  • We're building a HUGE loft with custom laminated posts and headers. In this video we laminate the posts and headers, anchor them to the floor, mount the header boards, and secure everything together.

    First of all…you pole building is never big enough😂but very true. I know people that had some moisture issues when they went next to the metal roof with insulation…check that out👍. Metal racking is a nice alternative. I like the video’s.

      @TrentR42 Před 5 měsíci

      Rollers wont help with Snipe. As a matter of fact, since they're not being fed into the planer one after another, these posts will all have a bit on both ends (which doesn't really mattter once in the brackets)

    I built my workbench frame over the long weekend out of scrap pallet wood. I found some long 2x4x10s that had been nailed and screwed together, but i was able to take them apart and use them to build the frame. i did what you suggested to make a lap joint out of them and i'm shocked my measurements were good enough to be not only square but level! sorry I am new to woodworking so I got a question, are you able to square up wood with a planar? I thought you couldn't do that but your wood came out so good!

    • @BearMountainBuilds
      @BearMountainBuilds  Před 6 měsíci +2

      You can't perfectly square up lumber with a planer unless you're using a jig. The best way to ensure square is using a jointer(which I someday hope to own). Just using a planer gets it close enough to square for my purposes. If I was building cabinetry I would make sure it's perfect, but my posts won't be touching anything on the sides so any slight out of square won't be noticed

  • @Cvoge1972
    @Cvoge1972 Před 6 měsíci

    Question - When you were measuring how tall the ledger braces were you added the length of the post with the mount and ledger, then subtracted the ledger. Couldn't you have just measured the post with the mount?

    • @BearMountainBuilds
      @BearMountainBuilds  Před 6 měsíci

      Good question, the header is made out of a planed 2x10 while the ledger board is a 2x8 which means the supports under the ledger board are longer than the posts with the mount. That's why I had to measure the total height of the loft first then subtract the 2x8 height

    What is the difference between laminating to create posts vs just picking up posts?

    • @BearMountainBuilds
      @BearMountainBuilds  Před 6 měsíci +1

      The main difference is you can make your beam/post as large as you want when you laminate which also increases strength. Laminated posts won't twist because each individual board resists the twisting of the other boards. The only downside to laminating is it can be time consuming compared to just going to the store and buying a 4x4 post.

    • @NavyCopMA1
      @NavyCopMA1 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@BearMountainBuilds Didn't even think about that. Did a little armchair quarterbacking and looked up the price as well and I can see that, minus the time to construct them, it is cheaper to build out 6x6 posts using 2x6's as well so... learned something! Appreciate the build outs. Always gives me something to start with when planning my projects.

  • @jasonaileo1605
    @jasonaileo1605 Před 6 měsíci

    be careful using screws in place of nails in your joist hangers (near the end of the video). as a general rule screws don't have anywhere near the shear strength that nails do and are usually not approved for applications like joist hangers where the fasteners are carrying the load. recommend you check the shear rating on those #10 structural screws you used. otherwise, looks great.

    • @BearMountainBuilds
      @BearMountainBuilds  Před 6 měsíci

      I did a lot of research on structural screws and these will be able to take the shear stress especially since I won’t be loading this loft to make capacity. Could use nails too but I don’t really like nails

  • @oli3x9
    @oli3x9 Před 6 měsíci

    French people there - not sure about the exact translation of wood tech words -
    @ czcams.com/video/7BYb7Z4VGss/video.html take care , you should glue your wood in opposite direction. eg. this pattern )( not this one () "coeur contre coeur" in french. over time, wood will expand around its core and this will create split. if u oppose them , they tend to compensate, otherwise they add up and may cause flaw on the edge, at the core too. it can slide along nails
    Interesting work !
