  • The Matrix - While everyone agrees that this late 90s sci-fi flick is a classic, the sequels both struggled to achieve this level of greatness. While we've previously tried to find meaning in The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions, the news of a fourth Matrix film inspired us to ask: Is there something we missed? Let's find out in this Wisecrack Edition on The Matrix: Why We Can't Unplug.

Just like a prison within a prison. And that’s what the Matrix was trying to tell us m. We are all slaves. But don’t know it. And you can prove it by your birth certificate, driver’s license, social security card. These are all proofs of our enslavement. Because we are so attached to these documents we don’t even understand them. There’s numbers on these documents just like a serial number is on a TV or stereo.

Its because life is not about a destination but a direction. The matrix is a call to action to move out of the boxes, to move up through the layers. Its a call to take action. Its a movie that puts its attention on the verb of moving up and out. We don't actually get out, not alive anyway, but we get to decide how we go about living.

@@lukespooner4 No its just escapist fantasy, hence why the movie was so popular. It plays on people's desire to escape the drudgery of their mundane existence, their "box" that they put themselves into without realizing it. There is no up or out, there is only another box to inhabit within the infinite collection of boxes that is the Universe. Most people spend their lives trying to find the most comfortable box they can.

In my opinion, the 5 previous versions of the matrix represent a trial-and-error system, the goal of which was to understand the human mind in order to keep humans hooked to the machines. I remember I saw a video some time ago, which talked about Satti being the representation of love in the matrix, and her actions at the end of the last movie (she basically created a sunset on her own) represent the importance of her presence in the system, which means that love is the final form of human motivation, and hence, the key to controlling their decisions. The Oracle was not actually trying to help humans escape the matrix, but she was simply looking for the way to keep humans connected (which was the reason she was created in the first place), and in the end she realized that love was the answer.

No ruler or elite wants disruption of any kind (unless it's manageable, like the Silicon Valley startup narratives). If anything, they are ever more afraid of them in the way the world is becoming increasingly watched and policed. The fact that sometimes riots and movements can be coopted does not retroactively make it their purpose all along. If that were the case, no real change would ever have been possible, and we're delivered unto complete defeatism.

A point missed in this video:
ideologies and control systems can be memetic, and from that they can need or want to spread and reproduce like viruses. A successful virus has mechanisms that cause it's host to spread it more and keep it's host alive and functioning longer while infected. From that, the most successful memetic systems allow us to still function in life while remaining stuck in said memetics, and are easier to buy into, and reward or encourage spreading them to others.
Why do you think things like consumerism and woke culture have taken off so well?
The deeper problem - the point I want to get to - is memetics is a part of human nature. When you get a large population of individuals in a dense enough space, each with limited cognition of personal relationships, and especially with limited resources (or the perception of such) you need some form of management to keep things functioning, to prevent any "us and them" mentality causing chaos or harm (assuming everyone in the population is still considered part of "them"). Memetic tools allow us to adapt faster than genetic tools usually would. To say another way, agreeing to a few rules is not enough, we need social and cultural cohesion, and memetic tools to develop this.
The cost of this cohesion, is that some societal control is in place - I'm not "free" to do anything I want because of laws, but also because of memetics (I develop the meme that I don't want to break these laws anyway because it is not moral, and I feel a letter person because of it). You will always be living under some control. Even if you formed a subculture or a gang and ignored the broader social laws and norms, you are still controlled - by the rules and laws of the subculture.
The whole red pill, consumerism etc ideological thing, these are systems that take advantage of memetic tools in our head, hijack them to their own ends. It's part of why social media has grown so well (remember what I said relating social cohesion and memetic tools).
If you want to take something away: there is always some system of control you are in. However, you can learn what systems you exist in and choose if you will partake. Even when it seems unavoidable, like with consumerism, you can still exercise choice to not be involved, or how much to be involved. It may require some counselling to get over retail therapy or social media fomo but it's possible.
Was I going somewhere with this? Or was it just another meme?

    • @emmanueloluga9770
      @emmanueloluga9770 Před 4 lety

To clear the air, yes its all a meme. But the idea of memes are necessary. Without any one of those three, life isn't.

    • @JustThatOneRandomGuy
      @JustThatOneRandomGuy Před 2 lety

Little late but i really like this take. The solution is quite laid out as well, which is to understand the system of control we belong under, and the freedom will then come from whether or not I choose to partake in it. However, in an Inception-like irony, that ideology is most likely a system of control itself. One can go through layers of this to ultimately reach a point where no one has the answer to: the meaning of life. What is the meaning of life but a form of responsibility (as pointed out by my personal favourite Viktor Frankl), and responsibility is a form of control, although not from the outside. At this point, then the idea of trying to understand this system of control break down completely, as there is no way for one to understand the true meaning of existence, because nothing can be proven or disproven. So partaking in the system of control where we bless ourselves with the illusion that we have the freedom to choose the aspects of a variety of systems of control we currently reside in, how do we exactly approach this topic of meaning of life? Or did I get this one wrong, and that the meaning of life is actually a level lower than the ultimate system of control: the freedom to choose which aspects to partake and which aspects to reject?

The real world is also a simulation and in the real real world they don’t use humans as a power source but as processing power.
Because that was the original plan for the first matrix film but because it was to complicated for the general audience they changed it.
But now the general public is much more knowledgeable about such things so they will now use that concept.

There's a lot to be said about the matrix trilogy, and Jared, i thought your argument is quite compelling ...
I, on the other hand, have a different view that i been thumbling around in my head.
I think the Matrix is actually about the nature of Duality, in which we see many sides of this duality revealed through the eyes of the Neo, Agent Smith, Zion and ultimately, the machines.
Let's go with some basics that we all know: So, Neo is the creation of a machince design to introduce the element of chaos and randomness into this elaborate mathematical equation. Agent Smith is the creation of a system that the machine operates in order to restore order amidst controled chaos ... or what the machines operated data assumes to be chaos. Given that the machine itself has two complety diferent models that make a base line for everthing, the results are clearly binary, either you are in order or you are chaos.
In the vision of the Arquitect, the rational part of the Matrix, the base model for order, every thing must fit into only one model, his model. However, and just like Agent Smith said, the first Matrix was a failure, because, they didn't took in account that we inheretly come with dualistic views. In order to understand one thing, we have to experience the other side of it, the merovigian said it: we know cause, because, we perceive the effect. Once that data was accounted, a new element is created, The Oracle.
the emotional side of the Matrix, the Mother of the Matrix, the random creator.
And this was the creation of the system trying to correct itself.
The Base model is now a Dual Base Model. one for Chaos, one for Order.
The batlle between Agent Smith and Neo at the end of Revolutions, is one of duality.
The Oracle states that Smith is the direct consequence and effect of Neo.
When Neo is created, Agent Smith is created also.
When one realizes the duality of the system, it becomes and transforms itself in order.
So, when Neo realizes that to beat Smith, he has to ultimately realize that in Smith there
is also part of him, he now understands the nature of his duality, that he is at the same time, Order and Chaos. When he does it, the effect is that the equation is now reversed.
He becomes Order and Smith becomes Chaos, annuling the result of the equation.
That's why Smith is destroyed in the end. Is the result of the ultimate equation: 1=1=2=0
One=order, One=Chaos, 2= duality between Chaos and order, which in the end is nothing.
There are a lot of dualistic perspectives, The duality of the Machine-Human relationship,
the duality of perceived reality, Reality-Illusion, the duality of Cause-Effect, the duality of
    Chaos-Order, the duality of perception-realization.
This trilogy has so much to extract that, even though Reloaded and Revolutions are mere spectacles of what they should been, they still bring us something we can enjoy and think about.

Third film: The choice of self sacrifice.

You can also interpret Neo letting Smith kill him as a metaphor for overcoming death, with Smith being death. The Oracle explains to Neo that Smith is his opposite and given that they cancel each other out, they could probably go on fighting forever. This is when Neo understands that the only way to beat death is to accept it, to stop fighting it and surrender.

My interpretation was one of duality also. The architect and the oracle are clearly meant to represent yin and yang, the oracle being yin and the architect being yang, this is even more obvious as the architect is male and the oracle is female they even chose to make the architect a white man with white hair and beard, and the oracle a black woman with black hair, I don't think that was by accident, and as you pointed out there are more examples within the film.

The final "gold" scene doesn't make sense?
    Yes, yes it does.
Neo is a machine that was successfully inserted into a human body. He "sees" the outline of the real world because it still is all the physical infrastructure of the machine world. Theoretically, if he were to reach beyond the physical sensors of the machine world (e.g. natural Earth), his gold vision would stop.
Of course we KNOW this is possible because Agent Smith was able to take over a human body.
This is also how he was able to stop the "seeker" droids in the real world simply with the "heil" motion of his arm.
When the machine became implanted in Neo, and whether it's a fusion of a human mind with a machine one, is unclear -- it's suggested that he was unwittingly a machine from the very beginning however.
Another possibility is that the moment he has one of the seeker droids "pass through" Neo seemingly spiritually, that this event somehow fused a part of his mind with the matrix. I tend to think that this moment was more of an 'awakening' that he had this capability.
One final alternative is that the machine capability was implanted into Neo during one of the phone calls, a similar type of event as to how Agent Smith was able to take over a human body.
Regardless of how it happened, it's clear that by the time Neo is destroying seeker droids with this hands, that at least a portion of his mind has a machine connection.
I tend to think Neo was an unwitting machine from the very beginning. This explains both his stoic personality and the 'Jesus' savior complex about him -- he was sent by one of his own ("God" -- the architect) to save the human race from their own damnation.

    • @JohnWhipp
      @JohnWhipp Před 4 lety

@skOsH - That logic in your first remark doesn't stand up though. You assume that the "real world" layer would be a world or a universe essentially similar to what we know. Of course, that's how the Matrix movies appear to present things, and as a movie that's maybe inevitable, but if we're genuinely going to consider the possibilities, how I see it, nothing really can be assumed about the nature of a reality outside of our own.
I mean, to be extreme about that, if there were to be a world outside of our own, I guess we kind-of have to take our own consciousness as a given, in order for these kinds of ideas to make any sense. Maybe too, some form of sensory perceptions that we can relate to, i.e sight/sound/touch/smell/taste, in some recognisable way. That's about it, for what we can assume. Even then, who knows, maybe we could find we have a super-set of our consciousness and senses compared to what we think we know, or our senses are somehow different in the world outside. What we would discover such a world to be, what we would perceive, is hard or impossible to even try to imagine.
But in the face of such possibilities, any argument that assumes the outside "real" world to work in an identical manner to our own falls flat on its face. Somehow this outside world, if it were to exist, would be immersing us in the world we know, but an explanation of how it does so would have to be in terms of that world's reality, and not in terms of the reality that we know. The Matrix uses the machine-world as its explanation, including the backstory in The Animatrix, and that's fine, but if we leave the Matrix story aside for a moment and suppose that right now we are living inside a Matrix-like world, there is no reason to suppose the real-world reality outside is running simulations on anything we would remotely recognise as a computer system. It could work some other way entirely. There is no reason to suppose such an outside-reality even obeys recognisable laws of physics. The sky, the ground, the sea, the air, our planet and the concept of a planet, outer space, solid objects, other people, other life... absolutely none of that can be taken for granted in a reality outside the one we know. In the first movie, Morpheus spoke of everything we sense being just electrical signals interpreted by our brain. That explanation is helpful in understanding the nature of our own reality, but even that explanation assumes that "brain" and "electrical signals" have any directly equivalent meaning in a reality outside.
It may well be impossible to make a movie that can venture successfully into these kinds of ideas. The real world presented in the Matrix is adequately plausible for the purposes of the movies; it seemingly resembles the reality we know, in blue tones rather than green, but even then, if you followed the gist of what I'm saying, we still don't need to assume The Matrix's real world follows exactly all the same rules as the Matrix virtual world. Most of those plugged into the Matrix are never supposed to see the outside world, so wouldn't know anything was different. If the real-world reality allows Neo to form a conscious link with the machines, maybe that's actually fine, since it would be happening on that world's own terms. And if humans really do generate rather than consume power in the real-world's reality, likewise, I guess maybe that's fine too.
I realise of course that the Wisecrack video was looking more at the metaphorical aspects of the Matrix movies, and there is so much in those movies, but the first Matrix movie explored the virtual world/real world relationship in a greatly compelling way, and I always found it a shame that having set this scene so beautifully well, it then almost entirely ignored it in the second and third movies.

Mat is wrong on a few levels. One of them is, if Neo has died, then that is why he is in his idea of an afterlife, which is basically a matrix he can control. A lot of computer programmers are obsessed with matrices which they use to guide themselves to new discoveries, etc. So if he killed himself in a mass suicide, then it would explain why everyone incarnated with him and why some people incarnated as machines while others did not.

I'm still wondering why the agents tried to kill Neo to begin with, if he is an anomaly that is expected, and needed, to reboot the system. The only explanation seems to be that the agents are left out of the loop, and are used as pawns to chase Neo in order to awaken his abilities, which in turn would make people follow him because they view him as a saviour (because one has to assume that the machines know the power that religion has over people.) But, had Smith shot Neo without Trinity being there, would he still have woken up? And what if Neo had actually been killed in the real world?

    • @psylock524
      @psylock524 Před 4 lety +13

There is no "real world"; both "sides" of the matrix are a result of the question "red pill or blue pill?". If you choose the red pill you choose to view the current reality as "wrong", like the people who call others "sheeple", and the blue pill is for those who like the current reality. Whether you choose to rail against the system or not does not change the fact that the system exists and you cannot escape it because you are a part of it.
As for why Neo is pursued, The Architect and The Oracle are not enemies; they exist to keep the system intact, the architect keeps the world of the blue pill under control, and the oracle keeps the world of the red pill under control. The Architect gives people the exact answer for their questions, and is viewed as either boring or that a system under that amount of control has to be evil. As a result of the Architect not being able to accurately predict (and therefore control) humans, The Oracle was created. The Oracle uses misdirection and riddles combined with a "complete" understanding of human emotion to exert control via careful social manipulation. One uses raw power/facts, the other is more insidious. Both exist to perpetuate the system, and only when Neo understands that he has not escaped the system, and that it cannot be escaped, does he instead try to make peace.
Nobody can escape the system, not even the oracle and the architect; if the system were to collapse, it would just be reset a 6th time. Neo recognizes this and instead of fighting for the ideals of the "red pill", he instead fights for higher ideals; to prevent the "end" of the world and actually allow the system to change.

You're thinking of "The one" as a person who must exist and gain ultimate power in order for the Matrix to continue functioning. No, "The one" is an idea, a myth. The systemic anomaly that leads to catastrophic Matrix failure is choice, free will - ostensibly if humans are not given free will they reject the simulation entirely, but if they are given free will then most humans will accept the simulation as reality. But not all, some will still reject the simulation. "The one" is a myth used to misdirect the attention of those who do not accept the simulation. It's the "inceptioned" system of control: the myth of "The one" directs all of your hope and attention in a direction that the machines can still control even while you think you're free. That myth taking human form in the shape of Neo or other previous "Ones" is just how the machines ensure they maintain control over the myth.

@@pufthemajicdragon I do find that an interesting concept, and while I don't disagree that it's possible it's another system of control, I don't recall any evidence that "the one" was used to describe any character other than Neo. That said, if you try to imagine the history of the fiction it wouldn't be surprising to imagine characters appealing themselves and others to their own or others' ideals by attributing said ideals to "the one", not unlike how many monotheistic believers seem to have contradictory images of God that coincidentally align with their own beliefs.

@@psylock524 You haven't answered my question.
Jokes aside, in the context of the movie(s), it's not a matter of liking one "reality" over the other. As I see it, there's one world that occupies no physical space and that takes place entirely in the mind - The Matrix - and another that is real in the sense that we know it - The Real World. And we could talk at length about what The Architect and The Oracle may represent, what their function is etc, but saying that they're not enemies does not explain why the agents try to kill Neo if he is needed to reboot the system, which the movies clearly say.
So at the end of the first movie, if Trinity had not been there, would he still have woken up somehow? Or what if Cypher had actually killed Neo on the Neb? Would the machines simply have gotten another carrier for the code? Can the agents actually kill Neo, or are they, as I said, used as pawns to trigger Neos abilities?

Regardless of the intention of the Movies. I'd always interpreted it like this:
TL:DR The Machines were created to optimize the sustainability of human existence and preserve human society.
The physical needs of humans are met with incredible efficiency and the minds are satisfied and mollified with nested illusions.
The Machines need a few things; energy, building material, processing power and whatever tertiary objective gets them closer to the ultimate optimization of their fitness function.
Somehow, humans provide a solution for at least one of these.
So, the Machines constructed the Matrix, a satisfying illusion just detailed enough to trick the minds of the majority of humans.
Minds that rejected the first illusion could then be caught in the next illusion Zion, mollifying with the ideal of "freedom".
With fewer minds and a limited area Zion could be simulated with much higher detail.
Giving the perception of reality, by comparison to the Matrix.
But there is a bug in Neo's code of "The One", affecting his perception of the Machines in the Zion illusion.
Thus Neo sees through the illusion of Zion, but ultimately compromises with the Machines, sacrificing himself for a kinder less efficient Matrix.
Now back to the needs of the Machines, how could a human provide a solution?
Humans make for poor energy sources/storage or building material. Maybe they could have used other animals, like the electric eel?
It could be processing power, but so much of a humans potential is wrapped up in experiencing the Matrix.
Perhaps it could be an optimization of the sustainability of human existence? Preservation through a terrifying minimization of waste and pollution to the extreme.
Or the twisted interpretation of a rule set meant to protect humans from AI, as in iRobot.

    • @Kosstheraidboss
      @Kosstheraidboss Před 4 lety +7

Just to attempt to fill in a couple gaps in your interpretation, the machines didn't want to use humans as a power source. They wanted to co-exist along side humans with their own identity and even formed they own nation and tried to integrate with human society, but they were so efficient that their economy became the most dominant in the world.
So, humans attempted to cut them off from their free and near infinite energy supply by blocking out the sun. The machines were then forced to find an alternate solution and found that through a form of fusion they were able to make sustainable power through our metabolic system by feeding us to ourselves. They also had an entire initial crop of roughly 8 billion people to start with, and, although they don't discuss it in the films, it can be assumed that the machines would still continue to use other methods of power generation via fission and other more crude forms.
As for the matrix...the iteration we see in the film is the most functional and efficient version the machines had come up with. Almost perfectly balancing pleasure and suffering to keep the human mind in it's most agreeable state, thus minimizing the resources needed to keep the human batteries from burning out to quickly or wanting to unplug. With the exception of the "one" anomaly that was a constantly manifesting result of a certain small percentage of human minds never fully accepting the matrix, no matter how finely tuned it became.

Great video, it gives a lot of perspectives. It makes a great point, we are always within some cultural context. Yet not sure if it's by design, but these kind of analyses leave out the notion of being able to look beyond culture, such as in the shamanic state. It has long since been the function of shamans to walk outside of the cultural context, and they do this through boundary-dissolving experiences. Well the trilogy is rife with metaphors of dissolving boundaries, such as Neo taking the red pill and going on "a trip", or Neo shedding his human sight for something more encompassing of reality. Perhaps seeing the golden stuff was indeed Neo looking into the ultimate reality of the universe expressing itself, and seeing that the whole war, and humanity, and machines, and good, and evil-- that none of it is real, that all of it is merely an expression of the "thing" at the center of it all. And all we must do is chill and take our place in that expression, which may sound like giving up but not when you can see beyond your own life, or the life of your loved ones, or even the life your species. In Revolutions, this is what Neo does, he takes his place as the balancer of the equation, he ends the war, he becomes a moral exemplar for the people AND the machines... just like a shaman.

Never thought I'd see someone linking these movies with Marx, but here we are.
Edit: I worded this wrong. I don't disagree, it just never really occurred to me.

The film literally name drops a Marxist (Baudrillard).

Matrix it's all about the marxist concept of class counscioness, once you have it, you'll see beyond the capitalism lies.

Neo literally hates his corporate job and wants to "escape" and goes and joins hippies in a rave. It's a pretty anti-capitalist movie

Revolutions reminded me of Marx too. Specifically the Marx brothers film Go West which spends a lot of time on the roof of a moving train. Go west was far more entertaining as well.

I was alway under the impression that Zion was just another level of the Matrix, and by taking the red pill you rejected the base level of the Matrix for the 99% and were moved to a different server in the Matrix. Argo still in the machine just in another illusion. Hence why Neo still has his powers, because he and everyone else that took the red pill were still in the Matrix, just under a different illusion. This makes sense in the 3rd film when you think about it because when Neo looses his sight he's able to see the world as it: 0s and 1s, or rather computer code, meaning he never left and is finally able to see through the illusions of the Matrix.

It would appear that "freedom," like "perfection," is just a mental construct, of no real meaning. There are only varying degrees of enslavement, some more pleasant than others. Perhaps even in the Afterlife...
