Linkin Park’s celebrated debut album 2000’s Hybrid Theory would come out during the peak of the nu-metal’s popularity. Linkin Park over the next several years became inescapable if you listened to rock radio or watched MTV. What came next is truly amazing. Linkin Park did something that so few bands could do, their popularity eclipsed trends in music and they soon ventured into uncharted territory, much to the chagrin of some of their fans. But sadly their nearly two decade run came to an abrupt end following the death of frontman Chester Bennington. Today, let’s take a deep dive into the career of Linkin Park.
Linkin Park’s story begins with Rapper/vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist/producer Mike Shinoda. Shinoda would be born to a japanese father and a white mother with the musician telling Howard Stern that being mixed race resulted in him not really knowing where he belonged in school. His mother would encourage him by the age of 6 to take up piano lessons thinking it would look good on his college applications. In addition to music lessons Shinoda would tell the shock jock that he he spent a lot of his time as a young child painting and doing artwork with the idea that perhaps someday he’d become an artist
It was by the time he became a teenager he soon started to get into the blues, jazz and hip hop. Shinoda by the mid 80’s would be hugely influenced by Run-DMC’s second record King of Rock and Beastie Boys' License to Ill as well as LL Cool J's Bad in addition to Public Enemy and NWA. It would be the collaborations and blending of rock and rap that gave Shinoda an idea of what he wanted to pursue musically telling Rolling Stone “The first show I went to was Anthrax and Public Enemy. They did ‘Bring the Noise’ together, and I was like, ‘That’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard.
Wanting to follow in the footsteps of his music idols who sampled popular rock music in their songs he would ask his musical teacher to teach him how to do just that recalling to to Rolling Stone. When I was about thirteen, I told my teacher, Eileen, I wanted to get more into playing jazz and blues and maybe hip-hop. She said she couldn't help me out with that because that wasn't her training. She said, "Maybe you just wanna get a keyboard and start learning those things on your own." I thought that was really big of her to say, and definitely led to an important point in my life where I bought a keyboard. Then I got a sampler, started making beats and playing around with MIDI and digital-based music.”
Shinoda would tell Stern that prior to Chester Bennington fronting Linkin Park the seeds of the band began with him and a childhood friend of his named Mark Wakefield who he first started making music with recalling to the shock jock “the band was just originally me and Mark and i would mostly do all the rap stuff and he would do most of the rock stuff and then we’d teach each other the other side. Mark also happened to be living next door to guitarist Brad Delson with Shinoda adding “Almost like a TV Sitcom they were next door neighbours and there windows were across from each other…We’d be in mark’s room playing sega genesis and you’d hear brad playing metallica on the guitar from the other window.” Delson was also a schoolmate of Shinoda Agoura High School in southern california. The trio soon recruited a bandmate of Delson, drummer Rob Bourdon, who played with him in the band Relative Degree.“ Bourdon, got his start drumming in the third grade after his parents took him to an aerosmith concert. Fun fact . (Bourdon’s mother, Patty, was a high school girlfriend of Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer, who he credits with coming up with the band name.
It was following high school Shinoda attended Pasadena’s California’s Art of College Design where he studied illustration. Shinoda would refer to the school a

In those moments, like I imagine Chester had during his last day, all it takes is a little pull to bring you back but unfortunately he was alone despite all his work and intentions. I was so blessed to have met them in 2010, they are honestly the most down to earth celebrities i have ever met and having them genuinely thank all of us for taking time out of our lives to go and see them was beautiful, especially when so many of us had travelled as far as we did.

They have always been my heroes, not only for the music, their incredible work ethic and live performances, but also for the relation with their fans. No matter how big they got, they did everything to be as accessible as possible. I've had the pleasure of meeting them two times (Mike three times) and they were super sweet, funny and humble - Chester even remembered me the second time and he said "Thank you so much for coming again, oh my God!" while bouncing in his seat, like he couldn't believe I was there to see them again. Then he took my hand between both of his and looked me in the eyes and said again, this time, quietly "Really, thank you". It’s because their last 4 albums were terrible. I’m sorry I love LP and have been listening to them since legit day 1. Most people commenting can’t say that. But with that being said they’re last 2 CDs were absolutely terrible. Not one good song on either album. I get maturing and aging as a band but they took it too far and it’s a damn shame because had they released 2 more albums like hybrid theory they would have been even more liked than they are today.

I was initially pretty lukewarm to the album, but I listened to the album back to back about 3 times and it grew on me quickly as I realized how much effort went into it to give every song a distinct signature that just wasn't present on their earlier albums. It became my favorite album by them and I feel any of the songs could've been singles, which is something most of their songs share.

I’ll admit that after Meteora, with the exception of a few songs, I really didn’t like what they were putting out anymore, and I stopped following them. I’d check back in with them every couple of years when I heard something new was out, but I just wasn’t interested in what they were doing anymore. So I gave up on them. But losing him still hurts. I can remember exactly where I was the first time I heard One Step Closer, and listening to Hybrid Theory every day after school for months after buying it. I got to see them and shake hands with them and get autographs at a local radio festival, which is one of my favorite memories. I remember the various album teasers they released for Meteora and the anticipation of the album, and the IMMEDIATE satisfaction that they had delivered every bit and then some on that anticipation listening to Don’t Stay for the first time. Things were never the same when it came time to release another album, and I understand that they needed to do what they wanted to do and feel creatively fulfilled, but at the time I felt a bit betrayed. They didn’t want to be what I loved them to be anymore. It’s like having a best friend whom you love with all your heart as a kid, but as you both grow you notice they are not the same person anymore (and to be fair, nor probably are you). They don’t hurt you, or at least they don’t try; they just decide they want to be someone else. You let them go, but you still love them, no matter how much time passes. You are happy to watch them succeed from afar, while simultaneously a very small part of you holds on to that feeling of betrayal, insignificant as it should be. You want to join them and celebrate their success, but you just aren’t compatible with that person anymore. And then one day you find out they’re gone forever. You revisit the memories of the good old days and wonder why you didn’t decide to try to work it out, and if they were so special to you, why give up and just let them walk away?
Sorry y’all I just started typing and I ended up on a train of thought that was a longer trip than expected. I’m going to reach out to an old friend before it’s too late.

Minute to midnight had some of my favorite songs. Give it up, bleed it out, leave out all the rest, the little things give you away were all such good songs. It was the last album that felt like a legit LP album.
We all miss Chester. It was too bad what happened to him.

His life and lyrics saved so many lives like mine.
I hope his kids understand how he felt how he just couldn’t take the pain inside anymore and that it had nothing to do with them. 🙏🏽 RIP

I was one of the fans referenced that “was mad they changed their sound.” I stopped listening to them in 2007 or so.
Well, recently, I watched a video about Chester and it broke me. It was too relatable. I felt a calling to dive into their Spotify discography. Turns out I love everything they’ve made for different reason. 16 year old me would have gawked at One More Light but 33 year old me tears up and gets butterfly’s listening to it.
Wish I’d have given them a chance. Maybe I needed this music now more than back then. It’s a bummer that the closet I can get to seeing them live is on CZcams but I’m thankful that I have them to lean on during my hard days.

Solid work Mr. Rock and roll. Your channel has always been around and I'd watch some videos, but I would never relax and enjoy them cause they're so short. Always knew it would be over in a flash. I like the longer format.

Ive really missed these guys. Their music really spoke to me. I want them to continue on, but it may be one of those situations like the death of John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, where it just wouldnt be the same without him.

No other musical act has had more of an impact on my life than linkin park. From 2002 till now they have been regular sounds within my life. It’s to the point I know almost every single one of their songs by heart. As a child having identity issues they were what kept me grounded cause their songs sounded like what I was feeling. They truly are legendary

I'm happy to include Linkin Park (w/ Chester Bennington) among the bands I've seen in concert. They (He) was great.

Great job Chuck! I have been researching this for a few weeks and this video filled in a lot of blanks for me. You saved me a lot of time and I'm anxious to watch Part II. I just want to express how grateful I am for your time and dedication. I know this is one deep rabbit hole and I do hope many more will decide to plunge into it as we have. I hope you feel my gratitude and appreciation.

Great video but hard to watch. When Chester *moved on* I couldn't listen to the music anymore. It took me 4 years almost to the day to be able to listen to them again. And I'm glad I did. Thanks for a respectful telling of a great story. ..it's much appreciated. Thanks mate.
