A company responding to product criticism in a positive manner is an honorable company. Due to LPL's video and their response, I purchased two of their Lifepod products and love them. Win-win overall. The company receives more sales, LPL shows he's not out to get companies but just trying to improve the industry, and I have a safe vetted by the master himself. I spent a long while before buying gun safe because I was skeptical of many brand's security based on LPL's and other's videos, all showing how easy it is to get into them. With ensuring safety against adolescents being my #1 concern, a video like this is really reassuring to me.
Stopping some adolescents is harder than stopping any normal intruder. When I was 14 I got access to my father's keys for 30 minutes and had a hand filed copy ready to go (already had a blank I bought). It was for porn (early 80s), our guns weren't locked- how could we go shoot when he wasn't home if they were locked up? The only way he could have stopped me is if he never took the keys out of his pocket, and wore them to bed. Pants on the floor and I would have had my copy.
@sewagii You clearly must have not watched the video, the company made a new safe, the problem was not present. Just because someone engineering it can have a minor oversight, doesn't mean they are a bad company. I mean they literally sent out kits and made their customers aware of the flaw, didn't just sweep it under the proverbial rug. Yes this comment does make sense, it is about the video, the company in the video, and that company's products. If a company is willing to acknowledge and fix their short comings within a matter of days, that's a good company, doesn't matter if they made a mistake, as long as it is not made again and they learn from it enforcing new policies due to it.
I think it's only PacLock, Sterling, and Vaultek have looked at LPL's videos and gone "Okay, we made this mistake here, let's fix it to prevent it being as problematic as before." Masterlock are content to just make the same flaws over and over and over, and the cheap locks that don't have any security are just embarrassments.
Huge applause for this! If someone gets a defeat and then does their best to fix that defeat, then they are paying attention. Unlike MasterLock who appear not really to give a damn as long as you keep buying their crappy locks.. Just my own opinions, of course, so don't sue me.
Of course Vaultek products offer a reasonable level of safety. In the Wasteland, they’re used to secure Plasma and Laser pistols after all. Will you cover the model that can be unlocked by inputting the code into your Pip-Boy? 🤓
And in Fallout 1 and 2, you could blow it open if your explosives skill was high enough. That's why you should put points into explosives, instead of lockpick.
"the pick that Bosnian Bill and I made.." YES, I love that line and I really love that tool. Engineering and proper execution all in one well thought out instrument. How can one NOT like this channel!?!
How is the tool compatible with his idea of a curious teenager? They won’t have the tool even if they have pick knowledge from internet. He should do these tests with more available tools
I can respect a company that made a patch on their design flaw, then sent it out to the owners of the product. It actually seems like a fairly good product, being backed by a great company.
For those who say "LPL is just helping thieves" this is the counter example. Vaultek made their product better and hopefully people who buy this product are safer, as are their families.
If anything lol informs consumers on what kinds of garbage products to avoid. Like all of masterlock. While periodically some companies take notice of such easily exploitable vulnerabilities and fix them. @@ruffrider2626 It's a surprisingly common mindset amongst general people that if you study/teach lockpicking for anything other than locksmithing reasons, you must do it for nefarious reasons. I used to work with a guy who, in my eyes, was about as skilled as LPL. He didn't do it for a career, he just liked having it as a useful skill and a way to be more informed about security, but because of that he would frequently get flak from friends and family about it. @@Rhoasckm Interesting. I never thought the solution to faulty security was to stick ones head in the sand and hope everyone else did too. I doubt I would ever need one of their products, but if ever, they will be top of my mind :D
I think he said disc detainer lockpick while filming but noticed it while editing and changed it to the pick bosnian bill and I made because he knows everyone loves when he says that :D
A rare error that proves he is not as mechanical as the locks he picks ... though we have vastly more evidence to suggest he was in fact manufactured for perfection.
You may never own a handgun, but I could easily see putting a cheap handgun safe next to my bed as a honeypot for burglars- that is, put an alarm switch in it so if it opens with the alarm armed it trips a panic alarm immediately.

@@FatherManus Well, duh - the only reason that locks don't open when he enters the room is that the locks know he doesn't like a free lunch. Masterlock doesn't always get that memo though.

I can't help but imagine a Vaulttek executive member getting a call from PR and an enthusiastic conversation involving "LPL" and "with a fork!" on that day.
*And* they retroactively went back and fixed all the older safes they already sold, which is automotive-recall levels of care. (Probably made easier by it being a software update, but still...)
I like how he points out that no handgun safe is going to resist much of any destructive attacks. That's just unreasonable to expect a portable handgun box to resist, say, an angle grinder. But yet a lot of people go "pfft I could just cut it open". That's _missing the point entirely_ to be honest. Here we have a product that is reasonably difficult to pick open, as LPL correctly states, requires specialized tools and the knowledge of what you need to pick it open as well as the skills to actually do so, and there's no cheap and easy ways to stuff a bit of thin metal in-between the seam to pop something inside of it, nor can you just simply use a magnet to engage some mechanism inside of the box. A competent product, a little pricey, but is $230 worth more than someone's life? Absolutely not.
Depends who the someone is. Personally I think I'm worth about $1.75 and a handful of sunflower seeds, so $230 would be a princely sum to invest in my longevity 🤠
@@its_clean it's not about your value, it's about how you value friends and family finding this product. There's many ways to hide/secure a gun, this seems like a good option.
You also have to look at the opportunistic scenario when locking up a gun. If this lock safe prevents a child from picking up a non secured handgun potentially causing an injury then in that respect it will suffice..
Guns are not safe, even in a vault. (And I think if a magnet would do it, LPL would have shown the flaw. Im curious about the battery resetting the code though, and 5 digits is just 5! so 120 tries to brute force, three minutes at most)
@@Pandemonis It's 5*4*3*2*1 which is 120 if you can only use each digit once but it's 5*5*5*5*5 which is 3125 combinations if you can use the same digit more than once.
I think curious child is exactly the right threat model. The tamper alarm is nice feature. No exploits. My only issue is the low number of combinations. You could try them all in under an hour. If the safe has 30 to 90 sec cool down after 3 failed attempts, that will make guessing impossible. Better yet, have the tamper alarm go off after 3 fails. Those might be included.
Seems like a good lock to me. Though my main concern for locks or codes I dont want my family or people I know to get into is them learning the code or swiping the key. As a cheeky little youth I recall breaking into these numpads all the time simply be either guessing the code (most people use the same codes so if you learn one you learn em all), watching for when the code gets punched in and then using it later, or even looking at marks on the numbers to see which are pressed and narrow it down from there through deduction. I did all 3 of these under the age of 10 (though not to a gun safe) so its something to keep in mind.
‘The Curious Adolescent’... ...non destructive but persistent 🤣 I was one of those once (some 40 years ago). I found a combination bike lock lying in the street. Knowing nothing about locks I just worked through every combination, took me about a week.
Yeah, I think the next thing Vaultek needs to do is implement a # of password fails feature if it does not already have one. Like, if you fail the code 5 times in a row, it sets off the beeping until the real code is entered. That way, if Jimmy tries to open it by brute forcing the code, his parents will know about it unless he gets insanely lucky and guesses it within 5 tries.
@@Dhalin He could try one or two codes each day that the parent takes the gun to the range because a successful opening will clear the counter. But yeah, that will take some time. And if the parents guess, and reset the code, it could take even longer.
Have to hand it to LPL, when a company does the right thing he does the same and gives them praise when it's due. At least this company addressed it's flaws, and improved it's product, well done!

Good to know, I definitely think it's important to remember that if someone is willing and prepared to destroy a locking container that they can get into even those huge "safe" type comtainers which people store their guns in. Ideally I would want to figure put a place to put this that would make it difficult to find or destroy if it's in a vehicle and as for home this is a nice way of making sure there's an extra barrier between a gun and a child.
And that's why I love LPL - absolute honesty and transparency. He is not trying to kick anyone, just deliver a brutally honest review of a product, giving credit where credit's due.
Appreciate this video. I've been on the lookout for a night stand gun safe because I have an almost 2 year old. I will be getting this one now, I know if you say it's worthy, then it must be good.
LPL, my mother came from a travel, and she lost of of her baggage's key. It was a small lock and we were a little worried that we would need to break it. I asked for a Paperclip and a clamp, since i don't have picking tools. Used the paperclip as a pick and the clam as a tension wrench, took me around 10~11min, but i got my first pick and opened the lock ❤️ Thanks for the videos, i feel like it helped me a lot with the pins and all. My father said it was useless knowledge a while ago, but i kept watching, and it helped me!
"Better than most" is the same in the LPL channel as to being "average" in the special forces. If you made it that far you're already the cream of the cream.
And they treated it like an emergency, considering they must have sat down with the engineers and figured out how to fix it in that same length of time.
"Customer service" like the service this company displayed when they weren't even contacted is why I'm willing to pay more for a product even if it's exactly the same as sold by someone else at a reduced price. Walmart of all places went above and beyond within a minute of me hitting "send message" yesterday for some deliveries with both missing and damaged parts I had ordered online. No, I'm not paid and wouldn't write this if it was just a one time thing or "fluke" if you will as this is the third time in three months they have surprised me with excellent customer service with a quick solution. It's a shame more companies based on security don't reach out to the LPL so it's definitely worth remembering the ones that do.
We can expect around 500.000 views in short term, with people coming back because of comments, it can be around 300k to 400k people reached. 150k to 200k from lands where gun safes are common, around 75k to 100k from households with guns maybe... around 25k to maybe 40k makes decisions about purchasing safes (others are either teens, kids or their partners buy these things, etc), most of them already have gun safes or better storage for their handguns, so around maybe less than 5k plan viewers plan to buy a gun safe in next 12 months... So that massive run is unlikely. But people who search for videos and reviews about their products might encounter this video later, they will create a bit more views, but while those views are maybe tens of thousands people in the long run, they actually represent people who check various options and will buy gun safes. Some of the videos might get linked from store pages, etc... and these reviews will translate to sales at that time.
A serious kudos for the manufacturer. I'll bet the champagne party is going to last for days. With this level of defense, I'll be giving this product some deep consideration, far more than the other gun safes I've seen LPL test. Good job, Vaultek.
Vaultek passes the Lawyer's test with flying colors! It feels so good when companies fix their mistakes and change their designs for better protection from curious adolescents or actual thieves.
Kudos to Vaultek. They saw the problem, called LPL to let him know they saw, fixed said issue on future models, and even sent patch kits to existing owners. Quality company.
It's always good to see a product that isn't laughably bad. Honestly after watching this channel for a while, I've become entirely disillusioned by the entire lock industry.
Per the channel description : "Please note that I do not recommend locks, nor do I provide assistance in opening them." That's why it didn't happen for other types of lock-based products either.
Remember, he is a lawyer. A recommendation has legal ramifications that he is avoiding. That said, once you watch a few of his videos (and read the comments), you'll be able to determine if it's worth using or not. The closest thing to a recommendation I've heard him say is "This is a lock that I would use".
A gun safe that LPL considers better than hiding the gun under your carpet is literally a museum-worthy device of legend.

Props to Vaultek for responding correctly, rare these days. Thanks LPL for highlighting when a company takes the right steps.
Well said.
Yeah, instead of playing deaf or offended, they should be grateful that he's doing research for them for free.

He further shows high quality products that can resist most picking attempts and/or have good defenses against destructive attacks for the price point.
Who says that?
@@ruffrider2626 It's a surprisingly common mindset amongst general people that if you study/teach lockpicking for anything other than locksmithing reasons, you must do it for nefarious reasons. I used to work with a guy who, in my eyes, was about as skilled as LPL. He didn't do it for a career, he just liked having it as a useful skill and a way to be more informed about security, but because of that he would frequently get flak from friends and family about it. Sometimes jokingly, but far too many times they were genuinely concerned.

It doesn't mean a lot when the competition can be opened by toddlers. The bar is reeeeealy low for gun safes.
They should make a firearm lockbox that sends a message to a designated phone if it's interacted with in any way. That way the owner could be notified even if they aren't at home.
They have one. If someone tries to use the fingerprint reader, enters a wrong code, or bumps it too hard, it sends an alert to the app on the owner's phone. It works very well.

I really love when companies actually heard to those who deeply know what they say. The reaction and response to the flaw detected by LPL was, IMO, the perfect one: contact LPL, fix the flaw in next version, release a fixing kit for those clients who already own one. Just the way that things should be fixed when someone screws it up. I hope every company would react this admirable (and also the smartest) way.
"Could be a reasonable choice". That's basically an A+ seal of approval in this environment. Good job!

Such praise deserves recognition. I bookmarked their page if I ever need a handgun safe.
"Better than most" from LPL is a real big compliment for any lock maker.
‘The Curious Adolescent’...
...non destructive but persistent 🤣
I was one of those once (some 40 years ago).

That response to your video is astonishing
Jesus, there's a massive run on these going on I'd imagine. That's some high praise from LPL! Way to go Vaultec!
The pick that Bosnian bill and I made finally makes its return 😄🙌
That's a massive compliment coming from this guy, they should use it in their ads 😂
