- Matt Hutchins, the husband of the “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was fatally shot on the movie set, opens up exclusively to TODAY's Hoda Kotb in a moving interview. Hutchins recalls his loving marriage with Halyna, he describes sharing the heartbreaking news with their 9-year-old son about her death and voices anger and outrage at Alec Baldwin for not taking more responsibility for her death, saying, "The idea that the person holding the gun causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me."

Her life story keeps getting more and more exceptional the more we hear. What an unimaginable loss! For a woman from another country to accomplish so much in a competitive place like Hollywood and beyond is incredible and inspirational. So very, very sorry. Hope her name is never forgotten.

Alec should offer the family money to try to show his concern for this family. I know money won’t make up for their loss but it’s a way to begin to say I’m so sorry for that I did even if it was an accident. Accident or not is equal to by his hand. He s liable.

Funny how people don't get that this was not a gun in the everyday sense. This is a gun that was never supposed to have live ammo in it, was checked by professionals before being handed to Baldwin and was declared cold on set before he received it. He didn't just pick up a random gun then point and shoot without knowing or caring if it was loaded. He would only be responsible if he knew outright that the gun was loaded with something that could actually send a projectile from the barrel. In that case it would have to be a carefully planned murder because that would be the only circumstance in which the gun could become live when experts have already declared it cold. Are you really saying Baldwin committed cold blooded murder? Of course you aren't. Halyna should have been in no more danger than if Baldwin was holding a Nerf gun.
My heart aches for both him and his son. The anger he must hold against Alec especially not taking any responsibility.

Ironically it is the cinematographer who maps out each scene and camera angle. It was Halyna who instructed Alec to point the gun in her direction. They were both under the assumption that the gun was cold.

I already felt it was weird that everyone said Alec didn’t deserve to be blamed. It’s nauseating to know that negligence killed his wife and the mother of his child. I hope justice will be served for him and his son because they will always live with that grief. I can’t believe she was killed and her entire country now is being attacked. That is heavy even for people who are mentally strong. May justice, protection, and peace come to this beautiful family and all the people in Ukraine.

Baldwin could not remember Halyna's name, she was the blond camera girl. But he told the policewomen, "I am not even a gun person. I don't have guns in my home (homes?)" He's not a gun person just a gun expert. He is an anti-gun activist but he does not even observe basic gun safety that they teach boy scouts? And this was his own film.

But there is something about your family, your wife, and i can’t really explain what it is… but the love you have for her and how you talk about her is what makes me care so deeply for your family. He seems to be a bully, who can act as the victim when he feels the need to. I didn't like him as an actor and, because of how he has behaved on set with total disregard for safety of crew members and in the aftermath of shooting Hitchens, I don't like him as a man either.

I’m glad her husband is speaking honestly about this. Alec Baldwin didn’t handle the situation correctly from the beginning. Even her husband can’t stand him.
I assume Mr Hutchins has far more important things to do rather than read CZcams comments from people who don’t know him or his family. Regardless, I wish him and his son all the strength in the world and desperately hope justice is done here. Alec Baldwin is worse than negligent and his callousness upon killing and injuring two crew members is inexcusable. Not to mention the PTSD everyone on that set or associated with that film (minus Baldwin, apparently) is undoubtedly struggling with. Love and peace to you all and I am so sorry for your loss.

I’ve been so horrified and heartbroken for Halyna’s family. Baldwin took her life, but his repulsive behavior is beyond reprehension. The discussion that Halyna’s family’s attorney gave regarding the lawsuit against Baldwin was exceptional. It helps me feel confident this man will do what’s necessary to bring justice for Halyna & her family. Her death will never be unbroken, but there must be justice.
Alec Baldwin portrayed himself as a victim and his Spanish wife kept posting pictures of herself with her kids and Alec showing off her happiness after the tragedy ... How can you brag about your family when your husband just destroyed one ? They have zero decency and respect for the victim. Incidentally I saw the first interrogation of Baldwin by Santa Fe police, they sent in their weakest detectives to question him. It was pathetic. Baldwin had not even learned Halyna's name yet, and called her the blond camera girl.

It’s so good to hear her husband speak out and drown out the awful guff that Alec Baldwin was saying in that atrocious interview. Matthew does seem to have that calmness, humbleness and integrity about him. Lovely to hear the positive things described about Haylna from him. Nothing but the best to him and their son. I do hope there’s some sort of justice for Haylna.

I found it uncanny that as soon as this tragedy happened Alec Balwin was on various news outlets voicing his innocence and saying he was not at fault. I kept thinking why is he speaking to the press. I watched my mother die of cancer and I could not wrap my head around it. (Couldn’t/ wouldn’t believe it). I can’t imagine dealing with something like this and wish peace and love to this husband/ father, their child and everyone who loved her.

Baldwin was too elite, self-obsessed and cost conscious to do an industry prescribed safety check himself. That cost a life while playing/pretending to be a cowboy on a movie set.

Tragic loss for both husband and child. Baldwin made me sick when he sat there and literally took NO blame whatsoever. He shot her, that's the facts. And EVERYONE knows that you ALWAYS treat a gun as if it's loaded and deadly. I've always felt compassion for Alec Baldwin. But his continued need to put his narrative out without regard or respect to the family and investigation has turned me off. I'm very glad Matt is speaking and calling this out. It is completely possible Alec's version is correct. However something negligent and horrific happened on that set to allow this to happen. That already says a lot right there. I do understand that Alec thought he had a cold gun, but it appears he didn't do enough to follow the safest procedure in that moment. So much failure all around. Including Baldwin.

There is a long list of actors that these accidents don't happen to. Nicholas Cage had a fit when there was recklessness. I understand that Alec had his buddy David Halls doing the armorer's job. Now Alec is blaming the armorer, after he had her ff doing other peoples jobs. Because they were short of funds. Yet half the cast and crew were bringing family members, nepotism, there was casual target shooting going on. Alec was flustered because he had promised a couple of his kids parts in the film as "extras." I give Baldwin credit for having six kids at his age. But I still blame Baldwin & David Halls.

I really appreciate the way he told his son about her death. Of course he was in disbelief. Even adults can feel disbelief at such a shocking fact. Grief is such a difficult process. Such a tragedy- affecting so many lives.

I don't understand why the cops haven't made arrests
The DA is the one who decides whether or not to charge a person. Take a look at her recent press release and prepare to be disgusted. She tells blatant lies and it seems clear that she is taking Alec Baldwin's side.
The DA is now waiting for the full ATF, FBI forensics/police reports 🗂. That may be Apr or May. The state of NM labor safety 🦺 board is reviewing it too. AB may pay fines, money 💰.

The way Alec initially portrayed him and Matt as a united front togther grossed me out right away.... It reeked of trying to start manipulating people to not blame him cause not even Helenas husband blamed him. Alec has made the most horrific statements about this whole thing. He is 💯 culpable in her death.

I was taught gun safety when handing guns, the person handing it over to you checks it, then ypu receive it, and check it again. Every time.
I am Canadian, so it may be different in the states, but that is what we are taught here, and that protacol is just followed, without question..
If America has the same gun safety rules how is Baldwin not guilty?

Heart wrenching. I truly admire Matt's restraint, compassion, loving kindness. Baldwin was wreckless as an actor handling a firearm and as a Producer. Charge him and hold him accountable.
