew Sullivan should run for some office
I love it how they decided not to post the bit when Maher loses his shit over Sullivan's mom and shuts him up :D It was in the show before overtime.
You could cut the awkward tension with a knife.
Anyone not seen it, need to find it, worth a watch.
The record companies get big money from Spotify - they're just not passing it on to the artists - THIS is the problem. It's up to artists to get better deals.
That's Rob Thomas! Matchbox Twenty! Sing a song! Shut up!
lol her last name is slaughter
Yes, I'm a big fan of Bill, but he was definitely off of his game on this night. Quick, somebody get this man a joint! LOL!!!
What the fuck was your issue tonight, Bill?
Oh my gawd, can we hear that again? "Life is more important than a game." Our spending habits would suggest otherwise.
The overtime was better than the episode. Everyone seemed a lot more level headed.
Does anyone else think that Bill looks like George Washington
Bill Maher for president
Look at history
Sullivan was complaining about people ranting and being hysterical, then he started ranting and being hysterical about Clinton. Maher should have challenged him on that, but didn't.
Sullivan is also spot on with the writing comment. I still write after nearly 30 years. But it is mostly for fun.
how do I send questions into the bill maher overtime show?
bill was of his game in this segment but forget that i can't get over the hairstyle on Moniz haha would fit right into the dollar bill or a french aristocrat during the revolution
Is it just me or did Andrew's whole mood change after Bill's "Enough about your mom!" comment? I don't think Bill meant anything by it, but he was pretty snarky about it. Andrew got quiet for the rest of the show and overtime.
can you time stamp when this happens in the vid ive been looking for it
Bill was right to compare a Mets pennant game to Congressional business and yes, it was weird to walk off a day or so before the end of the playoffs
"Everybody knows..." Well, everybody should know.
An angry, unfocused, ignorant, rude version of Bill Maher. Some of the worst interactions and arguments I've ever seen on Real Time...especially with Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Sullivan. What a chilly, useless episode. I feel poorly for the guests.
Maher nailed it with that rehab pitcher. I thought the exact same thing. You have the whole off season to get yourself cleaned up. Did you really hit absolute rock bottom right before the post season? I have known several hard core drunks that are capable of staying sober for a couple days when they really need to do it. I am sure he could have made it through a couple more weeks while continuing to drink. Just be sober and clean on game day, the way I imagine he has done all season.
Incredible...a stimulating and intelligent discussion of the Iran Nuclear Deal without partisan bullshit and yelling? That was enjoyable.
Bill misjudged it on the player's rehab issue. Glad the others put him right
If CC had announced that he was going into physical therapy to fix an injured shoulder, would Bill still think that was selfish? Would he still be saying that he should just wait a month? Somehow I don't think so. His attitude is unsympathetic and deplorable.
Nentanyahu's take on the Iran deal reminds of the movie Last of the Mohicans where the 'bad indian' is unhappy when the French and British make peace and wonders where that leaves him and his vengeful desire to keep a boot on the neck of his most loathed enemy .
1:49 He was so wrong
Say what you will about Iran. I've meet many successful, intelligent Iranian citizens who immigrated to the US who are excellent citizens, with families and established careers. They all love this country for providing the freedoms that their native land decided to restrict under a new regime.
I thought he was bringing his mom up a lil too much......
I agree with about 85% of what Bill Maher has to say on his weekly series. That's more than I can say about any presidential candidate for the 2016 elections, except, of course, for Bernie Sanders. ;-)
andrew sullivan looks like michael stipe.
How do you do? You're A Winner. number pale
I think the money owed to Iran was actually owed to the previous regime of the Shah, not the current one. No such repayment should have happened.
Hey there, Bravo! lunch tail What do you think? !!
Rob stood aggressively neutral. I used to rent and rip CDs from the library but now, get most of my music through torrents. However, I ALWAYS buy the indie and unlabelded music for up and coming artists. They need every cent.
You rented CDs from the library?
Here they lend them out for free.
does anyone else see a resemblance between Patrick Kennedy and the leader singer from the 80's group Crowded House, Neil Finn, what do you people think.....? By the way, it is the greatest song of the 1980's ...almost historical
A little disappointed by the fact that nobody mentioned that sometimes, yeah, just sometimes, people are depressed for a very good reason, an actual event or events that require human to human therapy. This is not a "brain chemistry" issue. That kind of depression cannot, should not, be "cured" with "brain chemistry" drugs, but by old fashioned therapy and human interaction.
No big jobs for parents: yes, Patrick is to be applauded for his personal choice, to be both working and sharing the care for the kids. But real equality when the big jobs are accessible to both men and women will only be achieved when it is perfectly acceptable to be a stay-at-home dad (so mom can go do the big job). This discussion shows that there is some work to be done on that front ...
