The band Type O Negative would mix themes of romance, drugs, depression, and death and would be credited as bringing goth rock to the masses Their third record Bloddy kisses would be their commercial break through and the biggest album of their career. It also made them the biggest band on the then fledging label roadrunner records In today’s video let’s take a look at the history of bloody kisses.
Type O Negative frontman and bassist Peter Steele would be the youngest of six children, raised in a strick catholic household in brookly new york. He would consider himself a burden to his parents He would remark to the dayton daily news that he was taught that everything normal was evil. As he grew up, he distanced himself from religion calling himself a born again pagan. As for his musical influences, he would grow up idolizing the beatles and black sabbath remarking to the associated press “i’ve always loved the beatles. I’ve always loved b lack sabbath. I like the heaviness mixed with a good strong melody.”
As Steele got older he would branch out to like a wider range of bands telling the LA Times he was a fan of droning and, dreamy sounds citing bands like the Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine and Dead Can Dance. . ..
A lot of Type O Negative’s music was written from Steele’s point of view growing up as he didn’t have a lot of luck with woman, was emotionally fragile and vulnerable to demons with the imposing frontman telling the LA Times in 1997
“I have gotten my heart broken so many times that I’ve lost count,” “Any time I’ve been involved with someone I’ve cared about, I’ve suffocated them by caring too much. That’s probably why I lost them.”
The imposing Steele would stand 6foot 8 inches tall and weighed t250 pounds with his deep baritone voice, He would refer to himself as the ideal frankenstein but interviewers would describe him as soft spoken, guarded and polite. However, his opinion of himself was pretty low with him referring to himself in interviews as a monster, a psychopath and social expletive.
Steele would tell tbe associated press Some people mistake kindness for stupidity and so now that I’m a scumbag to people I get automatic respect. It’s a very sad place that we live in that the only way to get what you want is by instilling fear into people.” He would remark to howard stern that at one point he was a flower delivery guy and he kept delivering flowers to one women who refused to tip him, so he urinated in the flowers.
It was during the late 70’s Steele played in band’s like Hot Ice and Northern Lights. By 1979 he would play in the band Fallout with future Type O Negative keyboardist Josh Silver. But the heavier sounds of punk which were popular for a few years was being replaced with disco and new wave and Fallout would split. Silver and Steele would part musically with Silver founding the new wave group original sin while Steele would start up the metal group Carnivore. Carnivore would sign to a small label named Roadrunner records who put out a handful of albums before they fell apart. .
Following Carnivore, Steele was initially focused on working for the municipal government, trying to become a cop but life had other things in mind. Future type o negative drummer Sal Abruscato who had worked with Steele at a blacksmith shop heard about Carnivore’s breakup and went over to talk to his friend about working on some new music telling loudersound His father answered the door and let me down, and there’s Peter sitting in bed watching TV, having just cut all his hair off! He had just took the New York Police Department test; he didn’t want to play music anymore. I asked if he wanted to hang out and jam, have some fun. He nods, saying he’s always wanted to have a band with electronica - keyboards, samples and things like that. I’m like, ‘Yeah, cool man!’ just saying anything so I could play with the guy!”
Steele would reconnect with longtime friend Josh Silver and add guitarist Kenny Hickey. Their new outfit would go through several monickers for their new o

I met Peter in 1991 in Cincinnati. They were the opening act for The Exploited and Biohazard and sadly they were booed off stage after only two songs. Some people thought they were racist because of some symbols they had on their gear. Anyway, Peter was soft spoken and humble and a real sweetheart and I felt awful about how the crowd treated them.

I was far less aware of the music than the image, because that's where most of the focus seemed to be, but hearing them play made me a fan. The songs were heavy, and powerful, but had great melodies mixed in. The punk influences showing up in the drum lines, and the absolutely crushing guitar tone, were especially appealing. Genuinely one of my favorite albums.
I met thr band on their last 2010 Halloween tour by forgetting my ID. So I had to go into the under 21 door and get the Xs. This was directly next to the nerch booth and rather than going to the other entrance and waiting on my friends I bought a shirt.
I'm not sure if they did this for every show or just the one I was at but there were no VIP tickets I was aware of. What they did was give the first 50 people to buy merch a note card 1-50 which got you backstage to meet the band at the venue.
Type O has meant so much to me throughout my life amd I told Peter as much and said "Thank you for keeping it up all these years". To which one of the greatest moments of my life, genuinely, happened. Peter Steele made a dick joke to my sincere bumbling story about what the band meant to me by saying "I am having trouble keeping it up these days but that's a story for later".
Not in a mean or shitty dismissive way, but in a way to acknowledge what I said and to make a joke/moment for me in a very warm and genuine way.
I will never forget it and it genuinely makes my eyes misty.
Such a good human being and a good dude. Man I will forever be bummed I won't get to see them again.
That was my first Type O show and I'm so glad I braved a snowstorm with Mt friend to see them.
This was the 2010 PA Allentown show fyi.
Thanks for putting out so much Type O Negative stories, I've noticed you've shown then a lot of love over the Yeats and I will always watch any video in its entirety about my boys Type O!

I saw them open for Pantera on the Far Beyond Driven tour, Queensrÿche on the Promised Land tour, and one time with just them. They were supposed to open for Mötley Crüe with John Corabi, but they left the tour for some reason, and Gilby Clark from GnR opened instead.

I recall going to a show in '95 or '96 (can't recall... stay away from drugs kids) with Pantera opening for Type O, and everyone thinks I'm remember that backwards.
I still have the ticket and occasionally have to SMS a photo of said ticket to prove it. I wish I remember the show, but if not for the ticket and the deviated septum from colliding with a bouncer, there isn't enough in my head to prove I was ever there.
When I say "stay away from drugs kids," I mean that, sincerely.

They toured together in 1994-1995 and Pantera definitely opened for Type-O Neg when they played together in Tampa, Florida in January of 1995.
      Pantera opened with this set:
      Paranoid
      Strength Beyond Strength
      5 Minutes Alone
      A New Level
      Walk
      Use My Third Arm
      Domination
      Primal Concrete Sledge
      Mouth for War
      Fucking Hostile
      This Love
      I'm Broken
      Planet Caravan
      Cowboys From Hell
And Type O Negative closed it out with this:
      Kill All the White People
      Christian Woman
      Are You Afraid
      Gravitational Constant: G = 6.67 × 10⁻⁸ cm⁻³ gm⁻¹ sec⁻²
      Prelude to Agony
      Summer Breeze
      Too Late: Frozen
Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)
      Good stuff!

I could see Pantera opening for Type O, but in 96? They were pretty much on top of world then, this would genuinely surprise me.

    • @vanhattfield8292

@@TheTennesseeFistMachine They didn't tour together in '96, they toured in 94-95. In 1996 Pantera toured with White Zombie and did some shows without a big name opener. Type-O Negative toured with Ozzy and Sepultura the first half of the year and did a lot of multi band festivals over the summer and closed out the year playing mostly with Manhole and Life of Agony.
They reconnected in June of 1997 in Ozzfest up until July.
I seen Pantera at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, KS on 1996 and I don't remember them having someone open for them. GREAT show...

The story I remember as a kid is that they had all the merch made for Sub-Zero, and then found out they couldn't use the name, so they had to find a name that could use a circle with a negative symbol as a logo. No clue if it was true, but that's what I heard about their name.

I remember when I would go to their early shows that many times there was people outside protesting the shows. When people would give me flyers about why Type O/Carnivore was so wrong would question the person if they ever heard S.O.D. and other east coast bands that had not so much politicly incorrect humor to their lyrics. Here on the west coast people seemed to take such things so seriously I guess because of the hippy movement.
