- The horror masterpiece "Silence of the Lambs" premiered 30 years ago in 1991 forever cementing Anthony Hopkins' reputation as the ultimate villain (Hannibal Lecter) and Jodie Foster as the brilliant protagonist (Clarice Starling). The duo reunited to discuss the film that brought them together and what they're currently working on for Variety's Actors on Actors presented by Amazon Studios.
“We didn’t speak too much before the actual read-through,” Foster recalls. “And as you launched into Hannibal Lecter, I felt a chill come over the room. In a way, it was like we were almost too scared to talk to each other after that.”
Hopkins admitted that when he first read the script for "Silence of the Lambs" the name fooled. "I was in London in 1989, doing a play called 'M. Butterfly.' My agent sent a script. He said, 'Why don’t you read this? It’s called ‘Silence of the Lambs.’' I said, 'Is it a children’s story?' It was a hot summer afternoon, and the script came over and I started reading it. After 10 pages, I phoned my agent. I said, 'Is this a real offer? I want to know. This is the best part I’ve ever read.' I read the rest of the script, and Jonathan came over on a Saturday afternoon and we had dinner. And I said, 'Is this for real?' And he said, 'Yeah.' I said, 'OK.' He was such a wonderful guy to work with. I couldn’t believe my luck, and I was scared to speak to you. I thought, 'She just won an Oscar.'"
Hopkins is currently starring in “The Father” (Sony Pictures Classics) and Foster plays a lawyer in “The Mauritanian” (STX Entertainment).

whoever was the one that put them together needs a raise
Two legends....
Yessss!!
That raise should be taken for not sending them microphones to record good quality sound
This is the most overused, recycled comment of all time. I have literally seen it in every single one of these actors on actors videos.
So that tells me it must be the person working for variety that is saying it!
Thank you for the love and support
Jodie waited 30 years for the pandemic so she wouldn't have to do this face to face...
In fact there is more truth in your quote than one would really believe... she really did avoid him. There was hardly one scene in the whole movie were they have really have met in person.
In an interview she did years ago she said she avoided Hopkins between takes because she wanted to keep his character as real as possible to her.
😂good one. Because it's kinda true
@@jonathanrex no. Fake news
@@windsorkid7069 Great recollection
Aww they were so cute in the way they ended their conversation.
"Bye Clarice"
"Bye Tony. Bye Dr. Lecter."
@anthony hopkins it’s not every day you see Anthony Hopkins in a CZcams comment section.
You’re one of the best actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing.
You could tell she really didn't want to say that.
Anthony Hopkins & Jodie Foster were dynamite on screen together. Two true masters of acting.
Agreed 100%
They hardly met during filming of that one...the distance was real ...and she was really scared of him
And she adores him you can see that 💗
i seem to remember reading that they barely talked to each other during the making of lambs....mostly hopkins' doing.
That's true but i skip over the buffalo bill stuff just to get back to hopkins and foster
Missed opportunity for Anthony to open the call with "Hello, Clarice".
Don’t you wish he did? Yet he’s just so truly grounded, it didn’t even occur to him to be silly- you can also tell he’s very comfortable being himself, which unfortunately, is a grail most 75%+ of actors/actresses never find, and comedians 99% of the time never do. Yet he’s still whimsical and charming and generous, and you can tell he genuinely enjoys reflecting back on his life and success
He made up for it with “bye Clarice”
A few people commented before watching the whole thing apparently.
I mean that's so ironic because he never says "Hello, Clarice" he says 'Well, Clarice" or 'Good Morning, Clarice"
@Angelbob77 so well and wise comment.
Clarice always had to talk to Hannibal through glass and now Jodie has to talk to Anthony through zoom.
Haha yeah good observation.. 👍😊
So e things never change...
Safer that way
Computers have glass screens
Jodie has the greatest smile ever! It literally makes her look 20 years younger on the spot.
Silence of the lambs is one of those rare films that are perfect, from the acting, script, direction, music, everything is top notch.
Hearts in Atlantis another of Anthony Hopkins films wants some beating for me.
Silence of the lambs is one of those movies you think is really good when you watch it the first time, then it becomes better everytime you watch it again.
Same with the books. I read the trilogy through every few years just to remind myself how good it is and every time it gets better..
I enjoyed it. Great movie
an incredible #masterpiece 🖤🤍
Indeed. Has great re-watch value. I never get sick of it
Same with The Elephant Man (in which Tony plays another doctor: Sir Frederick Treves who displays such compassion and humanity - worlds apart from Lector) it’s one I always end up watching to the end if I land on it channel-surfing!
Anthony ending the conversation with "Goodbye, Clarice" was such a power move
That was EPIC.
I loved it
Really? I think it was more that he was giving her closure. She’d been traumatized by the filming of the movie. He was saying, “it’s over, you’re good to go, get on with your life and you have my (Hopkins’) blessing.”
IMHO.
@@burnerbrecks5 She was traumatized by it? Never heard her say that.
What would have been even more fitting is if Athony had said at the beginning of this video... (as he says... Hello, Hello...) 'Heeelllloooo, Clarrriiice...' Now that would have been awesome...
Someone please put these two in another movie together. It would be an instant hit.
Hannibal, the sequel to the silence of the lambs, was offered to foster and she turned it down, so Hopkins ended up doing the movie with moore.
Anthony Hopkins is arguably the greatest actor of all time.
Of all time, I am not sure.. he is among the best of his generation, together with Pacino and De Niro.

Anthony Hopkins is a legend.
THEY BOTH ARE!
Understatement of the year
that's SIR Anthony Hopkins, my Dear 😏
5x Oscar nominee. Straight legend.
Thank you so much supporting my career....How long have you been a fan?
Jodie Foster is so comfortable with her skin and her body; any other acters will be gone under the knife many times by now. And Sir Anthony Hopkins a legend! Two legends.
I believe she and Mery Streep have said they'll never do it.
She looks awesome though.
But still look better than who did it
Jody has always been so beautiful. I’m glad she understands that and hasn’t tried to remain young
It's nice to see celebrities who would rather age naturally, to be themselves instead of following that trend of the Hollywood plastic look.
Jodie is an example what real beauty is without her youthfulness and the plastic surgeries and Anthony has the extraordinary charisma and his personality glows with wisdom and they are just amazing. Lovely actors and amazing interviews.
wow. Is that why they couldn't abide each other on set? yeah. Sounds like beauty........
Damn right. She still looks amazing. Idk why a bunch of these other actresses cant just take aging gracefully case-in-point Lara Flynn Boyle.
Good on her.
She's definitely had work. It shows around her lips. Also likely an eyelid lift. But either no Botox or it's been a while. And recently (the last 6 months), she's picked up two horizontal lines that indicate a particular kind of jaw lift.
But *it's her job* . I don't fault any actor for getting work done. They might drop $90 grand and make $3 million dollars as a result. Heck- if I had $40,000 to spare, I'd get an eyelid lift if only for personal comfort.
She's 61.
@@macmcleod1188what exactly do you believe indicates that she's had work done? I can't see anything "around her lips" nor do I spot anything on her jaw. Her eyes look natural too
Anthony actually helps me look forward to aging and all life may bring. What a beautiful human being.
Unless you get dementia ofc.
I totally get what you mean! He seems graceful and just kind. Older and getting better even in his craft. It’s a wonderful thing. I love that he’s still challenging himself with piano and anything else he can get his hands on to stay mentally active. I hope he has a loving home environment around him. I truly wish Anthony all the best.
Amen; you're so right.
Then you need to watch the irishman
She is so bloody Gorgeous.
That smile is a killer.
She is just an amazing human. Very smart but genuinely humble. One of my favorites.
I know right? ❤️
Still beautiful. Seems like a good gal too.
Makes you wonder why she didn’t consult her own grin in the mirror rather than letting Lecter spoon-feed her crumbs of information.
Got that right! Really handsome woman.
It 's so lovely to see them reunited! ! I almost started crying when Anthony said" Bye, Clarise." and then Jodie responded saying," Bye, dr. Lecter!" Amazing moment!
Darn it. Now I wish I hadn't read the comments first.
I am English and 83 and I have seen every film Anthony Hopkins has ever made…Lovely to see these two together..Thank you so much for this ..Best wishes to you both from Cheshire. England….
I always love when Jodie Foster interviews or speaks to other actors. Her comments and questions are always insightful and show that she really watched their films. She also gives them room to breathe and talk.
She's a director and producer in her own right, it's easy to see why she'd ask more informed and insightful questions
Absolutely 💯
She is fantastic.
That's why she is a genius
Jodie's a great interviewer... But they both speak so fast, especially Jodie, I watched at .75, then at .50 to get every word...
when Anthony gets happy and kinda hyper i get a big smile on my face hahah
Yes, he can be quiet an enthusiastic person for someone who is 83. If you haven't seen the video of him playing piano for his cat, it is worth finding.
@@milwaukiedave I always hoped he would release more of those. :)
I saw "The Silence of the Lambs" twice when it aired - a few weeks appart - and the scene that really blew me away was at the end: when realization hit her and after the lights went out in the killer's house. At first she reacted and fumbled drawing her gun, and soon after, the hand holding it started shaking... but mostly, it was the way she breathed... you felt the adrenaline rush, panic held in check by training, but just barely. It was truly mesmerizing.
Her acting trademark is authentic "intensity" and she's carved a career out of it. She's electric in True Detective as well - a fine return to form.
Jodie's smile and laughter is a truly healing thing!!
Agreed! Her authenticity is at once comforting and enlivening.
It’s so incredible living in this age being able to have access to interviews like this. I can’t imagine living a couple decades ago and not being able to see such a freeing conversations between actors like this. Interviews before were so curated and usually between a tv host. They still are. But here, two actors/artists can speak to each other like the friends they are.
Yes we're spoilt rotten, the Actors on Actors interviews are incredibly addictive
“Inside the Actors Studio” was where we were a decade ago although it was only solo interviews but a fantastic insight nonetheless.
actually some of the TV interview conversations in the 70s and 80s weren't that bad. Things for sure took a bad turn in the 90s, 00s and early 10s though .
@Marina E why are you acting pressed and as if the comment was insulting or untrue?
@@peterkirby7546 The Dick Cavett show interviews are priceless.
I always knew Jodie would age well, she has great skin and bone structure. As a horror fan I'm always proud that they got the sweep in the Oscars lead actor and actress that year and as a Welshman I'm always proud of Anthony
The reunion we didn’t know we needed. Iconic af
That scene when she's talking to him in the "dungeon"... She manages to convey a strong person, a confident person, and a vulnerable person on the verge of breaking down simultaneously. It's so moving.
Well you can't be strong and brave if you aren't feeling vunerable and afraid. Many think that a strong character is one that never breaks and is "perfect". You put her character in perfect words I think!
Yesss we love well written complex female characters . We need more of that.
After all these years Jodie still looks so cute and beautiful
Her insight about Clarice feeling handicapped and turning that insecurity into her superpower is very interesting and is one of the reasons she’s such an impactful hero
Too bad Jodie hasn't made more films, she is so beautiful, unique, authentic.
I suspect it's probably because she was working from such a young age - like, literally as a young child (she was the Coppertone girl) - and all the stuff she did with Disney, etc., she probably tired of it earlier than most.
amen...she is a rare gift
Also she is worth $100 million so she can afford to be fussy with her projects.
Besides, she's been busy doing non-acting work. She is talented in several areas.
She's extremely intelligent and engaged in other areas, so I think the process line of making films would probably bore her.
Hopkins is the last of those great actors, true master, not many like him left,
I do think there are still some out there who are in it for the art. Especially if you also look outside Hollywood. But sadly those movies don't get as much attention and there are WAY more ordinary actors and movies out there. Quality gets overpowered by quantity. But there are still some very talented artists left in my opinion
There a lot of good actors out there
Robert Duvall is one of those old greats too, what he did even with his supporting role in Jack Reacher was mesmerizing. I will miss him so much when he passes.
@Viliam Vacula great joke man, made me laugh at 04:13 :))
Nostalgia bias imo. There are many actors working today that will be considered all time greats. Leo Di Caprio, Jake Gyllenhaal, Christian Bale, Denzel Washington etc
The absolute master actor Anthony Hopkins, and the most talented actress Jodie Foster.
magic
Foster is a master herself.
They both live in my mind, rent free.
I recently re-watched Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal and realized that they don’t make movies like that anymore. They don’t respect the audience anymore.
They never made a lot of them.
I absolutely love Jodie! She’s a genius and such a lovely lady. ❤️
Jodie Foster is a shear genius!! Clarice is such an icon
YES! So happy Actors and Actors has these two icons together again.
When both of these actors die, I'm going to be inconsolable for a few days... when Tony said how old he was, I thought, "I'm going to be so sad when he goes," but then I looked at Jodie and gasped, thinking about everything I've seen her in, how she dominated my childhood in movies and thought, "She's getting up there too!! These guys can't go!!"
They're so passionate and authentic, it's refreshing! Extraordinary chemistry on screen and here they're so chatty and comfortable, like they're old pals enjoying an evening together after a long time. I loved the way they said their goodbyes!
Silence of the lambs is my favorite horror/thriller movie and series.
Have you read the books? There's heaps of plot details that didn't make it onto film, if you enjoy the movies you owe it to yourself to get the whole story in print. And the movies are over and done in 90 minutes, read the books and you can live in that world for hours..
star ive read all the books and yes the books go into so much more detail, silence of the lambs is my favourite film of all time and getting Anthony Hopkins to play hannibal was pure genius he played it so much better then Brian Cox in Manhunter
@@angelaw94 yes Manhunter was strange wasn't it? like they were making a really good movie and halfway through they just gave up
@@wanderinstar8838 its was the same with the Hannibal film no Jodie Foster so the connection with Hannibal and Clarice wasn't the same as Silence of the lambs ,just hope they NEVER try and do a remake of silence of the lambs 😎 am watching the documentary of it now

Jodie's performance in the Accused is one of the very best on film. Let alone the Silence of the lambs.
Agree!! I've watched both The Accused and The Silence of the Lambs many times.
She won the Oscars in both films 😊
Agree. In The Accused her vulnerability is so amazing. Even though I cannot relate to her, you care about her so deeply
She is totally underrated

1. I got to meet Anthony Hopkins when I was all of 19 years old. He was as delightful, then, as he is in this video. 2. I love Jodie Foster’s work as an actor and director. 3. The love and respect these two icons have for each other is palpable. 4. Wonderful video.
Why did u meet him? If I may ask. Tell us your story.
@@alicia.navarro8868 Long ago, in a galaxy far, far, away, I was training to be an actor in a college in New Jersey. At the time, Anthony was performing in the Broadway premier of Equus. One of my teachers at the time went backstage after one of the shows and asked him if he would come to our school to talk to us. Anthony agreed. And the rest was history. 😃

Both are immense talents and people. You can also tell that Jodie Foster has incredible intellect....she is very centred and astute. I would love to see more interview content about her as a person.😊
I have a friend that does makeup in the movie industry. She was able to get me in to meet Mr. Hopkins for a quick 2 minute "hello" and a picture. She told him that I was a huge "Silence of the Lambs" fan. When she took the pic of him and I, I was smiling. Without even asking him, he made the "Hannibal Lecter" face. Jodie Foster looks so happy, love her smile❤️
Jodie mentioned her mother in her speech at the Golden Globes in 2013 and it's the most moving part of a speech I've ever witnessed. She's very eloquent.
Thats crazy, Anthony mentioned his father in his oscar speech lol
Scott Glen was the perfect Jack Crawford and gave the movie it’s legitimacy and is underrated.
He’s excellent! You’re right. He’s underrated. He was also terrific in Hunt for Red October
Ms. Foster is finally starting to age a bit and it’s lovely. I can now feel less afraid.
Well she looks very old + old voice on top
coz she hasn't resorted to Plastic Surgeries and botox like other actresses of her age
We all get old.
@@jimcameron1234 Old? She looks great for her age.
Two class acts - what a lovely way to spend half an hour.
The reunion that we were all waiting for. This is amazing!
Jodie Foster is an actor of exceptional talent, depth and beauty who was always ahead of her peers, by the time actors of her age were in their diapers she was making commercials, by the time they learned to speak, she was making movies for Disney, by the time they starting going to the school, she was winning awards and getting nominated for the Oscars, by the time they decided to enter films, Jodie decided to leave it behind and enjoy the ivy league world which she graduated with magna cum laude, by the time her peers had their breakthrough she already had won two Oscars and transitioned to the director's chair. An extraordinary talent, who's contribution to cinema is unparalleled and exquisite. A sheer gift to the world of acting and filmmaking
What a dear, dear man Anthony Hopkins seems to be. So unassuming.
Jodi Foster seems so down to earth too!
Probably the best pairing of actors I've seen in these Variety videos. What a gift you've given us fans!
Exactly!

The route that Jodie took from being a child star, to a amazing director and actress, to her bravery with her personal life, her kindness and genuine qualities show in this interview.
Shes fair, considerate and fair. A true director.
Anthony saved me from my alcoholism, his voice and actions; from being a painter, poet, actor, addict ... his voice and soul has saved me. Hes an idol of mine. They both deserve happiness and health cause they're good people, but their work and efforts have saved my life.

This is amazing! I wasn't even born when Silence of the Lambs was released. But it's in my top ten films ever. And Antony is my favourite actor of all time. To have seen it in theatres. Would have been an amazing experience.
I can totally relate tbh
My mum, brother and I (teenager) went to the movies without knowing what we'd see. We picked Silence of the Lambs because of the poster - it had Jodie Foster and I liked the "butterfly". 😳 So we went in literally without knowing anything about it. Well we came out shocked 😂 To this day, I still think it's best way to see that extraordinary film.
@@GotTheTravelBug EXACTLY! seeing a film you know nothing about that blows you away!!! Very rare for that to happen. But the absolute best when it does.
I was 15 yrs old in Fort Collins, CO back in Feb or March of 1991 and my mom and brother and sister and I went to see it at a theater near the CSU campus. Of course I was young cinephile who took on many emotions while watching movies...and watching Silence of the Lambs on the big screen was one of the most enjoyable, consistently engrossing and horrifying pieces of moving images I had seen at that time in my life! I fell deeply in love with Jodie and wanted to see everything Anthony Hopkins was in. I remember the whole audience gasping and screaming in the theater at certain moments in the film...and on our walk back to the car afterward (at night in the dark), everyone who was also leaving the theater was walking close with their families together, almost paranoid about who was in the darkness. Great times for sure!
Two iconic actors that played such iconic characters throughout their long careers, and none more than Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling. These are the last of cinema’s greats. Felt like I was eavesdropping on a private conversation between them.
After watching Westworld season One, I texted my buddies and declared to them that Anthony Hopkins is the G.O.A.T. of acting.
I’m not gonna lie but Jodie still look gorgeous and beautiful in my eyes. I wish I could look like her when I grow old
Sir Anthony Hopkins has always such a happy energy. This make his job as Lecter even more impressive. He always seems excited about work. His role in westworld on first season as Dr. Ford was amazing too and his twitter account its pure joy.
Besides being a classic horror, and only horror movie to win an Academy Award for Best Picture, this movie to me will always be romantic. Saw this in the movies, 1991, with the love of my life.
that's lovely. a beautiful movie too.
My love asked me in the movie theatre if I wanted to see his butterfly collection......
It's so rare to see these two just being themselves -- how fun to see them in this kind of conversation! I usually hate to see an actor I love getting old, but there's a feeling that the best is yet to come with Anthony Hopkins. He only gets better. I do hate that he's getting to the point where we won't have him any longer, but for now it's pretty fabulous.
You never know. It’s possible he could hang around awhile and be another George Burns! He seems healthy and sharp as a tack.
Silence of the lambs....What a masterpiece.👏👏
They shouldn't have made "Hannibal" without her.
They sadly didn´t have the rights to the character! Still a fantastic show.
I assume you mean the movie Hannibal? She turned down the role. But yes, I agree. Jodie Foster can act with just her face. The proof is the interactions with Hopkins, just her walking down the hallway to Hannibal, the looks on her face conveyed fear and anxiety.
I like Julianne Moore, but she was no Clarice Starling.
What are you talking about? The movie or the series? The series was Impossible, and Mads was enough for me to make Hannibal, what a great show. But the movie...? Idk yeah
@@jessica5497 The movie. Cmon now.
She was right to turn it down originally. The book has a horrendous ending that totally betrays her character. They ultimately ended up rewriting the ending for the movies but Jodie may have just been over the whole situation by then.
I was 16 when Silence of the Lambs originally came out and I remember one day I skipped school just because. I somehow wound up at this mall that still exists because if I went home my family would find out. I figured I’d watch a movie to pass the time. I knew absolutely nothing about the movie but I believe I picked it only because the movie poster was super cool. At the time the age to get into an R rated movie was 16 so when they asked me for my ID - I was by myself - I freaked out until the ticket booth attendant just nonchalantly gave me my ticket and let me in. I thought I was cool because in my mind’s eye, I really must have seemed like an adult. Anyways, I saw it there, absolutely mesmerized and enthralled beyond imagination. I fell in love with that movie and with Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. I would go on to see it at least 7 more times in the theater that junior year in high school. No skipping though, I promise. And then I saw it endlessly on VHS and then DVD, and now I have it downloaded on my iPod. And I never tire of it. This reunion almost 30 years to the date that I first saw it brings back a flood of memories and a nostalgia for a special time in my life when these phenomenal actors and their work made such an impact on me. A trip down memory lane indeed! I know I’m not the only one that’s been waiting three decades to finally see this video. It is a gift greatly appreciated to see this. Thank you!
This was so fantastic! I love Jodie Foster as she is always so intelligent and interesting. Then throw in Anthony Hopkins as the two had worked together in the past and it just gets even better. The conversation just flowed and they were both quite mesmerizing to watch and listen to.
