What’s really interesting is that if you look at Donny in that triangle, he also fits. Prosecutor- he blames Martha for the issues with Teri and her getting the wrong idea when he egged it on. Victim- poor me, this stalker is ruining my life, she is constantly contacting me, blah blah blah and rescuer- he says that his first thoughts when he saw Martha was that he felt sorry for her. Him going to the bus stop at 3am to wipe her nose and drive her home. Donny and Martha are parallel in many ways. Martha making up her fancy, busy life as a lawyer to impress and get close to Donny. But at the same time Donny has a whole different identity on a trans dating site and using lies to impress and get close to Teri. But Donny has redeeming qualities that Martha doesn’t. That’s what sets them apart. Donny does come clean to Teri, does update his profile with accurate information and does end up trying to report Martha. He is also not violent or obsessive. Donny is just in an active state of self sabotage.

Great observation, your right, Donny fits that pattern too. Keeley was right.
I also notice in episode 4 Donny briefly spamming Darrian with messages when he isn't getting a response.

@@AdamfromFWCI yup. He internalizes his hurt and anxiety with self sabotage while she externalizes it. It’s a really great look at victims. And I love that he was brave enough to show an imperfect victim bc a majority of the time there isn’t a perfect victim. And that allows people to dismiss what they are going thru and the victim to dismiss it too and assume they deserve it while the real monster walks around living life as normal. Like they didn’t just destroy someone.

Helpful hint for people who want to help as Donnie felt compelled to when seeing Martha sitting in the cold. Call the police to do a well check or say you are worried they are ill, they might need an ambulance.
This may feel harsh, but honestly, they are better equipped to deal with it. There are social workers.
In this case, they might even have clocked that she is an ex con for this kind of behavior. Might need to check in with parol or other supports.

I think it is so cool and really responsible/respectful to the material to bring this triangle up.
Yes, it's incredibly brave for Richard Gadd to put this story out there.
But unless conversations like this happen, it's basically just voyeuristic, true crime misery porn.
I worked in the bar biz for a long time. Once I was in management, I made it my business to address this with staff. It even happens in house between co workers.
It's a biz that attracts a certain element both as employees and customers. There is a rawness of human needs being met in hospitality. And a symbiotic relationship that is delicate. We need regulars but we also need boundaries.
Customers rightfully feel close to people they spend time with. And pay their money to. Money always adds layers to any interaction.
I tried to provide resources and ways to model behaviors in boundary setting and other ways to help without being a personal rescuer. I also would rotate people out when they needed breaks from certain customers who were becoming too attached.
I'd encourage others to do the same.

This show is as great is it is traumatizing. Episode 2 shook me in a way i've not seen on TV in a long time. Great series, very difficult subject that hit too close to home.

@sophiewelsh8619 lol why thankyou. I made that. There's a version with some eminem, Kanye and Michael Jackson vocals up on the channel.
I think the instrumental is on my soundcloud. It's called "Something Epic" because I sampled the Beatles song "something"
