Kittie's journey is a testament to the resilience and determination of a group of young women who defied stereotypes and shattered barriers in the male-dominated world of metal music. Hailing from London, Ontario, Kittie formed in 1996 when drummer Mercedes Lander and guitarist Fallon Bowman, high school acquaintances bonded by a love for heavy music, joined forces. Alongside Mercedes' sister Morgan on vocals and guitarist Tanya Candler, they embarked on a journey that would test their resolve but ultimately establish them as pioneers of female representation in metal.
Despite facing early setbacks and criticism, Kittie persevered, honing their craft in the basement of the Lander family home and refining their sound influenced by bands like Nirvana, Tool, and Silverchair. Their self-titled EP caught the attention of producer Garth Richardson, leading to their debut album "Spit" and a deal with NG Records. The album's success, buoyed by the single "Brackish," propelled Kittie into the spotlight, challenging stereotypes and garnering attention for their fierce, unapologetic approach to metal.
However, success came with its own set of challenges. Lineup changes, label disputes, and societal pressures tested the band's resolve. Bassist Tanya Candler's departure due to personal struggles marked a tumultuous period, yet Kittie persisted, recruiting new members and releasing albums like "Oracle" and "Until the End." Despite internal conflicts and industry obstacles, Kittie continued to evolve, exploring heavier sounds and confronting themes of personal and societal struggle in their music.
Their refusal to conform to expectations extended beyond their music. Kittie rejected offers from Calvin Klein and pushed back against attempts to pigeonhole them as a novelty act or feminist icons, instead advocating for equality and authenticity in their art. They faced misogyny and harassment from audiences and media alike but remained steadfast in their commitment to their craft.
As the music industry landscape shifted, Kittie found themselves navigating new challenges. Changing economics and a decline in album sales forced them to adapt, leading to lineup changes and periods of hiatus. However, their influence endured, inspiring a new generation of metal fans and artists.
In 2021, Kittie's resurgence began with offers to perform live shows, coinciding with a resurgence of interest in nu-metal. Signed to Sumerian Records, Kittie embarked on a new chapter, culminating in the release of their first album in over a decade, "Fire." With a renewed sense of purpose and a changing cultural landscape more receptive to their message, Kittie's return signifies not just a comeback but a reaffirmation of their legacy as trailblazers in metal music.
Through adversity and triumph, Kittie's story serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the enduring impact of authenticity in art. As they reclaim their place in the metal scene, Kittie's legacy continues to inspire and resonate with fans worldwide, proving that true metal knows no boundaries of gender or expectation. - Hudba

1. The fight between Don Felder & Glenn Frey that led to the breakup of The Eagles in 1980
2. Clem Burke from Blondie doing a short (2 shows) stint as 'Elvis Ramone' in 1987.
Remember when CDs used to have music videos on them. Sometimes it was the only way to view them.
I named one of my Cats "Fallon" after the guitarist when I was a kid.
This band deserved so much better. Thrilled they're making a comeback!
I love Kittie, these ladies rock!
I heard Brackish on MTV for the first time in early 2000s and I was blown away.
🙄🤮
Kittie put out their own full documentary awhile back. It's over an hour long if I remember correctly. Definitely worth watching
The drummer got an artist series on Drumeo, that has to be career highlight,
Cool, will check it out. Thanks
The doc is low budget, but good. My wife isn't a metal head, whatsoever, but even she enjoyed learning more about the band.
What’s it called btw?
It was on Amazon I think. I thought it was good
I always loved Kittie. My band opened for them in Detroit & I became a fan after that.
It’s funny that the resurgence of nu-metal got so many people to first hear Kittie or become a fan again, when Spit was really the only album of theirs that can fit in that category. Their last 2 albums, In the Black & I’ve Failed You, were much more of a melodic thrash metal sound with elements of death, doom/sludge, alternative, and just a darker rock/metal vibe overall. I am super thankful though because these ladies deserve all this recognition and more!
Damn, didn't expect this. I remember seeing them in a small club with Slipknot. God....thats been over 20 years...
The drink??? With the band dope???
@@gasNmudtv Ziggy's in Winston Salem in NC. I'd love to see Dope, never seen to have the chance. I hated I missed them with Static-x in Charlotte back in February.
Saw them at Ozzfest and they endured heavy criticism and sexual harassment. Sad to hear. They did pretty well. They made it, though. Happy they remained determined as ever. They are trailblazers in Nu Metal.
I was stoked to see that their back at it playing again. I saw them when I was in high school, and it was an awesome show.
🙄🤮
So proud of these girls. Mercedes and Morgan are back. I wish them all the luck
🙄🤮 Kittie Was just as cringe if not more so than Brittany KookieMonster Spears. Pure crap. Only girls that ever created a band that wasn’t cringe and overrated was L7 & Poison ivy of the cramps. I never thought it’s because they’re young. Even at the time they hit I was 14. They got criticized because they were arrogant cringe and sucked. Only posers liked these bands that are getting resurrected. Which makes sense because this generation the masses at least love talentless hacks. The more cringe the better. The more obtuse and try hard and fake edgy the better. People can’t digest true music of any genre anymore. It takes brainpower they just don’t have. Limited bandwidth and we all suffer. This is also painfully obvious with mainstream TV & Movies as well. It’s always been that way.
As a local in the Toronto scene during the time that Kittie was starting out, there were several reasons that they never won over or were welcomed in the scene.
When they started to do shows in T.O, they came in with the expectation that they were huge stars already, then they didn't want to put in the work promoting themselves, unlike local bands Neva and Twinfold, for example.
Then when they got treated this way because of their attitude, they trashed the heavy/hard music scene in Toronto in multiple media outlets (can't remember which ones of the top of my head). As a result of this, they got booed off the stage 5 songs into their opening set for Fear Factory in 2001.
They were my first concert! I was about 13 and soo excited to see them. I have such fond memories of that show to this day. ✨🫶🏻✨😹
I saw them open for Slipknot back in 2000. One of the craziest shows I'd ever been to.
Nostalgia is a powerful drug, looks like it brought Kittie back from the dead. I remember them, bands from the 2000s are a hot commodity on the road now.
It's because music right now has become very generic and bland. Most bands I can tell have had their songs half written by the producers.

"I remember them". Yep me too. Lol what?
I haven't watched the video yet, but I just saw Kittie live three days ago at Welcome to Rockville and hooooooooly shit they brought the fucking pain. So amazing. Morgan sounds absolutely incredible. My childhood dream finally came true.
And everyone freaked out during Brackish and Charlotte.
I saw them back in 06. The whole band came out for a meet and greet before the show. They all signed the sleeve of my battle jacket and Trish signed one of my guitar picks that I still have. R.I.P. ❤
“Chicks with Picks” is a brilliant headline 😂
haha yeah, had to include that picture.
all the kittie love i’ve seen lately makes my heart very happy ❤ so glad they are back with new music. been a fan for almost 24 (!) years, i need to see them live soon!! thank you for the awesome video 🔥
I was the only dude in HS that wore a kittie shirt. Fucking badass Grrs🤘🏾
Are you still gay?
I wouldn’t brag about being the only dude that wore a skirt
I resemble this remark…..I was one of like five metal heads in my school, I took shit for it until grade 11-12 when nü metal became popular an suddenly everyone wanted to borrow my cds……it left me very bitter about all the “posers” I was surrounded by 😂
I was an edge lord before hipsters were a thing😅
I don't know how Morgan doesn't blow out her vocal chords with that screaming.
Glad they back
Hell yeah 🤘🏼the new single is awesome, love seeing older bands make proper comebacks
One of the most underrated and evolved bands in the metal industry. Comparing Spit to their newest album Fire is literally like night and day. So glad people are rediscovering them and that they’re getting the attention they deserve!
Saw them in 2000 at Ozzfest in Kansas City. The second stage was in a gravel parking lot.
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
No problem!!
Been a fan since 1999 so glad to see them back
Kittie is great! I've got those first 2 albums and saw them in 2000. Excited to get a copy of the new album! Those new songs are real bangers!
I'm glad to see them back and their new stuff has been really good.
Thank God for muchmusic in that Era. They hadn't gone musicless yet
Uranium ❤️
RIP Call The Office. Such a great venue!
Near the end it was shit tho. Security got stupid and had zero respect unlike b4 in the early days
@@gasNmudtv Such a bummer when that happens at places that were previously awesome.
Just saw them yesterday at Rockville. Better than ever.
So glad they are back! They were everything in high school! And I got my ticket for their NYC show!
Their new album is strong . Will be seeing them when they tour . 🤟🇨🇦🤟
Never will forget first hearing brackish great song. Remember having free tickets to see them at House of blues in South Carolina was on my way to The Show and my car broke down so yeah. Hoping to see them one day great band way way way underrated.😊😊😊😊

\m/ Kittie melts faces!!!! Fuck yeah! Wore out my copy of Spit back in the day.
I had their Spit In Your Eye home VHS back in 2000/2001. Great home video.
I first read about them in Rolling Stone and was intrigued and looking for something different. I picked up Spit and fell in love with the group. I've listened to their albums all these years and am so excited about the new material. Thank you for this history of the band.
Thank you for doing this! Andspeaking of Silverchair, you should do a vide on Silverchair!
I saw them in 99 with a then upcoming band known as Slipknot…600 hundred person club packed in 1100 was insane
This is one band I never got into, but glad they found their audience!
Love the channel, man!
Thanks
I have been a big fan of Kittie since first hearing them on the radio back in '99. The new album is well named as the first singles have indeed been Straight Fire 🔥 🤘🔥🤘🔥🤘🔥
The first time I heard Kittie was on a show that aired on YTV back in 2000/2001 called Chart Attack, and saw the video for Charlotte. I also have to shout out the excellent documentary on Kittie, called Origins and Evolutions.
Charlotte slaps. Credit where credit is due Kittie kicks some 🍑
I love Kittie...they were one of my favorites...I still listen to them
I remember hearing Kittie for the first time on late night MTV, back in highschool. I'm fairly certain it was for the song Brackish, but to be honest, the specifics have been lost to memory. I DO remember enjoying the track, and thinking that these girls were pretty damn good. If I'd had any sense in my head, i would've jumped on right then and there, but, in an age before we had as easy access to music as we do now, i decided to wait until i heard more of their stuff, before plunking down my saved up lunch money for a CD. Whatever the next video i saw for them was, i wasn't nearly as impressed, and I kinda wrote them off. After that, they became the band that all the goth girls in my school would wear the shirts of. That was pretty much it at the time. It wouldn't be until over a decade later, that i started digging into their discography, and realized how much of a bonehead I'd been. Thankfully i remedied said boneheadedness, and now I'm set to see them perform in August.
Thanks for doing a video about my favorite band it's about time they get some recognition 🤘❤
That's awesome glad they're making a comeback remember seeing them on ozzfest when they were like 14 and def not a gimmick KITTIE has been dope since their first album and they should be way bigger than they are but atleast their true to their craft!🤘🏼
Thank you for the post! 👍🏻✌🏼😊
Another rad video RNRTS thank you for the blast from the past memory bro Saw Kittie at Ozzfest 00 here in Phoenix, AZ.🤘
I'm glad they are back making music!!
I've loved Kittie since I was 15! They are still amazing!
I always liked this band! They kicked ass at Ozzfest and they were only like 16-18 years old at the time. I was surprised to be older than them and they were Real heavy. 🤘🏼
Ozzfest 99
@@StandWatie1862 2000. And Mercedes came out for Disturbs set to background vocal on stupify I believe. Or at least they did that at the Pittsburgh show.
@@bls13thmember meant to spell out ozzfest 99 was lit. Slipknot was on the side stage
You're from E-town?! Nice! So happy to see an Edmonton channel succeed. My first home was there. Big love for this prairie city.
Loved them from the beginning. 💜
Still play the Spit album to this day! Soooooo good!
I saw taproot a disturbed open for kitty at the warehouse in Toronto….it was one of my legendary teenage adventures.
Just saw them at Rockville. They were great even though whoever was in the sound booth kept having the volume fade in and out but Kittie was awesome. Glad to hear they have a new album coming out too.
Met the original lineup back in the day at King's Island up in Ohio. Pretty cool. And they rocked hardcore back then. And even more so now!
I've Failed you is such a criminally underrated album
I loved this band, they were great.
LOVE them. Thank you
I love you videos I feel like I always learn a little bit. Every time I watch one about a favor band but you asked for a suggestion,, and I thought this would be a good one. Ace, Fraley.
Finally kittie! I loved them!
Kittie never fell! Kittie will Always been in my top 5! 🤘😎🤘
I love this band. I would love to see them on this tour.
Would love to watch a video from you about the band Remy Zero 🙂 thanks for such great work
Thank you!
I was waiting for this video! excellent content as always, i just watched Euro Trip after watching the "Scotty doesn´t know" video
thanks! Ah Scotty Doesn't Know is one of my favourite topics I've done this year.
They used to play in my town quite a bit and I never got the chance to see them live. Hopefully now I will finally get the opportunity!
Morgan,Take Care of Your Voice,So That You Can Allways Rock It Out!Take care,on Tour, and Life Ladies!
Kittie rocked 🔥💜🔥
Kittie kicks fxcking @ss. Saw them at Ozzfest. They’re a tight live band 👌🏻
Woohoo! I have been a huge fan of them since the first album and acrtually saw them live for it. I am so looking forward to the new one next month and I'm really hoping they do more than just the six shows.
Kittie walked so other bands like IWABO, BabyMetal and Spiritbomb could run.
I saw Kittie last weekend at Welcome to Rockville. They.were.SICK!!! Great show and they def held it down. Never heard them before but I’m glad I saw them.
I was a Freshman in highschool when they hit the airwaves. They were such a breath of fresh air.
Kittie is/was badass I've always loved their sound & Morgan Lander is beautiful
I'm glad they have been able to stay going for a long time. They always have a great line up besides the sisters and they are still putting out great music.
I saw them in 2000 opening for Slipknot ...I fell in love with Fallon that night❤❤❤
the OG Kittie lineup needs to get back together. Kittie at the Electric Factory in Philly was one of their best shows Ive been to.
Kittie held it down for sure I'd put them high on the list in that era.
I’m so glad I caught this. It’s such a pity that women in rock and metal continued to struggle because of their gender even up to the 2000s. Kittie’s story has a lot in common with The Runaways.
I know that Morgan joined Karkaos for a while but last I heard she was not the vocalist anymore. Well, she belongs in Kittie.
I’m impressed at how hardworking these ladies were doing homework while recording and later holding various jobs.
Now I want to hear what the new album will sound like!
I loved Kittie in 2001. It got me through high school. I was like yeahhhh girl power!!!!!
Congrats on the CZcams plaque, my man!
Thanks!
I go way back with Kittie! Seen them live in 2002. Been a fan for over 2 decades. Glad they are getting back together!
I absolutely love Kittie one of two bands I listen to from that era I have failed you is probably my favorite album from them
They made a good impression on me when Brackish first dropped back in the day. Sucks that people couldn't see past their age and sex. I'm happy to see that they've kept the band alive all these years, albeit in different iterations, while also pursuing other things. And I must say, they all look so good, healthy, and happy! They've aged quite well.
This was good. I've also watched their documentary. This was a good update, since the doc ends somewhere in the late 2010s.
Imagine living your dream and performing your art, and all the media can say about you is, "OMG GIRLLLLZZZ?!?!?!"
Kitty is in my all time favorite female fronted bands!!!
This was a good one!
i was there at sommerset when they played. they were epic
I love Kittie! they were my first introduction to female metal!
If you haven't covered any of these bands, it may make good content. Fly Leaf, The Donnas, and you may have a video on Veruca Salt ns? Also and the late great Wendy O williams!
I had no idea Jason Wyner signed them! I used to do a lot of work for his Nutrabolics brand. Small world!
Also met Mercedes and Morgan, and they are great!
Remember them at Ozzfest 2000
I found their first album on the floor in the band room in high school back in 2000. Super scratched up CD but it worked. Loved their sound and loved their style.
They did get so much flak, but many ppl once they listened a bit thought they were solid.
Everyone had a.crish on Talena.
It's funny how many famous people from Canada came from London Ontario, where I was born. These girls were great for their 99 debut. Still very heavy and aggressive while still being feminine
They put out a pretty good documentary before Trish died. I think it's on CZcams.
I stumbled across my brackish CD a few months ago when I was cleaning my garage
Good times. Seen them twice ! One of the better bands down the bill.
Just saw them at Sick New World. Great set.
