THE FATHER filmmaker Florian Zeller and stars Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins talk about their Academy Award-winning film at AFI FEST presented by Audi 2020.
Living alone in London and nearing 80 years old, Anthony (Anthony Hopkins) has refused another nurse that his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman) has set up for him. Exuberant and independent, Anthony has struggled with his memory beginning to slip away. Anne announces she is moving to Paris with a new boyfriend, but later in the living room Anthony sees a stranger claiming to be Anne’s husband. Who is this man? Confusion sets in.
Academy Award®-winner Hopkins delivers a brilliant performance of a man with dementia, creating a powerful cinematic experience of memory and loss. Based on his award-winning play, Florian Zeller has crafted a moving and insightful portrait of a cruel disease and the heartbreak it brings.

His performance alone shattered me in ways only life can. The way his face twitches and contorts to the vile emotions the character goes through is utter magic to view. Olivia is such a staggering support to him, amplifying his act to the greatest degree possible. I wish they get all the accolades this season.

Just watched The Father tonight after putting it off as I lost my Father last year to COVID. He struggled for a number of years with Dementia. My family & I cared for him 24/7. It was very, very difficult but also incredibly rewarding to have that time with my father. I wish I had him here to care for all over again.
The one line in the movie that struck home hard for me. Was when Anthony said "Thank you for everything" to Anna.. Can't tell you how real it felt in that moment. Love you Dad. ❤️

Dearest Sir Anthony & Olivia: Watching you in this film reminded me a great deal of my relationship with my own Father. Don't get me wrong, he's still as sharp as a whistle, but, certain scenes made me feel I was Anne. I dread this and pray it never happen. I pray my Father burry me and I shan't allow him to watch it. Sorry, I shan't because I KNOW he'll be deeply affected even if he doesn't openly manifest it. On another note, Dear Florian: I just saw THE SON. My GREATEST fear lies there. Sometimes I feel my life could turn out like your tales. I pray not, but must recognize you as an ARTIST. I won't allow my son to watch your THE SON film (he can watch THE FATHER) until he's 30. Thank you for your art, I can handle it, but some of my loved ones, I KNOW, would probably relate so much to it, well, you know the outcome.

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."
    Holy Quran 17:25
    ------------------
Your Lord is most knowing of what is within yourselves. If you should be righteous [in intention] - then indeed He is ever, to the often returning [to Him], Forgiving.
    Holy Quran 17:26
    ------------------
And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.
    Holy Quran 17:27
    ------------------
Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.
    Holy Quran 17:28
    ------------------
And if you [must] turn away from the needy awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word.

Sad to see how far down Hannibal Lecter has gone... However, even after having lost most of his marbles, he still manages to remain quite scary thanks to his constant unpredictability. Even Alzheimer does not affect the need for people around him to be on their toes at all time!
